It is hard to believe that another school year is complete. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, students, school board and community members for all their support. The last two years have been a wonderful experience for me. We have faced some challenges over the last two years like all schools have, espe- cially smaller districts, but with the help and support of the staff we have continued to make progress. This staff has continually been asked to do more and more with less and less time and money, but they did it without complaining and did an excellent job. Boyer Valley has a tremendous staff to work with. Boyer Valley was a great place for me to start my career as a superintendent. Together this year we continued to grow our 1:1 initiative. Every student K-12 now has a Chromebook. We have Smart Boards in every classroom K-12. Our staff and students are doing great things with technology. Our Tiered Algebra class we implemented this year has been a huge success. It is helping students that missed key concepts in math, catch up and learn those concepts so they can be successful in high school math. The new Ag/FFA program is also off to a great start. There are 80 students that take Ag classes at Boyer Valley and we have 35 students in FFA already in the first year. The Boyer Valley Agricultural Foundation has helped fund a lot of the start-up costs for this program. Even though our certified enrollment is down our open in enrollment has more students open enrolled in than out. In fact we now have 48 students open enrolled in and 23 student open enrolled out. All of these things are proof of the commitment the board and staff have to providing the best education to our kids. Congratulations Class of 2016 Graduation was held on May 22th and we salute our seniors on their graduation from high school. Graduation is always a proud day for our school and communities and we had a large crowd at graduation. The seniors provided the rest of the student body tremendous leadership the entire year. We wish them the best as they pursue their goals and dreams. Congratulations, seniors! Budget for the 2016-17 School Year The proposed school district budget was approved at the April 11th School Board Meeting for the 2016-17 school year. The legislators set SSA at 2.25% for the FY17 year. Our tax rate for FY17 will be 13.215 which is about the same as last years’, which was 13.218 (per $1,000 of taxable valuation). The tax valuation for the district did increase by $13,261,807 for a total of $195,911,260. This represents a 7.26% increase in valuation. A 2.25% SSA only represents a $145/student increase. SSA provides school districts the opportunity to grow their budgets to keep up with increasing costs, such as fuel, utilities, salary and benefits. Boyer Valley had a decrease in certified enrollment this year so even though we will get the $145/pupil more the district will only get $28,649 in new money. It is impressive to see the great things going on in the BV classrooms!

Counselor’sCORNERBy Paul Marlin, MS/HS Guidance [email protected], @BVCounselor

Welcome to the summer edition of the Counselor’s Corner!

MS/HS School Supply Recycling Program

At the end of the school year when students are cleaning out their lockers, I see students throw away lots of perfectly good school supplies. I also see students dur-ing the school year who do not have school supplies like notebooks and folders that they need for their classes. As a result, three years ago I created the MS/HS School Supply Recycling Program. This year the program has been a great success and students in need really benefited from receiving free school supplies. I would like to thank all of the people who donated school supplies. Although the majority of the donations came from students, community members are also welcome to donate schools supplies as well. If you would like to donate school supplies in the future, you can feel free to drop off school supplies at the BVS office and I will make sure that the supplies get to students in need. The main supplies that students need are: folders, notebooks, pencils, and book bags. Next school year if there are families who have a difficult time affording school supplies, those students can come to see me to get school supplies while they last. I cannot guarantee that I will have enough school supplies for everyone; however I hope that this program is able to help some students in need. I am planning on continuing this program every year.

Thank You Scholarship DonorsI would like to personally thank all of the businesses, organiza-

tions, and people that donated scholarships to students at Boyer Valley this school year. The cost of college is continually rising, which makes scholarships more and more important to students graduating from high school. All of our students are incredibly fortunate to have so many people, businesses, and organiza-tions give so generously to provide scholarships to make going to college realistic and affordable. This year 55 scholarships were awarded to 16 seniors for a total of $186,281. Thank you so much for all of your continual support of our students!

Improving Resumes & Gaining Experience

The summer is an excellent time for high school students to improve their resumes by volunteering and gaining excellent job experience by job shadowing. I recommend that high school students dedicate time every summer to volunteer in their com-munity and job shadow careers that they are interested in. By volunteering not only do students help their community and people in need, but they also improve their resume which looks great on scholarships and college resumes. Job shadowing can give students valuable work experience and help them plan for their future. I know that students are often very busy over the summer, however dedicating even a small amount of time every few weeks can make a big difference.

Academy Fees & ShuttleAll Academy fees will be due at registration or during the 1st

week of school at the very latest. There is a $25 book rental fee for all classes, payable to Boyer Valley. There is also a one-time only matriculation fee of $35 for the first Academy/PSEO class that students take that is payable to Iowa Western. It is very important that we get all Academy fees paid right away so that everything runs smoothly. For more information please contact me at the school. All students who wish to ride the academy shuttle must fill out the registration sheet in the high school office and the student must have his or her parent’s signature in order to register for the shuttle. For more information please contact the office.

Online College ClassesOnline college level classes are available for students in grades

11 and 12, as well as TAG students in grades 9 and 10. Online classes are free for students, which also includes a free rental of a textbook. A one-time only matriculation fee of $35 for the first col-lege level class that a student takes may be required and that fee is payable to the particular college a student takes a class through.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all students (and their parents/guardians) who are taking online classes. The meeting will be on August 16 at 6pm in the auditorium. I will be going over a variety of different things, including: how to be successful with online classes, common problems that arise, textbook handout, and Chromebook handout. This is a very important meeting for students and their parents/guardians to attend. If you will not be able to attend this meeting, please contact me at the school at 712-643-2258 or [email protected].

