•Initial analysis
•Identification of knowledge sources
•Planning of Knowledge Acquisition
Analysis of the domain
•Knowledge elicitation (document analysis and interviews)
•Knowledge modeling
Model definition and
implementation
•Encoding of the Knowledge Model
•Implementation of relevant forms
•Loading of documents, data, etc.
System implementation
• Early phases of domain analysis and knowledge elicitation
• Early architectural choices to face requirements: a CMS (Drupal 7) was adopted to assure– minimal user requirements
(both technical and conceptual)
– rapid development of a solid web portal
– openness to Semantic Web or LOD perspectives

• Ontologies and Semantic Web technologies often used to
– define and implement a comprehensive knowledge model for integration and sharing
– enable “intelligent fruition”, by means of semantic queries
• CIDOC CRM
– ISO standard model for concepts and relationships used in Cultural Heritage documentation
– well documented and increasingly adopted
– currently being integrated with other widely diffused standards
– available implementations using KR/Semantic Web languages

Navigation Paths in Action
![Page 17: Supporting Valorization of Cultural Heritage Documentation: TIVal Approach](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052400/559838791a28ab47628b4666/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
VSMM2012 – Milano – Sept. 5, 2012
• TIVal portal development almost complete– Documents are being loaded, annotated and described by the
research groups
• The Knowledge Elicitation phase was probably the most demanding– TIVal is a highly interdisciplinary project (different vocabularies, aims,
practices...)
• Document loading and annotation also not so simple– It is an additional activity...– ... specifying values and relationships can be problematic...– ... and developing input forms for semantic annotations is not simple
• The definition of template navigation paths essentially employs simple queries but grants– a dynamic exploitation of newly loaded and annotated documents– the possibility to avoid the need of statically a-priori guided navigation
paths
Discussion
![Page 18: Supporting Valorization of Cultural Heritage Documentation: TIVal Approach](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052400/559838791a28ab47628b4666/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
VSMM2012 – Milano – Sept. 5, 2012
• TIVal portal will soon grant an organized navigation of heterogeneous documents produced by different research groups
• The effectiveness (from the perspective of user experience) of navigation paths in supporting fruition will be then evaluated
• The developed knowledge model is general but this should be proved by applying it in different cultural heritage contexts
• The ontology based approach to knowledge modeling can be suitably employed also when adopting a standard CMS...– ... and this approach could be an effective way to actually
produce semantically annotated data
Conclusions and Future Works
