CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON
Sunday Bulletin – 12th January 2020
1st Sunday of Epiphany
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services.
There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites,
Where was their fight?”. This was a question aimed at the New Zealand cricket team that got trounced by Australia recently. Losing to a better side is one thing but complete capitulation is another. They had no fight!
We are starting a brand new year and a brand new decade. We need “to fight” to maintain and extend God honouring principles.
The word fight has many negative connotations as people think of war. However, an old hymn talks about “fighting the good fight with all thy might”. Fights are engaging and can be helpful and positive. It can be a colloquial word used in such a way to fight for your honour, to fight for your reputation, to fight for your marriage, to fight to keep your job, to fight to beat alcoholism. In his first book to the Corinthians Paul writes about “the many opportunities that exist in Ephesus along with a number of obstacles”. We see Paul and other New Testament characters engaged in a good fight for the kingdom of God.
I had a great meeting on Thursday with the newly formed Extended Communion Team (E.C.T.) whom I am gathering up and resourcing so they can take their part in leading Tuesday midweek Eucharistic services. You know that this Cathedral has a commun-ion service every day of the year. To maintain this we need to continually replenish the team. If you look at page 519 in the New Zealand prayer book you will see such a service led by “lay” people. I greatly admire our Cathedral priests; they are doing a magnificent job.
Last Friday I took communion at the Wood and met again with a number of Cathedral-ites who still take an active interest in our Cathedral.
I promised one of my great-nephews Jack a ride on a mountain bike track when he turned 15 so early in the week I took him up Old Codgers Track over to the Maitai Valley, keeping in mind my shoulder surgery which is imminent due to a mountain bike crash a few months ago. It was like the blind leading the blind!
It was lovely to meet up with far-flung friends from all over New Zealand and further afield during the last month here at the Cathedral as we hosted many visitors in our Cathedral.
LEAP Children’s Church will recommence on the
9th of February 2020.
ACTIVITY SHEETS for children in attendance until then can be
collected from the greeters at the entrance of the cathedral.

SERVICE INFORMATION: Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so EITHER by
intinction, i.e. retaining the wafer when it is given to you and then dipping it in the cup of wine before
consuming it OR by consuming the wafer when it is given to you and then drinking from the common
cup.
• Grape juice is available at communion.
• Gluten free wafers are available.
• Hearing Aid Loop available - please turn to the T position on your hearing aid ALSO
• Ramp for access to the Sanctuary (on the right side)
• Special chairs are available from the Pulpit side for those with disabilities or back problems.
Note that the leg height can be adjusted to suit.
HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE: Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or
associated symptoms are advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the wafer
or using the “Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit juice
alternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an
important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety
requirements. 2
This coming Tuesday I meet with the Cathedral Flower Festival team in anticipation of a grand flower festival beginning on February 13th through to Sunday 16th. People are telling me they plan to exhibit a bowl of flowers for the occasion. Patsy and I head off to Steward Island on Thursday 16th. We have never been there before so I am looking forward to being in the deep South. I will be taking a couple of services while there. On Friday 31st I will be in Hamilton along with the other Deans as Archdeacon Wendy Scott is being installed. Needless to say I am grateful for the grand work that all our Cathedral priests have done, are doing and will do in this amazing Cathedral of ours. Have a great week, fight the good fight.

1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my spirit upon him; he will
bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He
will not cry or lift up his voice, or make
it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed
he will not break, and a dimly burning
wick he will not quench; he will faith-
fully bring forth justice. 4 He will not
grow faint or be crushed until he has
established justice in the earth; and
the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who
created the heavens and stretched
them out, who spread out the earth
and what comes from it, who gives
breath to the people upon it and spirit
to those who walk in it: 6 I am
the LORD, I have called you in right-
eousness, I have taken you by the
hand and kept you; I have given you
as a covenant to the people, a light to
the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are
blind, to bring out the prisoners from
the dungeon, from the prison those
who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD,
that is my name; my glory I give to no
other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the
former things have come to pass, and
new things I now declare; before they
spring forth, I tell you of them.
34 Then Peter began to speak to them:
‘I truly understand that God shows no
partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone
who fears him and does what is right
is acceptable to him. 36 You know the
message he sent to the people of
Israel, preaching peace by Jesus
Christ—he is Lord of all. 37 That
message spread throughout Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John announced: 38 how God
anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the
Holy Spirit and with power; how he
went about doing good and healing all
who were oppressed by the devil, for
God was with him. 39 We are
witnesses to all that he did both in Ju-
dea and in Jerusalem. They put him to
death by hanging him on a tree; 40 but
God raised him on the third day and
allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the
people but to us who were chosen by
God as witnesses, and who ate and
drank with him after he rose from the
dead. 42 He commanded us to preach
to the people and to testify that he is
the one ordained by God as judge of
the living and the dead. 43 All the
prophets testify about him that
everyone who believes in him
receives forgiveness of sins through
his name.’
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he
went up the mountain; and after he sat
down, his disciples came to
him. 2 Then he began to speak, and
taught them, saying: 3 ‘Blessed are the
poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom

