tables and present it to the Council on or before the July BBQ. Kitchen Needs: It was brought up from the ladies in the kitchen that a larger stove with 5 burners was needed. Mary Lea was asked to get prices for a stove as well as look into the purchase of a refrigerator with no freezer for the kitchen. The refrigerator need has also been brought up by the Funeral committee in the past. Organist Salary: The Council would like to commend the service we have had from Eilene Powers. Her dedication and service to St. John’s is to be applauded. It was brought to the Council’s attention that she has not received a well-deserved raise in a number of years. Marshall moved and Mary Lea seconded that Eilene’s salary be raised to $800 and this also includes four Sundays off during the year. Motion carried. Pastor reported that he would not be here on June 31st and Pastor Ron Walter will be the replacement. Pastor requested that there be improvements to the driveway at the parsonage. It is in desperate need of a load of gravel. Mary Lea moved and Christy seconded that gravel be purchased not to exceed $500. Motion carried. With no further new business, Marshall moved and Harry seconded for the meeting to adjourn. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned by President Mark Stroman with the Lord’s Prayer at 7:00PM. Respectfully submitted, Mary Lea Pfenninger

The Women of St. John’s held their Unity Meeting on May 19, 2015. Mary Lea called the meeting to order. Pastor opened with prayer. Christy of the Sarah’s Circle gave the devotion, “Be Wise Like the ants. The ants follow each other and the people follow God”. The sign in roster was passed around, there were 8 people present. The offering was collected in the amount of $34.00 and will be donated to Oromo Christian Fellowship Mission Church in Houston. The minutes from the March meeting were reviewed. Christy moved to accept the minutes, Ginia seconded it. The motion carried to accept the minutes. Sherry went over the treasurers’ report. It was moved to accept the report by Ginia and seconded by Margie. The motion carried to accept the report as given. OLD BUSINESS Sherry read thank you cards from Goliad Elementary and Middle School, Water Missions International , United Campus Ministry and Joyce Jones. Everyone was in agreement with that idea. NEW BUSINESS The next Unity Meeting will be held July 7 at 6:00 p.m. Mark your calendars as this is not the standard meeting date. Pastor Randy reported to us that the Women of the NALC Annual Gathering will be held in Dallas at the Airport Hyatt on August 12. He encouraged everyone to attend. If anyone is interested in attending, please contact Mary Lea or Pastor for more details. The Joint Polka Service will be held on July 26. Mary Lea will contact

St. John’s Lutheran Church Council Meeting May 12, 2015

The regular meeting of the Council held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Mark Stroman. Members were present were Marshall Henson, Harry Heil, Mary Lea Pfenninger, Mark Stroman, Christy Paulsgrove, and Pastor Randy Bruno. A quorum was established. OLD BUSINESS The Minutes were reviewed. Harry moved and Marshall seconded for the April minutes to be approved. Motion carried. The treasurer’s reports were reviewed and discussed. The calendar for June was reviewed. There was no mail to be acted upon. Committee reports: Altar and Communion: Wine needs to be purchased. Mary Lea will do this. Cemetery: It has come to the attention of the Council that there have been complaints about the mowing. Mary Lea reported that the cemetery committee wants the congregation to understand that with the abundance of rainfall this spring, that it has been difficult finding a dry day to mow as well as the grass has been growing at an alarming rate. The committee is doing the best it can to keep up with the mowing. We ask for your understanding in this matter. We are doing the best we can under difficult circumstances. We thank you for your understanding and patience.

Runge church ladies to see if they would like to work in the kitchen. Christy said the Sarah Circle will meet and finalize the plans for Honors Day Dinner on May 31. Christy reported on Vacation Bible School which will be held on June 8 -11. She has teachers, kitchen ladies, craft supervisor, music volunteers lined up with wonderful ideas in place. Dona-tions were given at Circle Meetings for VBS and given to Christy to use for supplies. Our project for the month of July is to collect food for Goliad County Outreach with Martha Circle in charge. Our project for August is for each Circle to collect school supplies and have them at the church by August 16 as that will be the Sunday they will be blessed. Sarah Circle is in charge of the project. Also in August we support the Wesley Nurse Project with more details to follow at next meeting. There is a Pot Luck meal on August 30th with Rebekah’s Lunch Bunch Circle in charge. Mary Lea reported to us that the new church pew cushions were ordered and should be in place for the Joint Polka Service on July 26. Christy suggested we contact Ministerial Alliance to see if anyone would have use for our old cushions. Mary Lee suggested that maybe the Oromo Mission Church in Houston could use them. Mary Lea reported that as representation for the church council she will be checking on a new stove for the kitchen with possibly a smooth glass top with 5 burners and a convection oven. It was reported that we are in the need for more burners when we have special functions. Also she will be looking into a new refrigerator for the kitchen with a larger capacity. LaNell reminded Mary Lea to check consumer reports to make sure that it has a good rating as a lot of the larger refrigerators do not have good ratings. With no further business, the meeting was closed with The Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Sherry Gloor, Assistant Secretary

“The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person

brings evil things out of an evil treasure.”

~Matthew 12:35

I read a good book a while back that had a very interesting premise. A group of investors, a couple of hundred years ago, formed and bound themselves to a common cause; their intentions though were somewhat suspicious. They put a good amount of money into businesses that they knew would give guaranteed great returns for a long, long time. As the years went by, someone from each family of the original investors would be chosen to succeed the previous one after they died. It was all very secret; they could not even tell other family members about it. Those chosen became very rich. – The ones in the secret group called themselves ‘the list’.

The author came up with an intriguing idea. What would life be like for us all if the relatives of our past had provided completely for our future? Indeed, what would the world look like if everyone alive now had been provided for by someone in the past? – Wait a moment, I forgot that not everyone would be chosen. Only one person from each family would be able to be part of the list. So therefore some of us would inherit greatly and the others would just be out of luck. It makes good sense when you consider that those rich ones would need the

rest of us to serve them. – Still, like the lotto, we might like the idea enough to be willing to gamble on being the one to be chosen.

If that idea intrigues you, then consider the view of another author. This one wrote a best seller, it is called the Bible. He too made a good investment and left a tremendous inheritance. From what I understand, there is even a list of names. If you read this book, though, you find out that the intentions of this author are not suspicious at all. And there is nothing secret about it. As a matter of fact, he wants you to tell not only your family, but everyone about it. And if you are worried about becoming rich, you will be pleasantly surprised because he has redefined what it means to be wealthy.

His premise, by the way, is that he is a relative of yours who cares about your future. Although he is from your past, he also wants to be an active part of your present, and a highly involved part of your future. Even though his riches are more vast than your imagination, he is willing to give you more than your fair share and all the while serve you. If you take a close look around you will find what he has already given you. Why? Because he has already chosen you, just ask him. And you do not even have to gamble on receiving this inheritance; you do though have to believe. – By the way, it is the only guaranteed investment you can get in this world.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal;; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” ~Matthew 6:19-20a
