System Leaders 2017—2018
WELCOME
An Introduction from Blue Sky, Castle Phoenix, Inclusive, RSA Academies’, The Swan and President Kennedy Teaching School Alliances. This is the first System Leaders brochure that has been produced collaboratively between all of the Teaching Schools in Coventry. This year, we welcome Sherbourne Fields and Castlewood School who are a newly formed joint Teaching School – Inclusive Alliance, as well as President Kennedy Teaching Alliance. Together we see this joint approach with all of our strategic and associate partners, as a crucial contribution to the provision of school to school support for all Coventry schools. The Teaching Schools in Coventry are dedicated to ensuring that the School to School Support provides schools with a significant and extensive level of expertise. Our teaching schools have experience of supporting over 60 schools in the past few years. We strongly believe that the best way of school improvement is through school to school support. Our track record demonstrates that the support we can offer can turn a school around from an ‘Ofsted category’ to Outstanding. We have expertise at all levels of teachers, middle leaders and support staff and at National Leaders of Education (NLE) and Local Leaders of Education (LLEs) level. We can offer a variety of support and relationships that can be built on a formal and sometimes informal level through coaching, mentoring and one to one support. Please note SLEs, LLEs and NLEs are able to offer a flexible/ bespoke approach to school or networks for training provision. We believe that our partnership approach is part of Coventry’s strategy, along with the school improvement networks, to develop a self-sustaining, school-led, school to school improvement system to raise standards and ensure all Coventry children and young people receive the best education possible. This brochure provides a summary of the system leaders that are in place within Coventry and
support/development packages available to all schools and academies for 2017/2018, along with costings for the differing types of support. Our commitment is to:
Strengthen system leadership in the city to complement established networks
Provide a cost effective way of sharing and developing best practice to support school improvement across the city;
Support all schools in the continued drive to improve student outcomes;
Support Coventry’s priority to narrow the gap with particular focus on effective strategies to improve achievement of underperforming groups in the city;
Support all schools with their own personal and professional development priorities;
Promote outstanding practice through schools sharing their strengths and through benefiting from best practice regionally and nationally;
Focus on high quality teaching and learning and approaches for continued and sustained improvement of teaching, learning and student achievement;
Support schools’ self-evaluation processes and the application of the Ofsted framework
We look forward to working with you and your staff over the coming year.

General Principles: The table below outlines the proposed Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire agreed daily consultancy rates for all schools; charges are based on a full day rate. For twilights/half days please pro-rata the charges. The daily consul-tancy rates are based on the complexity of the work, rather than the role or designation of the person carrying it out. Some examples of the nature of the work are given for each charging band – this list is by no means exhaustive and is for illustration purposes only; colleagues recognise the wide range of support requests and the need for flexi-bility as school-to-school support partnerships develop.

The School to School Support Commissioning Process is outlined below. If you would like to know more about the process or School to School Support please contact the appropriate Teaching School Alliance (TSA) for the required system leader.
Request Made
Request for School to School (S2S) Support is made to the appropriate TSA. This could come for example from a Local Authority/Diocese/School/National College/Department of Education/another Teaching School.
Request is received
Request goes to each individual appropriate TSA leader, for example the project manager who leads on School to School Support.
Work is Brokered
TSA lead contacts school and brokers work. Needs are confirmed and costs presented. System leaders and/or other members of the TSA team are identified. First meeting arranged and TSA lead is named. This process takes account of: school phase/school context/location and geography / specific experience / working style and approach.
Initial Meeting
TSA Senior Lead and/or TSA System Leader to meet Head or nominated lead from the school requesting support, for initial discussion with appropriate senior staff. The meeting will cover: focus of work, expectations for outcomes, funding, length of deployment, frequency.
Agreement Signed
All parties sign up to a contracting agreement (including action plan), reflecting the agreed terms for the deployment.
Deployment Begins
System Leader completes short summary of action each visit. Time sheets submitted to System Leader’s school, and that school sends monthly invoice to supported school.
Mid Term Review
Is the support working? Is it appropriate? Any changes? Next steps. Consider if support should continue? If not, a final timescale and exit strategy agreed.
Final Written Review
Final written review and impact evaluation written by Head of client school. Sent to the TSA's project manager in change of School to School Support Strategy and disseminated to the System Leaders and TSA schools involved.

