OUR PRIORITIES

FOR ACTION Local Liberal Democrats have a

programme for action in the city

council which includes:

Improve existing highways, rather than

building new roads, giving priority to

pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Work alongside bus operators to

provide a better bus service, extending the

regularity of buses beyond 7pm.

Provide free bus travel for

Peterborough pensioners, irrespective of

the time they wish to travel.

Introduce an all year round Park and

Ride scheme, initially at weekends.

Scrap the gas guzzling mayor’s car.

Provide a fast track system for

planning applications that show energy

efficiency measures and promote use of

renewable energy.

Offer incentives for people to separate

their waste to make recycling easier, such

as vouchers for use in local businesses.

Look for ways of recycling more

commercial waste and work with local

businesses and retailers to reduce the

amount of waste being generated.

Scrap plans for a waste incinerator

and, instead, look at more environmentally

friendly options including more effort on

waste reduction and recycling.

Reduce frequency of grass cutting on

council land, in order to deliver savings

and increase bio diversity.

Develop a ten year plan for education

in our city, via consultation with schools,

parents and interested groups.

Ensure that there are places for local

children by consistently operating at a

number 5% above the anticipated levels.

Open up school facilities to the public.

Reward and encourage greater

parental involvement in running schools.

Oppose the sale of school playing

fields, to help ensure the health and

activity of young people in Peterborough!

Increase opening hours at community

libraries around the city.

Work with the courts and other parts of

the justice system to establish and enforce

Acceptable Behaviour Contracts with

persistent young offenders and provide

effective support for parents who have

problems controlling their children.

Take real action under the licensing

laws, “three strikes and you’re out” for

premises caught selling alcohol to under-

age people.

.

FOUNTAINS WITHOUT WATER! Many local people questioned the millions of pounds spent by the city council on ‘improving’ Cathedral Square. They were particularly concerned about the fountains, which have not only cost a fortune to install but also cost £30,000 every year to maintain.

The fountains are switched off for most of the winter and now residents have been told that due to the hosepipe ban they will be switched off all through the summer too.

There are no trees or greenery in the square so all we will have for at least the next year is a vast expanse of concrete.

Do you think this is worth the £12 million the Tory council spent on it? Let us have your views.

The Liberal Democrats plan to save up to £50,000 a year by

scrapping free car parking passes for city councillors and save

another £100,000 over four years by cutting the number of cabinet

positions - no more jobs for the boys!

Every Liberal Democrat controlled council in England has frozen

its Council Tax this year. In Peterborough, our Tory-run council

has put it up by nearly three per cent, meaning you pay more for

their wasteful spending.
