Philosophy of Youth SportsThe philosophy of YMCA Youth Super Sports embodies the mission of the YMCA and provides the framework and foundation on which YMCAs can build their sports programs. The mission of the Grand Island YMCA: To put Chris tian principles into practice through programs the build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Philosophy of YMCA Super Sports can be broken down into Seven Pillars. They are as follows:

Seven Pillars of YMCA Youth Sports

Everyone swims. We do not use tryouts to select the best players, nor do we cut kids from YMCA Youth Super Sports Teams. Everyone who registers is assigned to a training group.

Safetyfirst.Althoughsomechildrenmaygethurtplayingsports,wedoallwecantopreventinjuries. The YMCA makes sure all equipment and facilities are safe.

Fair play. Fair play is about more than playing by the rules. It’s about you and your swimmers showing respect for all who are involved in YMCA Youth Super Sports. It’s about you being a role model of good sportsmanship and guiding your swimmers to do the same. Remember,we’re interested in developing children’s character through sport.

Positive competition. We believe competition is a positive process when the pursuit of victory is kept in the right perspective. The “right perspective” means adults make decisions that put the best interests of the children above winning the contest. Learning to compete is important for children, and learning to cooperate in a competitive world is an essential lesson of life. These are the lessons we want to teach through YMCA Youth Super Sports.

Family involvement. YMCA Youth Super Sports encourages parents to be involved appropriately along with their child’s participation in our sport programs. In addition to parents being helpful asvolunteercoaches, officialsandtimekeepers, weencouragethemtobeatpracticesandgames to support their child’s participation.

Sport for all. YMCA Youth Super Sports is an inclusive sport program. That means children who differ in various characteristics are to be included rather than excluded from participation. We offer programs to all children regardless of race, gender, religion, or ability.

Sport for fun. Sport is naturally fun for most children. They love the challenge of mastering the skills of the sport, of playing with their friends , and of competing with their peers. Sometimes when adults become involved in children’s sport, they over-organize and dominate the activity to the point of spoiling children’s enjoyment of the sport. If we take the fun out of sport, we are in danger of our children taking themselves out of sport.

Remember, these sports are for the kids; let them have fun.

A Brief History of the TeamThe Grand Island YMCA competitive swimming program started in 1962 when the YMCA added

In 1973, our program was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as a chartermember.Alsoin1973,whengirlswereallowedtocompeteforthefirsttimeinNebraskahigh school swimming, two inaugural champions came from Grand Island and were members of our program. In 2004, Scott Usher, a long time member of our program, represented the United States OlympicSwimTeamattheAthensOlympicsandcompetedinthe200meterbreaststrokefinishingseventh. In 2007, Betty Jakob, who coached our program for over 20 years, was inducted into the Midwestern Swimming Hall of Fame.

Most of all we are proud of the positive impact our program has had on thousands of children in our community. Many have gone on to do great things in the sport of competitive swimming, but all have learned valuable lessons that last a lifetime.

About the TeamOurofficialnameis“TheGrandIslandYMCAQuicksilverSwimTeam.”Ourteamcodeis“HG”,

which (if you remember your chemistry) is the periodic chart’s symbol for mercury and quicksilver is the laymen’s term for mercury. Mercury may not be the fastest element in water but it does attract gold.

Our program is a year-round YMCA program that is also registered with USA Swimming Inc., which is the national governing body (NGB) for the sport of swimming in the United States. Our swimmers compete in both closed YMCA inter-association meets and sanctioned USA Swimming Inc. meets. Under USA Swimming‘s governance, the United States is divided into Local Swimming Committees (LSC’s). Our LSC is called Midwestern Swimming and encompasses Nebraska, and western Iowa.

