SUN P.E.T.S. PARTNERS WITH

SUN P.E.T.S. received a $13,500 grant from

PETCO Foundation in early 2013 to support spay,

neuter, and vaccination services for 191 homeless

cats throughout the Susquehanna Valley from

March through September 2013.

SUN P.E.T.S. continues to have numerous pre-

vious and new clients calling for help to spay, neu-

ter and vaccinate the remaining outside / homeless

cats as part of local TNR projects, and we are apply-

ing for additional grant funding for this ongoing ef-

fort.

These funds are now fully expended, and the

following accomplishments were achieved with the

support of the PETCO Foundation:

SUN P.E.T.S. UTILIZES PETCO FOUNDATION GRANT FOR HOMELESS CATS

69 male cats and 122 female cats received spay/neuter/vaccination services as part of several Trap – Neuter – Release (TNR) and rescue pro-jects throughout the region.

Services were provided by Keystone Mobile Vet-erinary Services (86 cats), Susquehanna Trail Ani-mal Hospital (58 cats), Lewisburg Veterinary Hos-pital (33 cats), and Selinsgrove Veterinary Hospi-tal (14 cats). These clinics provided services at minimal cost to extend the PETCO Foundation grant to as many homeless / TNR’d cats as possi-ble.

Rabies and FVRCP vaccinations and ear-tipping were included with each spay/neuter procedure.

Total cost of the project was $13,706.10, includ-ing the $13,500 grant dollars plus $206.10 from SUNP.E.T.S. to cover the overages.

We are so very grateful for the financial support provided by the PETCO Foundation. The impact and the goodwill generated by this project are immeasurable.

Doors open at 5 p.m. -- Dinner buffet starts at 5:30 p.m.

Country Cupboard - Tickets $25 Rt. 15 & Hafer Road, Lewisburg, PA

SUN P.E.T.S. volunteers are busy planning the Annual Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction. It will be held Saturday, February 22 at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg.

We always have a great selection of auction items thanks to the donations from our members, friends and supporters. These con-tributions make this fundraiser very successful and the proceeds help support our spay/neuter mission in our three county area. We are asking for donations of items for the auction. Here are some suggestions for auction items:

A handmade craft item

A fancy homemade baked good

An unused Christmas or Birthday gift that just isn't "you".

How about a Princess House or Longaberger item that is collecting dust in it's original box?

Gift cards or Gift Certificates

Monetary donations (SUN P,E,T.S. will purchase a basket)

In past years, we accepted individual basket items and our volun-teers assembled baskets. Unfortunately, we do not have the man-power to assemble baskets this year. To help defray the cost of

an entire basket, ask friends, relatives, or co-workers to work to-gether on a basket. Your donations are important to the success of this fundraiser.

If you're not really creative or inspired, below is a list of basket suggestions. We also include a "donated by” CARD on the item, so if you do have a business, your name will be displayed. You could also donate the basket in honor or memory of a loved one. There will also be raffles and drawings. Sponsors or donations for the basket of cheer or gift cards for the raffles are welcome. Be a sponsor and advertise your business. Thanks for your continued support and friendship as we work together to help control pet over population in our community.

SUN P.E.T.S. members were shocked and sad-dened to hear of the death of Dr. Matthew Murphy on September 22, 2013 when he fell from a roof. Dr. Murphy impacted so many lives – human and animal alike. He and his clinic staff at Keystone Mobile Vet-erinary Service made the long trip from Scotland, PA (near Chambersburg) to several SUN P.E.T.S. Mobile Clinic locations throughout the Susquehanna Valley every other month to provide low-cost spay, neuter, and vaccination services to pet and homeless cats. Along with his wife Brenda, 3 adult children, 6 grand-children and the mobile clinic staff who accompanied him on each trip, we mourn his loss.

Dr. Murphy will always be remembered for his kindness and compassion. He truly made a difference in the lives of people and animals. During his lifetime, the 55-year-old veterinarian was able to support so many rescue organizations, sanctuaries, TNR projects (and volunteers), and pet / property owners who have cared for, literally, thousands of animals. With his mo-bile surgical unit and 3 clinical staff, he provided ser-vices to several rescue and low-cost spay/neuter or-ganizations throughout Pennsylvania, including PAWS of Central Pennsylvania (in Camp Hill, PA), Kitz and Katz Animal Foundation in Hanover, PA, the No-body’s Cats Foundation, serving 8 counties in south-central Pennsylvania, and the Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) in Harrisburg (for 13 years).

DR. MURPHY, SUN P.E.T.S. MOBILE CLINIC VET, PASSED AWAY IN SEPTEMBER

SUN P.E.T.S. began working together with Dr. Murphy and his clinic staff two years ago when he agreed to come to this region every other month for a Sunday Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats. We are grateful that he extended his services to our organiza-tion and clients.

