WAY OUT WEST – A BLAST FROM THE PAST

FA CUP with Budweiser 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND SATURDAY 1 OCTOBER 2011 BOURNEMOUTH 0 TRURO CITY 0 In sweltering conditions (and yes we’re talking October here) a fantastic performance by Bournemouth in probably one of the best games seen at the Vic in the last decade, and the team came so close to causing an upset and taking the scalp of a club some 64 places above them in the pyramid system. Kicking towards the Winton End in the opening period the game started at a frantic pace and stayed at a very high level for the whole contest, and whilst there would have been long periods when it was difficult to say who was the higher placed team, hats off to both teams. A nasty injury saw Warren withdrawn before the half hour mark so the home side had to have a hasty realignment. The first real chance of the game came on 38 minutes although both keepers had already had a few good touches of the ball. Daysh launched a free kick from around 15 yards inside his own half into the Winton goalmouth. Sandercombe didn’t make a clean catch and was forced to drop on the ball under pressure from Rowley. Into the second period in front of one of Bournemouth’s best gates for years on 53 minutes Keeler won the ball out wide and his cross picked out Saadi whose first time effort rolled painfully wide of the target. The White Tigers were under the cosh for a period of time and within two minutes Daysh had a great header that flashed over the bar and Saadi again had a chance to get a goal on the hour mark when his curling free kick hit the side netting from close to 25 yards out. Just prior to this though, Truro’s Watkins had also curled an effort just wide of the target. Bournemouth still looked to be the team most likely to score with Blake and Daysh again both coming close, the introduction of Iglewski and Stone nearly paid off replacing Saadi and Pinder as the game entered the final few minutes. With time running out Conference South fitness began to come to the fore and Smith came very close to breaking the hearts of the home support when his shot rolled along the crossbar before being cleared to safety, Bournemouth defended courageously in the final moments to deny the visitors the win, and set up a mouth-watering but difficult replay in Cornwall in three days. POPPIES: Max Frampton, Kane Daysh, Dan Taylor, Joe Byrne, Wayne Crutcher [Captain], Jon Blake, Jake Rowley, Tommy McCormick, Martin Warren (Justin Keeler), Fawzi Saadi (Mariusz Iglewski), James Pinder (Luke Stone). Unused John Wyatt, Max Crow, Dan Alcon, Kenny Vaughan. TRURO CITY: Tim Sandercombe, Edward Palmer, Scott Walker, Arran Pugh, Joe Broad, Danny Clay, Les Afful, Andrew Taylor [Captain], Stewart Yetton (Cody Cooke), Andrew Watkins, Dan Smith. Unused: Kieren Conibear-Trathen, Marcus Martin, Jake Ash, Lee Hodges. REFEREE: Derek Eaton.

FA CUP with Budweiser 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND REPLAY TUESDAY 4 OCTOBER 2011 TRURO CITY 3 BOURNEMOUTH 2 This was the furthest Bournemouth had gone in the competition, both in terms of geography and also for a decade in terms of the game, and the long trek to the far west nearly paid dividends for Bournemouth this evening. An early scare saw the returning Hayles go close with an effort from a tight angle. But it was Bournemouth who almost scored on 8 minutes when Pinder created space for himself on the right at the Clubhouse End of the ground and his teasing shot hit the foot of the near post. Saadi’s follow up saw Sandercombe called into action early to save. The game was very even as in the previous encounter and there was little to choose between the two clubs again. The White Tigers had a couple of chances around the quarter hour, first Taylor on the end of a loose ball teed up Watkins who was feet off target. A Walker free kick was well claimed by Frampton, and four minutes later on 27 minutes, he looked that he would be called upon again, but Watkins wasted a golden chance. In the 35th minute though, Poppies took the lead. McCormick was upended as he sprinted into the area and EWEN (back from suspension) calmly slotted the ball home from the penalty spot. However the Cornish outfit soon got back on level terms when on 48 minutes HAYLES (also returning from suspension) made the most of the visiting defence not being able to clear their lines. Poppies were under pressure for a long period but never really looked in awe of their illustrious hosts. Then

