THE BUILDBASE FA VASE FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND

The draw for the above in respect of teams in our League looks like this: AFC PORTCHESTER v BEMERTON HEATH H’QUINS ALRESFORD TOWN v AFC STONEHAM AMESBURY TOWN v LYMINGTON TOWN BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS v BASHLEY BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY v FOLLAND SPORTS Corsham Town v BROCKENHURST COWES SPORTS v Devizes Town EAST COWES VICTORIA v Westbury United Farnham Town v DOWNTON FAWLEY AFC v RINGWOOD TOWN

FLEET TOWN v Newent Town HYTHE & DIBDEN v VERWOOD TOWN NEW MILTON TOWN v ANDOVER NEW STREET NEWPORT IOW v Calne Town PORTLAND UNITED v HAMBLE CLUB ROMSEY TOWN v Selsey SHAFTESBURY v Badshot Lea TADLEY CALLEVA v Wallingford

Eighteen ties off which exactly half pair Wessex Clubs against each other. Too many, as usual, but given the current concerns over health and travel it perhaps could have been more had the draw been more strictly regionalised. Four of the nine are all-Premier Division ties starting with Amesbury against Lymington. The Wiltshire Club have had another overhaul of management and players in the close season but Lymington will probably start favourites though they will need to solve their inconsistency. Hamble Club, who have a good record in there albeit short time in the Competition, travel to Portland who are usually strong on their own ground and Alresford face AFC Stoneham. The home side are something of an unknown quantity with a change of manager and playing staff while Stoneham are settled and that should give them the edge. The last of the four is difficult to call with Baffins Milton Rovers at home to Bashley. The New Forest side are stronger on their own soil but perfectly capable of causing an upset. Division One has three ties all to itself with last season’s Title challengers Hythe & Dibden leading the way when they entertain Verwood. The Potters showed signs of improvement as last season progressed but face a difficult task. Ringwood travel to Fawley with both sides lacking in consistency last season and home advantage may decide the outcome whilst Andover New Street head south to New Milton. On last season’s form an away win would be suggested but New Milton are showing signs of having a good season and could come out on top. This leaves two matches where Premier meets Division One and one could be one of the ties of the round as free scoring Bemerton Heath travel to AFC Portchester. The Salisbury side do not lack in experience whilst Portchester look to have assembled a strong squad. An enjoyable afternoon in prospect. The last tie sees the returning Blackfield & Langley welcoming Follands to the Waterside. The home side have lost last season’s Management team and a host of players but should still prove too strong. The Western League provide the opposition in four games including an invasion of the Isle of Wight. Premier Division Westbury United face East Cowes Vics, who rarely find the Vase to their liking, whilst Newport entertain Calne who were topping Division One when the season was halted. With both ties scheduled for Beatrice Avenue, it’s been confirmed that Vics will play on the Saturday and Newport on the Sunday. Cowes Sports are also at home with Devizes crossing the Solent. The Wiltshire side are in Division One of the Western League and may find the Yachtsmen too strong.

