A NORMAL SEASON – WITH AN ABNORMAL DAY

Season 2011/12, a seventeenth consecutive season for Whitchurch United in the League and hopes of promotion to the Premier Division. All started well with a 6-0 win at near neighbours Andover New Street in the opening game but the first two home matches ended in defeats. As usual the FA Cup entered the fixture list very early in the proceedings and though Whitchurch were drawn at home in the Extra Preliminary Round the opposition were the perennial Premier Division high fliers, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, but on the day all came right for the Jamboys. Two goals from Ashley Childs and one from Grant Powell game them a three goal lead at the break with the Wiltshire visitors only able to pull two back in the second half. The preliminary round draw saw Whitchurch at home again, and again to Wessex Premier Division opposition, as Brading crossed the Solent and journeyed up the A34. Eighty nine minutes of the game will have soon disappeared from the memory but the last minute plus stoppage time was a different matter. A limping Chris Smalley put the home side ahead before

Brading won a corner. They piled all eleven players in to the Whitchurch penalty area, the ball was cleared and Brett Denham steered it, from distance, in to the empty net. Incredibly there was still time for the islanders to pull a goal back but the home side had done enough- - just. Yet again they were favoured with a home draw in the First Qualifying Round and again it was Wessex Premier Division opposition, this time in the shape of Brockenhurst. The New Forest side were to have a poor season and goals from Ashley Childs and Alex Dockree ensured the home side a place in the Second Qualifying round for the first and only time in their history. The Second Qualifying Round draw was far from the parochial nature of the preceding rounds and paired Whitchurch at home with Gloucester City who were four levels higher than the Jamboys and at that time sitting in tenth place in the Conference North table. If one draws a line across the middle of the Country, thereby splitting it North and South, the City of Gloucester would be in the South but the FA’s geography continually puts them, and Worcester, in the North giving them trips to such as Workington and Blyth Spartans for away matches, so the one hundred and forty mile round trip to Hampshire was almost local. Whilst the tie would obviously cause the home side problems on the field, it also put the Club in to unknown territory of the pitch with the expectations of the opposition and the expected large crowd. And the club coped superbly. Car parking, catering, ease of entrance – everything was covered and a crowd reported by the “Andover Advertiser” to be in the region of four hundred and fifty (including the local Mayor and Mayoress) enjoyed the afternoon in bright sunshine. It also has to be said that the attitude of the Gloucester Officials, Players and Supporters on the day was first class and added greatly to the occasion. As was to be expected there was a difference in Standard on the pitch and Whitchurch were not really able to trouble their more illustrious opponents, but they did put up a superb showing. Keeper Tom Hindmarsh saved a penalty and the game was scoreless at the break before two goals early in the second half settled the tie in favour of the visitors. Gloucester went on to beat Truro in the next round before defeat at the hands of Chelmsford City stopped them reaching the First Round Proper. Whitchurch’s next game could not have been more different – a seven nil win over the most local of rivals, Overton, in the North Hants Cup – and the season ended with the Club in seventh place in the League Table. Chairman Gary Shaughnessy was rightly proud of the management, players and those who worked so hard behind the scenes both leading up to and on the day. But there may have been a greater significance to the day for it attracted new people to the Club behind the scenes to join the hardworking stalwarts. Some have stayed, some have moved on and been replaced, but in the ensuing years the Club seems to have found a sounder footing and gives the strong impression of being in safe hands, both on and off the field – though a little more support from the Town and it’s people would not go amiss. Good luck to all.

