Welcome to the Summer themed programming kit. The purpose of this kit is to bring summer fun into the library through education. The Wapiti team hopes to make storytime easy and convenient with help from this kit.

Each program is based around a Suggested Story Time Plan. The Canadian authors’ themed story time program includes:

- Book description list- Opening Songs- Puppet Activity- Flannel Stories & Felt Songs- “Get the Wiggles Out” Activities- Goodbye Songs- Craft Activities- Inventory list- Feedback sheets

Suggested Story Time Layout

As mentioned, each program is based around a Suggested Story Time Plan, located on Page 3. This plan is provided as inspiration but is not a strict rule librarians must follow. The suggested plan can be adapted and used as necessary for your audience.

Using the Suggested Story Time Plan, located on Page 3, we suggest using the following layout.

Puppets in the Library

Why Use Puppets?

- Puppets can give meaning to stories and bring classical characters to life.

- Puppets provide a context for a conversation between a character and yourself.

- Puppets can help break down barriers because they aren’t threatening, building a relationship between yourself and new children.

Flannel Stories & Songs

Flannel stories provide an intriguing medium for telling a story. The bold colours capture children’s attention and teach them visual literacy. Pointing to colours and counting out shapes are fantastic ways to get participation from your group.

1. Little Whale, Little WhaleScript: Little mouse, little mouse, are you in the _____ pail?Felts provided: 6 pails of various colours, 1 whaleSuggested book pairing: The Whale in my Swimming PoolInstructions: Prompt kids to name a colour the pail (trying to keep them away from the colour it actually is under for at least a few turns). After, lift up the pail to see if the whale is there are not. Continue until the whale is found.

Example:Little whale, little whale,Are you in a red pail? No...”(Continue until the whale is found, prompting the kids to guess and name colours)

You can also try using this rhyme instead:

“Little whale, little whale, come out and playWhat colour pail are you in today?”

Suggested book pairing: Dig In!Instructions: Set up garden with vegetables hidden in their cut outs. Ask the kids to name what they see. Prompt kids using lyrics to guess what is in the garden.

“Get the Wiggles Out” Activities

It is natural for children to get antsy during story time. “Getting the wiggles out” are fun interactive activities aimed at shedding some of the kids energy. These activities also pair physical actions to their accompanying words, making fun songs educational moments.

Goodbye songs indicate to the kids that story time is over and invites them to participate again. Sometimes they can be paired to reiterate the message shared in the opening song.

2. Paper Bag Creatures

DescriptionCreate your own hand puppet using basic paper bags. This craft gives children the opportunity to blend their own creatures, for example a Goat-Whale found in Don’t Splash the Saskquatch. Cut out necessary shapes, eyes, teeth or wings in advance.

DescriptionCreate a barn owl using a paper bag. Fold sheets of construction paper vertically in a fan fold & staple to sides of bag. Template can be found online and pieces can be cut out in advance.

3. Handprint Ice Cream Cones & Cupcake Line Cones

DescriptionHave the kids trace out their hands to be used as the ice cream portion or use cupcake liners. Cut out cones (brown triangles) in advance. Have kids decorate as desired.