The following quote is from a message sent to Dr. Murphy’s family:

“Some of the good Dr. Murphy did was invisible, as it is the absence of countless stray and homeless pets that were NOT born because of Dr. Murphy's hard work and excellent skills. As one elderly woman explained, thinking of her outside cats no longer breeding too many kittens and causing her anguish and stress from worrying about the poor dears, "Now I can enjoy my cats." That is just one small example of the good that Dr. Mur-phy created. And there is a ripple effect as that good continues on.”

One person CAN make a difference in the world, as evidenced by Dr. Murphy’s life and his dedication to helping animals. He is missed and will be remembered fondly by the SUN P.E.T.S. volunteers and clients, and their companion and homeless animals who have no voice but ours.

SUN P.E.T.S. is grateful to The Buffalo Valley Rec-

reation Authority (BVRA) for or-

ganizing and sponsoring two spe-

cial events for dogs – and for

sharing the proceeds from both

events with SUN P.E.T.S. to sup-

port our mission.

BVRA’s annual DOGGIE DIP on

Saturday, Sept. 14th and Wednes-

day, Sept. 18th was a resounding success! Dogs had

the opportunity to play, run free, and swim in the

Lewisburg Community Pool after it closed for the

Special Thanks to The Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (BVRA) for Sponsoring Two Fund-Raising Events for Dogs

season. A free dog wash was included in the regis-

tration price for each dog.

On September 21st, BVRA spon-

sored its second annual Tails to

Trails 5K dog walk on the Buffalo

Valley Rail Trail. The course

started and finished at Buffalo Val-

ley Outfitter, in Brookpark Farm,

Lewisburg.

Thanks again to BVRA for your ongoing support,

and for offering these fun activities for dogs in our

community!

Dr. Matthew Murphy of Keystone Mobile Veteri-nary Services died tragically in late September 2013, leaving a vast void in the animal welfare field. Dr. Murphy was the veterinarian who first collaborated with SUN P.E.T.S. in late 2011 to make our dream of a regularly-scheduled mobile spay/neuter clinic for cats a reality during the past two years.

In his honor, the SUN P.E.T.S. “Spay-A-Stray” fund has been re-dedicated as “Dr. Murphy’s Spay-A-Stray Fund” as a permanent memorial to honor this inspirational veterinarian. From our initial contact in July 2011 through the most recent SUN P.E.T.S. mo-bile clinic in August 2013, Dr. Murphy and his staff spayed, neutered and vaccinated over 1,700 cats, in-cluding scores of free-roaming, homeless cats from throughout the Susquehanna Valley.

Working with several animal welfare organizations throughout the state for more than a decade, Dr. Mur-phy refined his processes to safely and efficiently spay, neuter and vaccinate over 100 cats a day on a routine basis through his mobile surgery unit.

SUN P.E.T.S. created its “Spay-A-Stray” fund last year when we realized that numerous clients and vol-unteers were willing to assist our mission by trapping, neutering and releasing (TNR’ing) homeless cats on

Dr. Murphy’s “Spay a Stray” Fund

their property, in their barns, and in neighborhood colonies to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens – especially those born outside to ferals, strays, and former pet cats that had been dumped. Many of these animals live in large colonies supported by volun-teer caretakers stretched to the limit of their resources providing food, shelter and other care on a daily basis.

Many volunteer caretakers and rescuers have told us that they could Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) more homeless cats, but just cannot afford to pay for these services for multiple outside cats. Your donation helps them do all they can for homeless cats by subsidizing the costs to spay, neuter and vaccinate them.

You can become a Sponsor of Dr. Murphy’s Spay-A-Stray Fund by earmarking (“ear-tipping”) your dona-tion to assist clients who are committed to trapping, spaying, neutering, and vaccinating multiple outside cats. These donations are used judiciously on a case-by-case basis.

Thank you for your generosity in honor, and in memory of Dr. Matthew Murphy, an unassuming but remarkable leader who paved the way for SUN P.E.T.S.’ expanded services to so many animals in this region.

SUN P.E.T.S. was thrilled to host its first annual

Paws in the Vineyard pet awareness and meet &

greet celebration on Sunday, Oct 13, 2013 on the

beautiful grounds of Spyglass Ridge Winery in Sun-

bury. Several hundred people attended the celebra-

tion, along with numerous pet dogs (and one pet cat)

on leashes. The main purpose of this event was to

raise awareness of the many animal rescue groups

and animal shelters in this area. This event was also

designed to be an informative experience to promote

public awareness and education regarding responsi-

ble pet ownership and decreasing pet overpopulation

through spaying/neutering and conscientious pet

guardianship.

Fifteen local animal rescue organizations partici-

pated in this fun-filled event to display their animals

awaiting adoption, to provide information to the pub-

lic about their mission, and to raise funds to cover

their operational costs. Several private vendors

joined the celebration in support of these organiza-

tions and their missions, including local businesses

and organizations that purchased event sponsorships.

The owners of Spyglass Ridge Winery generously

supported SUN P.E.T.S. by

hosting the day-long event on

their grounds, and by arranging

for live music during the day’s

festivities. They also had wine

tasting available at their tent

and tasting room.