THE BOURNEMOUTH SENIOR CUP 2019/20

The above is due to reach its climax, weather permitting, on Tuesday February 4th when Brockenhurst and Hamworthy United will contest the Final, the third since the Competition was re-constituted in 2017/18 after a lengthy absence. This season saw an entry of eighteen Clubs – ten from the Sydenham league, seven from the Bournemouth League and one from the Hampshire Premier. One name missing was Bournemouth Poppies, the holders, who opted not to defend their Trophy. The entry of the Clubs from the Bournemouth League appears to be on the basis that a) they will be drawn away from home and b) that they will not be drawn against other. The first is understandable because of the lack of floodlights but the second does perhaps introduce form of “seeding” that is perhaps unnecessary. One suspects that if two Bournemouth League Clubs were drawn against each other space could be found on a Saturday for the game to be played. With eighteen entries two Preliminary ties were required to reach the “magic” figure of sixteen and these pitched the Sydenhams League against the Bournemouth League with the expected results. Chris Long scored a hat trick as Christchurch beat Queens Park Athletic 6-0 and there were two goals for Joe Petty as New Milton ended Verwood All Stars interest, winning 3-0. Eight Round One ties that saw the demise of all the remaining Bournemouth League Clubs. Bashley, with two goals from Harry Bunce, defeated Milford 5-0 and Ashley Pope scored a hat trick in Hamworthy United’s 4-1 defeat of Bournemouth Sports. League champions Bournemouth Manor acquitted themselves well when going down 4-2 at Sydenhams Premier Division Lymington Town and Bournemouth Electric scored three times at Verwood in reply to the home side’s six – a hat trick for Lee Vint and two goals for Tyler Rutten. The last of the lesser sides suffered the sort of scoreline that really is no good to anyone as Ringwood scored thirteen without reply against Mudeford Mens Club. Nasim Meddah scored five, Jack Darnton four and manager Richard Morse came off the bench to score twice but it must have been academic long before the end. The Hampshire Premier League’s only representative, Sway, made the ultra-short journey to Brockenhurst with the home side winning 6-1 with the goals equally shared between Ronan Moore, Jude Nwachukwu and Gerson Ramos in front of a three figure attendance. This left two ties between Sydenhams clubs and a surprise in the first as Division One Downton, with goals from Moseley and Dan Savage secured a best of three goals victory at Premier Division Christchurch. The second tie was far more clear cut as Hythe & Dibden returned home from New Milton with a 7-1 success to their name with Rhys Crookes and Mig Dark both scoring twice. In total the eight ties produced 56 goals between them. The Quarter finals saw eight clubs from the Sydenhams league involved and whether by accident or design each tie featured the Premier league and Division One in opposition. Brockenhurst won 2-1 at Verwood while Lymington needed penalties before going through at Ringwood’s expense at the Sports Ground. The scores were level at one apiece after ninety minutes with the home side winning the spot kick battle 4-3. A lot of goals at the County Ground with Ash Pope and Cameron Munn both scoring twice in Hamworthy United’s 6-3 win over Hythe & Dibden but the last tie was not without its problems. The first meeting between Downton and Bashley at Wick Lane lasted just fifteen minutes before being abandoned when thick fog enveloped the area. The second attempt was a superb game with the Premier Division side eventually coming out on top by the odd goal in seven, Tom Moseley scoring twice for Downton and Harry McGrath notching a hat trick for the visitors, but sadly, for them, Bashley were subsequently found to have fielded an illegible player – it is always difficult to keep track of cup appearances – and Downton were re-instated. Both semi-finals finished with 1-2 score lines with Brockenhurst coming from behind to win at near neighbours Lymington and Downton claiming another Premier Division scalp at Hamworthy. But that scalp was claimed on the pitch before off the field “complications” emerged in that Downton had played an ineligible player, so they in turn were removed from the Competition and Hamworthy re-instated. Always unfortunate when these things happen – Clubs have to be so careful and appearances in Cup Competitions are not always the easiest to confirm. Brockenhurst were successful in the distant past in the Competition, winning same in 1960/61 but Hamworthy United’s name has yet to appear on the Trophy.

