About My Grandmother…
• Betsy “Susan” Woodall• My grandmother• Born on August 8th, 1939 in Weldon, North
Carolina
Courage
• Wanted to learn how to speak French, so she moved to France alone and went to college in France
• Learned to speak it so fluently her American accent wasn’t heard
Family Activities
• Liked to work with her family
• Went down to the beach every summer
• Ran a hotel every summer– One summer, they had to
renovate it together– It was the “best summer
ever”
Travel Experiences
• Went to Cancun, Mexico– Ate nothing but banana
and mayo sandwiches for a week
• Food and water were so dirty!
• Traveled to Europe with her mother and three children for the entire summer
Contests
• Got second place in the Miss North Carolina contest
• the girl who beat her went on to be Miss USA
• In 1961, she became Miss North Carolina
Grandma’s 3rd Grade
• Rural town which means it’s in the country
• Was in third grade before the end of segregation
• Went to a one room school house
• Before schools were centralized
My Thoughts…
• I had a lot of fun learning about her, she’s definitely a role model for me
• I was surprised to learn that she changed her name
• I was happy to learn that she had a lot of fun with her kids
• We both are going or have been to Paris!!