As members of USA Swimming our registered athletes can compete in any open competition sanctioned by USA Swimming anywhere in the United States and in any open international competition sanctioned by FNA - the international governing body of competitive swimming . Due to our association with the YMCA and USA swimming leagues, we have several end-of-the-season championships. During the Short Course (SC) season we have the YMCA State Championships, and Midwestern Swimming’s Championship. To participate in the YMCA State Championships the swimmers must participate in 3 YMCA swim meets during the current SC season. For the Midwestern Swimming Championship, swimmers must achieve qualifying times. The YMCA also has National Championships in both the Short Course and Long Course (summer) season with qualifying standards. USA Swimming also has National Championship meets for both Junior and Senior levels with qualifying standards. USA swimming has regional championship meets (all-stars winter and zones summer for age group swimmers) plus sectionals for both seasons for 13 and older. USA swimming also conducts the Olympic trials.

Swim MeetsTo be eligible to represent the Grand Island YMCA Quicksilver Swim Team at a swim meet a

swimmer must be a member in good standing with the YMCA and current on all program fees. We do not allow or endorse the idea of swimmers only swimming swim meets and not practicing with the team.

Meets give the swimmer an opportunity to reach their personal goals and realizing their potential. This process of setting goals and attaining them are what makes the sport a challenge. Swim meets help to keep swimming interesting and enthusiasm levels high. In addition, meets are a great social environment for swimmers and their parents!

Some meets are designed to accommodate a certain level of swimmer . USA Swimming publishes a set of motivational time standards for each USA Swimming age group and sometimes meets are restricted to certain swimmers that have achieved a certain motivational time standard. The “C” time standard is usually where the beginner swimmer starts. As a swimmer improves, they will progress to B, BB, A, AA, AAA, AAAA time standards. A copy of these time standards is included in your handbook.

How does a Swim Meet work?Girls compete against girls, boys against boys. Everyone swims in their own age bracket, ex: 8

and under, 9-10 or 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14 and so on. Events are numbered and alternate startingwithgirl’seventsfirstandgothroughallagebracketsbeforeweswimadifferentevent.

There are four competitive strokes. Freestyle, which can be anything, but generally front crawl is swum; Backstroke, any type of stroke and kick on your back, but we generally see back crawl ; BreaststrokeandButterfly.Allstrokeshavesetrulesforstarts,performanceofstroke,turnsandfinishes.Whenaswimmerhasaninfractionofoneoftheserules,she/heisdisqualifiedfromtheevent and will receive no placement . There is the Individual Medley (I.M.), which consists of all four strokes. There are also two relay events, the Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay. All relays have four swimmers. In the Medley Relay, each of the four swimmers swims one of the four strokes (back,breast,butterfly,andfreestyle).Inrelays,ifoneswimmerhasaninfractionoftherulesforthatrelay,theentirerelaywillbedisqualified.

Swim Meet Entry ProcedureYou can declare your intention to swim via the team website (www.quicksilverswimming.com). If

you do not have access to the website please notify the head coach in writing, either by hard copy or via e-mail, the dates and sessions your swimmer will swim. This should be done by the due date listed on the meet information. Late entries may not be accepted (fees are usually doubled). To ensure our program’s vision and team philosophy, the coach will enter the swimmers in the events they need to be in, although you may request certain events.

Payments for MW meets must be made before the due date listed on the meet information. An email will be sent to each member which includes the amount owed for each meet. Please submit payment before the start date of the meet to the team treasurer listed on the email. You may either bring the payment to the Head Coach or mail to the treasurers address listed on the email. If needed a hard copy can be provided. It is up to the family to notify the treasurer of any request for a hard copy of bill.

Parents Pledge and Code of EthicsThe following “Code of Ethics” is offered as a guide to insure the promotion of good

sportsmanship and conduct among the PARENTS of the Nebraska YMCA competitive community. The YMCA is concerned with the development of the spirit, mind and body. Within the

philosophy of “Keeping a Good Kid Good” we believe competitive athletics can have a tremendous influenceonhelpingyoungsterswiththedifficultdecisionsinlifeandwithmaintainingapositivedirectionawayfromlife’snegativeinfluences.

As a parent I promise:•I pledge to be on time or early when dropping off my child for a practice or a meet. This shows

respect for the coaches, who has other time commitments, and it tells my child that he or she is my top priority.

•Conductyourselfinamannertoearntherespectandconfidenceoftheathletes,coaches,officials,andYMCAprofessionalstaff.