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION FROM STEP 5 AT THE END OF THIS SEASON This is how it will work: The 14 step 5 champions will all be promoted (14), then the second and third placed teams in the North West Counties League, Northern League and Northern Counties East League will all be promoted; making a total of 20. The four best by points per game second placed teams from the other step 5 divisions will also be promoted; making a total of 24. The remaining seven second placed clubs will play off against one of the seven clubs that finished bottom of a step 4 league in a winner takes all one off game. Relegation from Step 5 at the end of the season, will see the clubs finishing at the bottom of each Step 5 Division being ranked on a points per game basis and the 12 lowest will be relegated to Step 6. This effectively means that two Step 5 teams will escape relegation. This item is on the Agenda for 6 February.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes ALTON 4-3 ARMY UNDER 23 DEVELOPMENT IT is not often the Aldershot Senior Cup features in these pages but the Competition has increased numbers this season as the Aldershot FA celebrates its 125th Anniversary and this looked an interesting fixture on what was surely the coldest evening of the season to date. Apologies that mention of the Army players in the report is only by their surnames, that was all the information available, and they made the better start with the ball in the net inside the opening three minutes but the offside flag was already raised. Liam Knight, on the home side’s left flank, provided a cross from which Scott Sanderson hit the side netting and was then stopped by a well-timed tackle from full back Rowbottom who looked a class act all evening. Both sides had trouble with the offside flag and Justin Courtnage in the Alton goal had to leave his area rapidly to thwart an Army attack before the game was halted by a lengthy conversation by the dugouts involving all three Officials and the respective Managers, the outcome of which was one Assistant going off, presumably injured, and the visiting Physio taking over the flag. An Alton free kick in a dangerous position was well held by the goalkeeper and a Knight cross headed over his own bar by a defender but generally there was a lack of action in both goalmouths and it was thirty minutes before the first goal of the evening with the home side taking the lead. Full back Matt Graham played the ball down the inside left channel and George BOWERMAN fired across the keeper and inside the far post. This caused the “London Bus Syndrome” to come in to play as having waited thirty minutes for a goal we then had three in the space of ten minutes. The second was the best of the trio with Knight bending a cross away from the goalkeeper and Scott SANDERSON’S header finding the corner of the net and the same player added the third when goalkeeper Vasper rather flapped at a cross and the striker steered the loose ball through a crowded area. There was still time for Oli Graham to see his free kick rebound back in to play off the crossbar before all sought the warmth of the dressing rooms and clubhouse for the halftime break. HT 3-0 One can only assume that the visitors were given an Army style talking to during the interval for they were a different proposition with the front pairing of Hicking and Hynd, invisible in the first half, suddenly causing problems. As an aside the Army wore red shirts and long white shorts and Hynd, far from the tallest on the pitch, had shorts that would have almost passed muster as cricket flannels. Hicking was inches wide from thirty yards and Courtnage foiled Donnachie with his legs at the end of a smart move before the pressure was rewarded with a goal after twelve minutes. A long cross from the right was headed back across goal by Higgins and the second header from HICKING found the back of the net. The striker had two further efforts blocked before a second goal just six minutes after the first. A very long clearance found DONNACHIE seemingly alone in the area and his header looped over Courtnage who should have perhaps got to the ball first. The home defence claimed offside but the ball had travelled a long way. As in the first half three goals came very quickly with a free kick from the halfway line being acrobatically volleyed past Courtnage by DONNACHIE to bring the scores level with the half still to reach its midway point. Vasper twice dropped free kicks and was awarded a free kick each time but did well to turn a fierce drive from Matt Benham over the bar before a brave decision by the referee. A good Army move ended with the ball being turned in to the net at the far post, there was no flag but the referee ruled it offside. Time was running out with the worry of extra time given that the temperature had dropped to a level that had caused any Brass Monkeys to have long since left for home, when Alton claimed the winner just two minutes from time. They won a free kick out by the left corner flag and the ball finished inside the far post, whether untouched or otherwise is uncertain but it was Matt BENHAM who took the plaudits and sent Alton in to the last eight of the competition. An interesting Evening with different opposition to normal and the right result on the night. The main Army side were apparently playing Basingstoke in a friendly a few miles down the road and won four nil. FT 4-3

