Spring into Summer with a fresh look at Sorrento Village. With over 60 retail stores, a street lined with heritage limestone buildings, the pristine bay beach at one end and rugged surf beach at the other, you’ll understand why Sorrento offers a lifestyle that is envied by all who visit. At less than 90 minutes from Melbourne via Peninsula Link, and an average of 30-40 minutes from across the Mornington Peninsula and Queenscliff, it’s quicker than you think to experience village life. Sorrento is a year round destination that offers so much more than natural beauty alone. It offers an experience. In an era where the retail landscape is changing, it’s sometimes good to remember what the pure enjoyment of shopping is like. A local experience, where many of the owners run their stores, can offer advice, and you can find unique gifts, homewares, fashion, jewellery plus so much more, puts the joy and

personalisation back into the retail experience. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited, you might be surprised to know that Sorrento is now bursting with fashion - 35 stores to be exact! From casual to sophisticated, custom made or mainstream, kids, mens, surfwear, jewellery, accessories and of course women. Of course the village is also quite an arts hub now with over 10 gallery spaces, and the range of contemporary homewares is outstanding. The coffee, food and wine goes without saying with the range of eateries to meet all tastes, or you can enjoy some relaxation therapy at one of the day and beauty spas. For a girls weekend away there really is no better destination.Come and experience the secrets of Sorrento, and Live the Life like we do!Natalie Garner, Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce

Join in one of Victoria’s best bay swims and soak up the picturesque coastline of the Mornington Peninsula. The Sorrento Bay Swim offers a great family day out as competitors of all ages can get involved.Proceeds raised from the swim go to the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club for training, rescue equipment and education resources for the Nippers, Cadets and Lifeguards to keep our beaches safe. The 2014 event will be the 11th year of the Bay Swim, which each year has gone from strength to strength. Last year there was close to 600 swimmers, including a large number of the Sorrento Surf Club Nippers entering their first open water swim. This event was established as a major fundraising activity for the Sorrento Surf Club by providing a safe, well managed swim held after

New Year’s Eve for competitors to enjoy. The Swim showcases the historic Sorrento shopping precinct and surroundings and is a drawcard for people looking for a great day out.Sorrento and its beaches are one of the major tourist destinations in Victoria. The Surf Life Saving Club provides a well patrolled beach environment for visitors to Sorrento back beach. Exclusively Sketa Fit and quality are top priorities for Adele Pernell, the innovator and creator behind fashion label Sketa. She understands that true style transcends fashion fads with the difference being the ‘Look’, and Sketa garments go the distance. Adele says; ‘Most of our clients complain their clothes are lasting too long!!!’ “Our clothing keeps looking great and Sketa’s prices are refreshingly affordable. We source our fabrics from Europe, Japan, and silks from India, plus there are only 120 pieces per style made - so you won’t be walking into yourself”.

Highlighted this season are luscious linens from Italy and Belgium in the form of shirts, pants and perfectly cut dresses. Natural greys and earthy hues mix with this season’s high octane brights of pink, orange and blue. Gorgeous for summer days spent barbequing by the pool, out for a bite or celebrating into the wee hours of the night. ‘We manufacture as much as possible in Australia. Up to 80% of our stock”, says Adele proudly. ‘There aren’t many of us left who do that’. Because Adele knows the rag trade inside out, you’ll be rest assured that you’re buying the kind of product that loves you back. Cut for women who know what they want, a Sketa garment fits – there’s no losing shape or falling apart. Longevity is the key. ‘Most of the stock on view in Pernell’s five boutiques is the Sketa label’ says Adele. Seek out your exclusive Sketa style this summer at her Sorrento store located at 2/42-44 Ocean Beach Rd. Why Shopping Local is so “in” right now.Encouraging people to shop local is really nothing new, but with the new age of on-line shopping plus large chain retailers dominating the retail landscape, I wonder if you ever stop to think – what’s missing and how are my shopping habits impacting where I live?If trends continue and we all don’t support our local independent retailers, no longer will you be able to find that unique dress, that original piece of artwork, that bespoke piece of furniture or be able to go the accountant in your own neighbourhood. Sure, you may be able to find it on-line, but can you actually talk to a real live person about your needs, will that dress fit correctly, will your shoes match your handbag or will that artwork have a great local story behind it?Supporting local retailers and services does more than just put money in the pocket of the store, it benefits the whole community. With local retailers and services come jobs, with jobs comes disposable income to spend back in the community, with more people working and living in your community comes better facilities and a nicer place for us all to live, not to mention less travel in the car. A vibrant local shopping strip is an integral part of an active community, allowing people to live, work and play locally. To give you an example, If every adult on the Mornington Peninsula spent just $5 per week in their local independent shops, instead of online or at the big supermarkets, it would be worth an extra $20.9 million per year going into the local economy. Makes you think doesn’t it?