best effort coming on 65 when Afful chased down a back pass and his cross saw Watkins’ shot saved well. Then on 71 Frampton could only parry a shot that Rowley thumped to safety with Watkins hovering menacingly. The ball broke quickly and in what was then a rare Bournemouth foray into the opposition final third a corner from McCormick was headed over by Blake. However it was Bournemouth who again got their noses in front. On 74 minutes sheer determination saw BLAKE strike for home from around 20 yards seeing the ball take a slight deflection as it headed net bound.

The lead only lasted around ten minutes- and ended in somewhat dubious circumstances. Afful whose pace had caused the visitors difficulties most of the evening, ran into the area and fell, and was awarded a penalty. WALKER made no mistake from the spot and within 60 seconds Truro went ahead for the first time in the two games- when substitute MARTIN struck home after McConnell’s initial strike could only be partially cleared by Frampton. There was still time for more though and Sandercombe was forced into making a fine save from Saadi that could have taken the game into extra time but it was not to be and Bournemouth dreams of a visit to Gloucester City in the next round were over. A long journey home then ensued with conditions over Bodmin Moor particularly nasty, but at least Bournemouth had gone the furthest in the FA Cup than any other Wessex side this season, and it’s not often that that happens. TRURO CITY: Tim Sandercombe, Barry McConnell, Scott Walker [83 pen.], Arran Pugh, Edward Palmer, Danny Clay (Marcus Martin [84]), Andrew Taylor [Captain], Joe Broad, Andrew Watkins, Barry Hayles [48], Les Afful (Stewart Yetton). Unused: Cody Cooke, Jake Ash, Lee Hodges. POPPIES: Max Frampton, Jake Rowley, Dan Taylor, Joe Byrne, Wayne Crutcher [Captain], Jon Blake [74], John Wyatt (Mariusz Iglewski), Tommy McCormick, Dave Ewen [35 pen.], Fawzi Saadi, James Pinder. Unused Kenny Vaughan. REFEREE: Lee Swabey.

Another game from Gary’s archives when the Portsmouth Royal Navy side visited Eastleigh for a midweek

Wessex League encounter.

Date: 06/11/1990 Wessex League At: Ten Acres

EASTLEIGH (0) 1 PORTSMOUTH RN (2) 4 Portsmouth RN: Mullen; S Smith, Gilbert; Spinks, Mitchell, Boakes; Hubbard, Aitken, Ormston, Ayling, R Smith. Subs (not used): Guidi and Rule

Notes: Although a change to their present moniker of United Services Portsmouth didn’t occur until much later, the rules relating to qualification to play for the Royal Navy Wessex League side had been more relaxed with effect from the start of this season (1990/91). This trip to Eastleigh proved to be a fruitful exercise for the Navy lads and was their first victory at Ten Acres since 1985. On the night they were most convincing winners too.

The visitors got off to a great start when the ball was put on the ‘proverbial plate’ for Arnie Ormston to tap home in the second minute with the Eastleigh players having hardly left the dressing room! A second goal followed just after the half-hour when the ball was pulled back from the dead-ball line and Phil Boakes was left with a straight-forward opportunity. Another great start to a half for the visitors brought a third goal a minute into the second half, Sean Mitchell heading home a corner from an unmarked position. However, Eastleigh gave the home fans something to cheer as, with the next attack, a half-hit shot by Jamie Griggs was misjudged by the RN keeper and bounced on and into the far corner to make it 3-1 in the Navy’s favour. More chances were created but the scorebook wasn’t troubled further, at least until the 81st minute when a resounding RN victory was sealed by Ormston’s tidy low finish into the far corner but, in truth, it was already over well before then as a fine RN performance produced three points.

One from Gary’s archives and a Dorset Senior Cup tie when Verwood Town visited Chickerell United.