Roger Allen writes AFC STONEHAM 0-0 HORNDEAN THERE are boring 0-0 draws and there are entertaining 0-0 draws. This game fell straight into the latter category. As befits two teams sitting second and third in the League at the start of the night, this was as close a game as it gets and if Horndean shaded the first half, the home side had slightly the better of the second. The first chance fell to Horndean's Fuzz Kanjanda but he blazed his shot high and wide. At the other end Nathan Clements had a shout for a penalty when he was tripped just inside the area. It would have been a soft one and his claims were waved away by the referee. Next it was Horndean's turn but Alfie Lis was both high and wide with his shot. Again up the other end and Scott Hills put over a dangerous cross but Callum Laycock was unable to get a decent contact on the header. The closest either side came to scoring in the first half occurred after 33 minutes following a pass from Horndean's Harry Jackson to Mark Smith. The striker's shot was going just wide but Stoneham keeper, Tom Parker-Trott, took no chances and palmed the ball behind. From the resulting corner Louis Martin had a clear header but he failed to hit the target. Before the interval, the only other notable chance came to Matt Bainbridge for Stoneham but his shot was blocked. HT 0-0 The first chance of the second half fell to Jackson but his header was cleared by the Stoneham defence at the second time of asking. Then Lis flashed a shot wide of the home goal. Both sides were plugging away but the central defenders on both sides excelled to limit the number of times the goalkeepers were called into action. The best chance arrived with 12 minutes to go when a clearance by Parker-Trott, the Stoneham keeper cannoned off the back of a Horndean forward to their captain Ash Howes. His shot was dipping in but Parker-Trott just got back just in time to tip the ball over the bar. This was a game that could have gone either way right up to the last minute but in the end both teams had to settle for a hard earned and well deserved point from a keenly contested game. FT 0-0 Gary Day writes SHOLING 2-1 HAMBLE CLUB A sublime finish by Dan MASON, fifty seconds after the restart, proved to be the difference between these two local rivals. Mason received a corner directed to the near post and, with his back to goal, executed a brilliant overhead kick that flashed home to put his side 2-1 ahead. But back to the beginning and Sholing, the higher ranked side, began like an express train. Green forced Monks keeper Anderson to tip over in the opening minute and the same Sholing player put another effort wide from a Nicholas cross, whilst Dan Mason’s low shot rebounded from Anderson’s legs. It looked like a matter of time and Sholing opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Nicholas and Green worked the left touchline and the ball was played into the box where Hamble defender Wilson, under pressure from Dan MASON appeared to play the ball into his own goal, although the Sholing striker was attributed with the final touch. Sholing applied further pressure with a strong run through the middle by Dan Mason but his low shot was directed at Anderson. Hamble, who hadn’t featured too much in attacking areas, got forward and as Ragguette tried to wriggle his way past Sholing defender Royl, he was upended and WATTS finished coolly from the spot to make it 1-1. There was a bit of a flashpoint on 32 minutes when Hamble’s Crook reacted angrily to a Roundell challenge in midfield and might have been fortunate to see only a yellow card. However, this proved to be an isolated incident in an otherwise clean but keenly contested match. Further chances were created at both ends up to the break but were generally off the mark. HT 1-1 That Dan Mason goal put the Boatmen’s noses in front at the start of the second half. Hamble tried to respond with Chase having successive efforts blocked. Hamble’s Crook suddenly pulled up and was substituted. Sholing could have added a third goal when Targett, with great control, moved into the box and

was tripped by Wilson but Dan Mason’s penalty (and possible hat-trick) was well tipped onto the post to his right by Anderson. When Watts played a free-kick into the box for Hamble, Lynch headed over and as Hamble through caution to the wind, Sholing had a 3v2 counter attacking move but Targett was off target. A firm Watts effort for the Monks was well blocked whilst Lauder fired over from 20-yards for Sholing. Ndlovu crossed in for the Monks but no teammate was there to take advantage and when Sholing keeper Gosney, who appeared to be carrying an injury throughout, missed a Barry Mason corner, McLean at the back post was unable to guide it home. At the death, Anderson saved well from Targett. There were many other chances created in a pulsating game full of commitment by both sides with Sholing the more threatening offensively. That wonder goal was one that certainly deserved to win the game. It is Sholing who now meet Bashley at the quarter-final stage FT 2-1