Throughout the day, participants and visitors en-

joyed a glass of wine while visiting with representa-

tives from the animal rescue organizations, shopping

at the vendors’ tents, enjoying the delicious food pre-

pared on site by SUN P.E.T.S. volunteers, and listen-

ing to the music performed by David Latham and

Veterinarians –Champions of Our Success

This is the second in a series of articles showcasing area Veterinarians that participate in our mission to offer

low-cost spaying, neutering and other services to the public.

Beth Crombie, D.V.M. Co-Owner, Lewisburg Veterinary Hospital

829 Fairground Road, Lewisburg, PA

and

Mifflinburg Veterinary Clinic

10655 Route 304, Mifflinburg, PA

There are times during the course of a person’s life when they might discover that the professional objective they have cho-sen is not really what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Such was the professional path of Beth L. Crombie, DVM. Dr. Crombie says that she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do after high school graduation, and finally decided to attend Colorado State University and major in Communications. Upon graduation, she took a job as a plant manager for a large printing company in Denver, and soon discovered that she was not happy in that posi-tion.

Fortunately for SUN P.E.T.S., and many animals in this area, Dr. Crombie went back to Colorado State University and received a doctorate degree from the College of Veterinary Medi-cine in 1990. Having grown up in both the Bucks County and Pocono Mountain areas, she decided to return to Pennsylvania and take a veterinarian position with the Lewisburg Veterinary Hospital under the guidance of Robert F. Martin, VMD.

In 2009, Dr. Martin decided to semi-retire and sell his veteri-nary practice to Dr. Crombie and M. Borden Loving, DVM. They also bought a veterinary clinic at Mifflinburg. There are now three other full time veterinarians working with Dr. Crombie and Dr. Loving, along with a general staff of 20 people. Dr. Martin continues to work part-time as needed. Since acquisition of the Lewisburg Animal Hospital, Dr. Crombie and Dr. Loving have opened a daycare center for dogs - “Stay-N-Play Doggie Day Care,” that is usually filled to capacity. Dr. Crombie takes her own dog to the center twice a week for exercise and interaction with other dogs. “It makes for wonderful nights because he is exhausted when he gets home,” Dr. Crombie says.

Dr. Crombie says she works 45 to 50 hours a week, “with paperwork taking up a good part of the time.” She also says that one of the most interesting parts of being a veteri-narian is doing stomach/abdominal surgery. “I am always amazed at the range of items that can end up in a dog’s stomach. I never know what I am going to find – stones, underwear, plastic, bikini bottoms, corncobs, small balls, etc.,” she says. Dr. Crombie also does numerous liver, spleen and pancreatic surgeries. “One of the hardest things to deal with is when we could do something to help or save an animal, but the owners cannot afford the treatment,” Dr. Crombie says. “Another difficult decision is to have to euthanize a litter of kittens or an adult cat when we really don’t want to do it. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no other option. Thank goodness it only happens occasionally.”

Dr. Crombie believes the answer to bringing the feral animal population under control is through education. “I just wish people would realize what they are doing. Pets aren’t livestock, and you can’t treat them as such. I wish there was some kind of birth control dust we could sprin-kle around outside for cats.” Dr. Crombie says rural areas are the worst, especially in areas where there are barns. “Free spays and neuters would definitely help the animal population, but no one can afford to do that,” she says. The demand would be enough to drive you crazy!” Dr. Crombie says that dogs are treated with much more respect than cats. “Cats are treated like they are rodents.”

According to Dr. Crombie, the most remarkable change in Veterinary Medicine is how pain is managed. “It used to be that no one really thought much about animal pain. Now we always think about managing pain in every case we deal with. Pain management has come a long way, and I am sure lots of animals are quietly grateful.”

There is a large, two story cage standing by a window in the waiting room of the Lewisburg Animal Hospital. There are usu-ally kittens and/or cats in the cage that are waiting for adoption. “It is remarkable that we adopted out 60 cats over the summer. Kittens go quickly, but it takes longer for adult cats to find homes,” Dr. Crombie says. Anyone looking for a new cat or kitten is welcome to check at the Lewisburg Animal Hospital to see the animals on display.

The Lewisburg Animal Hospital holds discounted spay/neuter clinics for stray and feral cats, but not for house pets, every three months. They can handle 35 to 40 cats a day at the clinics which are not advertised. In conjunction with SUN P.E.T.S., Dr. Crombie also holds rabies clinics periodically, and offers low-cost animal spaying and neutering service to SUN P.E.T.S. clients. She says that she is

“the luckiest person in the world to get to do good things nearly every working day, and to meet so many nice people and their pets.” She added that she couldn’t do it without her team. “We have really good people working here.”

You can make an appointment to see Dr. Crombie at the

Lewisburg Animal Hospital, or sign your dog up for “Stay-N-Play

Doggie Day Care,” by calling 570-523-3640, and to make an ap-

pointment at the Mifflinburg Veterinary Clinic, call 570-966-7387.
