Highlights of the report

A survey of over 1500 recruiters reflects a positive hiring outlook for the year.

According to ‘JobSpeak’ - The Overall Job Index fell from 776 in November to 697 in December 2008, a

drop of 10% in new jobs.

Overall, this implies a 31% decline in new jobs since July 2008

Naukri.com, India’s No.1 Job Site, has spread its reach across industries, functional areas, metros, tier II and

tier III cities across India. ‘JobSpeak’-The Naukri.com Job Index is a unique initiative by Naukri.com to provide

its stakeholders and users an overview on job prospects and attractive occupations as well as a peek into

industries gaining attractiveness and industries losing sheen. Overall, it is indicative of the health of the

economy.

The report compiles an index on new job listings added to the site every month. The listings are

representative of the jobs posted on the site by recruiters that are clients of Naukri.com. The team at

Naukri.com has successfully mapped and derived trends to reflect the online availability of jobs. To calculate

the index, new jobs in July have been taken on a base of 1000. The December index is compared with July

2008. A summary of trends in December is presented in the Executive Summary section. The charts with the

corresponding numbers have been collated in the annexure.

Executive Summary

The outlook is positive on hiring for 2009

A survey conducted by Naukri with over 1500 recruiters across the country revealed a positive outlook for

the year 2009. However some sectors see a high degree of layoffs as well.

the sector in the upcoming months.

December 2008 : Creation of New jobs were down by 10% as compared to November 2008

The overall index at 697 in December, is almost 10% down from 776 in November. Previous years have

seen a marginal decline in hiring in December vs

November. New Jobs this year have seen a decline by

almost 10%. Overall, this implies a 31% decline in new

jobs since July 2008, thus reflecting the economic

turbulence and impact of the recession in US.

Industries that remain upbeat on hiring include Pharma

and Telecom. Jobs in the Education sector moved up.

IT, Auto, BPO, continue to witness a slowdown in

hiring.

A break up of jobs available for various experience

bands reveals that professionals with 4-7 years of

experience are at a higher demand than freshers

and younger professionals in the industry. 36% of

the jobs catered to the experience band of 4-7

years, while 30% of the jobs catered to the

experience band of 0-3 years.

Hiring Outlook and Expectations for the year 2009

The survey of 1500+ recruiters reveals a positive hiring scenario. 9.5% of the recruiters anticipate layoffs,

14.3% expect a freeze, 37.8% expect replacement hiring and 38% predict addition of new jobs

Over 40% of recruiters in Pharma, IT, ITeS, Retail, Telecom projected creation of new jobs in 2009.

The survey indicated highest layoffs for the Real Estate Sector, followed by IT at 16% and 13%

respectively.

City wise Analysis: Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata witness a decline in new jobs

Slowdown in opportunities, new jobs in metros fall by a considerable margin. Mumbai remains stable and

close to the October levels

The season experiences a

Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Cochin, Baroda remain less affected, jobs grow/decline by a small margin.

Industry Analysis: Automobile slips, jobs decline by 28%

The Automobile sector, saw a decline in hiring by almost 28% as compared with November. Year End

seemed to be comparatively slower for the sector.

Construction and Engineering and Real Estate continue to witness a slowdown in hiring.

IT index dips to 682, a decline of about 12% from November 2008. BPO and ITeS have seen a dip in hiring

for the second consecutive month; the index stands at a low of 772.

Functional Area / Department Analysis: Sales and Development Professionals see a growth in new jobs.

Sales and Business Development professionals are getting back in demand, as companies fight recession

focusing on core departments. The index climbed up for a second month from 786 in November to 819 in

December 2008

IT – Software Department

seems to be at a freeze across

most industries with the index

dipping to a low of 664 in

December as compared to 784

in November.

Teaching and Education professionals see a growth in demand as the Index moves up from 634 in

November to 835 in December. The index hit an all time low of 498 in October.

Accounts, Finance, Banking and Insurance professionals continue to see lowering demand, with the index

moving down for the sixth consecutive month.

Pharma and Biotech professionals continue to see increased jobs in the sector with the index moving up

from 939 in November to 1064 in December.

Ancillary to the Real Estate Industry, Architecture and Interior Designing professionals see a decline in

new jobs.

Methodology

The survey was conducted via email with recruiters across India. Results were tabulated for each sector

exclusively.

Data for calculating the Index has been sourced from Naukri.com and is reflective of the new job listings on

the site. Jobs have been categorised by location, funcpleasetional area, and industry. The index has been

calculated across cities/ functional area- Deptt/ industry verticals.

On the basis of new job listings added to the site every month, the data shows an increase or decline in the

jobs. To calculate the index, jobs in July 2008 have been taken on a base of 1000. The August, September,

October, November and December data has been indexed against July 2008. The report produced monthly will

show hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas. More than 32500 clients use

Naukri.com, leading to high reliability of the data. Naukri,com serviced over 24500 unique clients in H1 2008