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

A number of games scheduled this midweek in various Competitions, eight in the Premier Division alone, but one of those fell foul of the rains on Monday as Solent University suffered their fourth home postponement in as many matches. The one game played on the night was in Division One with the leaders, US Portsmouth, held to a one all draw at home by Petersfield. Both goals came in the first half with Will Essai putting the visitors ahead before Tom Jeffes ensured a point for the hosts in front of a gratifying attendance of just over one hundred. The seven Premier Division matches on Tuesday were reduced to six with the postponement of the Shaftesbury Christchurch game and the result of one game left Alresford’s position at the top of the table slightly enhanced despite their being on Cup duties. AFC Stoneham and Horndean came in to their meeting second and third in the table and both on the back of winning runs so a draw was perhaps inevitable and so it proved with the scoreline blank, the first goalless draw either side have been involved in to date this season. Elsewhere Lymington climbed in to third position with a best of three goal win over Portland – regular scorers Sam House, Dom Falco and Bailey Rowe on the mark for their respective Clubs - and AFC Portchester pushed themselves back in to the top five with a 5-1 win over Tadley with five different players contributing the goals. There was defeat for one of the top sides with Hamble Club going down 5-0 at Hamworthy United with, as at Portchester, five different scorers. Bournemouth had their fixture with Bashley reversed and the New Forest side maintained their impressive home record with a 4-1 win with Harry McGrath scoring twice. In the final game Cowes Sports who, like Bournemouth, are in the relegation area, suffered a similar result at home to Fareham for whom Archie Wilcox scored twice. Just one game in Division One with Bemerton Heath gaining revenge for a recent defeat on the Waterside with a 2-1 defeat of Fawley, a result that brings them in to contact at the top end of the table with those chasing promotion. On to the various Cup Competitions and Andover New Street, the League’s last survivors in the Hampshire Senior Cup, went out at the Quarter Final stage as Southern Division Moneyfields proved too strong at Foxcotte, winning by three goals to one. In the Salisbury Hospitals Cup a lone Jamie Walters goal gave Downton victory over Wiltshire League Shrewton and a place in the last four but the tie between Laverstock & Ford and Andover Town fell victim to the weather. Lastly two games in the Aldershot Senior Cup and wins for both Alton and Alresford that take both sides in to the last eight. Alton were three up at half time against the Army Under 23 side, were pulled back to three all and then scored a very late winner whilst Alresford won 2-0 at Combined Counties side Camberley Town. Scott Sanderson scored twice for Alton and Ollie Dennett was on the mark again for Alresford. Various games in various Competitions but one common factor throughout. It was very, very COLD! Wednesday became a blank day as Baffins Milton Rovers suffered another home postponement with their League Cup tie with Brockenhurst giving way to the pitch conditions.

90 MINUTES AWAY

With our interest in the Emirates FA Cup long since passed, and with thanks to Cam Melling for the pictures, we take a glance back to when one of our clubs almost made the First Round Proper of the competition. Way back in 1990/91 the then League Champions Romsey Town battled their way through to a home fixture and found themselves just 90 minutes away from such a place. The club had already played five games before reaching, on Saturday 27 October, the 4th Qualifying Round. A Preliminary Round victory at the Bypass over Frome Town by a single Ian Beare goal was rewarded with a visit to the notoriously sloping Zembard Lane home of Chard Town.

Romsey shared eight goals with their Somerset hosts- Lee Rankin, Simon Preston, Alan Williams and an OG with the goals, before scoring three without reply in a replay back in Hampshire. Rankin, who in my humble opinion was one of the best midfielders on the local scene at the time, bagged a pair on the Wednesday with Preston again on target. The 2nd Qualifying Round brought more glory when Stroud who had previously been and then subsequently became Forest Green Rovers were outdone by a Preston goal in a 1-0 win at the Bypass. Newport away was next on the journey. The Isle of Wight side had been promoted from our league the previous season, despite being runners up to their visitors- but that counted for little as Romsey again won by the single goal, Darran Colvin the scorer on 11 minutes The trip ended when Sussex visitors Littlehampton won by the odd goal in three at the Bypass ground. Preston’s late goal on 85 minutes in reply to strikes from both the Bennetts in front of some 580 spectators. It may have escaped the readers notice but the man in the middle that afternoon was one David Elleray! Had our representatives got through a home match against the Cobblers was on the table. However it was not to be and Littlehampton tasted defeat against Northampton Town 4-0 on that afternoon, in front of a crowd in excess of 4,000- quite how many would’ve squeezed into the Bypass is hard to comprehend today. The Romsey team that afternoon was one of the best in the League at that time, older readers will recognise some of the names from Roger Sherwood’s side. In my personal opinion Steve Bailey was a good keeper, and there was also a certain Dave Fear (who had managed Hampshire Premier side Infinity until recently) at the heart of the defence. My grateful thanks to Steve Farmery for providing goal scorers in the story.

LEAGUE NEWS

With regard to the problems that we had last weekend, we have been told that The F.A. have put in a fix to reinstate the phone numbers. It appears that this fix is working but some SMS contacts were removed so they have to be manually added back. Certainly most of the contacts are within the system but there might be a few which need to be added back. Clubs were emailed with the details on Friday, but If either of your contacts did not receive a text this weekend, you should have phoned the result through to the Admin Officer’s mobile already, but clubs are reminded to send an email to the Fixtures Secretary so that he can add the contact back if necessary.