Brockenhurst complete the quartet and are the only ones who have to travel, with a trip to Corsham. Again the opposition are in Division One so every hope of progress. Tadley and Fleet, both in the north of the county have home ties with Hellenic League Division One sides. Tadley face Berkshire side Wallingford who were mid table in Division One East last time round whilst Newent Town make the near one hundred mile journey to Fleet from just north west of Gloucester. They finished in the bottom two and it may be a disappointing outcome to a long journey. Two from the Combined Counties – one home and one away. Shaftesbury remain in Dorset and meet Badshot Lea who were mid table in the Premier Division but Downton have to travel to Farnham who were closer than anyone to the all-conquering Jersey Bulls in Division One, but have lost their Manager in the close season and that generally means a loss of players as well. Lastly a rare meeting with the Southern Combination League as Selsey, from Division One, journey to Romsey. Both at the same level so again home advantage may decide.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Tuesday 8 September PREMIER DIVISION Bashley 0-3 Hamworthy United After such a good win at Portland on the opening day, this was a strangely inept performance by the hosts against a Hamworthy side that was not slow to take full advantage writes Roger Allen. Dan Cann had already had a headed opportunity that had gone wide albeit from an offside position when he was presented with a gift of an opening goal in the 13th minute. I won't embarrass the culprit but, in trying to play out from the back, a square pass across the face of the penalty area, was intercepted by a totally unmarked CANN and two touches later the ball was in the back of the net. Two minutes later the Hammers doubled their lead when Max Buckler fed Cam MUNN and his low shot across Harry Gravett found the far corner. Next it was Matt Neale's turn to take advantage of a lax home defence by twisting and turning to get away a fierce shot that Gravett did well to beat away. Around 5 minutes from half time Bashley did finally threaten but Connor Whiteley's shot was weak and easily cleared. Before the half Hamworthy threatened again with Cann having a shot saved and Munn forcing Gravett to make a finger-tip save at the expense of a corner. HT 0-2 Hamworthy again started the second half well after Bashley had been dealt a significant blow with the substitution of Harry Bunce, the only player to have troubled the Hammers defence. Hamworthy had a corner headed off the line by a defender on the hour but this was a rare chance until the 70th minute when Bashley had their best attack of the evening. Lewis Ross brought a good save from Shane Murphy in the Hammers goal and in the ensuing scramble the ball rebounded off a post into the keeper's grateful hands. This stirred Hamworthy back into goalmouth action as Cann and Munn exchanged passes to set up Declan Randall to fire just wide. And in the 88th minute it was Randall again up from the back who triggered the move that CANN finished well. All in all a sound performance by Hamworthy which bodes well for the season but for Bashley a significant improvement will be needed as they take on local rivals, Christchurch in The Emirates FA Cup. FT 0-3 Tuesday 8 September RUSSELL-COTES CUP SEMI FINAL Christchurch 0-0 Sholing The curtailed 2019/20 season’s Russell-Cotes Cup competition is being played to a conclusion, so Christchurch met Sholing in a semi-final game that was the actual final in the previous campaign. The game was hard fought over the ninety minutes with both teams, appreciating the importance of the occasion, playing in a determined mood but there was a distinct lack of productivity overall. Defensive coaches would be salivating on their respective team’s performance as there were hardly any worthwhile chances created. This was particularly due to Sholing’s Byron Mason and Church’s Billy Walker having outstanding games at the back. The ball, when it came into the box, seemed to be attracted to the Sholing skipper like a magnet, which of course is testament to his excellent positional play in the visiting defence. Gosney made a decent first half save as Wilcock got up to head the ball downwards from a Pope corner and the Sholing keeper, like a slip fieldsman, launched himself across to parry and then pounce on the loose ball. Frost for the home side, pumped a long ball into the Sholing box but, this time, Gosney mishandled but bravely recovered to save as Graham challenged which the referee, perhaps harshly, decided was worthy of a yellow card for the home player. At the other end Targett seemed to wriggle clear of the home back line but the alert Walker got across to put in a firm, fair and effective tackle. Did Church keeper Gunstone-Gray handle the ball just outside his box close to half-time; it looked like he did but got away with it. HT 0-0