Date: 07/01/2006 Dorset Senior Cup – Round 4 (Quarter Final) At: The Stalls

CHICKERELL UNITED (1) 1 VERWOOD TOWN (0) 2 Verwood Town: Randall; Cobly (sub: Evans 66), Homer; Giles, Lynch, Burner; Arnold, Reeves, Goodall, Elysee (sub: Pidgley 78 [sub: Beverley 90+30]), Dyer. Notes: No there isn’t a typo in the line-ups part, there was a substitution at 90+30 as, with stoppage time just two minutes in, Verwood’s late sub Lee Pidgley went into a challenge. It wasn’t malicious in any way but it was clear that he was in discomfort and needed specialist attention which led to a 32 minute delay to proceedings. This was a cold January afternoon but the early kick-off time, which allowed for extra time to be played, was bright enough to enable the final two minutes of ‘normal’ time to be completed. Such a serious injury is a shame in any game, of course, and often overshadows it. But there are some nasty affairs when you wonder how someone didn’t end up on the receiving end of a bad knock, but this one wasn’t like that whatsoever. The ‘Chickens’, sitting at the very top of the Dorset Senior League, fancied their chances against Verwood from Wessex Division 3, particularly on their home patch. The Stalls was a quaint hemmed-in pitch at the very heart of the community (located in Weymouth) with a most significant slope to it. All the pre-match talk suggested a shock could well be on the cards. However, Verwood had accounted for Wessex Division 1 side Portland United in the previous round so they obviously fancied their chances too. Not too many opportunities were created in the first half; it was like a game of chess with sparring for possession, but no one wanted to give up any ground. A goal eventually came and it went the home side’s way as, pretty much out of nothing, Nick Etherington turned and shot, the ball flashing into the Town net.

Chris Lynch soon levelled things, an angled shot from the right into the far corner on 50 minutes. Verwood had the better of this half but it was getting late when James Burner added their second goal and it proved to be the winner. Then came the unfortunate delay and in the couple of minutes that remained following the restart, Town keeper Colin Randall made an excellent save to keep his side in front. Footnote: Verwood met Hamworthy United In the semi-final at neutral Wimborne Town. It was Verwood who led at the interval on that occasion (a goal from Russell Dyer) but it was the Hammers who turned it around to win 2-1 that time. To complete the story, Hamworthy United went on to take the Dorset Senior Cup, beating Poole Town 2-1 (also played at Wimborne).

The Cowes Sports account has had little activity for a few months, a new account has just been launched for Amesbury Town whilst that for Horndean is distorted. The League feed now has over 6,430 followers, an increase on this time last year of approaching 20%. Overall the number of followers since June 2019 has increased from 72,536 to 84,505 a growth of 14.8% although the trend has slowed down from the initial surge of activity when clubs began to use this method of making announcements. The League one has shown a slightly bigger growth, just short of 19.2% and currently stands at 6,433. The biggest individual club growth has been with Newport IOW where they’ve seen a 58.17% increase, chiefly down to a change of account that perhaps distorts the actual figure. Hamworthy United are the next in rank, with a 51.8% increase since this time last year, and Andover New Street have also seen a 43% growth. Fleet Town are the third best side for followers with 3,536 yet have seen only a small increase over the year, the number of followers possibly a legacy of their days in a higher League?

WHERE TO FIND US- USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You will recall that we included a guide to reaching all our clubs by public transport recently- Premier Division in #46 and the First Division in #47. Clubs were politely requested to check and see if there was anything obviously amiss with this. Please do re-read the relevant Newsletter to confirm.

Please note that the League cannot accept responsibility for any errors or their consequences, the information is based on a game being played on a SATURDAY, and under normal circumstances. I would also repeat that on behalf of the League I am grateful for permission from Andy Edwards to use this information. It is hoped to get this on the League website for each member club in the coming days.

