WHAT
Charleston County School District’s Summer SAIL is a three week summer enrichment pro-gram for the gifted and talented. Rising third through sixth graders who meet South Carolina State Department gifted and talented eligibility may participate in sum-mer SAIL activities.
HOURS
8:30 A.M.—4:00 P.M. Monday through Friday

PROCEDURE
A limited number of stu-dents can be accepted into Summer SAIL. They will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who meet the state requirements and are interested in partici-pating in this summer’s program need to mail in the application before April 10, 2018.

Fill out and submit the application online at the link provided. You will be notified whether or not your child has been
accepted by the email from the application form.
** The only reason a GT student will not be accepted is because all classes have been filled. Students not ac-cepted will be placed on
a waiting list.
PACKET PICK-UP
Official registration Packet Pick-Up will be a drop-in held June 8th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION COST
The cost for Summer SAIL per students is $450.00 payable with ap-plication or payment plan (p.3). All materials and instruction are included. (Unless otherwise noti-fied.)
LUNCH
You may wish to send your child with a bag lunch however, breakfast and lunch have been pro-vided to our program at no cost.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation will be available for a $100.00 per child fee. Only stu-dents that PRE-register for transportation will be allowed to ride the bus. Bus stops will be located at CCSD schools across the district. If ap-plying for the bus please indicate the school you would like to use as a bus stop.
CLASSES
Students will be enrolled in two challenging and engaging programs geared toward their par-ticular grade level.
They will work with one
teacher for the morning
class, then switch to their
afternoon class after
lunch. Class choices can

Salty Dogs & Other Nautical Mysteries

Ocean travelers get your passport ready. Set sail on a tsunami ride around the world. From one ocean to another, we will uncover the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. Em-barking upon each destination we will descend into the marvelous, mystical mysteries of each of the seas. What gives the oceans their color? What are the colors of the Great Barrier Reef? Why are the animals in the Antarctic so large?

Wild About Theater

Weird, Wonderful Wildlife, Oh MY! Are you wild about animals? Do you enjoy creating plays & puppets? Then “Wild about Theater” is for you! Explore the many types of theatre productions, design costumes and sets, and help write the grand finale theatre production. As field natural-ists, investigate endangered animals and their
unique habitats. Write articles for the “Going
Wild “ class magazine - a keepsake of your

Look out NASA! Have you ev-er wanted to build and design your own rocket? Roll up your sleeves and get ready to build and test balloon rockets, rocket racers, study propulsion with Alka-Seltzer rockets and launch pop bottle rock-ets. Through the study of the history of New-ton’s laws, students will design, construct, and launch various types of experiments. Get ready for blast-off!

SAIL Odyssey of the Mind
Teacher: Megan Baum If you enjoy being creative and competing with others, then OOTM is for you! This class is
based on the international program that pro-vides creative problem solving opportunities through fun experiences. Students will work as teams to come up with ideas, build structures, and solve problems. Students will develop col-laboration skills using a myriad of hands-on and verbal spontaneous challenges that become more complex as the days go by. Join us if you like challenges and working with others!

Think, Build and Escape
Teacher: Shannon Gibson
Do you like to build or create things or perhaps even unlock puzzles? Get your brains and hands ready for some exciting STEM, Maker Space, and Breakout activities! Prepare for a mental and physical adventure of building and creating items with Legos, various household items, and even technology! You are sure to be amazed at what you can do when you put your mind and hands to work. In fact, these skills will be utilized to participate in multiple class-room Breakouts where you will work with a team to solve puzzles to escape! You won't want to miss this opportunity to push your think-ing!

Did you know that you could learn about force and motion using K’Nex? We will use everyday items to build, create, and learn about how things work in the exciting summer program. You will experiment with force and motion & build a roller coaster. We will navigate through the world of STEM with various experiments and creations. We will touch on the solar system, living green and integrate creative writing into our class. There is so much to explore, so put on your think-ing cap and join me for the summer!

Art in History: Focus on
World Cultures

Weird, Have you ever wanted to travel back in time & experience a whole different way of life? Students will be offered a hands-on experience, using replicas of art they have decorated them-selves to reflect the time periods & cultures from which the replicas originated. Through the study of artwork from different time periods & cultures, students will get to enjoy history from the inside. This will allow a cross-curricular approach to learning by incorporating English, Social Studies & Art Education Standards as well as creating
digital media.

Standing in the Spotlight
Teacher: Jamie Gurney
Do you often picture yourself motivating a crowd of people with a powerful speech? Have you ever wanted to experience original storytelling? Have you thought about writing your own drama and being one of your own actors? This class is for students who love an audience and would like to refine their speaking skills or gain confidence in front of a crowd. Students will spend time study-ing improv, storytelling, argument, and public speaking. There will be lots of fun exercises, games, and activities to boost confidence and speaking skills. In the final stretch of the pro-gram, students will write, design, and deliver their own presentations in front of a live audi-ence. Presentation ideas include but are not lim-ited to: a persuasive speech about a real-world problem, a short drama or skit, or oral reading of original stories.

What A Find

Do you like to....Find things that are lost? Put pieces to-gether? Figure out stories from clues? Learn about the past? These are all things archaeologists, researchers, and history lovers do—maybe you’re one, too! Become a part of the team and investigate some of Earth’s greatest finds. Delve into scientific investigations of the archaeological processes, and help uncov-er an answer for the mysterious artifacts of the past.

Captains, Coastlines & Creatures
Teacher: Jessica Smith
Come aboard as we sail back to explore the gold-en age of piracy. We will explore the origins of pirates such as Blackbeard and Anne Bonny while learning about the fascinating life that they lived. Explore Carolina coastlines, map making and go on scavenger hunts. Create a sea shan-ty rap, pirate flags and get a hands-on experience with the sea creatures pi-rates encountered as they sailed the islands looking for treasures. So get ready matey as we weigh anchor for an exciting time!

Sports Newscasters

Ever dreamed of finding your face on a Wheaties Box? Move over CNN! This action-packed camp experience incorporates mathematics and technology using a variety of sports for spring boarding into learning fun. In this 3-week adventure, students will use their athletic talents to push their mathematical understanding to a new level. These Sports Newscasters will research famous athletes, measure and graph their own athletic accomplishments and create Media Guides and iMovies along the way. As Sports Newscasters, students experience the performance aspect of sports by creating their own persuasive commercial and producing, di-recting, or starring in a class version of Sports Center.