Bulpitt and Finch shot over from distance for their teams early in the second half which continued as the first with a battle, both sides giving nothing away. Christchurch tried to win it late on, but Stone was crowded out and Finch got in a shot that went a fair bit wide but about as good as any in the half. Again, defences dominated proceedings. FT 0-0 Sholing went first and progressed with a 5-3 win on penalties, Keeper Gosney guessed well to dive to his right to keep out Fletcher’s effort which was Christchurch’s second kick of the shoot-out. All the other penalties were quite well stuck away, including Gosney who took Sholing’s fourth and it was an ‘emphatic roof of the net job’. Walker kept Christchurch in it by netting, but it just delayed things a little longer as Roundell administered the final blow with a well taken kick into the top corner. The holders now meet Lymington Town in the final on a date to be arranged. Out of interest, whilst it is unusual to conclude a cup competition in the following season, it isn’t unique for the Russell-Cotes as this also occurred in 1937 (when Lymington FC lost a replayed game) and in 1969. Tuesday 8 September PREMIER DIVISION Shaftesbury 1-2 Bournemouth My 21st visit to Cockrams and a game that was a close fought encounter in good spirits that ended probably with the Rockies disappointed not to have converted the many chances they had writes Mike Robins. Two mistakes cost the hosts the game. Although it started at a frantic rate with Shaftesbury forcing a series of corners in the opening minutes it was the Poppies who scored first. A long clearance from a corner saw Hatchard play the ball square across his

own penalty area and it was latched on to by the Bournemouth striker who was brought down. Lewis HARVEY converted with just four minutes on the clock. Shaftesbury worked some great openings but simply couldn’t find a way past the visiting defence. The scorer made a superb challenge to stop a strike and Raney was also well placed with another timely challenge to halt Charlie Kendall. At times it was a bit like the Alamo in the Poppies defence and midway through the half it began to look like they would grab an equaliser with Connor Millar and Oli Lowes both squandering good

opportunities, and Aaron Lane-Leney was also thwarted by a great diving save by Kacper Kowalczyk. It wasn’t all one way as Martin Warren and Jamie Wilson caused problems for the home defence and were perhaps unlucky not to extend the lead but for a couple of decent stops from Paul Woods. HT 0-1 A shortened interval, or so it felt with both teams keen to get on with it. The hosts began to lose their way and again it was the Poppies defence very much in control of proceedings. For whatever reason, the home Manager calls his team for a quick briefing whilst a Bournemouth player received treatment. It didn’t work because moments after the resumption, a bizarre own goal gave the visitors a two goal cushion. A striker was given offside and the free kick quickly taken, I have to admit my eyes were somewhere else and when I looked up again, I saw the ball curling behind Woods and drop into the far corner. Odd. Poppies had two good chances for a third with a fine chest trap and shot from Warren well claimed by Woods and Wilson sprinted from halfway only to see the final touch again claimed well by Woods. With time running out, and I have to confess not sure where all the added on time came from, Oli ROBERTS popped up in the six yard area to make amends for his earlier faux-pas to pull one back for the hosts in the second minute of added on time according to my watch. Again the visiting defence threw everything in front of the ball to protect the lead and with over 50 minutes on my stopwatch were certainly glad when the referee did bring the proceedings to a finish. FT 1-2