• The heart of fashion - Come and meet Sorrento’s fashionista’s – over 30 stores now in the village, sourcing pieces from designers around the globe

• The heart of home – more than contemporary & individual homewares, inspiration from interior designers and furniture makers

• The Arts Hub – 10 different gallery spaces – bespoke international and local art, and you can try it in your home before you buy.

• Gourmet experiences – over 20 eateries for all tastes and budgets, and not a bad coffee in the town. Where else can you get a take-home ready to heat and eat meal made on premises each day (Stringers of course!)

• Time to unwind – day spas, Pilates, yoga, hair and beauty – make it about you in Sorrento

• Some things you’ll only find in Sorrento – an old fashioned toy and lolly shop and one of the best antique stores that you can lose yourself in.

• Accommodation to suit all needs and budgets plus all services and sporting clubs all within a short walk from the village.

• Sorrento’s natural and historic assets are truly unique, a street lined with heritage limestone buildings where you can walk from bay to ocean taking in the village on the way, plus all the marine activities you could ever want.

Why wouldn’t you want to shop, play, stay in Sorrento?

Blooming Marvellous Claire Kelly gets up early. She left home at 2.30am this morning and was back in her boutique flower studio Hummingbird Blooms by 9.00am. ‘I go to the city markets once or twice a week. Hummingbird Blooms prides itself on stocking a wide range of fresh cut flowers. There’s always something new’.Claire’s love affair with all things floral began as a child. Many hours were spent in the garden with her father admiring the natural world. After completing an Advanced Diploma of Horticulture at Burnley College, she gravitated towards the artistry of floral arrangement and so studied Floral Design at Box Hill Institute. She has been in the industry for over eight years. ‘The beauty and perfume of flowers is captivating’, says Claire, and captivated you’ll be when entering Hummingbird Blooms. Claire’s creative skills as a floral designer means you’ll find the perfect creation to suit your needs. Her wedding work is well known – delicate table arrangements, stunning bouquets and breathtaking floral decorations make your day a sensory sensation. (Remember to book at least two months in advance!) Her extensive knowledge of floral symbolism and how colour works also means her blooms are ideal for more sombre occasions such as funerals. ‘Creating work that evokes emotion is what I love’, says Claire, who is onsite most of the time and has the help of three staff.Great quality flowers that go the distance – her roses can last up to three weeks –inspiring designs and a huge range of house flowers (think lots of colour for summer) means there’s something for all lovers of natural beauty at Hummingbird Blooms. Prices start from $35 a bouquet.Hummingbird Blooms18-24 Ocean Beach RoadSorrento03 5984 4342www.hummingbirdblooms.com

The word is out about this vibrant, sophisticated, interior designer - who channels the essence of a child’s creativity to allow the inspiration of decoration and design to flow. A. Rose Interior Inspirations would love to start weaving colours and themes throughout your child’s space to create functional living environments for the little people in your world. Whether the space is a nursery, bedroom, playroom or outdoor play area, Liz Csapo, founder of A. Rose Interior Inspirations, believes the pure essence of your child can be expressed throughout her designs. Families who are overloaded with interior inspiration and are just not sure how to piece it all together to make the decoration or design work for their family’s requirements should contact Liz. Other projects can consist of a family having the vision for their space however lacking the

confidence to create it.Liz added: “I understand that many people consider the nature of A. Rose Interior Inspirations a luxury, as many interior designers come with an expensive price tag. However, to ensure costs can be kept to a minimum for a project, I tend to DIY a lot of finishes and products. I ensure each item is finished professionally, tastefully and with its own touch of class. All products are very unique - sometimes I surprise myself in what I can actually do!” Artistic Liz finds peace with a paintbrush and her wonderful custom paintings are created for completed spaces and private purchases from the comfort of the home of the imaginative designer. She will skilfully re-upholster a vintage armchair in the perfect fabric to ensure the vision of a design is completed within your family’s budget and if a handmade, heartfelt piece can’t be created in her Mornington Peninsula home, she will source the

