WEDNESDAY EVENING CONFESSIONS will resume on Wednesday, August 21.

August: Month of the Immaculate Heart (by Monique Sammut)

In Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame, Esmerelda finds refuge in the Church of Notre Dame. There, she sees a statue of Our Lady and softly sings: “I don’t know if you can hear me, or if you’re even there. I don’t know if you would listen to a gypsy’s prayer. Yes, I know I’m just an outcast. I shouldn’t speak to you. Still, I see your face and wonder…were you once an outcast too?”

August is the month dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Like Esmerelda, we might be tempted to conclude that because Our Lady was sinless, she is too perfect, too detached from our human condition to really know our pain and share our sorrows. However, we can “send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears,” and know that they DO reach the tender, human heart of Our Lady, comforter of the afflicted and refuge of sinners. Mary became our mother as she stood at the foot of the Cross, and she remains with each one of us as we struggle under the weight of our own crosses.

Helen Steiner Rice beautifully wrote, “A mother’s love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking. It never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking.” Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart breaks whenever we choose to reject Jesus through sin, and yet, she NEVER stops loving us, holding her arms out to us, begging us to repent. She longs to take us in her arms and lead us to Jesus, but we must be willing to give her our hands as trusting children. Padre Pio said, “In times of darkness, holding the Rosary is like holding your Blessed Mother’s hand,” and through the Rosary, through the First Saturday Devotion, and through many other acts of love and prayer, we can allow Mary to gently lead us back to her Son.

During this month of August, we can be assured that Our Blessed Mother is there beside each one of us, helping us through the changes, the difficulties, and the struggles, and rejoicing at our successes, joys, and triumphs.
