Focus
of its instrument automation and laboratory management software systems. CIS general manager Steven Herrick explains that "software is one of the things explicitly mentioned in good laboratory practice regulations as something you must show an auditor if he comes in and asks. If you don't have the source code, how are you going to do that? The second reason to ship source code is so a customer can play with it." In fact, CIS even offers a course on how users can modify the code. But one important proviso here is that if a customer modifies code and creates a problem, CIS is not, under warranty obligation, required to bail him out.
More to Read Than Ever In case you haven't noticed, the
number of analytical chemistry publications seems to be on an exponential growth curve. Among the new entries premiering at Pittcon '84 was Analytical Instrument Industry Report. Published in Great Britain, AH Report will include the latest corporate quarterly revenue and profit figures, information on recent corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and interna
tional instrument contracts, updates on technological advances of interest to the industry, and feature articles on selected topics. The pilot issue of the newsletter, which was available at the conference, contained features on the scientific software market and on the impact of the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer on sales of dispersive infrared instruments. According to All Report senior editor Gordon Wilkinson, the new publication will depend solely on its subscription revenue, since it will not be accepting any advertising.
There are lots of people in the industry who are going to want to have access to All Report. Annual subscriptions are available for £195 (United Kingdom and Europe) or $375 (U.S. and the rest of the world) from All Report, P.O. Box 1, Chichester, West Sussex P020 6XR, United Kingdom.
SEAC Established Presentation of the first Charles N.
Reilley Award in Electroanalytical Chemistry to Allen J. Bard at this year's conference marked the debut of a new scientific association, the Soci
ety for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC). SEAC is "a new organization for scientists interested in all aspects of electroanalytical chemistry, from theory to practical applications," according to the premiere issue of the SEAC Newsletter.
A primary purpose of SEAC is to select a recipient of the Reilley award, which will be presented annually at the Pittsburgh Conference. The award, given in memory of Charles N. Reilley of the University of North Carolina, recognizes "an active researcher who has made a major contribution to the theory, instrumentation, or application of electroanalytical chemistry." Bioanalytical Systems Inc. of West Lafayette, Ind., has agreed to fund the $1000 award for a minimum of ten years.
In addition to selecting the award winner, SEAC will publish the SEAC Newsletter, will assist in organizing symposia, and will organize social events and special lectures. For further information, write to SEAC, Department of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221-0172.