CLUB NEWS

Martin Burkhill has moved from Bemerton Heath Harlequins and joined Andover New Street. Two arrivals at Hamworthy sees goalkeeper Tom Rees added to the squad and from Portland comes attacking winger Jamie Beasley, both featured in the Hammers win over Hamble in midweek. Off the pitch, Ryan Watts is joining New Milton Town as First Team Coach. He is a recent graduate from Bournemouth University with a degree in Sports Psychology & Coaching Science. Ryan holds FA level 1 and 2 coaching badges, and he is currently studying for his UEFA B badge. United Services Portsmouth are looking for a new Kit Manager, please contact the club directly if you are interested in such a position.

A new era is about to happen at Follands Park. New landlords have taken over from GE Hamble. The Hamble site Hamble Aerostructures is now part of the Spanish Aernnova Group. We wish them well with their forthcoming meetings over plans for investing in their infrastructure in the coming days. There’s a new face at Foxcotte Park where Mario Nurse has signed for Andover New Street, and the return of Ashley Booker to New Milton Town is also noted. On a bitter evening at AFC Stoneham they were presented with their

December Club of the Month award for the Premier Division, pictured below are, Greg Dickson, Geoff Smith, Alex Welch and Dennis Challis.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes BOURNEMOUTH 3-3 COWES SPORTS NICE bright afternoon at Victoria Park, but a biting cold wind from the west did little to enhance the spectacle. It had been a long time since I was last here and to be honest wasn’t expecting such an open contest where league points were at a premium. With the wind behind them Bournemouth enjoyed the better of the first half and came close to opening their account in the 7th minute when Jake Harvey played a long ball into the right channel that Edgar Zanin was able to cross but Jack Voisey’s header was somehow clawed to safety off the line by the Yachtsmen keeper, Ed Hatt. It was a similar story three minutes later when Conor Jevon robbed Aidan Bryan only for the ball to

run away from the striker and see Hatt happy to collect the loose ends. However, stalemate didn’t last long, a Zanin cross was poked home by VOISEY (pictured here in red courtesy of Roger Allen) on 17 minutes. Poppies extended their lead three minutes later when Voisey turned provider with JEVON finding time to bring it down and fire home from around ten yards out. Cowes almost pulled one back on

29 minutes when Ji Nash’s effort from 12 yards didn’t have the power to worry Sam Jones in the goal, but within 60 seconds did find the net from close range sliding the ball through the keeper’s legs . The two goal cushion was almost immediately restored though. Callum Farrugia whipped the ball in from the right and VOISEY rose to head it home from close range. Cowes were probably unlucky not to get another with around six minutes of the half left when a Jared Wetherick shot was tipped to safety by Jones and Ashley Brett’s header from the resulting corner crashed to safety off the crossbar. However a handball decision with a minute of the half left was converted by Ewan CRANWELL to reduce the arrears. HT 3-2 Although there weren’t many at the game today, several had yet to resume their places when the visitors drew level. BRETT rose unmarked from a Finlay Phillips cross to make it three each barely two minutes into the second half. Chances were few and far after that, which was quite a surprise considering the number of attempts from the first hour of the contest. Both defences dealt well with what chances there were and apart from a great Jones save from Jamie Wykes neither keeper was that troubled for the rest of the game. Cowes perhaps came closest to grabbing all the points when with a few minutes left a weak clearance from Jones fell to Wetherick who instead of shooting tried to play in his fellow striker and the chance was gone. FT 3-3 Gary Day writes NEWPORT IOW 1-1 RINGWOOD TOWN With my beloved Test Park once again ruled unplayable there was a quandary regarding where to go! Being based in Southampton, it was a difficult day to travel with the roads and rail both out of action. But there was still another direction to go and it was an Island trip for me! Newport, tenants at the East Cowes Vics ground, would be looking for three points to keep in touch with the top places. Town had a couple of players pull out in the morning of the game. The pitch was a sticky one but

