European Pharmacopoeia The publication of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) resulted in a standardization of the classification of threads and gauges of surgical suture material. The Ph. Eur. specifies a decimal classification and metric coding for the gauges. It quotes a thread diameter of 1/10 mm, so that the thread gauge of 3.5 has a diameter of 0,35 mm. The following table of the gauges gives a comparison of the metric and the USP gauge coding.

CHIRLAC rapid

CHIRLAC rapid is a short-term absorbable, coated, synthetic, multifilament suture made of low molecular weight polyglycolic acid. Sterile CHIRLAC Rapid is available in violet and natural.

Progressive loss of tensile strength andabsorption of Chirlac rapid occurs by hydrolysis,where the polymer degrades to glycolic acid, which is subsequently absorbed and metabolized by the body.

Absorption begins as a loss of tensilestrength without appreciable loss of mass.

Indication: Gynaecology, Obstetric (e.g. episiotomies), Ophthalmic (e.g. conjunctiva), Odontology (e.g. oral mucosa), Paediatric, ENT, Skin Closure (e.g. intracutaneous, subcutaneous) and Ligation.

Sizes: 6/0 to 2 USP

MONOLAC

MONOLAC is a mid-term absorbable, synthetic, monofilament suturemade of glycolide and ε-Caprolactone, available in natural color forthe closure of superficial wounds and in violet for all other indications,when a mid-term monofilament is needed.

During absorption the material elicited only avery slight inflammation.

The material is degraded into adipic acid,which is completely metabolized in thebody. The process begins with a loss of tensile strength, later the loss of mass follows.

Indication: Soft tissue in all specialties, Skin Closure (e.g. intracutaneous, subcutaneous), Ligation, Gynaecology, Obstetric, Urology, ENT, Maxillofacial, Paediatric and Gastrointestinal surgery.

CHIRASORB

CHIRASORB is a mid-term absorbable, coated, synthetic, multifila-ment suture made of 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. The sub-stances contained in the coating and suture are nonantigenic and noncollagenous.

Sterile Chirasorb is available in violet or natural. The product elicits a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues. Progressive loss of tensile strength and absorption of Chirasorb occurs by hydrolysis, when the polymer is degraded to glycolic and lactic acids, which are subsequently absorbed and metabolized by the body.

Indication: General surgery, Gynaecology, Obstetric, Urology, Orthopaedic, Ophthalmic, Skin Closure (e.g. intracutaneous, subcutaneous), Muscular layer, Ligation and Gastrointestinal surgery.

Sizes 6/0 to 4 USP

Coating: Poly(glycolide-co-lactide) (30/70) and calcium stearate

POLYDOX is a long-term absorbable, synthetic,monofilament suture made of polydioxanone.The suture offers good handling combinedwith great strength due to its slow degradation profile.

Polydox is ideal for all indications, wherean extended wound support of more than 4weeks is desirable. The threads are available inviolet and natural.

CHIRALEN is a non−absorbable, monofilament suturemade from polypropylene. The thread is hydrophobic and is not subject to degradation by tissue enzymes.

Chiralen has a smooth, non−poroussurface, that guarantees a clean andsmooth passage through the tissue, optimalelasticity, elongation properties and greatvisibility. In tissues it has a minimal acute inflammatory reaction.

The thread shows no capillary effect and is there-fore especially suited for stitches in infected wounds.

SILON monofilament is a non−absorbable, syntheticsuture made from polyamide, which has a smooth non−porous surface.

The thread is extremely useful for skinsutures and has a high tensile strength inknots and knots tie down easily. The threadis available in a blue and black color.

Slight initial inflammatory tissue reaction to aforeign body. As with any nylon suture, thoughnot absorbed, progressive hydrolysis of the suturemay result in gradual loss of its tensile strength over time.

Indication: Skin Closure (e.g. intracutaneous, subcutaneous), Plastic, Reconstructive and Ophthalmic surgery.

TERVALON is a braided, polyester suture material with a special coat-ing of ethyl−cellulose and beeswax, which guarantees effortless tissuepassage and excellent knot−tying characteristics.

The extreme tensile strength and tissue compatibility are furtherpositive characteristics of Tervalon, which is used in allareas of surgery due to its favourable features.

Tervalon is applicable wherever non-absorbability and low friction passage through tissues are needed.

SILK

SILK is a natural and non−absorbable, multifilament suture material. To give Silk a certain stiffness a special technology is applied.

The braided suture is stiffened by inserting a twisted stem fromthe same material. The Silk is coated with silicone toachieve water resistance and avoid its highcapillary effect.

Silk is characterised by its constant thread diameter and high tensile strength. The advantages of Silk sutures are their extreme pliability, ease of handling and excellent knot strength.

Indication: General surgery, Gastrointestinal tract, Skin Surgery, Oral Surgery, Neurosurgery and Ligation.

MESHES

Meshes have become standard for repair of abdominal wall hernias. Surgical mesh is a sterile woven material designed for permanently implantation within the body during open or laparoscopic procedures. A wide range of mesh implants are available, with two main functions: to stabilise and strengthen soft tissue defects, and to act as a sling to support prolapsed organs and viscera. In tissue repair applications, the mesh serves to mechanically strengthen the weakened area whilst simultaneously promoting long-term stability by acting as a scaffold for new tissue growth. It is most commonly used in pelvic organ prolapse, urinary stress incontinence and hernia repairs. Capromesh meshesPartially absorbableThe sterile partially absorbable composite mesh is made from two components: an absorbable and non-absorbable.Capromesh composed of an absorbable segmented copolymer of glycolide and ε−caprolactone and non-absorbable polypropylene monofilament fiber. After absorption of the absorbable part, only the polypropylene mesh remains in the body.

The structure and the size of this remaining mesh are optimally designed for the physiological stress, which the abdominal wall is subject to.