•I understand that the top three reasons kids play sports are to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills. I understand that the sport is for the kids, and that I will encourage my child to have fun and keep sport in its proper perspective.

•I will “Honor the Sport”. I understand the importance of setting a good example of sportsmanship tomychild.Iunderstandthatofficials,coachesandteammatesmakemistakes.Iftherefereemakes a “questionable” call, I will continue to respect the individual and be silent!

•Be a goodwill ambassador between our team and the public.•I will maintain high integrity and respect for the rights and efforts of team coaches.•I understand that coaching decisions are for the best interest of the program and athletes and

should therefore be supported.•I understand that meets can be exciting times for my child who is trying to deal with the fast-

paced action of the meet, respond to opponents, referees, teammates and listen to coaches. I will not add confusion by yelling out instructions. During practice/meets, I will limit my comments to encouraging my child and other teammates.

•I will maintain a balanced perspective on the purpose and values YMCA competition is trying to promote, not who has the best win/loss record or a “win at any cost attitude.”

•Iwillredefinewhatitistobea“Winner”inmyconversationswithmychild.AWinnerissomeonewho makes maximum effort, continues to learn and improve, and does not let mistakes, or fear of making mistakes stop them.

Tools for ParentsThe following ideas may be helpful for being a supportive YMCA Quicksilver Parent.

Conversations before the practices and meetsTell your child you love him/her regardless of the outcome. Tell him or her “Go for it, give it your best shot and have fun”

During the meetUnderstand that kids are over-stimulated during meets. The coach may be giving instructions, opponents and teammates are talking, and the crowd is cheering. Do not yell instructions to your child during practice/meet because it only adds to the confusion. Sometimes the best thing you can do as a parent is to be quiet.Cheer and acknowledge good efforts by all teams.

After the meetThanktheofficialsfordoingadifficultjob.Thankthecoachesfortheirefforts.Ifyourchildisdisqualifiedordoesnotswimasplanned,recognize that it is not a good time to question a coach.Thank your opponents for a good meet.Congratulate your child and his or her teammates for their efforts.Compliment teammates on good efforts they made in the practice/meet.

During the car ride homePoint out good efforts your child made during the practice/meet. Avoid criticizing or correcting mistakes.Ask open-ended questions about how the practice/meet went. Here are examples of open-ended questions that might apply:

Did you have fun?Did you give it your best effort? What did you learn from the practice/meet?What was the best experience you had today and how did it feel? Did you bounce back from your mistakes?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How often are swimmers expected to be at practice?A. Practice makes improvement. We encourage swimmers to attend as many practices as possible.

Each training group has a certain commitment level for the number of practices to attend. These levelsreflectwhatwebelievetobetheminimalnumberofpracticestoobtainthemostbenefitfromthattraininggroup.Morethanthatisbetter, lessoftenanditwillbedifficulttoshowstroke and conditioning improvement.

Q. Doesmychildneedalltheextrasthattheotherswimmershave(i.e.fins,goggles,swimcaps)?A. Weencourageallswimmerstoowntheirownpairoftrainingfins.Gogglesandcapsarenot

mandatory, but they do enhance the swimmer’s experience.

Q. Istherefinancialassistanceavailable?A. There is help available through the YMCA and through Midwestern Swimming. Please contact

the coach or the YMCA’s Membership Director.

Q. Who determines what lane my swimmer swims in?A. The coaches determine what lane swimmers swim in. This insures a safer training environment

and may change based on what the item is the coach has the swimmers working on. Factors involved include the age, ability, endurance level, and emotional maturity.

Q. How many swim meets is my child suppose to attend?A. Attending swim meets is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory. Swim meets are a very

important part of the program and not attending will limit your swimmer’s experience. Swimmers and parents should review the team’s meet schedule and plan accordingly. If you are not sure what meets you are eligible to attend, ask the coach.

