About The ExhibitionThe Summer exhibition features reverred contemporary landscape, still life and figurative artists from

America alongside well known Russian and Ukrainian artists, as well as fine historical works from both regions. From lively plein air works to larger scale studio pieces, this exhibition will allow collectors and artists a chance to view and compare these contemporary and historical works side by side and to contemplate simiar

subject matters and strokes.

The selection of artists are classically trained representational artists that believe in the successful combina-tion of objective traditional training combined with expressive personal subjects, and often intuitive painterly strokes. Curated by Akhmed Salakhly (Repinart curator), and exhibiting artist/Co Curator Vanessa Rothe, the

fine collection boasts a wide variety of subjects spanning one hundred years time, and two vast continents.

“We share an admiration for “realist” art, especially Russian works, because they were the only ones to keep up the realist tradition when the world was going towards modernism”. says Salakhly.

“We admire both realist and impressionist art and many of us will often combine the two genres in order to create strong appealing works of art”. says Rothe

This diverse and talented group of contemporary painters from east to west have had impressive traditional training from such schools as the reknown St. Petersberg Academy of Arts, (Repin Institute), Penza Art

Institute, the Kharkov Art Institute, The Florence Academy of Art, Watts Atelier, Laguna College of Art and Design, and the Academy of Art in San Francisco in California, just to name a few. They have shown in top exhibitions worldwide from St.Petersberg, to Paris, to Los Angeles and have impressive resumés as well as strong bodies of work ranging from classical academy works to painterly plein air or impressionist pieces.

This catatlog serves as just a sampling of the works that will be at the exhibition.

Franz Bischoff (1864 - 1929) Painter, ceramist. Born in Austria in the small town of Bomen on January 14, 1864. Bischoff studied art in Vienna before immigrating to the U.S. in 1885. He worked as a decorator of china

in a New York factory and later continued this line of work in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Fostoria, Ohio. In 1892, he moved to Dearborn, Michigan where he produced ceramic works and taught china decorating.

He first visited California in 1900, but it was six years later before he and his family moved to Los Angeles. Bischoff established a studio in the Blanchard Building, and in 1908 built a palatial Italian Renaissance style studio-home in the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena. He brought with him a reputation of as one the nation’s great-est china painters; however, in California he turned to painting Impressionist landscapes of the desert around Palm Springs and the poppy fields near the Arroyo Seco. His subjects also include still lifes, harbor scenes of San Pedro, coastals, and Zion National Park (done on trip in 1928). His early works were mostly 13 x 19 in.,

softer and more muted than his later works, which often show the influences of Expressionism and the Fauves. He died at his Pasadena home on Feb. 5, 1929. Member: California Art Club.Exhibited: World’s Colombian Exposition, Chicago, 1893 (ceramics); Louisiana Purchase Expo, St. Louis, 1904 (ceramics).Awards: bronze

Alex Petrov

Born in Leningrad in 1951, Aleksander Petrov was a son of the well-known graphic artists, the Petrovs. As a child he was surrounded by art albums, artwork of his parents and their friends. It is no wonder then, that Alek-sandr went to the Art School at the Academy of Arts and later entered the Academy itself where he studied at the workshop of Andrey Mylnikov. In 1975 the artist graduated from the Academy and became a member of

the Union of Artists. From the mid-seventies, Petrov worked often on his own artistic language and, according to his own words, it took him fifteen years to forget and discard the manner of painting cultivated in him by

the Academy. Aleksandr Petrov became famous at the beginning of the perestroika period: he exhibited both in Russia and abroad and his works were bought for museums and private collections. The period of Petrov’s

most active artistic work was the time between the mid-eighties and the beginning of the 2000’s. After the year 2000, Petrov lived in his workshop in the House of Artists at Pesochnaya Embankment and was ill for quite a long time. The artist passed away in 2009. He left a compelling legacy behind him — the material we are

exploring — a legacy that is undoubtedly of great value for the history of Petersburg art.

Ray Roberts

“Split Rock Reflections, Laguna” 20x24” Oil

Award winning revered artist Ray Roberts was born in 1954, Ray grew up in an Orange County, California with orange groves, before the days of freeways and sprawling housing developments. It has given him an enduring affection for the untamed, undeveloped California of his youth. In 1969, after the early death of his father and

mother’s ill-health, Ray was sent to Orme School, a beautiful, ranch-style boarding school in the Arizona desert. Its strong fine arts program helped Ray to discover his artistic talent. He then attended the Art Center College

of Design in Pasadena, California, where he studied under John Asaro. He has also studied under Dan McCaw, Len Chmiel, Ned Jacob, and Mark Daily, among others. Art Center is where Ray also met his wife, impression-ist painter Peggi Kroll. While dating, the two of them would go out nightclubbing, to sketch rather than dance!

It has been a successful partnership ever since. Like many successful artists before him, Ray first pursued a career as an illustrator, establishing a studio in Los Angeles and then Scottsdale, Arizona. He got up the courage

to switch to fine art in 1992 and has never looked back. Ray and Peggi now live on a 20 acre ranch in Angels Camp, an old California gold rush town, surrounded by the oak-studded hills. More work can be viewed at

Vincent Xeus

Award Winning artist Vincent Xeus’ work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums throughout the world. Xeus’ works embrace, yet challenge the traditions of Italian and Dutch old master paintings with an exploration of contemporary practices and observations. His focus on the skills of painting and perfected tech-niques of old masters is revolutionized as he evokes gestural qualities, impasto style and raw emotions, culmi-

nating an aesthetic all of his own and serving as an avenue of internal and individual reflection.Xeus’ works beam with life -- daring drips and pours, impasto strokes and evocative poignant and chiaroscuro laden compositions. They absorb viewers in timeless, sentient windows teeming with emotion and vigor. The essence of his subjects are presented in ways unforeseen. Feelings of unease, refuge and enlightenment are all experienced. Xeus captures more than the core of his subjects. Each painting with their qualities of the ethe-real and oneiric sensibility harks to the subconscious mind and truly depicts the very essence of what makes

us individuals. Xeus presents alternative ways of seeing the temporal world. His work is a tour de force of all that was, is and will be. Xeus was born in China in 1981. His artistic journey began at a very young age. Xeus studied at University of California, Berkeley. He received a B.A. in Architecture in 2006 and founded Marque

Design in 2008. Xeus currently lives and works in Napa Valley, California.
