Join us for a summer adventure! Summer at Sandy Spring creates the biggestand best summer experiences for kids of all ages, from 3-year-olds all the way

through 12th Grade.We’reACA-accredited and we’ve been at it for over 20years.Along the way, we’ve learned a few things:

• Kids prefer swimming ponds to video games.•A side portion of academic enrichment helps them keep their minds in shape forSeptember.

• They’d rather learn and run and laugh than do almost anything else.

We build on that free spirit and creative energy, and that’s why kids love Summerat Sandy Spring. Campers splash and play in our swimming pond, experiment in

art and performances, learn teamwork while rock climbing, and changecommunities through service projects.

Summer at Sandy Spring is fun for kids and gives parents peace of mind.Withour low camper to counselor ratio, kids get the encouragement and attention theydeserve. With extended hours and numerous programs, finding a campexperience that suits your needs is easy. All of our programs promote teamwork, friendship, and most importantly, fun in a safe environment.

Summer at Sandy Spring takes place on the 140-acre wooded campus of theSandy Spring Friends School (SSFS), a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Gradecollege preparatory day school in the heart of Montgomery County. Using ourown buses, we provide daily transportation to and from a variety of DC andBaltimore metro area locations. We also provide the option of before- and after-camp care starting as early as 7:30 am and extending until 6:00 pm.

Our programs are designed to accommodate flexible schedules, create stimulatingexperiences, and offer tons of fun. With a balance ofengaging academic enrichment lessons and exciting, recreational activities, Summer at Sandy Spring givescampers a high-energy summer filled with friendship, learning, and adventure.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES GUIDE • JANUARY 2014 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO THE GAZETTE 7

Though February does notoften elicit images of youngstersbuilding campfires or playinggames in the pool, the monthmore synonymous with theSuper Bowl and Valentine’s Dayis a great time for parents to startthinking about summer campsfor their kids.

Summer camp is often some-thing children look forward to,and something they will fondlyrecall long after they reach adult-hood. For many, summer campprovides a first taste of indepen-dence, as youngsters spend sig-nificant time away from homewithout their parents for the firsttime in their lives. But, as greatan experience as summer campcan be, it can be just as difficult ifparents don’t find the camp that’sthe right fit for the child.

That’s why it behooves par-ents to start thinking about sum-mer camps in the winter, beforecamps fill out their rosters, whichtends to happen in early spring. The following are a few thingsparents should take into consid-eration when seeking a summercamp for their children.

StaffThe right summer camp staff

can make all the difference. Manychildren are understandably shywhen arriving at a summer campsince their friends from homemight not be joining them. Thatcan make kids hesitant to partici-pate in activities or less enthu-siastic about those activities. A

good staff will know how to makecampers feel welcome, whichshould help them come out oftheir shells and make the most oftheir summer camp experiences.

The quality of staffs can varysignificantly depending on thecamp, so it’s important thatparents ask camp representa-tives about their staff membersbefore making any commitments.Ask how long the staff has beentogether, as well as the type oftraining new and veteran staffmembers undergo before thestart of the camp season? Does it

include first aid and emergencymedical training and certification?

It’s also best to ask about theprocess the camp employs beforehiringnewstaffmembers, includ-ing the extent of backgroundchecks. Are criminal backgroundchecks conducted? How manyreferences must potential staffmembers supply to be consid-ered for employment? A goodcamp will be forthcoming withanswers to all of your questions,so eliminate those that appearhesitant to share informationabout their staff.

A day in the lifeParents should ask what a

typical day is like once the sea-son hits full swing. Many parentswant their youngsters to havea well-rounded experience; oth-ers might want their children toattend a more specialized camp, such as a sports camp focusingon a particular sport or a musiccamp devoted to helping kidsbecome better musicians.

Regardless of the type of campparents are considering for theirchildren, they should ask aboutwhat daily life at the camp is like.

Ask to see schedules and howstrictly camps adhere to thoseschedules. When consideringspecialized camps, ask the staffrepresentative if the campers willhave the chance to simply have alittle fun and which types of rec-reational activities are planned togive them a break from what areoften rigorous schedules.

Camp goalsAnother thing parents must

consider before choosing a sum-mer camp is the goal of eachindividual camp. A camp shouldbe dedicated to ensuring thekids have fun, even when theyare attending more specializedcamps that tend to be more strict. In addition, parents should lookfor a camp that wants its attend-ees to foster relationships withtheir fellow campers. Summercamp can be lonely for someyoungsters, especially thoseattending camp for the first time, but one that strives to promotefriendship among its camperscan reduce, if not eliminate, anyfeelings of homesickness.

Remember, late winter iswhen parents should start look-ing at summer camps for theirchildren, and there are a host offactors moms and dads shouldtake into consideration duringthe vetting process to ensuretheir youngsters have as muchfun as possible.