FIND THE MANAGER

Answer the following eleven questions, take the first letter from the surname of each answer and re-arrange same to find the name of a long serving Sydenhams League Manager.

1. The first Black footballer to be capped for England. It was in 1978 and the full back was playing for Nottingham Forest at the time.

2. Liverpool legend and one of the “hard men” of English football. Made over 450 appearances for the Anfield Club between 1962 and 1978, a large number as captain, but won only one England Cap.

3. Trinidad International striker around the turn of the century who played over two hundred games for Villa before moving to Old Trafford. Always played with a smile on his face and was also a decent cricketer.

4. Part of the famous Manchester City forward line that contained the likes of Mike Summerbee and Colin Bell. Barrel chested striker renowned for winning and scoring penalties, all blasted in to the net. Had a spell as a Racehorse Trainer after retiring from football.

5. World famous goalkeeper who played nearly 500 game for Spurs and won 119 Caps or Northern Ireland. One of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation.

6. Israeli International striker who played for Liverpool and Spurs between 1990 and 1997.Whilst with the latter managed to lift the ball over a totally unguarded goal from some six yards out – the clip of which was shown time and again on television. His Christian Name and surname begin with the same initial.

7. Manchester United starlet destined for greatness but killed in the Munich Air disaster when only eighteen. His Christian name was Duncan and he would have been an England regular for years.

8. “Wor Jackie” was a, if not the, Newcastle United legend. You need the surname of this prolific goalscorer.

9. Played 600 games and scored 250 goals for Roma and played fifty eight times for Italy. Enjoyed the delightfully Italian Christian name of Francesco.

10. Hampshire born winger/midfielder who played for Portsmouth and Spurs. Would have won more than his 30 Caps for England but for an appalling injury record that earned him the nickname “sicknote”.

11. Belgian International forward currently at Liverpool who has scored some vital goals from the Bench but unable to break up the Salah, Firmino and Mane front three.

CLUB NEWS

Folland Sports require an enthusiastic new Club Secretary to handle administrative matters for their Wessex League One and Hampshire Combination teams. The club also anticipate entering an under 18s team in the CSYL (City of Southampton Youth Football League). This provides an exciting opportunity to take a route into local football administration with a very long-established and respected club. The outgoing secretary, in his continuing role at the club as Treasurer, will provide all necessary instruction and support to the successful candidate. Should you be interested, then do please contact Jason Simmonds (Vice Chairman) on 07920 513552 or [email protected] One more addition to the FA Cup performance details, Fareham Town also made the FA Cup 1st round in 1979, going down 2-3 to Merthyr Tydfil at Cams whilst members of the Southern League South, that season was their first at that level having finished as runners up (of 16) in the Hampshire League in 1978/79. Jim Macey has been appointed as the Manager at Amesbury Town a return to his old stamping ground, as he was there in the same capacity during the 2015/16 season and they, AFC Portchester and Brockenhurst together with many other teams have been busy in picking up some new signings since the turn of the month. Some really sad news from one of our clubs this week, in that the long serving former Secretary at Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Andy Hardwick- who had also acted as a mentor to a number of current club members across the league- has been diagnosed with a stage 4 aggressive brain tumour for which there is no cure and sad to say, he has been given up to six months to live. Family research has seen that CBD Oil can reduce the rate of the progression of this and give him possibly more use of life for now, but this of course comes at a cost. It is horrible news to impart, but any support that anyone might be able to offer would certainly help Andy and his family at this time, so please do visit https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/andyhardwickcbdoil and donate what you feel you are able.