Recent High School Graduates Students who just graduated from high school who are plan-

ning to attend college this coming fall need to make sure that they have completed their entire financial aid process. Students need to make sure they have accepted their financial aid awards, signed and submitted their Master Promissory Note (MPN), and completed financial aid entrance counseling on https://studentaid.ed.gov. Stu-dents will not receive financial aid until these steps are completed.

Starting this year, it is also the graduates’ responsibility to send their college transcripts to the particular college they are enrolling at in the fall. Below are links for graduates to complete their college transcript requests.

As President of the BV Booster Club, I would personally like to thank ALL of our supporters this past year. Whether through per-sonal or business donations during our membership drive, support at our soup supper and auction or through the purchase of our BV merchandise, the Booster Club is appreciative of the community’s support. 6 |SUMMER ‘16 District Newsletter

By Sarah Malone, Teammates Coordinator [email protected]

Parts of this update have been prepared by Rita Jensen, Team-Mates board member.

In September We held our Kick-off breakfast in both buildings. Matches met to

find a meeting time for the upcoming school year and catch up on what happened over the summer break.

Our local TeamMates chapter participated in the Coach’s Chal-lenge last October. Local businesses allowed their employees to wear their favorite sports jersey to work for a day, for a small contribution. The proceeds went to our new Scholarship Fund. We plan to contribute to the continuing education of our future se-niors. Thank you to all business and employers who participated. Program-wide $1.6 million scholarship dollars were awarded in May. There are over 550 seniors graduating program-wide.

We applied for and received a King Family Foundation Grant to purchase activities for matches to use during their weekly meet-ings. One tote was filled with craft supplies, the other with games. Matches have enjoyed using these items during their meetings.

In JanuaryTeamMates sponsored an ice cream social between basketball

games at the High School, as a part of National Mentoring Month. It was a great success. Thank you, Smitty’s, for donating the ice cream and accompaniments. You are great friends to TeamMates.

In FebruaryOur local TeamMates chapter was invited to a Creighton Bas-

ketball game on a Saturday afternoon. The game was enjoyed by mentors and mentees alike. Go Jays!

In AprilMentors and mentees enjoyed a pizza and painting party. We

met in the elementary art room after school and were guided through a painting project by Bracinda Blum of Woodbine.

TeamMates Board MembersDeana Swenson, Marilyn Davie, Beth Vogt, Rita Jensen, and

York, NE. The partnership meeting is for all Program Coordina-tors, Building Coordinators, Board Members and local TeamMates supporters. TeamMates 25th year celebration will kick-off at this meeting.

A mentor training will be held in August. If you are interested in becoming a mentor please go to www.teammates.org to apply or contact Sarah Malone for more information.

All Harrison county schools now have a TeamMates program. We will have the opportunity to attend a county-wide TeamMates event September 27th. Tom Osborne, TeamMates founder, will be speaking to mentors and TeamMates supporters. More details will be available at a later date.

TeamMates is inclusive of all students. Students work to build a social relationship with their mentor. We match based on com-mon interests using the mentor/mentee interview tools provided by TeamMates.

Thank you to all of you who contributed to our successes this year. We sincerely appreciate your enthusiastic support!

NurseNOTESBy Jodi Klein, RN School Nurse [email protected]

To all 6th grade parents of children entering into the seventh grade for 2016-17

The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Immunization, passed a new law requiring students enrolling in the seventh grade and if born on or after September 15th, 2000 shall receive a one-time dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine. The key points regarding the requirements of the new immunization law are that all adolescents entering 7th grade (approximately 13 years of age) will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine. This will help Iowa achieve and maintain high vaccination adolescent coverage levels while reducing the number of pertussis cases.

The Tdap vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects tetanus and diphtheria but also pertussis.

Tetanus, also known as “lockjaw”, causes painful muscle spasms, usually all over the body including the tightening of the jaw so the per-son cannot open their mouth or swallow.

Diphtheria can cause a thick covering in the back of the throat leading to breathing problems, paralysis or heart failure.

Pertussis, also known as “whooping cough” causes severe coughing spells, vomiting, rib fractures and complications such as pneumonia.

DENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR IOWA SCHOOLSAll children newly enrolled in an Iowa elementary or high school are

required to have a dental screening. This requirement was passed by the 2007 legislature and became effective July 1, 2008. The purpose of the dental screening requirement is to improve oral health of Iowa’s children. Dental screenings help with detection and treatment of dental disease, promote the importance of oral health for school readiness and learning; and contribute to statewide surveillance of oral health..

The requirement applies to kindergarten and ninth grade students only. Screening for kindergarten may be performed by a licensed dentist or dental hygienist only. Screenings performed by out-of state providers are allowed.

The Iowa Department of Public Health certificate Dental Screening is the only acceptable form. A screening for kindergarten is valid from age 3 years to 4 months after enrollment date. A screening for 9th grade is valid from one year prior to enrollment to four months after enrollment.

Your Dentist should have the Iowa dental form. Dental forms are also available in the nurse’s office. Please call Jodi Klein R.N. if any questions or concerns.
