From the Desk of Tim Colburn: A Cultural Survey UpdateHighest participation rate of all-time and improved core scores highlight 2012 survey One of the ways we measure how the organization is doing is through the annual Cultural Survey. Our Cultural Survey was conducted this past December and was completed by 335 staff members, a return rate of 66.9%, which is our highest participation rate to date. Last year we did something a little bit differently, instead of having every department work on separate goals based on their results; the System Strategy Group (SSG – senior executives) took the lead on projects that effected the organization as a whole. For example, one of those areas you had told us we needed to enhance was the availability of leadership – we listened and made some changes in structure to create a more flexible and visible leadership model. This year’s survey validated those changes through improved ratings and very comple-mentary comments in the related areas. As with previous years, the organi-zational results from the survey’s scoring questions have been shared with the Berger Health System Board of Governors, SSG, and the Leadership Team. At the center of the survey are the following 7 core questions that we have utilized from the beginning: As you can see from the numbers, our scores were higher on each of the core

questions this year. We are making great strides across the organization. From the survey’s four open-ended questions, we received a great response and a lot of information; positive comments, suggestions, and personal thoughts on your department or the System. Since the survey is anonymous, only SSG receive their respective departments’ comments as a whole and work with their leadership reports to share and address only themes and/or trends from the comments, individual comments are not divulged. We are listening. The survey also reinforced that we have a lot of things to be proud of in the organiza-tion. The following questions are just a few of the areas that we collectively excelled in:

- ‘I am fully engaged in doing my best and support the Mission, Vision, and Berger Way culture.’ - ‘When there is something that needs to be accomplished quickly, we work together as a team to get it done.’ - ‘We strive to deliver services of superior quality.’ - ‘I would feel safe being treated here as a patient.’ - ‘I am proud to say I work at Berger Health System.’ This list has continually increased from 6 questions in 2009 to 14 in 2011. Thank you for completing the survey and for sharing your honest and constructive comments with us.

Digital Mammography services featured on NBC’s Daytime Columbus with Gail HoganBerger Medical Center’s facilities and excellent staff highlighted on NBC4i

On Friday, February 3rd, Susan Strawser, Tiffany Bauman and Stephanie Nichols were interviewed on NBC4i’s talk show Daytime Columbus. Stephanie is a registered mammographer, who has been with Berger Medical Center since its opening in October 2007. She brings 30+ years of breast imaging experience to our facility. Nichols, Strawser and Bauman had the unique opportunity in the interview process to discuss BMC’s digital mammography services. They was able to reach out to viewers in the Columbus NBC4i area and provide life-saving information regarding early detection which includes breast self-exam, mammography, and an annual breast exam by medical provider. Additionally, Stephanie educated the public about the advantages of digital mammography including faster exam with less discomfort through shorter compression time, clearer accuracy and early detection diagnosis is the ultimate goal. Berger Medical Center’s Imaging Department services include mammography, MRI, CT, X-ray, EKG, ultrasound, and laboratory testing. Keep the facility in mind for your Northern Pickaway County and Columbus patients as a scheduling option.

Dr. McMahon’s practice earns Level ThreeMedical Home CertificationThe award honors the continuous, comprehensive care model of McMahon’s BMC practice

The practice of Berger Health System’s David McMahon, M.D., was recently recognized by the National Commit-tee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)

as a Level Three Patient-Centered Medical Home, the highest such distinction available. The certification recognizes Dr. McMahon’s continuous, comprehensive and integrated care model that allows patients to streamline their care through a single provider. In adopting this model, Dr. McMahon’s practice is one of the select few in the area on the cutting edge of transformative health care. “The term medical home doesn’t refer to a house or a hospital or a building, but rather a model of care that turns the focus

of a physician’s care to the overall health plan of the patient,” said Tim Colburn, President and CEO of Berger Health System. “To the patient, this means one easily accessible physician that coordinates their care across a wide spectrum of care and also provides support and assistance throughout everything they need.” Within the Patient-Centered Medical Home model, each patient has an ongoing relationship with a personal physician who provides first contact and leads a team of individuals who collec-tively take responsibility for that patient. That personal physician is responsible for either providing their care needs or for arranging care with other qualified physicians for that patient.

