Share Your Artistic Knowledge and Inspire Others in Our CommunityThe City of Tracy Cultural Arts Division accepts applications for Contract Instructors who wish to teach at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts, Arts Education Program fosters life-long learning by offering a tier of classes in Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts. Students of all ages are able to take advantage of year-round courses taught by accomplished teachers in specialized classrooms.

The 37,000 square-foot interdisciplinary arts center houses nine classrooms for instruction in visual and performing arts. Classes can be held in private or group settings. Workshops and seminars may also be considered.

The success of the Arts Education Program significantly relies on hiring enthusiastic art instructors that will bring a commitment of quality and professionalism to the program. We are currently seeking Contract Instructors to offer classes as early as the Fall 2011 Quarter. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I register for a class? To register for a class in person or by fax, complete the registration form located on page 3. Make sure to include your name, contact phone number, and the class number which corresponds to the class in which you wish to enroll in. Bring the completed form to the Grand Theatre Patron Services located at 715 Central Avenue in downtown Tracy. Registration forms can be faxed to (209) 831-6271. Online registration is available at www.tracyartsandrec.com. For your family ID and password, please call (209) 831-6858 or email [email protected]. All fees must be paid in full during the time of registration.

What if a class is full? If you attempt to register for a class and find that it is full, you may ask the Patron Services Staff to place you or your child’s name on a waiting list. If a space does become available in the class, the Patron Services Staff will contact the waiting list candidates in order of availability.

What is a Resident Discount and Cost fee? If your address has five digits or more, your home may still be outside of the Tracy city limits. It is possible to live in one of the three Tracy zip codes and still not live within the Tracy city limits. Families residing inside the City limits receive the Resident Discount. All non-residents pay the Cost fee. Call Patron Services if you are unsure.

Is financial assistance available? Yes, financial assistance is available to qualified applicants. Participants may request a financial aid application from the Patron Services Staff and return it with the required forms of income verification. Applications must be accompanied by a registration form.

Is late registration available? If space permits, class registration will be open for up to one week after the first day of class. After the first week of instruction, registration will be closed. Students are not allowed to register half way through the class session, or for a fraction of the class.

Can I drop-in the day of class to sign up? Guests may not drop-in to a class without having officially registered. In order to participate in a class, you must be enrolled. Guests may visit the Patron Services between the hours of 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday and Saturday 10-2 pm, to register. If a student registers the day of the class, they are advised to bring their receipt. Instructors cannot accept payments. All financial transactions and registration takes place through the Patron Services or online at www.tracyartsandrec.com.

What if I decide to withdraw from a class? To withdraw from a class and obtain a full refund, you must complete the “Class Withdrawal Form” at least five business days prior to the start of class. If you decide within the first week of class that you are not satisfied, you may withdraw and receive a prorated refund or credit. All withdrawals or transfers will be charged a non-refundable $5 transaction fee. These fees do not apply to withdrawals made on tracyartsandrec.com.

What happens if the class does not meet the minimum student enrollment? If a class does not meet the minimum student enrollment, the staff and the instructor may cancel the class. Students will be notified of the cancellation in advance, and issued a full refund or class credit and will not be charged a transaction or refund fee.

What if I miss a day of class? If you miss a day of class, you will not receive a make-up session or a refund for the day you missed. By registering for a class, you assume the responsibility of attending class during the times and dates scheduled. The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts will only issue a make-up day or a prorated refund for classes cancelled by staff or instructors. If a class is cancelled by the instructor, or an unforeseen circumstance prevents the class from taking place, the student will be notified.

Are art materials provided in classes? The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts does provide shared art supplies and equipment for most visual arts classes. In some cases instructors may request students to purchase specific materials outside of class. The instructor may also opt to purchase specialized materials for the entire class and assess a small lab fee to cover the cost.

Where is the nearest available parking? Free parking is available on Central Avenue, 7th Street, as well as nearby lots on 6th Street in Historic Downtown Tracy.

Are parents allowed to observe classes? We encourage parents to wait outside the classroom to prevent overcrowding and distractions. Parents may relax in our lobbies or loggia while waiting. There are also windows on our classroom doors where parents can temporarily monitor their children at any time. In the event you feel you need to accompany your child in class, please call (209) 831-6858.

