theirwealthincreasebyover$98.5billion,or30percent,overthelast10months,basedonForbesdata,evenasmillionsof fanshave fallen ill, lostjobs,nearedeviction,gonehungryanddiedduetothecoronavirus.

• The $98.5 billion wealth gain by 64 sports franchise billionaires sinceMarch2020couldpay for a stimulus checkof $1,400 forover70millionAmericans—almost half of the roughly 150 million people who will beeligibleunderthepandemicreliefplanproposedbyPresidentBiden

• These billionaire owners include the AFC championKansas City Chiefs’Hunt family, worth $6.3 billion, and the NFC champion Tampa BayBuccaneers’Glazerfamily,worth$1.7billion.

• The64billionairesportsbaronshadacombinedwealthof$426billiononJanuary29,2021,upfrom$326billiononMarch18,2020,roughlythestartof thepandemic lockdowns. (The increasein totalbillionairewealth fromMarch to Januarywas$100billionbuthasbeenadjusted to$98.5billionbecauseonebillionaireonlyreachedthatstatusinJanuary2021.)

• Overthepastfiveyears,thecollectivewealthofthese64sportsbillionairesshotup$165billion,or67percent.Theircombinedwealthof$247billioninMarch2016hadgrownto$426billionbyJanuary29ofthisyear.

• Over the past several decades, according to data maintained by Field ofSchemes,28pro sports teamsownedby26billionaireshave received$9billion in taxpayersubsidies.These26billionaireshaveseen theirwealthincreaseover$45billionsinceMarch2020.(Ninebillionairesonthelistin2021 were not billionaires in 2016 accounting for the $14 billiondiscrepancy.)

• TheKansas City Chiefs received $250million in taxpayer subsidies forstadiumrenovationsin2006.Taxpayersprovidedatotalof$218millioninsubsidies for construction and renovation of the Buccaneer stadium in1998and2015.

• Thewealth increasesofbillionaire sports-teamowners is justpartof thedominanceofanationaldynastyof661U.S.billionaireswhosewealthhasgrownby$1.2trillion,or40percent,duringthepandemic,climbing from$2.9trilliononMarch18,2020,to$4.13trillion,asofJanuary29,2021.

THEBILLIONAIRESPORTSBARONSNomatterwhowinsSuperBowlLV,thebigwinnersinourCOVID-ravagedeconomyincludedozensofbillionairesports-teamowners.

SixtyU.S. billionaires—roughly one in ten of the country’s total billionaires—ownoneormoremajorleagueprofessionalsportsteamsintheNationalFootballLeague(NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), andNational Hockey League (NHL). Four other billionaires—three from Canada andonefromGermany—ownfouradditionalteams.

These 64 billionaires, who together own or co-own 68 professional sportsfranchises, had a combined wealth of $426 billion on January 29, 2021, up from$326billiononMarch18,2020,accordingtoForbesdataanalyzedbytheInstitutefor Policy Studies (IPS) andAmericans forTax Fairness (ATF). This $98.5 billionsurgeinwealthwasa30%jump.[SeeTable2inAppendix](TheincreaseintotalbillionairewealthfromMarchtoJanuarywas$100billionbut isadjustedto$98.5billion becauseone billionaire, the Glazer family were new to the list in January2021.)

Last March is when the nation’s emergency response to the deadly virus threwprofessional sports alongwith the rest of society into turmoil. Thousands of low-paid stadium and arena workers lost their jobs or were furloughed as sportsseasonswerecancelledandcurtailed.

The$98.5billionwealthgainby64sports-franchisebillionairessinceMarch2020couldpayfor:

• Astimuluscheckof$1,400forover70millionAmericans—almosthalfof theroughly150millionpeoplewhowillbeeligibleunderthepandemicreliefplanproposedbyPresidentBiden.

• Morethanone-thirdofthe$290billioncostofproviding$400-a-week supplements to existing unemployment benefits throughSeptember, as proposed by President Biden in his COVID rescueplan.