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 11

Tuesday 8 September PREMIER DIVISION Alresford Town 3-0 Amesbury Town A meeting between two Clubs who had both lost their opening matches and who had both undergone significant changes since the early cessation of last season. For Alresford it has been a complete make over, both on and off the field, while Amesbury have re-appointed Jim Macey as manager and attracted some players back to the Club who had left in last season’s upheaval writes John Gorman. The opening exchanges saw both sides matching each other with a cross from the visitors Jordan Matthews evading everybody at the far post and a free kick at the other end finding its way through a crowded penalty area to goalkeeper Jordan Tewkesbury. The keeper was quickly in action again, after the ball was given away in the process of trying to play it out of the area, with a smart reflex save to deny Ashley Elson. A spell of Amesbury pressure saw Edward McCrea only inches too high from distance before Matthews came even closer with his shot coming back in to play off the inside of the post. Home skipper Darryl Phillips showed commendable persistence in getting a cross in from the left but a feature of the opening quarter was both sides very much over hitting their crosses. Play settled largely in midfield before a dangerous looking Amesbury free kick was headed behind for a corner with Alresford surviving the resultant goalmouth scramble. A well timed tackle in the area by George Sheridan halted a visiting attack before a challenge at the other end was not so successful. Louis Russell fastened on to a long clearance from goalkeeper Aaron Bufton and the challenge from the defender was both from behind and in the area and there could be few complaints over the penalty award. RUSSELL took the kick himself and after the now popular stuttering run up squeezed the ball in to the corner, Tewkesbury getting a hand to the ball but unable to keep it out with the goal coming ten minutes before the break. Russell then had another shot well saved and the half ended with Bufton beating away a fierce free kick from Dave Parry to ensure his side stayed ahead at the halfway point. HT 1-0 An early free kick on the re-start saw Phillips only just wide with an acrobatic overhead kick at the far post and this was followed by a “pinball” scramble of the highest order in the visiting goalmouth before the ball was finally cleared, Home keeper Bufton was fortunate when he dallied far too long on the ball and had to win two challenges before getting his clearance in before there was a pause in play – one is tempted to say “paws” – while a stray dog was removed from the playing area. After a spell largely marked by both keepers continually kicking the ball to each other with the outfield players resembling a crowd at Wimbledon as they looked on, the twenty minute mark saw Alresford increase their advantage. ELSON’s speed enabled him to reach a ball played down the left flank and he showed good control before rounding the advancing Tewkesbury and slotting the ball home. In what was a short personal duel between goalkeeper and striker, Tewkesbury beat ELSON to a through ball with his defence split but could do nothing when the striker collected a right-wing cross and fired the ball low in to the corner of the net. Midway through the half and effectively game over. The customary raft of second half substitutions somewhat broke the game up but Amesbury to their credit did not give up and central defender Adam Pearson twice threatened with headers after re-enforcing his forwards at corners. Both goalkeepers still had time to make their mark again with Tewkesbury turning a Sonny Hynes effort over the bar and Bufton at full stretch to turn away a shot from Chris Morris before the final whistle bought affairs to a halt. So, no further goals and a game played in good spirit and well refereed. Three cautions, two given to players who had already been spoken to – if they cannot listen what else can the referee do – and the third for the most blatant shirt pull that will probably be seen this season. It is to the credit of Amesbury’s kit makers that the shirt is still in one piece! The result was fair on the night, though there was not a three goal difference between the sides. The visitors lacked threat in front of goal while Elson - stocky, barrel chested and very quick – will worry a few defences over the coming months. FT 3-0 To finish on a sartorial note, on a balmy September evening in North Hampshire one player wore gloves!

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 11

LEAGUE NEWS The Prime Minister announced on Wednesday new measures and legislation with regards to coronavirus. To confirm, team sports are permitted to continue and the FA received clarification from DCMS that this also includes the continuation of spectators at current levels attending at steps 3 and below. The Step 3 and 4 Leagues were scheduled to meet on Friday (11th) whilst the Step 5 and 6 Leagues are scheduled to meet on Monday, where this and other implications for clubs following this announcement will be discussed. Organised football activity is currently permitted at these levels but it is extremely important that clubs, players, coaches, match officials, league officials, volunteers, parents, carers, and facility providers continue to strictly follow both the Government and FA guidelines that have been published. We also understand that all (our) players registered through the Whole Game System should have had an email directly from the FA as regards changes and protocol to follow with the new restrictions. It is in everyone’s own interest to ensure that we follow the guidelines. Supporters are the life force of our national sport and The FA hopes to see them return in greater numbers across the country as soon as it is safe and possible. However, we must continue to work together and play our part by following all the relevant guidelines if this is to become a reality. The Premier League recently launched the Matchday Support Fund, which helps clubs prepare for the restart of football and safe return of supporters to their stadia. In total, 65 leagues and more than 1,100 clubs will be able to benefit from this financial support. The application window is now open to eligible National League System clubs in Steps 1-6, the Welsh Premier League and FA Women’s Pyramid clubs in Tiers 1-5. It will help clubs to put measures in place that will make grounds safer for the 2020/21 season in accordance with their COVID-19 Risk Assessments. This announcement follows the recent publication of Government and FA guidelines for the return of football and spectators. A range of grants are available through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund to help clubs make physical changes to infrastructure in line with FA guidance to cater for reduced capacity and social distancing measures. The funding can also be used for specialist consultancy support around risk assessments, implementing IT and ticketing, contactless payments, hand sanitisation points and supporter engagement. The application window runs from Wednesday 2 September to 5pm on Wednesday 16 September, so there’s not much time left if you’ve not yet applied. It’s a simple process, so clubs should apply to the FSIF directly and not through third parties. For more information about eligibility and how you can apply, look for the Matchday Support Fund on the Football Foundation website.

