A ‘Bag of Tricks’ to complement your teaching and engage primary students
A2 This K-6 interactive session is about increasing your ‘bag of tricks’ to use when the unexpected happens (wet weather, combined
classes, rescheduled spaces, etc.). The session is ideal for teachers wanting to expand their resources with regards to engaging students through fun and interactive activities and games. This practical session will give teachers the opportunity to take part in a series of initiatives and games which can be used to motivate, improve communication, team work and problem solving – or simply to have fun! Teachers will be encouraged to share their own favourites and each participant will walk away with a ‘bag of tricks’ filled with new and innovative activities and games.

Teaching leadership and conflict resolution through physical activity…& PULL!
A3 Physical education classes present some very unique teaching and learning opportunities. Teaching and learning leadership and
conflict resolution skills are often seen as valued but difficult outcomes to achieve. This physically active workshop shows teachers how using a series of tug-of-war activities can elicit a rich learning opportunity to achieve these outcomes.

Screencast-o-matic using as an assessment tool & for visible learning of unpacking an assessment
A4 The focus of this session includes the relevant ICT resource screencast-o-matic for visible learning in the PDHPE Syllabus and
how this content can be incorporated into differentiating teaching strategies. Through examining this resource, and applying knowledge of teaching strategies, teachers will explore how they can develop videos that involve ‘authentic learning’ for 21st century learners. Screencast-O-Matic is a handy tool for recording assessment scaffolding and sharing them with students. With just a few clicks, you can start recording your screen, and once you’re satisfied with your video, you can upload it directly to YouTube and with QR codes go from there.

Learning improvement strategies for students
A5 John Hattie’s meta-analysis of strategies that ‘value add’ to student learning definitively place formative assessment, classroom
discussions and setting high expectations amongst those having greatest effect. This session will provide simple, yet concrete, examples that are easy to adopt, adapt and implement to every teacher’s repertoire that are guaranteed to improve student learning. Delegates will also discuss the importance of simulation and scenario-based learning that encourages real world application and develops higher order thinking.
Rob Malpeli (VIC)Peak Phys Ed Director
ASSESSMENT HPE SEC
Outdoor Education vs education outdoors
A6 Outdoor Education is often associated with images of bushwalking, canoeing, climbing and stories around a campfire. In
Australian schools these experiences are now more commonly being outsourced to external providers or specialists who largely reinforce these traditional perceptions. The purpose of this presentation is to challenge these stereotypical views and invite Health and Physical Education teachers to think more holistically about what Education in the Outdoors can offer their students. Practical examples will be given on how HPE teachers can address these concepts within the framework of the Australian National Curriculum.

Deconstructing HSC Questions and Marking criteria’s to assist your students towards Band 6 in PDHPE
A8 This session will examine the qualities of a Band 6 response in PDHPE through deconstructing the examination rubric and
marking criteria’s. Participants will be able to recognise differences in low order responses through to the higher order response required for a Band 6 in the HSC examination. Teaching strategies to assist students towards achieving a Band 6 response will also be explored.

Physical activity with minimal equipment or confined space and integration of literacy & numeracy
B1 This workshop will focus on getting kids participating quickly and efficiently through fast, energising games which have been
developed for a range of ages. Links to literacy and numeracy will be developed, catering for all students learning needs. Teachers will participate in a variety of activities and skill based games which they can use in their schools across many ages. Participants will learn how to link games to specific sports and their related skills and how to modify games for different stages and ability levels. There will be discussion on differentiating lessons and how to make lessons engaging, fun for all and collaborative. Emphasis will be on maximum participation and on the need for quality and feedback.

Mindful activities for PDHPE or the classroom
B2 Mindfulness is fast becoming one of the most important factors relating to mental and emotional health in our fast paced world.
Not only is there overwhelming evidence of its benefits to our brain but also to our body and overall functioning. Learning to stop, be still and listen is critical to developing calmness and through calmness we can then make the right decisions or take the correct action needed in any moment. This practical based session will give you endless activities that you can undertake with your students to allow them to make contact with that inner calmness, reset their brains for learning or to help them improve their movement performance. These are must have tools that everyone needs!

Addiction maze
C5 The ‘addiction maze’ is designed to facilitate discussion around the issue of addiction, particularly with teenagers. Some
participants are invited to metaphorically experience the highs, lows, frustration and desperation associated with addiction, whilst others make notes of their observations. Some of the ‘addicts’ overdose; others manage to find a way out of the addiction maze. As the observations made by the second group are described, it is possible to facilitate a deep discussion about what addiction may feel like at various stages of its development. It is a powerful metaphor - one the students involved will not forget.

‘Ice’ and other drug use among young people: What can teachers do to prevent the harms?
D5 Prevention is key in reducing the harm associated with use of illegal drugs such as ‘ice’. Use of alcohol and other drugs typically
begins during adolescence, thus teachers play a vital role in educating students about these drugs and empowering them to make positive and informed choices. This interactive session will introduce participants to curriculum-aligned drug education lessons that are engaging, easy to use, and have been extensively trialled in schools with proven benefits including reduced student drug and alcohol use. The session will provide information about the most effective messages to communicate to young people, and demonstrate how to take advantage of the Positive Choices portal to identify and access free evidence-based drug education resources, lesson plans, factsheets, and videos.

Initiatives, energizers & warm-ups with no equipment for students ranging from Years 3 - 10
D6 Come along and participate in a range of activities and small games using no equipment. These activities are great for those
times when your planned lesson just cannot go ahead, you go to the storeroom to find your equipment has already been taken, the start of the year or semester when you have a new class, wet weather and with limited space you still want a valuable PE lesson to go ahead. The games are inclusive, fun and fast. The fun, energetic and challenging individual and team activities can be used with primary student’s right up to university students. Please be prepared to be active, all games will be fully detailed for your future use on a handout.

How tennis is making sense of Game Sense for large groups of students
D7 In this practical workshop, participants will experience a range of tennis activities specifically designed for large groups of school
students of varying abilities within a limited playing area using modified equipment. The workshop, which adopts common and complimentary aspects of the Game Sense approach, will also highlight the concepts of ‘play with purpose’ which involves guided play using questions to shape, focus and make visible player learning, the deliberate modification of task and environmental constraints to meet learning needs of the student at different stages of game development.
