Hello everyone. Happy anniversary! I hope you all enjoyed the Warwick Forest steak dinner in celebration of our 27th year.

As I am writing this memo, I glance out of my window to see our team members scraping snow from the February 17 storm from around cars and re-salting walkways. It has also been brought to my attention that there have been several nominations for the Champion of Caring awards regarding the extra effort our staff made to be here to serve you. It makes me very proud and I hope you feel the same. Last month, there were five nominations for this award. I’d like to recognize publicly Gayna Bazley, Brenda Brown, Megon Harris, Conesia Johnson and Lakisa Williams for going above and beyond for a team member and for not following the status quo when they knew something was terribly wrong. Their decisive action made a difference.

Champions of Caring is a program developed by Riverside to help us honor team members who make a difference. Residents, families and team members are all encouraged to make a nomination when they encounter a team member giving exceptional care or service. You can nominate online by going to nominate.rivhs.com, or you can stop by the front desk and fill out a form.

FRIDAYS: 8 - 11 a.m.

A change in seasons is an excellent time to be creative about your exercise regimen and try something new. Warmer spring weather and more daylight hours are the perfect combination for exercising and getting work done inside and outside. Activities like walking, bike riding, gardening and house cleaning/chores can burn between 100-200 calories per hour. When venturing outside for that first springtime walk or activity, it’s important to take care of your body and avoid overdoing it. It is important to take the proper precautions to help prevent unnecessary injury and other health issues so you can enjoy summer.

Try out these strategies for better heart health:

• Warm up and stretch before any physical activity (including yard and house work)• Start slow and build your physical activity tolerance gradually• When doing yard work or household chores, be kind to your back by bending forward carefully and at the knees• Use leg and stomach muscles when lifting• Take breaks, especially if you have not engaged in physical activity in a while• Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated• Listen to your body – if something feels uncomfortable or causes pain, stop what you are doing and rest

How to talk to your health care provider: Tips on improving communicationGood communication between you and your health care practitioners is essential to your health. It is important that you share all the information about yourself and your health that your practitioner needs to provide quality care.

Before your appointment, make a list. Write down all your past and current health problems, surgeries and other treatments. Bring your medications or a medication list, including any herbs or vitamins that you take. Answer all questions that your health care practitioner asks you honestly, even if the questions make you feel uncomfortable. And, if you don’t understand what your health care professional tells you during your visit, ask him or her to explain it and ask for written instructions so you can refer to them at any time. Using these simple steps will help improve communication between you and your health care providers.

A message from...Joseph Riss, Chaplain Chaplain Fellowship

with Joseph Riss, Chaplainl Friday, March 13 - 3 p.m. (Manchester Lounge III)Since March will fall completely in the middle

of Lent this year, I thought we could spend alittle extra time each day, praying and pondering the mystery of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. Let us ask God to create a new heart in our lives and our community, so that we may turn away from the ashes of destruction and begin to embrace more fully the new life given us by Christ. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)“ ‘Even now,’ declares the LORD, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’ Rend your heart and not your garments.  Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.”  (Joel 2:12-13)

Hello all! I don’t know about you, but I am ready for spring. I am looking forward to getting outside and I’m sure you are, too. Most of you have heard of the Color Me Rad 5k walk we did last year. This year it will again be at City Center on April 25. Who wants to join us? Any and all are welcome. This is not a timed event so you can walk the 3.1 miles in as long a time as you would like. Your family and friends are welcome to join us as well. I need to have a final head count by March 24. Our team name is “Warwick Forest Warriors” and there is no charge to participate if you sign up through us. Color Me Rad 5k was so inspired by us last year that they waived all registration fees for us this year. Also, it is with mixed emotion that I am announcing Natalie’s resignation from her role as Marketing Manager at Warwick Forest. She has accepted another position within Riverside as Marketing Business Partner and will begin in that role on March 22. Natalie has very meaningful relationships with many of you and will definitely be back from time to time to visit. She will share pictures from her wedding and honeymoon when she gets back from Costa Rica and will still join us on our Color Me Rad 5k walk. Please give us a call at 886-2200 to let us know if you would like to participate and provide your t-shirt size. Let’s get colorful and have a lot of fun in the process!

All the best, Andrea
