Holiday spending projected to be higher than ever

• According to the Int’l Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Post-Holiday Shopping Survey, respondents reported spending 16% more than in 2015 and 4% over what they projected they would spend in October of this year, if true this would likely be the best holiday shopping season in US history.

• The survey also stated that almost 70% of expenditures occurred at stores with both online and physical presences, and that overall, physical store retailers appear to be regaining some strength against online only stores.

ECONOMICTALKINGPOINTS

• CoStar states that brick and mortar retailers could shed up to 10% of its leased space in 2017 as they continue to “right size” in the new world of competitive online shopping; this will cause negative performance in many retail assets.

• Not all is bad. PREIT reported that they will take advantage of the three Macy’s lost in malls they own as an opportunity to reposition the malls into more valuable assets. In reality, many of these closed stores are excellent candidates for redevelopment.
