Going Batty During the week of October 12 – 19 Sun Bears learned about bats— when they like to sleep,

what they like to eat, and how they communicate with each other.

Integrating Art

Children had several art options this week: making bat headbands, mixing up some bat “slime,” sponge painting bat stencils, coloring/cutting out upside down bats, and making three-dimensional bats with clothes pins and coffee filters.

Integrating Science Nonfiction books filled with pictures of bats were daily choices at the science table. In addition, we set up a simple experiment with two paper towel holders and an aluminum pie plate to help children understand the concept of echolocation.

Integrating Writing Sun Bears practiced the letter “B” as well as the word “bat” on white boards and in their journals. Each child also contributed to a class book titled, “Mr. Bat, Mr. Bat, What Did You See, Hear, Feel, Taste and Smell?”

The Great Outdoors This newsletter would not be complete without a dose of gratitude for this wonderful St. Louis fall weather. Sun Bears continue to enjoy the playground, working their gross motor muscles on the climbers, scooters and trikes, swings and slides. And the sand and water are transformed every afternoon through lots of collaborative play. We love watching where their imaginations take them. Until next time,

Miss Colleen and Miss Katie