Are food or drinks allowed in the classrooms? Food, drinks, candy or gum is not allowed in the classrooms with the exception of bottled water. Instructors will ask students to dispose of food, drinks, candy or gum if taken into the class.

Preschool Combo I/IIPreschoolers will be introduced to tap and ballet through playful interaction and a variety of activities. Classes will begin with basic dance steps and develop into more challenging tap and ballet moves. Participants will develop motor skills, coordination and self-confidence in a fun learning environment. Class meets once a week for 6 weeks.

Advanced ComboThis class will involve advance aspects of ballet and tap to challenge participants and build further comprehension and appreciation of dance as a fine art form. Students will incorporate fundamental skills such as stretching, strengthening, memorization, and mastery of dance technique, and evolve at a progressive and constructive pace. Ballet I/IIStudents will learn to appreciate the art of ballet using barre and floor exer-cises. Participants will develop flexibility, grace, strength, and knowledge of ballet terminology in a fun learning environment. Students will be able to apply the skills learned in ballet to various art forms, and grow effectively as dancers. Beginning and intermediate students are encouraged to enroll.

Bollywood Boom Bollywood Dance is a stylistic equivalent to western musical theatre. Students will learn choreography to popular Bollywood songs and understand the essentials in facial expressions. This class meets once a week for 6-weeks.

Ballroom BootcampHave you sampled the ballroom classes at the Grand and are ready to learn new fi gures? By popular demand, Cathy Medeiros is off ering 4 hours of instruction in one style of dance. We will cover 7 fi gures but, since we start with the basic beginners are able to participate. The class meets twice on two consecutive Tuesdays. The April class will feature the Tango. The May class will cover West Coast Swing. The 6/14 & 8/2 classes cover Salsa. The classes beginning on 7/5 and 8/16 feature a Ballroom dance. The 7/19 off ering will focus on Swing.

Breaking into the Biz -Beginning Acting for Adults In this class students will touch on the basic fundamentals of acting in an environment that will explore the emotional approach to acting in a positive and supportive manner. Students will work on freeing the imagination, sense memory, effective memory personalization substitution, improvisation, and Sanford Meisner’s acting method’s that allow the student to tap into the inner reality of a character. Shakespeare as a Second LanguageShakespeare really is like learning a foreign language, but when you spend a little time with it, you really start understanding things within the content of the dialogue. Come dally in an hour and a half workshop, diving into the surface of Taming of the Shrew and King Lear. You will learn a bit about the Bard of Avon, and a bit about saying Shakespeare like it should be said. Not only will you learn, but you will most likely laugh at the comedy of the Shrew, and cry at the tragedy of the King. This class meets once.

Music Together FREE PREVIEW Enjoying live music making with your little one in this FREE Music Together Preview Class. Play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs, and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic musical variety. Parent and child are welcome to observe and participate. Private Guitar *Private Guitar classes are designed for the novice as well as the player with fundamental skills. The student starts by learning the parts of the guitar including the order of the strings and how to properly tune them. Once the student has a grasp of the notes on the guitar and an introduction to basic music reading, instruction on chords and three of the primary scales will follow. Students will also gain an understanding of the common chords found in such music genres as Latin, blues, R&B, jazz, and rock. During the final week participants will learn how to play a simple song.

Beginning Private Ukulele If you were ever curious about this little instrument, now is the time to check it out! In this class students will learn how to read and play chords on the ukulele. Once the student progresses, instrument picking and note reading will be covered. Basic strumming will also be taught in order to play songs and sing along. Artist Studio Artist Studio off ers artists the opportunity to work on an independent basis during scheduled studio hours throughout the week. Visual Arts Studio II will be partitioned for individual artist space. Grand Theatre Staff will be present to monitor classroom activity. Participants may work on drawing, painting, or mixed media art during studio time. Students must bring their own drawing or painting supplies and clean up their own work space after every session. Art II Art II is a continuation of Intro to Art I. Students will further concentrate on the techniques of pastels, and review of acrylics, but Art II is a primarily watercolor class. Students will learn a stronger color theory by use of mixing and creating new colors to paint. Watercolor techniques are demonstrated and used in final project. Students will continue to bring own subject matter to paint as well as drawing examples from the instructor. Students learn to step back and slow down with projects to further understand the use of mediums. The students participate in a group project to create one final piece and then is raffled off to one of the enrolled students as a keepsake. Color and creativity is highly encouraged in this class. Students must have completed Intro to Art I to continue into Art II. A student Art exhibit is held on the last day of class for parents. This is a five day course.