LEAGUE NEWS – GROUND GRADING

In the recent Step 5 and 6 update from The Football Association, the FA have confirmed that the intention is for those clubs requiring an F or G grade by 31 March 2020 be given an initial extension to carry out the

necessary works by 31 July 2020. The deadline date will be under review taking the Governments latest advice into account and forms part of the emergency Rule/Regulation changes. This extension date to 31 July is also applicable to floodlights and all clubs must have the appropriate certificated pass levels, an average lux reading of at least 120 and 25% uniformity by this date as floodlights form part of the National Ground Grading categories F and G. If clubs have any queries regarding ground grading or floodlights please contact the SWL Ground Grading officer Ian Harley, e mail [email protected]

BOURNEMOUTH FOOTBALL CENTENARY

For you history buffs out there, there’s a new publication looming on the horizon. Celebrating 100 Years of providing local grassroots football within the Bournemouth area it will be an illustrated comprehensive history of the Bournemouth FA and its leagues and will be published in July this year. A copy can be ordered through the local Bournemouth FA office at the cost of £20 each. It has been compiled especially for them by Mr. Ian Claxton who has spent many many hours delving into the archives and old publications to come up with some gems of information. It covers every season from the very beginning up to this moment in time with great detail. Anyone interested in local football will love having a copy on their bookshelves. Please do contact [email protected] to order your copy now, or phone 01202 490000 and leave your name and number and they will get back to you.

FA GUIDANCE ON PERMITTED GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL ACVITITY – UPDATE

The FA have issued further guidance to all grassroots football and informal football activity outside the professional game following the Government’s relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions from 1 June 2020. Consistent with Government advice published on Monday 1 June, the following outdoor football activity is currently permitted: • playing football individually. For example, practice of individual skills or fitness activities. • playing football with your family or other people living in your household. • football training or fitness activities in groups of no more than six, keeping two metres apart at all times.

Sharing of equipment should be kept to a minimum and strong hand hygiene practices should be in place both before and after. Physical contact with anyone outside of an individual’s household is not permitted, therefore

playing of any games (small-sided or full) is also not permitted at this time. Avoid meeting in groups of six in busy or overcrowded areas if it is so busy that it is not possible to maintain social distancing at all times. Football coaches can now undertake small group sessions up to six people (including the coach) but are reminded to follow FA safeguarding policy when coaching and or working with children. This must include risk assessing the activities, gaining consent from parents and or carers and that the activity takes place in sight of another adult. For example, a parent, carer or another coach and that the ratio of coach to different age-groups of children is appropriate. For clarity, the additional parent/carer or coach is not included as part of the group of six but must remain in sight of the activity. It is permissible for coaches to organise a training session that has two or more groups of six (including the coach) involved in the session, as long as the groups of six are kept separate, everyone is socially distancing and strict hygiene measures are in place with any equipment. Football coaches working with people with impairments must ensure they can adequately cater for any additional needs whilst still avoiding physical contact and maintaining social distancing. Individuals should follow Government guidance relevant to their own impairment or health condition. Please be reminded, if an individual is symptomatic, living in a household with a possible COVID-19 infection or if you're classified as extremely vulnerable on health grounds, the guidance is that you should remain at home. The FA will continue to work closely with Sport England and the Department for Culture Media in order to set out good practice guidance for those responsible for delivering different aspects of grassroots football and will provide further updates as and when such guidance information is shared. Please visit the FA website for this and more information- http://www.thefa.com/news/2020/jun/01/grassroots-football-covid-19-guidance-update-010620

NEWPORT “ARDLEY” BREAK SWEAT IN THE VASE

We are back on the FA Vase trail this week with our Programme piece and journeying back in time to December 2012 and the Third Round of the Competition that season. Newport had defeated fellow Premier Division side Alresford Town, former members Swanage and Herston and Cadbury Heath from the Western League Premier to reach this stage and were rewarded with an away tie at Hellenic Premier League Club Ardley United. Ardley is a Village in Oxfordshire just off the M40 if you exit at the Cherwell Valley Services and follow the B430 for a very short distance, and four or five miles from Bicester, and it’s main claim to fame is a limestone quarry in which dinosaur tracks were discovered in 1997 though the perpetrators of same have not as yet been found! Ardley had played one less game than Newport – the Island side had to play in the Second Qualifying Round - and had won away at Cheltenham Saracens by the odd goal in three and Horsham YMCA 1-0. They are long time members of the Hellenic League – they finished fifth in the season in question – and when they were relegated in 2017/18 they regained their Premier League status at the first attempt.

