Watering ReminderRemember: St. Louis Park’s sprinkling ordinance does not allow sprinkling between noon and 6 p.m. Before noon and after 6 p.m., the city follows an odd-even system: sprinkle on even days if your address is an even number; sprinkle on odd days if your address is an odd number.

Our Community Helps Our Residents

ACT on Alzheimer’sACT on Alzheimer’s St. Louis Park inspires all citizens to take ACTion to create an inclusive and supportive dementia-friendly community by increasing knowledge, raising awareness and understanding of how the disease affects our community. For the past two years our ACTion team has been working toward helping St. Louis Park become dementia-friendly. We created an ACTion Plan that included two items: 1) To improve the lives of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias, 2) To raise awareness and reduce stigma of Alzheimer’s disease. We provided training for all of the local St. Louis Park nursing homes, assisted living and memory care facilities to help professional caregiver provide higher quality of care for people living in those facilities. We trained over 100 people with this training. In our awareness campaign we hosted a screening for the movie Still Alice and over 300 people attended. We created Book Club Kits with the book Still Alice and they were housed in 10 locations in the community. We placed two books in all of the registered Little Free Libraries in St. Louis Park and had 100 percent distribution of those books. We hosted an event with the St. Louis Park Public Library. Bring it HomeStarting a new school year, wondering if your child’s needs will be met, and navigating a system that doesn’t speak your language can be overwhelming and stressful. The Bring it Home program provides English language learning families with community connections, support and resources. In addition families learn strategies to help their children with reading and math at home. The initiative started as a small grant four years ago at Peter Hobart as an outreach to Spanish speaking second grade families to foster deeper home/school connections. The authentic connections that were formed were so successful that the following year, through the help of the St. Louis Park Schools Foundation, the program grew to include Somali families. Bring it Home has now developed into a districtwide program available for all K-5 families at all of St. Louis Park Public Schools’ elementary sites. All elementary schools will be focusing on providing each family with access and explanations about the school system, structures and community resources aiming to bring more of English language learning families to leadership roles in the schools. The Bring it Home program aims to engage and empower English language learning families. Bring it Home focuses on creating an open, collaborative and safe environment for families and staff to create partnerships. The first six weeks of school, families will meet once a week and continue gathering four to six times later in the school year to discuss topics such as the importance of reading, picking the right books and fluency tests. “It’s about breaking down our education system and making it accessible to all families. We strive to create an equal partnership between staff, teachers and families so that our kids can be as successful as possible,” said Peter Hobart’s Second Grade teacher Meghan Malone. During the 2016-17 school year, the program will work on providing even more community events and outreach to build community support throughout St. Louis Park.

Central ClinicWhether a high school athlete has to turn in a sports physical form next week, or a Kindergarten student needs to take a strep test to go back to school, Central Clinic ensures there is a place for young people to go for care. Central Clinic provides free health care to youth

who live in or attend school in either St. Louis Park or Hopkins starting as young as infancy and going through high school. Free services include well-baby checks, sports and camp physicals, sexual health care and treatment for acute illnesses. “Our mission is to partner with the community to help children and adolescents reach their full potential by providing barrier-free quality healthcare services,” said Central Clinic Medical Director, Mary Wagner, M.D. The clinic is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1-4:30 p.m. from August through the school year, except school holidays. No appointment is needed. Patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. The clinic does not ask for or take insurance. A parent consent from must be on file at the clinic for most services and can be downloaded at: www.slpschools.org/centralclinic. Interpreters can be arranged by calling ahead at (952) 993-1100. Low-cost dental care is provided by Children’s Dental Services (CDS) at Central Clinic the second Monday of each month throughout the year. CDS serves patients from birth to 21 years of age and pregnant women, providing a full-range of services including cleanings, X-Rays, fillings and extractions. CDS offers a sliding fee scale. Appointments are required for dental care and can be made by calling (612) 746-1530. Interpreters are also available through CDS.Central Clinic is located in Central Community Center at 6300 Walker Street and has its own entrance on the north side of the building off 35th Street. The clinic was created through a partnership between Park Nicollet Health Services, St. Louis Park Public Schools and Children First. Children FirstSay hello to a teen employee at the local grocery store. Smile when walking past families on the sidewalk. Children First wants community members to understand the large impact seemingly small actions can have on the healthy development of young people. The initiative is based on the 40 Developmental Assets that address the relationships, experiences and expectations that young people need in their lives. Children First is an initiative encouraging all adults to model these positive attributes to young people in the St. Louis Park community.Children First was founded more than two decades ago by a partnership among the business, education, health, city and faith communities. The focus is to translate the 40 Developmental Assets into action. Assets are commonsense, positive qualities that influence the choices young people make. Studies show the more assets young people possess, the better. Young people with lots of assets are more successful in school, volunteer in the community and live a healthier lifestyle. Young people with lots of assets are also less likely to partake in risk behaviors. The assets focus on support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies and positive identity. “The St. Louis Park community has been unwavering in making young people a top priority,” said Children First Coordinator Karen Atkinson. “The philosophy comes to life among the 250 Asset Champions who have been trained and determine their owns asset-building endeavors, either individually or through the organizations they represent.” You can become involved by participating in asset training. The initiative also sponsors activities including the annual Children First Ice Cream Social in May and the Champions Breakfast. For a list of the 40 Developmental Assets, stories about others building them, and information about upcoming events visit: children-first.org or facebook.com/ChildrenFirstSLPLearn more about Children First at children-first.org.
