The Shepherd’s Perspective “The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” (John 10:1-21)

As a follow-up to the beautiful liturgies we experienced on New Year's Day coupled with The Feast of the Holy Family, I want to draw your attention to what Sr. Lucia, one of the visionaries who, as a child, witnessed the apparitions of our Lady of Fatima back in the year 1917; in the late ‘80s, she wrote a letter to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, the President of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, in which she said:

St Patrick’s 2019 Christmas Hamper Program Report On Saturday, December 21, St. Patrick’s Parish delivered 130 Christmas Hampers including food and gifts to individuals and families in the subdivisions covered by our St. Patrick’s Conference of SSVP. Some notable facts follow.

• Recipients ranged from single souls to households with as many as thirteen occupants and included almost 500 individuals, of which approximately 50% were children aged 17 years and under.

• Nine of our separate schools in the parish donated food, gifts and funds or combinations thereof.

• Sufficient gifts were received from parish donations via the Christmas Tree Tags and from the area schools, with a small surplus of remaining gifts which were passed on to the Magic of Christmas program.

• Christmas Hamper Funds received exceeded the amount required to prepare the hampers, resulting in a surplus of $16,000. The excess funds will again be used by SSVP St Patrick’s to support the expected requests for assistance in 2020, and to support other SSVP conferences in the city of Calgary who are not blessed with the same financial resources as St. Patrick’s.

• Bishop O’Byrne High School and Cardel Rec South allowed us to use their facility to stage the hamper delivery at no cost.

• 121 drivers delivered 130 hampers on Saturday December 21st.

Again, a remarkable demonstration of parish and community Christian Stewardship. Beyond the funds and gift donations were examples like RCIA assembly of boxes, parishioners assisting with the Thursday and Friday set-up and packing, the 207th Scout Venturers hamper loading assistance, and the delivery drivers. Our suppliers - Woodbine Safeway and Sobey’s Millrise – were great partners. A Tim Horton’s franchisee supplied coffee and sticky buns for our workers and volunteers for all three days. Once again, our Pastor, Fr. Jerome and our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Poul have been great advocates of the program, and Mary and the office staff are great supports. God’s work in helping our friends and neighbours was done by all of you, the Stewards of St Patrick’s. May we continue to be blessed in 2020!

St. Patrick’s CWL: Faith Moves Us to Charity & Action!

January 2020

In Charity

St. Patrick’s CWL has been a proud, 30-year

supporter of Save a Family Plan, an international aid

organization headquartered in London, Ontario. The

charity is a gold standard when it comes to assisting

families in the developing nation of India. The

benefactor or sponsor family in Canada commits to

funding a family in India for 6 years at a cost of

$264 per year or $22/month.

With support, supervision and direction from the

SFP staff at the India office, the Indian families go

from financial and emotional instability to a secure

future for themselves and their children. It truly is

marvelous to witness the independence and self-

reliance that blossoms for these families. My

husband Doug and I had the good fortune to visit St.

Partricks’s CWL adopted family: Jenitha, and her

children Josephin and Joyal. If you would like more

information about Save a Family Plan, please

contact me at: [email protected].

In Action As part of our Advent preparation we planned a parish-

wide outreach program—Brown Bagging for Calgary’s

Kids (BB4CK)—which will start in our parish on the 6th

of January. BB4CK is an organization that helps over

4,000 students in our city receive lunches which they

would otherwise go without. With the generous support

of our parishioners, we hope to reduce child hunger in our

community one lunch at a time.

Our Parish community will start by preparing lunches in

our kitchen every Monday and Wednesday for one school

in the neighbourhood.

CWL Members Debbie Pariag and Paulette Reid help prepare healthy lunches.

The need is ever-growing, and we will expand as the

need arises. We also ran a Snack Drive on the

weekend of December 14–15, 2019, as part of this

project. We had an overwhelming response from our

parish family and after leaving enough snacks for our

own project we were able to send the rest to the

downtown office of Brown Bagging.

Our next step is a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day and

the donations will go to support this worthy cause. If

you are interested in knowing more about this worthy

organization, please visit Brown Bagging for

Calgary’s Kids at https://bb4ck.org/.