This$98.5billionwealthwindfallforsportsbaronsissimilartothewealthgainsofthewhole U.S. billionaire class sincemid-March. (See data here.) Additional jointresearchonbillionairewealthbyATFandtheIPSisavailablehere.

Overthepastfiveyears,thecollectivewealthofthesesportsbillionairesshotupby$165billion,or67percent,growingfrom$247billioninMarch2016to$426billionas of this January 29. ThoughonlyoneoftheirteamswilllifttheLombardyTrophyasSuperBowlchampsthisyear,boththeChiefs’Huntfamily—specifically,RayLeeHuntandW.HerbertHunt—and the Bucs’ Glazer family will continue their long reigns among thenation’sbiggesteconomicwinners.TheHunts’networthisestimatedbyForbesat$6.3 billion, up $482million during the COVID crisis. TheBuc’s Glazer family isworthanestimated$1.7billion,accordingtoWealth-X.

Thewealthincreasesofbillionairesportsteamownersisjustpartofthedominanceof a national dynasty of 661 U.S. billionaires whose wealth has grown by $1.18trillion,or40percent,duringthepandemic,climbingfrom$2.9trilliononMarch18,2020,to$4.13trillion,asofJanuary29,2021(fullbillionairedataavailablehere).

The surging stock market and lock-down economy has been a boon to techmonopolies and helped createdmultiple U.S. “centi-billionaires.” Jeff Bezos, ElonMusk,andBillGateswereeachworthmorethan$100billiononJanuary29,2021.Priorto2020,BezoshadbeentheonlyU.S.centi-billionaire,reachingthatmilestonein 2018. Bezos and other billionaires have experienced eye-popping increases inwealthoverthelast10months:

• Elon Musks’s wealth grew by over $156.4 billion, from $24.6billiononMarch18,2020to$181billiononJanuary29th,anearlyeight-fold increase, boosted by his ownership interest in Tesla.The$181billiongrowthinwealthisalmosteighttimesthe$23.3billionFY2021budgetofNASA,thefederalagencythatMuskhascredited with saving this company with a big federal contractwhenthefirmsrocketswerefailinganditfacedbankruptcy.

• JeffBezos’swealthgrewfrom$113billiononMarch18to$188.6billion,anincreaseof67percent.Addinginhisex-wifeMacKenzieScott’swealthof$57billioninJanuary29,thetwohadacombinedwealth of almost a quarter of a trillion dollars thanks to theirownershipofAmazon.IfBezos’s$75billiongrowthinwealthwasdistributed to all his 810,000 U.S. employees, each would get awindfallbonusof$85,000andBezoswouldbenolessrichthanhewas10monthsago.

• MarkZuckerberg’swealthgrewfrom$54.7billiononMarch18to $97 billion, an increase of over 77 percent fueled by hisownershipofFacebook.

• ThreemembersoftheWaltonFamily—Alice,JimandRob—haveseentheircombinedwealthincreasebyover$38billioninthe10monthssinceMarch2020,throughtheirownershipofretailgiantWal-Mart.TheirtotalcombinedwealthonJanuary29thwasover$201billion.

Overthepastseveraldecades,accordingtodatamaintainedbyFieldofSchemes,28prosportsteamsownedby26billionaireshavereceived$9billionintaxpayersubsidiestohelpbuildorupdatestadiumsandarenasandmakeotherinvestmentsbillionairescouldpresumablyaffordontheirown.Thesepubliclysubsidizedteamownershaveseentheirwealthincrease$45billioninthelast10months[SeeTable1].

That public largesse for billionaire sports barons has included both teams in thisyear’s Super Bowl. The Chiefs received $250 million in taxpayer subsidies forstadium renovations in 2006. Taxpayers provided a total of $218 million insubsidies for construction and renovationof theBuccaneer stadium in1998 and2015.

“Every year, wealthy sports team owners rake in more than twobilliondollarsintaxpayersubsidiesfornewstadiumsandarenasthat,accordingtoinnumerableeconomicstudies,providezeromeasurableeconomic benefit to the public. Letting billionaire owners socializetheir costs and privatize their profits has allowed the rich to getricher,whilestarvinglocalgovernmentsofrevenuetopayforschoolsandothergenuinepublicneeds.”

