LITTLE SIGN OF TRAFFIC CONTROL FROM COUNCIL New FOCUS Editor and local resident, Julia Davidson says she is “amazed”
that, despite the technology being available, the Tory-controlled city council
does not make use of data relating to the vehicle-activated signs located
along Gunthorpe Road.
The signs are capable of producing
statistics showing how often they are
activated, which would give a clear
indication of the scale of the speeding
problem in the road, but the council chooses
not to know! Commenting, Julia said: “I’ve been using the
Gunthorpe Road for nearly 20 years and I have
seen the level of traffic increase with every year
that passes.
“There have been fatalities along this stretch
of road, police have undertaken speed surveys
showing problems and local Liberal Democrat
councillor Darren Fower has raised the matter at
council meetings, while the Tory councillors for
this area have sat on their hands!
“Given that there are two schools on this stretch of road, a shop, a pub, several
access roads leading onto it and the fact that thousands of cars use it week in week
out, not to mention the expected increase in car numbers of some 27 per cent over
the next few years, I’m amazed that all the Tory council has done so far is provide
two sets of flashing lights!”
Julia has now signed up to support the Gunthorpe Road Safety Campaign led by
Darren and is urging other residents to do the same!
You can join online by visiting http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/gunthorperoad
or simply searching for “Gunthorpe Road Campaign”.
Parking restrictions Also in Gunthorpe Road, local Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower has
been contacted by several residents about the possibility of the council putting
double yellow lines outside Norwood School and the shop/hairdressers.
Do you think it is a good idea? Get in touch and let us know!
Fulbridge Road Meanwhile, people living in other streets in the area have also been raising
concerns about traffic. For example, one resident in Fulbridge Road has been in
touch with Julia to ask why Fulbridge Road does not have even the level of speed
control that is provided in Gunthorpe Road.
“It is a very good question,” said Julia. Along with Lib Dem ward councillor
Darren Fower, she is now taking the matter up with the city council.
NEW LIGHTS Residents in Ambleside Gardens
have welcomed their newly installed
street lights, telling Liberal
Democrat ward councillor Darren
Fower that they are providing much
more light and less light pollution! According, to Darren the lights are
also far more energy efficient and are
expected to last longer, which will
hopefully mean fewer failing lights and
therefore less need for replacement
work by the council’s contractors.
If you do ever see a street light which is not working please contact the city council on 01733 453 523. It should be fixed within ten working days – if it is not, please let us know!

LOCAL ISSUES
AND ACTION Local Lib Dem councillor
Darren Fower is keen to hear
people’s views on the idea of re-
installing some goal posts in the
recreational area located
between Warwick Road
(Walton) and Church Street
(Werrington).
Darren said: “Several years
ago the city council removed the
goal posts. Why? I have no
idea!
“Given that football is our
national sport and the fact that
the European Championships
take place this year, it’s a real
shame that there is no scope in
this well located recreational
area, for young people….or
whoever for that matter….. to
show off their ball skills.”
What do you think? Please let
us know.
Residents of Dukesmead
have previously told members of
the FOCUS Team that they feel
neglected by the city council
and previous councillors for the
area, because Dukesmead is
separated from the rest of the
ward by Werrington Parkway.
As a result of this, local
Liberal Democrat ward
councillor Darren Fower has
regularly made visits to the site
and continues to personally
deliver the regular FOCUS
newsletter to each and every
Dukesmead household.
If you live in Dukesmead or
have any comments to make,
please do get in touch with
Darren or FOCUS Editor Julia
Davidson. We love to hear from
all local residents!

WELL DONE TO WERRINGTON PUB More than £3,000 was raised for a good cause Peterborough after the Dragon
pub in Hodgson Avenue held a sponsored fire walk. In all, an impressive £3,065 was raised for the Lee Groome Fund to help support its
work for people in need in Peterborough.
A cheque was recently presented to Chris Groome, who runs the charity in memory of
his son Lee, who died at the age of 24 in 2000 from a rare form of cancer.
We would like to say “Well done” to all those involved – particularly to Andy
Simmonds, who is one of the landlords at The Dragon and at The Ploughman.

REC IMPROVEMENT? At the latest council Neighbourhood
Committee meeting for this area, the
issue of maintaining and improving
Cuckoos Hollow was raised. Local Liberal Democrat councillor
Darren Fower highlighted the need for
similar attention to be given to the John
Clare ‘rec’ alongside Hallfields Lane.
He said: “The John Clare recreational
area is located between the electoral wards
of Walton, Paston and South Werrington,
so if we can get support from the city
council, there should be no reason why we
cannot look to introduce schemes and
ideas that benefit this well-used
recreational area for the benefit of
thousands of residents living in and around
the area.”
Would you be interested in helping to
improve this part of the local area? If so
please get in touch with Darren or FOCUS
Editor Julia Davidson.
FOOTPATH BATTLE Darren Fower, the Lib Dem
councillor for South Werrington and
North Gunthorpe, has been calling on
the Tory-controlled city council to
repair the footpaths on Lincoln Road. At the end of last year, the council
finally took some action – but not much!
It resurfaced just the west side of the
footpath, south of the Cock Inn!
Bemused, Darren arranged a site visit
with an officer from the Town Hall, who
said that he did not feel that the east side
footpath was in need of attention, despite
the fact that residents living along this
stretch had complained about the path!
Subsequently, Darren asked at a full
council meeting for the relevant Tory
cabinet member to come and see for
himself. He agreed to do so but Darren
has not heard anything from him since,
despite further reassurances that he is
happy to visit the site with Darren.
Whatdo you think? Whats the
footpath like in your road? Please
let us know!
Got an issue for Darren? If you want to raise any issue with local Lib Dem councillor Darren Fower, don’t
forget that he holds two ‘surgeries’ every month – one on the first Friday of each month between 6-7 pm at the Werrington Village Centre, Church Street and one on
the third Friday of the month between 6-7 pm at Brookside Methodist Church, Gunthorpe Road. Meetings are in private. No appointment needed. Just turn up!