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

An almost full Premier Division programme with eight matches on Tuesday and one on Wednesday along with two Cup ties carried over from last season. The League first and the “big game” on the night was at Cams Alders with the local derby between Fareham and AFC Portchester and a crowd in excess of two hundred saw the home side inflict Portchester’s first defeat of the season by two goals to one. Archie Wilcox and Gary Austin were the Fareham heroes with Steve Ramsey claiming Portchester’s consolation. Not too far away Horndean made it two wins out of two with a best of three win over Fleet Town with Harry Jackson and Robbie Taw on the mark for the “Deans” with the visitors reply coming from a Billy Oram penalty. Including the FA Cup this was Fleet’s third consecutive game on the road and they will be looking forward to playing on home soil at the weekend. Westward and nearly two hundred in place at Bashley, though probably a fair percentage of them would have been disappointed by the result, with Hamworthy United making the short journey home with a 3-0 win under their belts thanks to two goals from Dan Cann and a single from Cameron Munn.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 11

A first point for Portland after a disappointing start to the campaign with a goal from Adam Grange cancelled out by a Will Tickle effort for Brockenhurst at the Meadens Skoda Arena. Blackfield & Langley made it six points out of six with their second 1-0 victory, this time at Cowes, with player manager Fawzi Saadi leading from the front with the only goal. AFC Stoneham bounced back from Saturday’s home defeat in style with a 6-1 victory at Tadley. Two goals apiece for Matt Bainbridge and Cal Laycock and single efforts from Alex Welch and Jo Sutherden and the home side’s reply from George Farrelly came when they were already five down. Alresford and Amesbury, both pointless after one game, met at Arlebury Park with the home side coming out on top by three goals to nil with a brace from Ashley Elson and a penalty from Louis Russell. The final game on the evening saw Bournemouth, who conceded five on Saturday, take all three points at Shaftesbury though their own side seemingly helped in their own downfall. Lewis Harvey gave the Poppies the lead from the penalty spot and later conceded a bizarre own goal. Awarded a free kick for offside a defender played it back to the goalkeeper without looking, the goalkeeper was not where he thought he was and the ball rolled gently in to the unguarded net. These things happen – but not very often! Oli Roberts made amends by netting a late consolation for the Rockies. One game on Wednesday and honours even between old rivals Baffins Milton Rovers and Hamble Club in a 1-1 draw watched by just over two hundred spectators. Ryan Wilkins gave the visitors the lead before Callum Dart restore parity. Four points out of six for Baffins and a first point of the season for “the Monks”. Finally, the two Cup ties were in the Russell-Cotes Cup which had reached the semi-final stage when last season was aborted. The Hampshire FA sensibly decided that with only three games to be played it could be completed. A Craig McAllister goal, the only one of the evening, gave Lymington victory at First Division Alton while in a game of few, if any, chance Christchurch and Sholing could not manage a goal between them in ninety minutes at Hurn Bridge. Last week Christchurch progressed in the FA Cup via the penalty shoot-out but this time the boot, or boots, were on the other foot as Sholing triumphed 5-3. So, it will be a Sholing Lymington Cup Final on Tuesday 20 October, and will be played at the Mackoy Stadium.

