For Everyone | I Judge Not | Luke 6:37-42

37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; for-

give, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed

down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it

will be measured back to you.” 39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind

man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone

when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your

brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your

brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see

the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then

you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.”

Study Questions: Judge Not | Luke 6:37-42

1) Name as many famous judges as you can.

2) In chapter 6:37 we read, “Judge not…”

a) What does this mean in our culture?

b) Our society hasn’t always taken such a hard stance against “judging.” How do you think we got here?

c) We learn that Jesus doesn ’t forbid all judgments, just bad ones (e.g. John 7:24). Where do you see Jesus encouraging us to make moral evaluations about people and behaviors?

3) Read verse 41. Jesus asks (in so many words), “Why is it that you are blind to your faults (though they are huge), and yet have High Definition vision of other’s faults (though they are small)?

a) How would you answer Jesus ’ question?

b) Give a situation where factoring in our self-serving vision is important for getting at righteousness.

4) In verse 42, Jesus says that we can sometimes be “hypocrites” or “actors” when we judge, perhaps because we pretend we’re motivated by righteousness rather than inferior considera-tions.

a) Share with the group a personal or Biblical example of where the issue was really personal rather than a matter of principle (though it was presented otherwise).

b) What are some everyday relationships that we have to guard against making things personal and acting like their principled?

5) In verse 42, Jesus speaks about getting to the place where you can help others remove what’s wrong in their lives.

a) How is this like Jesus (c.f. 39)?

b) Read the following verses and talk about the importance of love in addressing peo-ple’s failures (e.g. Galatians 6:1-2, Leviticus 19:17-18; Psalm 141:5).

6) In Matthew 5:6, Jesus seems to be saying that there are times when it’s best not to address people’s faults (c.f., Proverbs 9:7-8). When do you find yourself unnecessarily defensive and un-willing to receive feedback from people, and how might that help you with figuring out who and when you should give feedback to?