The process also enhances access and creates new channels for communication between the patient and their physician. This includes expanded hours, open scheduling and new innovations that allow direct contact between the provider and the

patient. The PCMH model coordinates and integrates care across all elements of the complex healthcare system. In short, the patient has a “home” physician

through which their care is fully understood and coordinated. By providing this more easily navigated healthcare path, patients see a high standard of care and attention, in addition to added value for their healthcare decisions.

“To the patient, this means one easily accessible physician that coordinates their care across a wide spectrum of care.”

Counts, Fraley and Baker named Berger Employees of the Year for 2011Three honored during President’s Reception at Grove City’s Pinnacle Country Club

Greg Counts, Ben Fraley, and Jamie Baker were named Berger Health System’s Employees of the Year during the President’s Reception on January 27, 2012. Greg Counts, non-clinical employee of the year, started with the system in 2010 and is currently responsible for maintenance, operations, and interfacing of all current and future information network infrastructures. According to Greg’s cowork-er, Tina Septer, “Since I have been em-ployed in the MIS department, I have been consistently impressed with the profes-sionalism, skill set, and work ethic that Greg Counts has exhibited. Greg shows teamwork, excellent customer service and willingness to support BHS staff and our department in his capacity. Greg’s values and work habits display his Berger Way values and his relationship with the end-users and coworkers demonstrate it well. Greg was a natural choice for Employee of the Quarter. If there are questions or issues, Greg will help and also teach you how to fix or address those items yourself so you are enabled to better serve your department and end users. I’ve worked in multiple IT departments and wish I could have had a mentor of his caliber to help grow my skills.” Ben Fraley, non-clinical employee of the year, started with the system in 1989 and is currently responsible for maintaining proper functioning and repair of all health system equipment and machinery. According to Ben’s coworker, Rob Carroll, “Ben truly brings to life the idea of “behind the scenes.” So much of what each of us

in Facilities does is behind the scenes, but even more so with Ben. He is our resident bed expert, saving the Health System a substantial amount of money throughout his years here, with his exceptional knowledge and skill at repairing the patient beds. Ben is always the first one here in the morning, greeting us each with a smile and some whacky comment to get us all laughing. He never hesitates to jump in on any job that needs done or to help out a coworker. His many years with the Health System have provided him with an abundance of knowledge in most aspects of maintenance, and this makes him an excellent teacher. Anyone who knows Ben can attest to the facts that he’s a hard worker, he loves to have a great time and get everyone laughing and that he’s a dedicated member of our Berger Family and the community. Ben sings Berger’s praises wherever he goes, and would make and excellent addition to the Employee of the Quarter group.” Jamie Baker, clinical employee of the year, joined the health system in 2002 and is currently responsible for providing individualized care to patients here at Berger as well as in the community. According to Jamie’s coworker, Rob Snow, “ Jamie’s knowl-edge base and wealth of experience make him universally respected by his coworkers, patients, athletes and coaches at the high school as well local physicians. His expertise is frequently sought out by therapists and other athletic trainers in the PT department. Jamie is someone I consider as both a peer and a role model.”

Rob continued to say that, “Besides responsibilities in the PT department and at Logan Elm High School, Jamie has actually taken on several high level projects, all of which he has been a crucial contributor and has excelled at. One of these projects is our Tackling Cancer Football game. Jamie has also been at the forefront of the 2011 sports physicals. Because of his efforts, we had the highest number of doctors participating at the physicals since Jamie’s hire. We performed nearly 700 physicals. Jamie is also the organizer of our efforts to acquire new software for use at the high schools to track injuries and evaluate con-cussions. Jamie continually displays his passion for his profession, Berger, and Logan Elm High School. He is an ideal advocate of the Berger Way.”
