What to doSurfers do a hand gesture called the shaka when they’ve caught a great wave

andwanttoshowhowhappytheyare.Showeveryone in your unit your best shaka – stretch yourlittlefingerandthumboutandtuckallyourotherfingersaway.

Now,you’regoingtopractisethe pop-uptechniqueforgettinguponto

a surfboard.

Pop-up technique

• Layflatonyourfrontwithyourelbowsbenteithersideofyourribs,palmsofyourhandsonthefloor.

• Pushontothepalmsofyourhands,liftyourheadandarchyourbackslowly,keepingyour elbows bent.

• Pushontothepalmsofyourhandstostraighten your arms and bend both your knees.

• Bringonefootforwardbetweenyourhands.

• Standupbystraighteningyourbackleg.

• Bendyourkneesandputtheheelofyourback leg to the ground.

• Turnyourbackfootoutwardstohelp you balance.

Try it this way Start from your knees instead of laying down.

Now,layonyourfrontandpretendtopaddle.Whenyourleadercalls

‘Wave’,dothepop-uptechniquetogetintoposition.Onceyou’reup,showeveryoneyour shaka to let them know you caught that wave.

Movearoundyourspace.Yourleaderwillcalloutsomenewmoves.You’ll

needtoreactfastoryou’llbewipedout!

Surfing moves

• Helicopter–pop-up,spininacircle,thengetbackintoyourbalanceposition.

• Hangten–pop-upandbringbothfeettothe very front of your surfboard.

• Air–pop-up,jump,thengobacktoyourbalanceposition.

• Sharkattack–jumpoffyoursurfboardandgettothesafesideofyourspace.Choose one wall to be your safe wall.

Playthegameagain,butthistimeyou’re going to have to beat the

sharks!Thelastgirltothewallduringashark attack becomes a shark.

Sharkshavetokeepmovingaroundthespacewiththeirhandontheirheadlikeafin.Whenyourleadercalls‘Sharkattack!’,sharks must try to tag someone before they get to the safe wall. Sharks can also get surferswhodothewrongmove.Everyonetaggedbyasharkbecomesashark.Who’llbethelastsurfersurfing?