CLUB NEWS

First up, a couple of adjustments to the gates from the last edition. In the Emirates FA Cup Tadley Calleva’s gate should have read 128 rather than 18, and from last Saturday- in the Premier Division, Hamworthy United against Christchurch was 181 rather than 81. Apologies for the errors. Another result from midweek saw Moneyfields hit four without reply against Denmead to progress in the Portsmouth Senior Cup, to the Semi Final where they will play Fareham Town on a date to be confirmed. This is for the 2019/20 competition and will not be contested this season. Some sad news to report from Bemerton Heath H’quins I'm afraid George Parker has passed away. A minute silence was held at their Charity game against Salisbury on Wednesday (see below). Born in Liverpool in December 1938 not far from Goodison Park, he moved to Salisbury during the Second World War and attended Shaftesbury Grammar School at the end of his education. He joined Bemerton Athletic as a 15 year old and has been with them ever since. George had long been associated with the club filling more than one position behind the scenes in his time, including player, team manager, sponge man, groundsman, car park attendant, media officer, chairman, committee member and Life Vice-President. His 60th anniversary with the club was celebrated way back in June 2013. he will be sorely missed by all at Moon Park, and on behalf of the League we extend our thoughts and condolences at this sad time to family and friends of George. As mentioned above, the H’quins held a charity match against Salisbury raising awareness and fund toward the Stars Appeal, and we hope it went well for all involved. A Greg Peel goal enough to give the hosts a 1-0 win. The Stars Appeal is Salisbury District Hospital’s Charity. experience. They’re aiming to raise £1million this year to fund projects which offer direct, practical support to patients and their families, over and above what our NHS provides. The club also announced that they are losing Ian Saunders as Manager due to an overseas work opportunity- he will be succeeded at Moon Park by Jamie Cotton. We are also saddened to hear from Tadley Calleva of the passing of striker Clive Makoni, he scored seven goals from 13 starts last season for our north Hampshire colleagues, and played for a number of clubs locally including Bashley. On behalf of the League we extend our thoughts and condolences to family and friends at this sad time.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORT Saturday 12 September DIVISION ONE New Milton Town 1-3 Laverstock & Ford An afternoon that had begun so promisingly for New Milton Town ended so disappointingly as they ended up with a deficit of two both in terms of goals and players left on the pitch. They took the lead with the first attack as Tyrell SAMPSON received the ball on the edge of the penalty area in an unmarked position and sent a low shot past Tom Roberts in the Laverstock goal. Shortly after the same player was wide with a header from a corner. At this stage Laverstock's defence were stretched by a New Milton side that looked well organised but Laverstock are not a team that will be denied chances. Archie Lovegrove put a header wide from a corner then Jake Rawkins had a shot blocked. An open game was anticipated between these two sides and so it was proving. Adam Bourner shot wide for Laverstock then Chris Long headed wide for the home team when well placed. On 25 minutes Laverstock struck back though there was an element of good fortune about the goal. Chae Sykes had a shot diverted to Rawkins whose shot was saved by Luke Dennison but the ball fell kindly for SYKES who scored with a low shot. By this time Laverstock had settled into the game but the balance of the chances before half time fell to the home side with Daniel Haynes spurning two chances to score. HT 1-1