required product from a local supplier.“There are NO limits,” Liz stated as she went on to explain how she endeavours to create spaces where children will continue to grow into throughout their childhood. “Clients do not need to spend a fortune on every item, I would rather mix inexpensive basic accessories with a few statement pieces of furniture.” Clients of A. Rose Interior Inspirations clients are often that pleased with their child’s finished room that Liz is asked to move on to decorating other spaces in their homes. Families will not be disappointed should they engage the services of A. Rose Interior Inspirations with its wide variety of services. Liz can reached by visiting her website at www.aroseinspirations.com.au or put her Facebook page into your ‘like’ list by logging on to www.facebook.com/ARoseInteriorInspirations

Walking into Marlene Miller Antiques is like jumping inside a story book where you become the main character. You are transported to a time of afternoon teas in rose adorned cups, striking it rich in the gold fields of the 1800’s or promenading the town in the latest mink stole mid 1940’s. The store reads like who’s who from the seventeenth century onwards. One hundred year old chests support sharpened Italian tools from the 1850’s. Victorian Cedar bookcases lay in wait for poetry and fiction from as early as the 1680’s to tell their tales. Antiques have the wonderful power to divulge our past so we can look towards the future. Marlene has been part of the antique world for over twenty-eight years. Her keen eye is personified in her eclectic range of fine jewellery. Viewing the magnificent

range of Gold Rush brooches, necklaces and rings is a must. The gold in these early pieces is fluid, almost seeming to spring back into shape when touched. ‘Baby’ Georgian money brooches with pearls symbolising tears framing locks of hair intrigue, while contemporary pieces made by Melbourne’s top jewellers will impress - this is the perfect place to find that engagement or wedding ring you’ve been searching for.Step back into a world where craftsmanship is honoured and age is a thing of beauty at Marlene Miller Antiques, where magic really does happen and time stands still.Marlene Miller Antiques - open seven days a week 10.00 (ish) am till 5.00pm (closed Christmas and Good Friday)128 Ocean Beach Road, SorrentoPh: 03 5984 1762 M: 0438 537 757

I love my ugg boots. They have kept me company throughout countless days tapping away at the computer. Rod and Christine from Peninsula Ugg Boots tell me that ugg boots should come with the warning ‘if you try these on, you may never want to take them off’ and they are right. Peninsula Ugg Boots has been open since August this year, but their all Australian sheep skin suppliers have been in the industry since the beginning of the 70’s. Only the best one hundred per cent Australian wool products sourced from Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney are provided by this local sheep skin specialist who will soon be including, from EMU Australia, a beautiful Marino

Wool ladies fashion wear range to launch later this year.Sheep skin products are an all year item. Naturally water resistant means cool air can flow through the material during summer allowing anyone wearing or sitting on the fabric to stay cool. During the winter the sheepskin acts as an insulator keeping warm air close to the body in total comfort. The traditional chestnut ugg boot has always been popular, but now you can select from a new range Jumbo Ugg Boots and Pacific Australia selections, plus an exciting range of colours including black, red, raisin, pink, blue, sand or lilac. Peninsula Ugg Boots also stock a wide range

of stylish and comfortable Koalabi Fashion Boots which can be worn to any special occasion. As an alternative for summer wear, you can also select from their fashionable range of sandals to complement your summer outfits - and the range of products doesn’t stop there. Kids’ boots, Baby booties, slippers, scuffs, moccasins, jackets, gloves, car seat covers and rugs (in a variety of colours) all get a look in and all at reasonable prices.Peninsula Ugg BootsShop 3, 3293 Point Nepean Rd (near the beach rotunda) SorrentoPhone: 0490 087 803Open seven days a week

Art for Art’s Sake Meredith Langmaid’s work leads you into a world where art becomes a part of every-day life. Her new art space Gallery Vespa in Sorrento (opened October 5th) celebrates the work of peninsula artists and their every-day quest to produce only the best.Langmaid studied art for some time before completing her four year degree at the Australian College of Photography, Fine Art and Communication. Now a fashion photographer (she has her own list of models), Gallery Vespa provides a space to show case work by local artists and a base to develop her own craft.