SPECIALIST LEADERS OF EDUCATION
Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) are outstanding middle leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. They understand what outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context.
The SLE role was created to help raise standards and improve the quality of school leadership through school-to-school support and peer-to-peer learning. This designation recognises the important role that senior and middle leaders play in improving schools and outcomes for children.

President Kennedy Teaching School Alliance
INTRODUCTION
I am the Head of Literacy and Numeracy in Year 7 (“The Bridge”) at President Kennedy School and this is my third year in the post. My background is in primary education, and my experience in Year 6 has been invaluable in working to improve the quality of transition and build very strong relationships with our feeder primaries. I have established a phonics-based intervention programme and a guided reading initiative, to improve the progress of students who join us with low levels of literacy, and for the past two years I have also been developing a maths intervention programme for our underachieving Year 7s.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
We were judged outstanding in all areas by OFSTED in July 2013, and the quality of the literacy provision was specifically mentioned. Another important aspect of my role is promoting the understanding of literacy across the curriculum via whole staff training and small group or individual support. Although my role is predominantly in Year 7, the impact of the training and increased confidence in using literacy across the curriculum has been felt across the school.
I worked at Moseley Primary School for five years where I was Literacy Co-ordinator and taught across KS2, with most of my experience being in Year 6. I was then seconded to St Osburg’s Primary School for a year as Literacy Co-ordinator.
SPECIALISM
I have also had considerable experience working with small groups of high achievers in both literacy and numeracy in our primary feeders.

Castle Phoenix Teaching School Alliance
INTRODUCTION
I am currently Maths Leader at Courthouse Green Primary School, where we aim to provide exciting and challenging maths opportunities for the children in our school. Along with other leaders, I have developed a maths curriculum, which is in line with the new national curriculum, while still remaining personalised for the needs of our school. I strongly believe that maths is a subject which all children can enjoy and succeed in. Because of this, I have enhanced the teaching and learning of maths across the school with the use of practical resources to support children’s understanding. Having successfully completed the London based training, a particular interest of mine is the use of the Numicon approach and how it can be used across KS1 and 2 to aid children’s understanding of number and abstract concepts within maths.
Previously, I have been a leading teacher for maths and enjoyed working with other practitioners from my own and other schools to improve maths provision. I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues from other settings to develop the teaching and learning of maths and provide better outcomes for all children.

She has a particular interest in strategies to stretch and challenge High Ability pupils, especially in terms of developing learning behaviours to prepare them for the demands of Higher Education. She is also interested in how Oracy within the classroom can be used to enhance the quality of writing.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
Throughout her 8 years at President Kennedy
School, she has worked in a variety of roles within
the English department. Her initial role as KS3
Co-ordinator helped to develop and foster an
in-depth knowledge of curriculum and assessment.
Her role has now widened to include Teaching and
Learning across the department as a whole. As a
Lead Practitioner, she is now able to use coaching
as a tool to develop the confidence of staff and to
empower them as leaders in their own classrooms.

INTRODUCTION
I am a Maths SLE and Leader of Learning at Caludon Castle School and make up part of one of the most successful Maths teams in Coventry I am also a member of the Learning and Teaching team, delivering and supporting all staff in their development.
Through my role as an SLE I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with colleagues on a 1-to-1 basis to discuss development and, particularly, to encourage a greater level of risk-taking in the classroom.
I am passionate about the Learning process in enabling students to learn with minimal teacher-input and it is my belief and teaching philosophy that the more collaboration I can encourage within my classroom, the greater the level of overall learning.
Collaboration is a key part of my education beliefs; it is with enormous enthusiasm that I sought to be an SLE and therefore look forward to collaborating with a great number of colleagues in other schools as and when your need/opportunity arises.
Since becoming an SLE I have also become a credible specialist for Edexcel for their new-spec 2017 A-level Maths qualification and am therefore trained (on their behalf) to assist schools who might be implementing their specification.
