B Y NIKKI ACKERMANSTAFFWRITER
As she dances as part of the MilwaukeeBallets The Nutcracker for the 10th consecu-tive year, 16-year-old Ashley Doherty reflects ona childhood spent on her toes.
Enrolled by her parents in a myriad of activ-ities starting at a young age, the MenomoneeFalls High School junior quickly found her niche.
(I was also in) soccer, gymnastics, swim-ming, baseball and horseback riding...and Ienjoyed them all, Ashley said. However, as Igot older, my love for dance grew, as did thecommitment of time it would take to train. That iswhen it became apparent that my focus wouldbe ballet.
And I have never regretted it, she said.Ashleys 2013 Nutcracker experience is a
bittersweet one as this will likely be her last yearas part of the beloved tradition so that she canfocus on college preparation. The teen hasplayed just about every student role in the holi-day ballet that includes more than 100 children
and this year she will take on two rolesthat ofa friend in the opening party scene and anoth-er as a mother ginger child. As the longest-run-ning student cast member, Ashley takes with her10 seasons of magical memories.
The excitement and emotion I feel witheach and every show is unmatched and I feeltruly blessed and fortunate to have had thisexperience, she said. Making new friends, getting to know many professional dancers on amore personal level, helping to bring the storyof 'The Nutcracker' to life for others to enjoy areall memories that will be with me forever.
Entering the world of ballet at the age oftwo and joining the Milwaukee Ballet through alocal branch at age four, Ashley is now at thehighest level to which one can rise beforebecoming a professional.
Dance has been such an integral part ofAshleys life and such a great passion for her, said Ashleys mother, Linda Doherty. Right nowshe wants to focus on college, but I cant imag-ine her ever not dancing.
Indeed, Ashley said that ballet has brought
her many rewards.Ballet has allowed me the opportunity to
learn how to express emotion in a beautiful, artistic, non-verbal way and it has been a greatsource of stress relief from the challenges Isometimes face in my life, she said. It hashelped keep me fit and has increased my stami-na, coordination, strength and flexibility.
Ashley went on to note that the life lessonsshe has collected beyond the slippers and leo-tard have been invaluable.
Ballet has helped me develop confidence, poise, musicality, good listening skills, as well astaught me how to be a good time manager, she said.
The performance art is not for the faint ofheart, however, as a major timecommitmentand a lot of hard workisrequired. At Ashleys level, practices run threehours per day six days each week and that timeincreases when a production lies ahead.
A lot of people ask Ashley, Are youcrazy? because it takes up so much time, saidLinda. You have to really love it.
Ashley has gone above and beyond to alsoparticipate in weeks-long summer intensivedance programs, her most recent one being inNew York City as part of the Joffrey Ballet.Performing in various major cities, especially thelargest one in the country, is the dream of any-one passionate about dance, she said.
Although she has made a monumentalinvestment in dancing over the yearsIt is such
a commitment that many of the girls who get toher level are home-schooled, LindanotedAshley has managed to also excel aca-demically as a National Honor Society,National Spanish Honor Society and Art HonorSociety student.
Education is equally important to her heras dance; she is very driven that way, Lindasaid. She is also very, very artistic and I thinkthat flows from the dancing.
Still a typical teenager in many ways,Ashley also makes time for fun. She hangs out
with her many friends and joins in typical highschool activities like the Powder Puff footballgame this fall. (She played under the name ofTwinkle Toes, naturally.)
Shes an all-around girl, Linda said. Sheloves everyone and has a very positive outlookon life.
Finding a balance between dancing and allthe other facets of her colorful life can be diffi-cult, Ashley admitted, but she wouldnt changea thing.
Managing, planning and balancing thisschedule with other outside activities such aschurch, school work, and fun can at times bechallenging and exhausting, but also allows meto have a great sense of pride in my accom-plishments, she said.
A mentor at heart, Ashley makes a point toguide younger dancers, namely her two balleri-na sisters12-year-old Kailee and nine-year-oldShannonwho have also been in TheNutcracker.
Last year all three girls performed in theshow and this year Kailee will participate withher older sister.
Linda said she and her husband, Bryan, willbe in the audience for many of their daughtersperformances.
When I watch all three of my girls dance,it is with awe, said Linda. With Ashley, I havewatched her grow up and flourish, and that hasbeen such a blessing. I am so proud of her.
As Ashley looks toward a bright future, pos-
sibly seeking a career in medicine, she is certainthat one element will remain the same. There is no better feeling for me than being
on stage and performing. It is simply amazing, she said. For me, ballet is so much more thanjust something I do; it is a part of who I am andwho I will always be.
The Nutcracker will run at Uihlein Hall atthe Marcus Center for Performing Arts in down-town Milwaukee Dec. 14-27. For ticket informa-tion, call (414) 902-2103 or visit www.milwau-keeballet.org/tickets/overview.