Q. What do we need to bring to a swim meet?A. Ideally, each swimmer should have: two towels (one during the meet and another for after the

meet when they shower); two sets of goggles just in case one set breaks; two swim caps if they wear swim caps; sweats that are easy to get on and off between events (parents may be hot in a pool area, but swimmers chill easily); healthy snacks like fruit, fruit drinks, crackers (please be considerate of the facility’s policy on having food on the pool deck); shampoo, conditioner, and brush; and of course a swim suit (ideally this is different than their practice suit and is only used for competitions).

Q. What is “marking my swimmer for a meet”?A. We encourage new or young swimmers to have someone write their events, heat and lane on

their arm or leg with a Sharpie, so they have a reference of what and when they are swimming at a swim meet. This saves time and stress of both the coaches and athletes at a swim meet.An example: Event Heat Lane Stroke 3 2 4 50 free 9 3 4 100 back

FAQ Continued

Q. How are relays determined?

A. The coaches determine who swims what on the relay. Sometimes, depending on what type of meet and who is available, a coach may swim the fastest swimmers possible or they may spread kids amongst different relays for more points or more experience. This is solely the coach’s decision.

Q. Do I need to help at swim meets? I don’t know what to do.A. The sport of competitive swimming relies on volunteers. Without people volunteering there

would be no competitive swimming. At our home meets, each family is required to help with the swim meet. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer, from helping to set-up or putting things away, helping with the concession stand or timing. We are sure there is something to match your skill or interest. Please volunteer any way you can.

Q. WhatarethebenefitsofaUSASwimmingmembership?A. Thegreatestbenefitisthatitallowsyourchildtoswimatmoreswimmeetsandhavemore

opportunities to improve especially in the summer. It also provides catastrophic insurance at practices and sanctioned USA Swimming meets. Swimmers receive newsletters and other information from USA Swimming.

Q. Who do I contact if I have a concern about the program?A. Contact your swimmer’s coach. Please be considerate of the coach‘s personal time and speak

with them either before practice or immediately after practice. Please do not distract the coach during practice. You may also contact the YMCA’s Aquatic Director. If you wish, you may also contact the Executive Director of the YMCA. All contact information is included in the team handbook.

Q. Fundraising? I thought my dues took care of all the costs.A. Like most swim teams, program fees do not cover all program expenses. In order to keep the

program affordable, it is necessary to conduct fundraisers to help the program sustain itself. Our competitive swimming program is unique in that it is the only program we offer on a year-round basis; therefore, we have unique expenses associated with it. The YMCA is a not-for-profitcharityorganizationthathasagoalofofferingaffordableprograms,thuswiththeswimteam we must do fundraisers to keep it affordable and available.

Q. What is the Parent CommitteeA. The Parent Committee is the support body of the team. All parents are welcome and encouraged

to attend the organizational meetings. Matters relating to the team are decided at these meetings, and it is important to have the input and suggestions of as many members as possible.

Committee Positions: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two at-large members

Points to Keep in Mind

Individual swimmers develop at different rates. This fact alone may cause stress for swimmers and external pressure cannot quicken or slow the pace of natural development. Excessive pressure can, however, contribute to burnout.

Ten and unders are the most inconsistent swimmers and this can be frustrating for everyone involved. Parents and coaches must be patient and allow these swimmers to learn to love this sport. When a swimmer ages-up to the next competitive age group, they can be overwhelmed by the increase in competition. This is very normal when a swimmer moves from the upper level of an age group, to the lower level of the next age group.

Even the very best swimmer will have meets where they do not do their best times. These plateaus are a normal part of swimming. Please be supportive of these meets, and over the course of the season times should improve. Parents should realize that the older swimmers may have only two or three meets a year for which they will be properly rested and tapered for a peak performance.

Coaches, swimmers, and parents are human. Mistakes are inevitable. The most productive response is to admit them, excuse them, and move on. Grudges help no one.

Let the coaches coach, let the swimmers swim, let the parents support.

The process, not the awards, is the most valuable part of competitive swimming. The friendships, lessons, skills, and memories gained from participating in the sport and the team last forever. They help create a healthy, happy, and a strong person.

Parents, swimmers, and coaches may not always agree but honest and open communication maintains mutual respect and a positive relationship.
