DEAR PARISHIONERS...
Merry Christmas to all!!! The Solemnity of Christmas is an Octave (eight days) of celebration. In an Octave each day should be celebrated as if it were Christmas Day itself. Christmas ends with the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin under the title, The Mother of God. This is Mary’s “Mother’s Day.” It is a Holy Day of Obligation.
Remember that the word “obligation” from Latin has two roots; “ob” which means “on account of” or “for the sake of,” and “ligatio” which means “to bind, fasten, or unite.” It is where we get our word “ligament” from, as in the material that keeps our muscles and bones connected. In this case, “obligation” is used to show how we should connect ourselves to Mary in a special way on this special day, because it was through her connection that Jesus was conceived and born into our world. That is why it is so important to attend Mass this day unless we can’t because of the necessary demands of life. But who would not want to go to celebrate and honor our dear Mother in Heaven!
Also, remember to keep your Christmas tree up at least until the end of the season of Christmas which is celebrated on January 11, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Some may even wait until the Presentation of the Lord which happens on February 2.
Our first Holy Hour to kick off the first phase of Bishop Ricken’s six-year pastoral plan (the first two years being prayer) gathered about 30 people on December 7 for some prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Those gathered also took the time to chant Evening Prayer which was very beautiful. Our next Holy Hour for the month of January will again feature readings from scripture and the popes. This hour will take place on January 11 at 6 pm or immediately following the 5 pm Mass. Please note that this is the second Sunday of the month. The Holy Hours from now on will all take place on the second Sunday of the month rather than the first Sunday of the month due to multiple scheduling conflicts. Everyone is invited to come to all or part of the Holy Hour. It always goes fast.
Thank you parishioners of St. Raphael once again for your prayers, patience and support despite the continued delay in completing the church renovation. We’re getting there.
Continue to have a joyful Christmas Season and a Happy New Year.
Fr. Michael

Day by Day Warming Shelter
As we approach year’s end, the Day by Day Warming Shelter wants to thank every individual, business and organization that has helped us during 2014. There is always more work to do, and additional funds to be raised, but through your thoughtfulness and generosity, you all have helped us accomplish much during the past year, and for that we are eternally grateful.
We thank everyone who organized or helped set up these events, sponsored them or played some other role, or attended these events to help us continue to do the work we do for those in our community most in need. We are, indeed, most grateful to live in a community whose citizens never hesitate to extend a hand and give to those in need. Thank you again, God bless each and every one of you, and may you all have the happiest of holiday seasons.

DECEMBER 28, 2014 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH| 5
Reflecting on the Scriptures Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one
another and forgiving one another, And over all these put on love, and let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into
which you were also called in one body. --- Col. 3
Today we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. God blessed them as a result of their willingness to do
God’s will. Yet, that blessing did not mean a carefree life. They had to deal with the issue of Mary’s pregnancy other than
from Joseph, traveling a great distance close to Mary’s due date, and the necessity of leaving their homeland to journey to
Egypt to avoid Herod’s murderous actions.
Family life is a struggle, each person with his own needs, own weaknesses, dysfunction, conflicts, lack of communication,
anger, and pride. Other family dysfunction can include addiction or one member is a “Power Over” person who dominates
via demeaning, controlling, diminishing, and trivializing others. To move toward greater holiness, families must function
with mutuality in respect, love, forgiveness, humility, patience, compassion, and kindness. Graced moments are when
family members are living the virtues that St. Paul speaks of in Colossians. And this is a movement from the messiness of
family life toward holiness and healthiness. How do we live a holy and healthy family life?
Family prayer. The family that prays together, stays together! This is not just a cliche’, but a truth that has been
manifested over and over. Families who place God at the center, mealtime, bedtime, making God a priority on the
weekend by worshiping at Mass, are not corroded by the many faces of selfishness. Couples who pray together have a
strong base in their marriage because of the level of intimacy of prayer, placing God as the cornerstone of their marriage.
Prayer is the glue that holds the entire family together; therefore, they do not crumble under the stress of the many
pressures of our culture.
Humility is the second underpinning of family life. I am humble when I live acknowledging that I am both dependent on
God and interdependent on others. Humility has a true face and a false one. My “playing” the facade of smallness doesn’t
serve myself or others. There’s nothing positive about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around me. I am a
child of God. I am born to manifest the glory of God within me. It’s not just in some of us. It’s in everyone, and, as I let
my light shine, I consciously give other people permission to do the same. As I am liberated from my own fear, my
presence automatically liberates others. Each of us is a child of God, unique, talented, fabulous, bringing forth our gifts to
be lifegiving to self and others.
Forgiveness is an absolute necessity of family life because I can’t live so close with another without seriously hurting
him/her and without that person seriously hurting me. We cannot not hurt each other. There is no healthy alternative
except forgiveness. No doubt I and others will disappoint, situations will not be fair, feelings will be hurt, needs will be
neglected. When I forgive, when I live beyond my hurts and sensitivity, God can enter my life in a way that resembles the
forgiveness of Jesus on the cross, “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do”.
Quietly reflect on each of the virtues St. Paul names in the reading today: heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness, patience, bearing with one another, and over all of these is Love. Pray for these virtues in yourself and share
them with your family. No family, however good, is able to sustain itself by its own efforts. God sustains families.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES –
Each year I write a poem to be enclosed with
our family Christmas card and often
parishes ask if they might publish it in their
Bulletins. It is in that spirit, then, that I
share this Christmas message.
Merry Christmas!
A New Star
All through the long day,
and far into the night, a thick fog blanketed the land.
And then, as night crawled slowly toward the dawn,
a soft wind stirred the sky and swept the fog away.
“Look up”, it seemed to say, “into the sky.
A new star is climbing to the top of nature’s tent,
its light now joined to wondrous star of Magi fame”.
“I’m with you still,” it whispers in the night, “but now my light shines out
for all to see and follow
to the place where perfect Light is born
and nurses at His mother’s breast”.
Vinal Van Benthem – Christmas, 2014
How Do You Pass on the Faith to the Next Generation?
Do your grown children still
attend Church?
How can I share my faith with
my kids? Grandkids?
How do you keep your children
practicing the faith?
Are you concerned that your grandchildren will
not be baptized?
A panel of 3 speakers--- Maria DeMeuse, Phil Lawson
and Joe Tremblay---will be presenting, On the Same
Page, discussing what practices have been known to
work with young people in receiving the faith and
how we, as adults, might apply these same practices.
There is hope for practicing the faith in post-high
school years. The three speakers will be presenting
On the Same Page on Tuesday, January 27, at
6:30 pm at St. Raphael Parish, Oshkosh. No fee.
Pre-registration recommended.