A demon-stration of the techniques used by current and past artists in the structure of Art III. Students will continue to bring own subject matter and then it is painted in the style from the Artist highlighted that week. The students will participate in a group project to create one final piece and then is raffled off to one of the enrolled students as a keepsake. Color and creativity is highly encour-aged in the class. Student must have completed Art I and Art II to continue into Art III. A student exhibit is held on the last day of class for the parents.

Intermediate Digital PhotographyThis offering picks up where the Beginning class leaves off. In this class students will go beyond the basic understanding and workings of pointing and shooting a digital camera (single-lens reflex, “dSLR,” models preferred). Using classroom discussions and working with the cameras in the varied locations around the Grand Theatre, students will explore how the effects of exposure controls affect the image – f/stops, shutter speeds, ISO settings, shooting modes. The class will also explore ideas on the “aesthetics” side to creating an effective image, as well as learning to see the effects of various lighting conditions. Some aspects of image-editing and sharing/posting images online will also be covered. Class meets once a week for 4 weeks.

Advanced Digital Photography This offering will be driven by students’ specific questions and issues with where they are with their photography. The issues may hinge of technical aspects, or difficulty getting a grasp of something with lighting. There might be “aesthetics” issues in getting a photo to better tell a story, or involve different styles – landscapes, portraits, nature, documentary, etc. This will be a hands-on focused 4-weeks session, working on your questions you most want to tackle.

Acrylic Painting Workshop Acrylic painting focusing on still life, acrylic techniques and learning the many ways the medium is used. This class is open to beginner to intermediate students who would like to learn how to use the medium and for those who have knowledge would learn a further study of the medium. Writing Outside the Box - Summer Day CampImagine creatively writing a story with visual imagery and translating that into your own book. Children’s Theatre Camp 2011 Believe it or not, Summer Camp is right around the corner. This year, the Tracy Performing Arts Foundation is planning a great new program based on all the popular elements of past Summer Camps. We will offer three sections for this year’s Summer Camp Experience: • Children’s Theatre Camp for 1st through 3rd Graders during the 2010-

2011 Kid’s Theatre Camp for 4th through 8th graders during the 2010–2011

• Teen Theatre Camp for those in 9th or above during the 2010–2011 academic year.

These performance-based camps for youth 6-13 years old are an excellent introduction to theatre, with training in acting, singing and dancing. Students spend part of each day working on scenes, music, text and movement under the direction of Tracy Performing Arts Foundation Instructors. Through various theatre games and activities, students will develop social skills and make new friends. Students will also engage in a multitude of art disciplines throughout their camp experience, learning about many aspects of theatre-making,

Teen Theatre Camp 2011 The Teen Theatre Camp meets weekdays June 20 - August 5, 2011 for the academic and theatre training portion of their camp experience. The final three weeks of the session, teen thespians will participate in the technical rehearsals of Alice In Wonderland. This performance-based camp immerses students in the magical world of theatre, with training in auditioning, acting, singing and dancing. Students spend part of each day preparing for the final performance of Alice In Wonderland presented by the Tracy Performing Arts Foundation for the Performing Arts. Students have opportunities for developing social skills and making new friends. Camp will be focused on text, scene work, story creation and character building as it relates to Alice In Wonderland and other shows. Students will learn movement and vocal performance techniques, in addition to acting instruction and direction by Tracy Performing Arts Foundation instructors and various guest instructors. Students will engage in a multitude of art disciplines throughout camp, learning about many aspects of theatre-making, including prop-construction, costume and set design. Students will be required to audition for placement in major and minor roles associated with Alice In Wonderland. Those students not interested in acting are welcomed and encouraged to be on the production team for the production of Alice In Wonderland.

The paid and ticketed performance, with costumes and props, is scheduled to take place on the Friday evening August 5th and Saturday afternoon August 6th. This is one of our most popular camps – spaces will fill quickly!