undoubtedly in a playable condition and a stiff wind was blowing across the ground, factors that were not conducive to good passing football. Both sides had an early threat on their opponents’ goal. Browne for Port did well to get past a defender but his finish was mis-hit and well wide. Port’s Kelly went over in the box from a challenge by Town’s young keeper Harvey but despite screams for a penalty the referee correctly adjudged there to be no contact. Kelly had a good chance, being left clear in the middle, but failed to get a decent shot in and Harvey moved across to his left to palm the ball away near to the post. Other than those opportunities neither side took a grip on proceedings but, out of nothing, Town skipper OSMAN, just in the Newport half and a full 45 yards from goal, tried an audacious effort that travelled about a foot off the ground all the way into the corner of the goal with a startled Port keeper Streeter rooted to his position. An excellent effort that the game needed. That goal came ten minutes before the break and Port countered with Pearce ghosting behind a defender to receive a Yates cross but his header was off the mark. A wayward Reynolds effort from 25 yards was also well off target which, in a way, summed up the Port finishing in what was a disappointing half from their viewpoint. HT 0-1 Streeter stumbled from a further long-range Town effort but was able to recover to keep the ball out early in the second half. Town’s Manley tried a shot that went wide and Meddah worked a good position and tried to place his effort but Streeter made a good save. Craig fired straight at Harvey as Port tried to level. They achieved that on 65 minutes when Kelly’s free kick went into the box and the ball was allowed to bounce enabling BROWNE to turn and fire home. Craig fizzed the ball into the box from the right but it went across goal and out of play, whilst sub Taylor found Browne who was immediately closed and tackled by Town defender Helyar. It was getting late now and Taylor’s free kick was launched into the Town box but Reynolds’ effort was another from Port that went well off the mark. A second goal almost materialised for Browne on 86 minutes when his left-wing cross from near to the dead ball line came off the inside of the far post and into the arms of a grateful Harvey. FT 1-1 It was a scrappy game on a demanding energy sapping surface and, considering the circumstances (with Port misfiring and Town hardworking) a draw was a fair result on the day. So, I got my ‘Saturday footy fix’ with no travel problems! As I am heading home with the slow ferry gliding smoothly across Southampton Water with the glint of the setting sun reflecting on the waves I can confidently say - you can take the road and rail out of Southampton but, given favourable weather, the passage to the Island cannot be stopped! Land ahoy, shipmates! John Gorman writes WHITCHURCH UNITED 0-3 HYTHE & DIBDEN On a bright sunny afternoon that turned markedly colder as the sun fell, Hythe & Dibden maintained their promotion push and second place in the table with an ultimately comfortable win over their North Hampshire hosts. The home side have lost their way of late after a promising start to the campaign and, hard as they battled, they lacked the threat in front of goal to trouble the visitors. The game was slow to get into its stride and it was the home side who posed the first threat when a long run and cross from Declan Shuttleworth found George Bishop some twelve yards from goal but the shot was delayed and turned behind for a corner. Whitchurch continued to press with two more corners in quick succession but failed to get any real attempt on goal. Owen Fee switched from the left flank to the right for Hythe and forced his way through one challenge before going down under a second one. Appeals for a penalty were optimistic but the caution for diving bordered on the ridiculous. Another run and cross from Shuttleworth found no support in the area before Hythe took the lead after twenty right minutes and an element of confusion. The game was stopped after a player was struck in the face by the ball and the referee re-started play with what appeared to be a dropped ball on the touchline. The confusion came when the ball was dropped between two players who simply stood and looked

at each other and the referee before the ball was eventually toed in the direction of the Whitchurch goal where FEE was bought down on the corner of the penalty area, got up and lifted the free kick over the wall and high in to the roof of the net. Josh Cotton in the Hythe goal dropped a cross with no opposing player within three yards of him and, as is too often the case, was awarded a free kick before Hythe added a second goal five minutes after their first. Whitchurch failed to clear a corner and Cain PRENTICE fastened on to the loose ball to score from just inside the area. Ryan Long was unlucky with a lob that beat the advancing Cotton and landed on the roof of the net before Shuttleworth’s header grazed the outside of the post before the half ended with another harsh caution, this time for the home side’s Corey Cherrett. The forward, with a defender in close attendance, chased a ball in to the area, the goalkeeper came out, there was a three man collision, the ball went past the post and Cherrett was booked. One hopes Cotton’s minor tantrum did not sway the referee. HT 0-2 Hythe bolstered their defence with the introduction of Ross Bottomley at the break and were quickly on the front foot with a Fee shot well saved by Konrad Szymaniak in the home goal in what was to be Fee’s last contribution to the proceedings as he gave way to Mig Dark. Within ten minutes Hythe added a third goal and it was to all effect game over. Filippos TERZIDIS picked the ball up on the edge of the area, the defence stood off and the shot was curled high in to the corner of the net. Cotton, who numbers Whitchurch among his former Clubs, left his area to deny Shuttleworth before Szymaniak saved well from Zac Willis after Bengyela Ngwa provided the opening, before tipping a fierce drive from Dark over the crossbar. Cotton matched that in saving a spectacular volley from Charlie Plumbley before Dark, who had been a constant threat since coming on, was denied by the goalkeeper’s legs after breaking clear and the game drifted to a close, happily without any excessive stoppage time. Three valuable and deserved points for Hythe while Whitchurch have another home game on Wednesday to get back on track. FT 0-3