The list of artists on show at Gallery Vespa is impressive. Delicate abstracts by Donna Magree (who went to school with Langmaid) hang alongside tactile earth inspired collages by Gidja Walker. You’ll view Indigenous art by Dan Kelly, still life by Vicki Sullivan and ethereal explorations by Rhys Grunden. Lew Brennan’s portrait of Barry Charles has been selected for final hanging and judging in the prestigious Mortimer Art Prize which is a huge accomplishment. As Lew says; ‘Sometimes the sun even shines on a worn out old dogs arse’.‘Exhibitions run for around three weeks and there is a waiting list’, says Langmaid.

‘Sometimes I seek out new work, or artists come to me. You never know what to expect’, accept that the work will always be of a high standard. Sorrento has been calling out for a gallery like Vespa; a place where art lovers can hang out and chat about the art on show and the art of the future. Look out for more of Langmaid’s own unique work plus lead lighting and crystal creation on show over the summer months at Vespa; where art doesn’t imitate life, it is it. Hot showers, a delicious morning or afternoon tea and fully a licensed on board café are included on all tours.Gift Vouchers and Dolphin Swim and Bathe packages are also available, so you can end your experience with a relaxing soak in the thermal pools of Peninsula Hot Springs.2013 saw the introduction of the Twilight Fish and Chip Cruise on Moonraker, the Snorkel with the Seals and Sea Dragons, and an ever so romantic champagne cruise. Discover Point NepeanWith its spectacular natural and built landscapes, Point Nepean National Park is a place that leaves an immediate impression on anyone who visits. It is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural landscapes. The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay.The entrance to Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily forted port of the British Empire and was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the South’. Visitors can see an example of this at the very point of the park where Fort Nepean is located. It is where an extensive network of forts, gun emplacements and tunnels are located. Also at the park is the Quarantine Station, established in 1852, it offers a unique opportunity to see an infectious disease processing facility still in place. Here visitors will

find many historic buildings used in quarantine which include hospitals, a disinfecting complex, a morgue, cemetery and much more to explore.Point Nepean has an extensive network of tracks to cycle or walk. One recently opened is the Range Area Walk, it takes visitors through an area of the park where the Officer Cadets, who occupied the site for three decades, trained. Features on this walk include a 400m firing range and Monash Break and Light with sweeping views of the park and Melbourne City.Visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic at Point Nepean with the shade of a Moonah tree. They are part of a coastal habitat complete with wildlife including echidnas, bandicoots, wallabies, reptiles. In the surrounding waters visitors might also spot bottlenose Dolphins or Australian Fur Seals. Point Nepean National Park is located at the end of Point Nepean Road, Portsea. Park entry is freeFor more information visit www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963

New concept in Port Douglas to rival the food scene of Australia’s culture capitals.New restaurant operators at Niramaya Villas and Spa in Port Douglas will see Southeast Asian inspired Rasa Restaurant and Lounge start turning heads from 9 November.‘Rasa’ in Indonesian translates back to taste, sense, feeling and flavor. The restaurant will be operated by Andrew Saville, Jared Jones and Louise St George.Their vision is to provide a refined

dining experience inspired by flavours of Thailand, Bali, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, China and Japan. “Asian fusion food has been at the top of the culinary scene the past few years and continues to be a leading concept throughout major capital cities,” Andrew says.“Similar concepts can be found in Southeast Asian countries or in Australia’s trendy food hubs in Melbourne or Sydney.“Drawing on authentic street-food inspired fare while incorporating western techniques, we’ll produce visually outstanding, flavour and texturally balanced dishes.”Andrew says an example, they could make Tom Yum Consommé’

by taking a traditional hot and sour Thai soup then refining it through French clarification techniques of egg whites.“This produces a highly aromatic soup with prefect clarity s to heighten the senses of taste, smell, colour and texture,” he says.“We’ll be using the existing flavours and composites of cultural food and refining the flavours and textures with modern techniques. “We’ll also experiment with the chemistry of foods with modern techniques such as molecular gastronomy, to turn fats into powders or liquids into gels and pearls.”For more information visit www.niramaya.com.au