Matthew 5:1-12

of heaven. 4 ‘Blessed are those who
mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will
inherit the earth. 6 ‘Blessed are those
who hunger and thirst for righteous-
ness, for they will be filled.7 ‘Blessed
are the merciful, for they will receive
mercy. 8 ‘Blessed are the pure in
heart, for they will see God. 9 ‘Blessed
are the peacemakers, for they will be
called children of God. 10 ‘Blessed are
those who are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. 11 ‘Blessed are
you when people revile you and
persecute you and utter all kinds of
evil against you falsely on my
account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for
your reward is great in heaven, for in
the same way they persecuted the
prophets who were before you.
1 Early in the morning Joshua rose and
set out from Shittim with all the
Israelites, and they came to the
Jordan. They camped there before
crossing over. At the end of three
days the officers went through the
camp 3 and commanded the people,
‘When you see the ark of the covenant
of the LORD your God being carried by
the Levitical priests, then you shall set
out from your place. Follow it, 4 so that
you may know the way you should go,
for you have not passed this way
before. Yet there shall be a space
between you and it, a distance of
about two thousand cubits; do not
come any nearer to it.’ 5 Then Joshua
said to the people, ‘Sanctify
yourselves; for tomorrow the LORD will
do wonders among you.’ 6 To the
priests Joshua said, ‘Take up the ark
of the covenant, and pass on in front
of the people.’ So they took up the ark
of the covenant and went in front of
the people. 7 The LORD said to
Joshua, ‘This day I will begin to exalt
you in the sight of all Israel, so that
they may know that I will be with you
as I was with Moses. 8 You are the one
who shall command the priests who
bear the ark of the covenant, “When
you come to the edge of the waters of
the Jordan, you shall stand still in the
Jordan.” 14 When the people set out
from their tents to cross over the
Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of
the covenant were in
front of the people.
1 Now faith is the
assurance of things hoped for, the
conviction of things not seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors
received approval. 3 By faith we
understand that the worlds were
prepared by the word of God, so that
what is seen was made from things
that are not visible.4 By faith Abel
offered to God a more acceptable
sacrifice than Cain’s. Through this he
received approval as righteous, God
Joshua 3:1-8, 14
Hebrews 11:1-12
6
himself giving approval to his gifts; he
died, but through his faith he still
speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken so
that he did not experience death; and
‘he was not found, because God had
taken him.’ For it was attested before
he was taken away that ‘he had
pleased God.’ 6 And without faith it is
impossible to please God, for whoever
would approach him must believe that
he exists and that he rewards those
who seek him. 7 By faith Noah, warned
by God about events as yet unseen,
respected the warning and built an ark
to save his household; by this he
condemned the world and became an
heir to the righteousness that is in
accordance with faith.8 By faith
Abraham obeyed when he was called
to set out for a place that he was to
receive as an inheritance; and he set
out, not knowing where he was
going. 9 By faith he stayed for a time in
the land he had been promised, as in
a foreign land, living in tents, as did
Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with
him of the same promise. 10 For he
looked forward to the city that has
foundations, whose architect and
builder is God. 11 By faith he received
power of procreation, even though he
was too old—and Sarah herself was
barren—because he considered him
faithful who had promised. 12 There-
fore from one person, and this one as
good as dead, descendants were
born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven
and as the innumerable grains of sand
by the seashore.’

ST BARNABAS PRAYER – 12th January
Father in heaven, we pray today for our Christian brothers and sisters in North Korea, who live daily in extreme danger because of their love for Your Son. Fill them to overflowing with a peace that passes understanding and take away all fear from their hearts. For those in brutal prison labour camps, we ask that You give them grace to endure the heat, the cold, the hunger, the beatings and cruelty. May their patient fortitude be a witness that draws others to put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in Whose Name we pray. Amen.
