Education: Sungji studied composition at the Hanyang University in Seoul and subsequently completed her MMus at the Royal Academy of Music in London and her PhD in composition with Nicola LeFanu at the University of York in the UK. She has participated in various workshops and masterclasses such as Voix Nouvelles (Royaumont) and in Darmstadt where she studied with Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Theo Loevendie, Tristan Murail and Toshio Hosokawa, as well as the International Mastercourse and Workshop for conductors and composers with Peter Eötvös and Zsolt Nagy in Herrenhaus Edenkoben. 45 distinctions: Sungji has received 45 distinctions for her compositions: First Prize (13), Second Prize (3), Third Prize (2), Honorable Mention (6), Finalist (5), grants (7) and scholarships (9). Sungji Hong received a Young Artist Grant (2007) to give her portrait concert with Ensemble TIMF from Arts Council Korea, Project Grant from the New Music USA (2015) to write a new piece and several travel grants from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Germany (2011), France (2010) and Ireland (2009) to attend concert series, portrait concert and festivals. While she was studying in England, she received a travel grant from the PRS Foundation and British Council. Also she has received full grants (course fee, Lodging and meals) to attend the International

Mastercourse and Workshop in Herrenhaus (2009) and the 41st Darmstadt International Summer Course (2002) in Germany. 28 commissions: Fromm Music Foundation (Harvard University, USA), the National Flute Association (NFA), MATA Festival (USA), the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (Korea), the Keumho Asiana Cultural Foundation (Korea), International Isang Yun Music Society (Germany) and others. There were collaborations with the Korea Foundation, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Greece, the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in Korea, the Korea-Greece Friendship Association in Korea, the Michael Cacoyannis Theater and the Ensemble Tongyeoung International Music Festival. I raised funds for flight tickets (from Korea to Greece), hotels and performance fees for the musicians.

[Kiklos] Sungji’s orchestral ballet score Kiklos was awarded the First Prize at the International Competition for Original Ballet Music during the ISCM World

Music Days, Slovenia in October 2003. The First Prize winner’s work was performed by the Slovenian National Ballet (choreographer: Stasa Zurovac)

eight times at the National Theatre Opera and Ballet in Ljubljana. Kiklos depicts the four seasons and each season is represented by a different color.

[Deconstructing Joy] Sungji has collaborated with Professor Kim Giblisco. Deconstructing Joy is about a journey of one woman’s search for inner peace as she struggles with ego and alter ego states. Deconstructing Joy was choreographed and performed by Kim Giblisco upon Agnus Dei composed, by Sungji Hong: it was performed five times at the Edinburgh Booking Dance Festival in the UK (August 2012), three times at the Joyce SoHo in New York (April 2007) and at the University of Wisconsin (April 2007).