WEEK TWENTY SEVEN ROUND UP

till not a complete programme of matches to cover but only three postponements which is perhaps better than expected. Two of the postponements came in the Premier Division with the games between Hamble Club and

Horndean and Solent University and Bashley falling by the wayside, Solent’s fifth postponement in a row as problems with their pitch continue. At the top of the table Alresford’s lead was cut to two points as Fareham completed the double over them, adding a 1-0 win at Arlebury to their home win earlier in the season – Josh Benfield the scorer. AFC Stoneham, in second place, scored twice late in the game to defeat Hamworthy United 3-1 with Callum Laycock claiming two and Lymington remain in third spot after beating near neighbours Brockenhurst 3-0, their sixth win in a row. Sam House (2) and Dom Falco scored the goals in front of the highest attendance (171) of the day. A hat trick from Jason Parish helped AFC Portchester to come from behind for a best of five goal win over Baffins Milton Rovers and fourth place in the table, while Horndean and Hamble Club remain in the top six despite having the day off. Goals from Matt Neale and Josh Kirkham gave Christchurch victory at Portland, the home side’s fifth loss in their last six matches, while Shaftesbury ended a four match losing run with a two all draw at home to Fleet Town – River Smith and Aaron Laney for the home side and Jake Hammond and Aaron Redford for the visitors. The crunch match at the bottom of the table between Bournemouth and Cowes Sports ended in a three all draw with Jack Voisey notching two for the Poppies and Ji Nash among the Cowes scorers. That point took Bournemouth above Solent on goal difference but no joy for bottom Club Amesbury Town as they went down 4-0 at home to Tadley Calleva for whom Nick Bignall scored three in their best away result of the season to date. In Division One the top three all won whilst Andover New Street were left kicking their heels following the postponement of their match at Totton & Eling. Leaders US Portsmouth were given a fright at Burnaby Road by East Cowes Vics before a lone James Franklyn goal in the second half gave them the three points while Downton and Hythe & Dibden found life a little easier. The Wiltshire side defeated Fawley 3-0 at Wick Lane, the visitors sixth loss in their last seven matches, with Tom Moseley scoring twice and there was a similar scoreline at Whitchurch where the home side’s current poor run continued as goals from Owen Fee, Cain Prentice and Filippos Terzidis gave the Waterside Club the points. Alton lost ground after a 2-2 draw at bottom side Follands – a good point for the Planemakers – but Bemerton Heath could still have a part to play in the promotion race and edged a little closer with a 2-1 win at Petersfield, both goals coming from Justin Bennett. Newport were held to a draw on the Island by Ringwood Town who took the lead through a Ryan Osman goal that one learned watcher described as a certainty for Goal of the Day – a thirty five yard screamer that flew past Gary Streeter – with Jordan Browne salvaging a point for the home side. Laverstock & Ford made it four wins out of five with a 4-2 defeat of New Milton – Graham Mankin among the scorers – and lastly Verwood Town won at home for the second week running with Lee Vint’s goal the difference against Andover Town. At the end of the day Alresford’s lead at the top of the Premier Division has been cut to two points with AFC Stoneham and Lymington completing the top three whilst in Division One US Portsmouth lead Downton and Hythe by a point with six points covering the top six Clubs. Briefly back to last Thursday when Sholing defeated Hamble Club 2-1 in the Southampton Senior Cup with Dan Mason, a regular name on these pages last season, scoring both goals for the winners. Talking of the Boatmen we hear that Byron Mason has now made 600 appearances for the club, quite an achievement in itself. Elsewhere, there were wins for former members Poole Town, Wimborne Town, Sholing and Moneyfields. The season moves on, February is with us and still very much to play for and no doubt more twists and turns to come.