Atlanta Falcons: Owner Arthur Blank, co-founder of the Home Depot, saw hiswealth increase 35 percent sincemid-March 2020, shooting up $1.6 billion from$4.6billionto$6.2billion.Overthelastfiveyears,Blank’swealthhasincreased$3.6billion, or 139 percent. The Falcons received a $700 million taxpayer subsidy in2016forstadiumconstructionandfutureupgradecosts.

BuffaloBills:TheBills,wholosttotheChiefsintheAFCchampionship,areownedbyTerrencePegula,whoseestimatedwealthof$5.1billionwasbuiltonfossilfuelsandrealestate.Inthelastfiveyears,Pegula’swealthhasincreasedby$1.1billion,or27.4percent.

LosAngelesRams:AnnWaltonKroenke,whoinadditiontotheRamsco-ownstheNBA’sDenverNuggetsandNHL’sColoradoAvalanche,isanheiressfromtheWal-Mart Walton clan. Over the last five years, Kroenke’s wealth has more thandoubled,from$4.5billionto$9billion.SinceMarch2020,herwealthhasincreased$1.1billion.

NATIONALBASKETBALLASSOCIATION

Atlanta Hawks: Private-equitymogul Antony Ressler, owner of theHawks, hasseenhiswealth increase $2.8 billion or 259percent sinceMarch2016, from$1.1billiontoalmost$4billiononJanuary29,2021.Hiswealthhasrisen$1.2billionor46percentinjustthetenmonthssincethepandemicbeganinmid-March2020.In2017, the Hawks received $142 million in taxpayer subsidies for renovations totheirarena.

Brooklyn Nets: Joseph Tsai, theCanadianbillionaireownerof theNets, sawhiswealth increase $8 billion over the last five years, an increase of 190 percent.Duringthelast10monthsofthepandemic,hiswealthincreased$2.2billionor22percent,from$10billiononMarch18,2020to$12.2billiononJanuary29,2021.

ClevelandCavaliers:QuickenLoanscofounderandCavaliersownerDanGilberthasseenhiswealthjumpaneye-popping589percentsincemid-March2020.That$38.3billionboost inhis fortune isoneof thebiggestpercentage increasesofanyAmericanbillionaire.TheCavaliersreceiveda$70milliontaxpayersubsidyin2017forarenarenovations.

LosAngelesClippers:MicrosoftpioneerandClippersownerSteveBallmer,hasseenhiswealthincrease$27billionsincemid-March2020,ariseofover51percent.Overthelastfiveyears,hiswealthhasincreased$56billionor240percent.

His wealth more than doubled, up$10.1billionor144percent,duringthefirsttenmonthsofthepandemic.Overthepastfiveyears,Pera’swealthhasincreasedmorethaneight-fold,from$2billionto$17.1billion.

Not every billionaire team owner has enjoyed a leap in their fortune during thepandemic.GlenTaylor,ownerofaprivateprintingandelectronicscompanyandoftheNBA’sMinnesotaTimberwolves,hasseenhiswealthdeclineby$430millioninthelast10months,from$2.9billionto$2.46billion.Butoverthelastfiveyearshiswealth increased$669million,or37percent.TheTimberwolves received$74millionintaxpayersubsidiesin2017forarenarenovations.

OneTeamDefinitivelyNOTOwnedbyABillionaire

The Green Bay Packers, who lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFCchampionship, are owned by the citizens of Green Bay, the only professionalfranchisetobecollectivelyownedbyitsfans.

OrdinaryAmericanshavenotfaredaswellasthebillionairebaronsofprofessionalsportsduringthepandemic:

• 26millionhavefallenillwiththevirusand441,000havediedfromit.[JohnsHopkinsCoronavirusResourceCenter]

• Collectiveworkincomeofrank-and-fileprivate-sectoremployees—allhoursworkedtimesthehourlywagesoftheentirebottom82%oftheworkforce—declined by 1% in real terms from mid-March to mid-December,accordingtoBureauofLaborStatisticsdata.