The ground was easily located in the middle of the village but the entry to same was seemingly almost non-existent. Having parked in the Car Park on the side of the main road it was possible to walk across an area of grass that would easily have held another pitch to reach the pitch proper. There was no fencing round the ground and you simply walked up to the rope that separated the spectators from the playing area with no sign of any admission “gate” or procedures. The Clubhouse which was superb - as was the hospitality – was towards the corner of the ground behind the goal on the far side but the ground grading standard seemed to be interpreted somewhat loosely, for example as to whether there was an entrance there is uncertain, though memory suggests that at some time during the game a gentleman came round collecting admission monies from those standing on the car park side. If that was the case one suspects that they rather lost out financially over the course of their campaign, though in fairness it has improved over recent seasons. The Newport line-up in the Programme included such as Gary Streeter, Darren Powell, Iain Seabrook, Tom McInnes and Jon McKie,

though the first named did not play on the day, whilst the home side was managed by Kevin Brock who had a more than useful playing career with such as Oxford United and Newcastle United and once, earlier, applied for the Manager’s job at Andover citing a possible weekly wage that was rather a long way in excess of what was on offer! The game was played in warm sunshine, rather unseasonable for the second Saturday in December and, despite the Clubs being of equal status, was rather one sided on the day. My match report disappeared some time ago in a laptop disintegration and I cannot remember the order of the scoring, but some gratefully acknowledged help from Newport ascertained that their scorers were Joe Rayner, Tom McInnes and two from Aleks Przespolewski in a comfortable 4-1 win for the Wessex League side. The result marked the end of what was then, and still is, Ardley’s best run in the Competition whilst Newport entertained Yorkshire side Brighouse in the next round, which was covered in an earlier Newsletter, before losing to Ascot, something of a Vase nemesis to the Club, in Round Five. Newport also finished sixth in the League at the end of the season. Another enjoyable afternoon in the world of non-league football.

WEEK FORTY FIVE ROUND UP

This week, we’ve been saying thank you to volunteers across our League for giving their time to help out. Why not drop the Newsletter Editor a few lines giving details of someone at your club who you feel deserves our thanks.

New season update: The FA have invited all Step 5 and 6 leagues to an online meeting to discuss scenarios for the National League System 2020-21 season on June 19th in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 issue. At least we now know nothing is likely to be decided in the next couple of weeks. It remains difficult to provide clarity at this time.

THE LAST WORD Some personal thoughts on the resumption of the game at our level- whatever happens with a return to the game, be it as a player, administrator, official, volunteer or supporter the level of risks we will each encounter will be different. It will be for the Government to decide when we can start, so perhaps whilst we await more information perhaps clubs can think of the steps that can be taken to make sure we are ready to kick off. For those off the pitch at our level it should be relatively easy to maintain social distancing with plastic screens made available to help- particularly where people may gather, the tea bar for example and contactless payment methods need to be investigated with a view to implement at turnstile and for refreshments. The relaxing of rules announced this week means that up to six people, so that would be five plus one coach, may meet outdoors for non-contact fitness and training but also subject to obeying the current rule over maintaining the two metre rule. On match day, it may be the case that team players and support staff will be advised to travel individually to and from the venue and that there needs to be some form of screening process in place, certainly hand sanitiser to be readily available, and perhaps some form of temperature reading tool. Player equipment- be it footballs, cones, bibs and the like should be disinfected prior to and after use. A one way system at the ground should be a straightforward scenario to implement at least for those off the pitch, although some clubs will find it a big challenge with the changing facilities. The social distancing policy with the latter should be observed with occupancy restricted to the minimum although different rules already exist about the use of showers. Perhaps it will be the case that players should expect to travel wearing as much kit as they can to assist in reducing time within the changing room before and after a game or training session.