The holidays have arrived. Let the shoppingbegin! And so it begins' the days and days ofshopping on end for the perfect gift for each
and every person on your list. You're all gung-ho at first with the best of intentions, but as thedays whittle down and you realize you haven'tgotten very far on your list, the goal of pur-chasing the perfect gift flies out the door andalmost anything will do. What a pity! We've allbeen there, done that, but this year, it doesn'thave to be that way. You can change yourstripes, start shopping early and get the perfectgift for everyone on your list. Here are somepointers.
Less is more When it comes gift giving, moreis not always best. You don't have to break thebank and buy the recipient everything they askfor. One or two gifts of THEIR choosing will suf-fice. That's right-THEIR choosing. It is a gift forthem, not you, so buy what they ask for, and ifthey didn't make any requests, buy what suitstheir needs and wants, not yours.
Budget matters There is no need to go deepinto debt with your holiday shopping. If therecipient has a request out of your price range, find someone to split the cost with or find anoth-er gift to buy. The recipient will understand, andif they don't, oh well. It's your bottom line. You

You're not much of a shopper, which mayexplain why you put off the purchase ofChristmas gifts until the last minute. Yep, you'reone of those last-minute shoppers delvingthrough the leftovers on store shelves onChristmas Eve. This year, you're changing yourways. Here are some tips to ensure you're suc-cessful.
Research beforehandWhile some people may tell you exactly
what they want, others won't have any idea andleave the choosing to you. Find out ahead of
time what recipients like, want and need, anddo some online shopping to see what's out thatthere might suit them.
Start earlySome people start their shopping the day
after Christmas. You may not be able to go thatfar, but you can certainly be on the lookout forgood deals throughout the year. You neverknow when one might pop up, and the earlieryou start your shopping, the better the savingsand selection will be. You might also get fin-ished sooner!
Make a listDon't go shopping without any inkling of
what you need to buy. This will lead to impulsepurchases and an empty wallet in no time.Determine beforehand whom you need to buyfor, what you need to buy them and how muchyou intend to spend on them.
Be selectiveAnyone can pick out a gift for someone. To
make your gifts special, you need to put thoughtinto what you buy and take the time to person-alize each and every gift, either with a hand-written note or some other token. Let the recipi-ent know why you selected what you did, and
when possible, make it theirs with monograms, photos and such.Present with careAfter all the time you put in shopping, you
don't want to stuff your gifts into bags and dropthem at recipients' feet. They won't know howmuch effort you put into the selection processand their reaction may show it. Take the time towrap your gifts beautifully and watch them getopened. The smiles you receive will make all ofthe effort worthwhile!

LLaa sstt M Miinnuu tt ee GGiif f tt GGuuiid d eedon't want to be paying for some-thing for someone else long into thenew year.
Selectivity is key Don't buy thefirst thing you come across. Take thetime to shop around and check outthe merchandise. Make sure the giftyou choose meets the recipient'squalifications and will last for a longtime. Should additional services orproducts be offered, consider themcarefully. The extended warrantymay not be as beneficial as the accessoriespackage.
Presentation counts The right gift will meanlittle with sloppy packaging. Select a nice giftwrap or bag, wrap the gift with care andattach a bow or ribbon and a gift tag. Got agift card instead? Purchase a card, envelopeor gift bag or box to put it in. Prove to therecipient that you took the time to make thepresentation of the gift attractive-whatever itmay be.
Delivery is everything Find a good time todeliver the gift when the recipient will be able toappreciate it. This could be at lunch, a party oran after-hours gathering. If you can't find a con-venient time, do not despair. Just drop the giftoff and tell the recipient to enjoy!
Finding the perfect gift takes work. Put forththe effort, and it will not go unnoticed. When allis said and done, the gifts that have been handselected and wrapped with care will be theones remembered! Those are the gifts from theheart after all.

Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderfulpatients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoingsurgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayersfor a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind ourreadership about one of the many important reasons to seetheir dentist regularly.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral orpharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths.
Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head andneck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chanceof spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cellcarcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makesoral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appearsas a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancercell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as aresult of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repairthemselves.
Where can oral cancer appearin my mouth?Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.
It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arisefrom many types of tissue in the mouth including salivaryglands and lymph tissue.
What should I look for?Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does
not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesionon the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually palecolored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An earlywarning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or ared patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when thetumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongueproblems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain maybe a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless.
How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not?A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion.
However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benignand malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A non-
invasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out thepresence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method fordetermining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present isthrough biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopicevaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous.
What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determinedto be cancerous?
Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical
incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area inquestion. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can alsobe used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, andsize of the lesion.
What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer?People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are
at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are peoplethat have been diagnosed with HPV or Human PapillomaVirus; which is a s exually transmitted disease which MichaelDouglas recently associated with his throat cancer.
Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposureto radiation may also be at higher risk.
We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for yourcomplimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease thatcan be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental weperform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a newpatient and at each re-care visit!