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 11

The opening goal of the first half came in the 4th minute and the same happened in the second. Jake RAWKINS was fully 25 yards out when he received the ball from Sykes and unleashed a vicious shot that flew past Dennison who might have done better. Next it was Russell JONES' turn to take the limelight when first he shot wide when in a good position but he was on hand at the far post in the 69 minute to side foot home from close range. In the following minute any hope that New Milton would get back in the game became very remote as Chris Long received his marching orders for retaliating after he had been fouled then Haynes was wide with a header when he really should have done better. Worse was to follow for New Milton in the closing minutes as they were reduced to 9 men when Charles Turner received a second yellow. By now Laverstock were in full control and saw out the remaining minutes with ease. FT 1-3 Saturday 12 September DIVISION ONE Alton 5-1 Andover Town Both sides started the afternoon with one hundred per cent records – albeit having only played one game – and it was the home side who maintained their record, and in some style, with an ultimately convincing victory. In bright sunshine and under blue skies the game took a while to get going with the only initial moment of note coming when visiting goalkeeper Dease Kerrison had to come a long way out of his area to clear a through ball. Eventually, on thirteen minutes, Alton fashioned the first chance when George Bowerman chested the ball in to Richie Hunter’s path but the shot was both high and a little wayward. Billy Wright sent Hunter clear on the right with the cross blocked and as the home side enjoyed a spell of pressure they wasted a free kick in a dangerous position with a rather scuffed effort that was well wide. Josh Bertie relieved that pressure with a shot that was straight at home keeper Keiron Greene and at the other end a free kick from Matt Graham’s trusty left foot was well held by Kerrison in a crowded area. Hunter was just wide from another Bowerman cross before, against the run of play, Andover took the lead. A long free kick in to the area from the left touchline somehow found its way in to the net with full back Liam Hammond, who took the kick, receiving the congratulations though it was subsequently credited as an own goal. To the dismay of the visitors the lead lasted barely sixty seconds as they failed to deal with a bouncing ball which Scott SANDERSON deftly controlled and fired past Kerrison. These two goals came around the thirty minute mark and within a further five minutes the home side were ahead with a goal of real quality. A high cross from the right was palmed away by Kerrison to the right of his goal only for SANDERSON to strike the sweetest of volleys on the half turn back across the keeper and high in to the net, If Alton have an award for goal of the season that is an early contender. The home side continued to press with Bowerman denied by Kerrison’s legs before the keeper was down quickly to cling on to a Hunter effort. Two became three as the watch hovered around forty five minutes and there seemed no danger as a low cross field ball reached SANDERSON some twenty yards from goal, The Alton stalwart had other ideas however and his first time strike flew low in to the corner of the net. First half hat trick to add to his numerous debates with referee White when decisions were not to his liking. HT 3-1 The second half started with two cautions in as many minutes for the respective number threes. The referee pointed out to Hammond that this was not the first such challenge he had made while Graham went into the book for bringing down Bertie in full flight with the ball not very close to hand. Understandably perhaps the home side were now on top and a third caution followed – one that left the referee little option and the sort that must turn Managers hair grey. Andover’s Zac Hine thought a goal kick should have been a corner -though he would have found few in agreement – and picked the ball up before petulantly kicking it out of the ground. Hopefully the home club were able to retrieve same. Bowerman was high at one end and Bertie had a shot saved at the other before Greene received a second warning for time wasting.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 11

To their credit Andover were still battling but could make no impression in the final third whilst their defence never looked comfortable, especially in the middle. The statutory substitutes came and went and the game was meandering towards the close when Alton produced another quality goal. The Andover defence, as they had been prone to do all afternoon, stood off and Matt Benham’s effort from some twenty yards left the valiant Kerrison clutching fresh air. With four in the bag there was still time for Alton to go nap and again the defence was at fault as nobody moved to meet a low cross and substitute Chris Horton tucked the ball past the unprotected goalkeeper. Still time for the first sin bin seen this season – though not time to serve the entire ten minutes - and the last kick of the game saw a defiant strike from the visitors Ben Emans saved at full stretch by Greene. That is two out of two for Alton with nine goals scored and whilst Andover may feel that they were a little hard done by with the score line, their defending on the day cost them dearly. FT 5-1