• Almost74million lostworkbetweenMar.21and Jan.2,2021. [U.S.DepartmentofLabor]

• 18 million were collecting unemployment on Jan. 9, 2021. [U.S.DepartmentofLabor]

• Nearly100,000businesseshavepermanentlyclosed.[Yelp/CNBC]

• 12 million workers have likely lost employer-sponsored healthinsurance during the pandemic as of August 26, 2020. [EconomicPolicyInstitute]

• Some 24 million adults reported between Jan. 6-18 that theirhouseholdhadnothadenoughfoodinthepastweek.FromDec.9-21,between9and12millionchildrenlivedinahouseholdwherekidsdidnot eat enoughbecause thehousehold couldnot afford to fully feedthem.[CenteronBudget&PolicyPriorities(CBPP),Table1].

• Over 15 million adults—1 in 5 renters—reported in January beingbehindintheirrent.[CBPP,Table3]

Becauseoflong-standingracialandgenderdisparities,low-wageworkers,peopleofcolor and women have suffered disproportionately in the combined medical andeconomiccrisesofthepast10months.Latinosaremorelikelytobecomeinfectedwith Covid-19 and Blacks to die from the disease than are white people. Team-ownerbillionairesarealmostexclusivelywhitemen.

RECOMMENDATION:RestoreTaxFairnessTaxreformthatensures thewealthyand thecorporations theyownpay their fairshare—theprinciplePresidentBiden’staxplanisbuilton—wouldtransformagoodchunk of those huge billionaire gains into public revenue to help heal a hurtingnation.Butgettingatthatbigboostinbillionairefortunesisnotassimpleasraisingtaxrates:taxruleslettherichdelay,diminishandevenultimatelyavoidanytaxonthe growth in their wealth.What’s needed is structural change to howwealth istaxed,inadditiontootherchangesbrieflydescribedbelow.

Treat Income Generated from Wealth Like Income from Wages. A gapingloophole in the current tax system must be closed. It allows a lot of incomegenerated fromwealth—stockdividends,and thegains fromthesaleof stockandotherassetslikerealestateoraprivatebusiness—tobetaxedatamuchlowertoprate(20%)thanincomefromwagesandsalaries(37%).Forthisloopholeclosuretobeeffective,however,itisalsoimportanttocloseanotheronethatletsthewealthypass appreciated assets on to their heirs without paying taxes on the increasedvalueofthoseassets.

InstituteSomeFormofaWealthTax.Themostdirectapproachtocombattingtheoutsizedpowerandprivilegeofbillionaires isanannualwealthtaxonthebiggestfortunes, proposed by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, amongothers. Another option is the annual taxation of investment gains on stocks andothertradableassets,anideaadvancedbythenewSenateFinanceCommitteechair,RonWyden.Evenunderthecurrentdiscountedtaxratesforinvestmentincome,ifWyden’splanhadbeenineffectin2020America’sbillionairesportsownerswouldbe paying billions of dollars in extra taxes this spring thanks to their gargantuanpandemicprofitslastyear.

RestoreaRobustEstateTax. Sportsdynastiesarebuiltoncontinuedhardworkandcommitmenttoexcellence,buteconomicdynastiesafterthefirstgenerationarejust a matter of pure dumb luck. Since inherited fortunes undermine Americanidealsofself-relianceandequalopportunity,weneedarobustestatetaxtocurbtheaccumulationofdynasticwealth.Sportsfranchisesstayedinthesamefamilyhandsforgenerationsevenwhenestatetaxesweremuchhigherthantoday.

Increase the Corporate Income Tax Rate. Corporations are owned byshareholders,whoareoverwhelminglywealthyandwhite.That’swhythecorporateincometaxisamongthemostprogressiveinthetaxcode.Butthe2017Trump-GOPtax cuts slashed the corporate tax rate by 40%, dropping the rate to 21%,whilemaintainingandevenstrengtheningseveralbigloopholes.Thefirstyearofthelaw,over90profitablecorporationspaid zero federal income taxes.Thecorporate taxrateneedstohikedsignificantlyandloopholesclosed.