When Christine decided to organise a special dinner for her partners birthday, she wanted to do something different and decided to contact Roberto at Your Personal Maitre d.“I saw the advertisement in the magazine and wanted to have a dinner party. I thought this would be really novel but it actually turned out to be one of the best nights we have had and it wasn’t even expensive,” a delighted Christine said. “Roberto took care of everything from helping us choose the menu, to bringing music, his own beautiful plates and glassware and creating the perfect ambient setting which Italians are well known for.”Christine and her guests dined on salmon with pistachio and mango salad, rocket salads, antipasto and desserts to die for.“He served this amazing strawberries in balsamic vinegar with mascapone and home-made white chocolate ice-cream. It was

unbelievable. The best thing was we didn’t have to move. He even bought his own dishwashing liquid to clean up. I think the kitchen might have been cleaner than when I do it,” she says with a laugh. It’s easy to have Your Personal Maitre d, when Roberto Biguzzi prepares an Italian feast in your own home.Born in Italy, Roberto grew up along the Adriatic coast and from an early age, fell in love with the magical vibe of restaurants.“I love the fresh shower perfume, the smoky dresses and the noise of the ice inside the shaker where bar tenders create fantastic cocktails,” says Roberto who then decided to make a living from his culinary pursuits.“After working in Italy, the UK and Australia, I decided there was a need for a personal chef and maitre d to come to your home and serve your guests. I want to make a

particular experience for people but you cannot do that in a restaurant. So this is the possibility for people to fully experience with their guests in their own house with yummy food and wine, and be treated like royalty.”Your Maitre D creates a beautiful dining experience at home where the host can enjoy the time with their guests.“I bring the restaurant experience to the house, take care of the music, set up the table, the atmosphere, food and wine, and create a menu for everything from dinner parties to an intimate dinner for two.”Your Maitre d is a unique Italian style food experience with inspirational regional cuisine, based on simple, beautiful ingredients. To find out about Your Personal Maitre d go to www.yourpersonalmaitred.com, check out the Facebook page, or phone Roberto on 0426 814 138.

Service matters. Well, it does at Just Fine Food.Co-owner (with her husband Graeme) Judy Howarth laughs; ‘We intended to have the business for a couple of years, and now we’re in our twenty second!’ (Their chef has been with them since the beginning and staff remains constant). ‘A big part of our success is attention to customer satisfaction’, says Judy. ‘We offer complete table service. We know what we’re doing’. One of the peninsula’s best eateries, Just Fine Food is just that – a haven for fresh, prepared to order delicious fare that tantalises the tastebuds. Period building ambience seals the deal. Let’s start with the baseI’ve always believed that if you start with a great base the rest will follow. You’ve got to have a solid foundation, and that is exactly what husband and wife team David Stringer and Elizabeth Blane from the Smokehouse in Sorrento have created with their delicious and nutritious home-made wood fired pizza bases. The Smokehouse is well known for making fabulous fare for food lovers with special requirements. Gluten, dairy, citrus or fructose intolerant (and coeliacs) can chow down on scrumptious food alongside those who never have to worry about what they put in their mouth at this

restaurant.Using simple, fresh and seasonal ingredients is what Smokehouse does best. David loves food and uses locally sourced ingredients and seasonal organic produce grown on their White Cliffs property. If reviews are anything to go by – the Smokehouse has been recommended in The Age Good Food Guide since 2001 and their pizzas were recently described by the online magazine Broadsheet featuring Melbourne Cafes, bars and restaurants as ‘the best in time’ – Smokehouse is the place to be. But if you can’t get down to Sorrento due to busy time tables, or you just can’t wait for some special pizza pizazz, you can now create your own masterpiece at home with that sensational Smokehouse flavour.‘The pizza bases were a natural progression from the restaurant’, says Elizabeth who, by the way, juggles the restaurant, pizza bases and seven children with her

husband. She knows how handy it can be to have something at the ready in the freezer. ‘We opted for minimal ingredients; just flour, water, olive oil, yeast and a pinch of salt because other brands have very very long ingredient lists’, she goes on. A Smokehouse pizza base is completely preservative free.Available from the fridge in the deli section of selected stores, you’ll find Smokehouse pizza bases from Sorrento to Beaumaris, Fitzroy North to Montmorency to Richmond and of course in Mornington; just Google smokehousepizzabases.wix.com/home to check out the list of stockists. With baking instructions included you’ll be creating your own pizza favourites in no time, with a little help from Smokehouse – naturally.Smokehouse Restaurant182 Ocean Beach Rd SorrentoPh. 5984 1246E.