WEEK 2 ROUND UP

The Preliminary Round of the FA Cup and three of our sides through to the first Qualifying Round and some determined performances from those that went out. Congratulations in order for AFC Stoneham, Christchurch and Cowes Sports who will be in the proverbial FA hat on Monday. Stoneham enjoyed a 3-0 win over Southern Combination (formerly the Sussex League) side Pagham with goals from Alex Welch, Ben Clarke and Edu Jiminez while an Ewan Cranwell penalty, the only goal of the game gave Cowes Sports victory over Hamble Club. Nearly two hundred spectators at Westwood Park and just in excess of the two hundred mark at Bashley where the home side went down to their second successive home defeat, this time to near neighbours Christchurch with goals from Billy Walker and Ash Pope seeing the Hurn Bridge side home. Bemerton, with manager Ian Saunders relinquishing the reins in midweek, kept Sholing to a single goal at Western Way and Hamworthy United went out by the same scoreline at Hartley Wintney. Lymington came even closer, holding Farnborough to a goalless draw at Cherrywood Road before going out four three on penalties but AFC Portchester found Wimborne too strong at the Cuthbury, conceding three goals without reply. So with one FA Cup tie outstanding our top prize fund winners in the competition look like this, the three who have earned £2,569.00 will add to their reward in the next round.

Tadley Calleva £ 1,125.00 The FA Cup reduced the Premier Division to just five games and Baffins Milton Rovers take centre stage after defeating Portland 8-1, probably the Dorset side’s worse defeat since joining the League. Rudi Blankson recorded the first four timer of the season, Tommy Scutt claimed a hat trick and James Cowan made it eight as Portland’s dreadful start to the season continues. Horndean made it nine points out of nine with a best of seven win at Shaftesbury and have now scored eleven goals in their three matches to date. Steve Hall, Connor Duffin, Harry Jackson and Tommy Tierney were on the mark with the home goals coming from Oli Lowes, Sean Colohan and an own goal. Fareham followed up their midweek win over Portchester with three more points at Brockenhurst courtesy of a three two victory. Casey Scott-Bartlett, Curt Robbins and an own goal for the Creeksiders with Will Tickle and James Shorey replying for the home side. The remaining two games finished all square with Alresford and Blackfield & Langley sharing two goals, Ashley Elson scoring for the hosts and Fatah Makhloufi for Blackfield, and it finishing two all between Fleet Town and Bournemouth. Billy Oram and Dan Bone for Fleet with Poppies marksmen being Joe Bennett and Nick Wiggett. On to Division One and first up have to be Folland Sports. 5-2 winners on the road last week, they opened their home programme with another five, this time at the expense of Ringwood Town. James Johnson, Clayd Roach, Brady Johnson, Matt Casey and Harry Osman with the goals and the visitors’ consolation coming from Harrison Clarke. Close behind the Planemakers are Alton whose 5-1 win over Andover Town gives them six points with nine goals scored. Scott Sanderson claimed a hat trick with further goals from Matt Benham and Chris Horton while Andover’s goal was of the OG variety. Romsey also made it two wins out of two with an impressive 4-1 win at Whitchurch with goals from Jack Odam, Liam Magee, Geoff Dunn and Ben Rowthorn. Mikey Davis replying for Whitchurch. Four sides overall on six points with Laverstock & Ford completing the quartet after a 3-1 win at New Milton with Chae Sykes, Jake Rawkins and Russell Jones on target as was Tyrrell Sampson for the hosts. Andover New Street went down 1-0 at home to Petersfield with another own goal deciding the outcome – some dis-orientated defenders seemingly around today – while US Portsmouth opened their account with goals from James Franklyn and Cameron Quirke giving them a two goal victory over Totton & Eling. Downton went down for the second week running, losing 2-1 to East Cowes Vics on the Island – goals from Liam Newbold and Harrison Catania for the hosts and Sam Howe for Downton – and in the final game it finished all square at two apiece between Verwood and Newport at Potterne Park, Diop Evans and Harvey Elsom for the home side and Scott Barron and Connor Kelly for the Islanders. Thanks for all the information and for coping with the restrictive conditions under which games are having to be staged.
