SWORD AND SHIELD Instructional Strategies Writing as a Tool to Foster Learning Why do your students write? Students often complete worksheets or construct essays but besides completing assignments, why do they write? In schools today, we mustn’t only use writing as a way to get students to communicate what they know, we must also demonstrate and encourage the use of writing as a tool to construct meaning and spark inquiry. I recently witnessed a lesson that did just that. Election Guidelines for Staff Irving ISD is scheduled to have a trustee election on May 6, 2017. As District employees, there are several important guidelines to remember as the elections ap-proach. All teachers and school district staff should be aware of and adhere to Policy EMB (Local).

Go Red Fridays! Just a friendly reminder that we have three more Go Red Fridays to go! Please wear red or your Go Red t-shirt every Friday during the month of February to show your support for heart health and the good work of the American Heart Association. Also, don’t forget to get your blood pressure checked this month.

Nimitz Farmers Market The Ag Science Department is excited to announce its first Nimitz Farmers Market on April 29th from 8am-1pm. The student run enterprises, Nimitz Pet Care, Nimitz Floral Design, Nimitz Horticulture and Nimitz Culinary, will be offering their services. Additionally, they are inviting other school enterprises and outside vendors from the community to rent a booth at their Farmers Market. The department would like to first extend the opportunity to the Nimitz family. Are there any faculty and staff members that have a small business, hobby, or craft and would like to sell at the market such as Scentsy, Avon, Mary Kay, or make delicious homemade tamales or pies? The department would love for the business to be a part.

Below is the link for more information about the market and to reserve a booth. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe2rgJk3-CzPu9oxIeDECKH6gFuwTNrfMrUhUUqjjTO04kJsA/viewform

Pennies for Patients Campaign Student Council will begin their annual Pennies for Patients Campaign benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of North Texas. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and adolescents less than 21 years old. In 2015, about 4,103 chil-dren and adolescents less than 20 years old are expected to be diagnosed with leu-kemia throughout the US. The most common type of leukemia in children and ado-lescents younger than 20 years is acute lymphoblastic leukemia or A-L-L. A-L-L is also the most common cancer in children 1 to 7 years old. The Campaign ends Feb-ruary 24. The monies Nimitz collects will go directly to provide help and support to families here in North Texas and to fund the ground breaking research currently fund-ed through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The fundraiser is also a competi-tion between 4th period classrooms. If classroom contributes the most money to the campaign your entire class will enjoy a lunch at the Olive Garden and a tour of the restaurant!! Ask your fourth period teacher to sign up today by e-mailing Mr. Manale or notifying one of the Student Council Officers.

Library of Congress 2017 Summer Teacher Institutes –Teaching with

Primary Sources The Library of Congress is now accepting applications for its week-long summer

institutes for K-12 educators. Held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., this professional development opportunity provides educators of all disciplines with resources and strategies to effectively integrate primary sources into K-12 classroom teaching. Each session will focus on pedagogy, with an emphasis on supporting student engagement, critical thinking, and construction of knowledge.

While practicing these teaching strategies, attendees will explore some of the

millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available in the Library’s

collections. They will also conduct research to identify primary sources and develop an activity related to their classroom content.

Five week-long sessions will be offered this summer:

General Focus – open to K-12 educators across all content areas: June 19-23,

June 26-30 and July 10-14.

Science, Technology, and Engineering Focus –

recommended for K-12 educators who teach science, technology, or engineering, or collaborate with those who do: July 17-21

WWI Focus – recommended for K-12 educators who teach some aspect of WWI as part of their curriculum, or collaborate with those who do: July 31-August 4

The institute and course materials are provided at no cost. Participants will be

responsible for transportation to and from Washington, D.C., and any required

overnight accommodations.

Applications are due March 17 and require a letter of recommendation. Learn more and apply at http://www.loc.gov/teachers/professionaldevelopment/teacherinstitute/?rssloc=eanft

NURSE’S HEALTH TIPS

February is TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

More than 1 in 10 teens who have been on a date have also been physically abuse by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the last year. One of the most important things you can do is keep the lines communication open to your kids. There is a lot you can do as a parent to prevent teen dating violence and abuse.

TAKE STEPS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE…

Be a role model - treat your kids and others with respect.

Start talking to your kids about healthy relationships early—before they start dating. If you are worried about your teen, notify their teachers, counselors, administrators, or nurse.

Together, we can keep your loved ones safe and healthy.
