If all of that wasn’t enough to get you relaxed, with our ways to wellness feature, you’ll find the very best suggestions for making the most of your break. We’ll show you how to relax, how to spoil and pamper yourself and most importantly, relieve some of the stress that comes with the silly season.

On the fashion front, we bring you this season’s hot off the runway looks in perfect pastels, and show you ways to help survive summer in the city with romantic street wear that combines soft, feminine shapes with unexpected detail and style. grbacjuli

Local lady of luxury Juli Grbac is as graceful and elegant as her delicate couture would have you believe.Taking out the coveted title of winner: Project Runway Australia Season One (2008) might have been one of the most outstanding moments in this young ladies life, but Juli Grbac’s feet are firmly planted on the ground. From the most humble of beginnings, this darling of the Australian fashion industry has seen a meteoric rise to fame since winning the series in 2008.

While it seems that almost overnight, Grbac’s name became the one on everyone’s lips, its her slow and steady patience and charming manner that has payed dividends in launching her career, with Project Runway merely a forum for shining a light on her elegant and classic designs on a national and international level.

Since she was a young girl, Grbac had a healthy interest in fashion. Her mother, a dressmaker, was undoubtedly influential in her pursuit of sartorial satisfaction. “Mum is my inspiration and has taught me everything I know. She works tirelessly every day for me and is always by my side.” Making adjustments to her school uniforms, sewing and designing clothes in her mothers Moorooka basement, Juli developed an eye for delicate detail, pattern making and cutting from a young age.

What was initially a hobby soon became a dedicated direction by way of a commitment to study at Gateway TAFE to develop and grow her natural talent. Upon completion, the ever-ambitious Grbac chased the dream to London where she enrolled in the prestigious Central St Martins College (whose alumni include Stella McCartney, John Galliano, Pheobe Philo and Christopher Kane).

Before winning her spot on the Foxtel reality show Project Runway, Juli had already chalked up an impressive fashion resume. Working with the prestigious Voyage boutique in London, the always down-to-earth Grbac wanted to return home to hone her design talents where she worked as a hand sewer for Brisbane’s own international fashion exports Easton Pearson.

Starting her own label ‘Grbac’ in 2002, Juli then opened a store in the TC Beirne Centre in Fortitude Valley’s Brunswick Street Mall during which time she was wholesaling her beautiful garments to upmarket boutiques in Brisbane. At the encouragement of friends and family, Juli entered and consequently took out the title of winner on Project Runway, winning a place at Melbourne Fashion Week. “I take a real business approach to my label and when this opportunity came up, I thought it could take me to another level and give me exposure that is usually very very hard to get” she says.

It was then that the industry took notice, as did the A-list with local, national and international celebrities donning her elegant and immaculate designs.

Grbac might have become a household name overnight after winning the reality series, but her achievements are the result of years of painstaking and unwavering commitment to her craft. “For me it (Project Runway) was a way to further my career,

not become a TV star.”

Maintaining her humility and grace in the face of unforseen success and demand for her range of glamorous couture, Juli has managed to eke out an exceptional start to her fashion career. Since then challenges have come thick and fast for this innovative young designer. But with dedication and commitment, Juli Grbac can now boast numerous independent and upmarket national and international boutiques as stockists of her designs. When asked to describe her design ethos, Grbac says the word “feminine” pops to mind. But she adds, “I also like to think of my pieces as chic. I don’t follow trends too much. I make sure about 60 per cent of my collection is made up of timeless pieces, then I inject a bit of ‘trend’ for the rest.”

Timeless was certainly the brief for the most important garments Juli has created to date. As a quick civil service at the registrars office amidst the mayhem of Project Runway in 2008 didn’t allow for the appropriate attire, Juli designed and created three unique and elegant dresses for the most important day of her life: her magical and sumptuous wedding ceremony to her sweetheart and husband Paul in 2009. “Paul is tall, amazing, gorgeous and supportive, I really couldn’t ask for more” she says of her husband.

All garments she wore on the day were painstakingly hand-sewn by Juli, her mother and sister in the months leading up to the event, whilst she still continued to deliver on existing commercial orders. “Wedding gowns are for the happiest day of your life, so they have to be sewn with love and good thoughts around them. I don’t like to work on wedding gowns unless I’m in a good mood” she muses.

It’s nice to see that the fashion industry, which is often seen as a dog eat dog world, rewards a lady with the beauty, charm and family values such as Juli Grbac.

do you collect anything?I collect daxies, glass and ceramic. All my friends buy them for me and now my home looks like a mad ‘cat lady’ home minus the cat.

If you could be anyone else for a day - who would you be and why?Brad Pitt - just to see what life would be like being that famous, rich and good looking.

Living or passed, who are three people you would invite to a dinner party and why?I would go for three very different types - Nelson Mandela to try and understand his courage, Marilyn Monroe so I could get some answers and my dad to show him what became of his son (he passed when I was young).

If you had the ability to time travel: would you pick past or future and why?I would pick the future as it’s the great unknown.

Lastly, desert island Cd’s? you’re only allowed three!Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson and Lady GaGa - I like to dance!

what do you wear to bed?Sleep shorts & tee’s and my dog betty who keeps me warm.

what keeps you awake at night? My dogs bad breath - well I think it’s my dogs!

what constitutes the perfect pair of PJ’s?Fabrication is vital, fit is important and the colour/print can change ones mood.

Tell us about your passions?I love animals, family and work. Not in that order.

what do you fear the most?Spiders -I am an ambassador for the RSPCA, but have requested an ‘out-clause’ for spiders.

If you hadn’t become involved in the fashion industry, what would you be doing right now?I always wanted to be a vet, but I’m not clever enough... so perhaps a photographer as it’s more creative.

Tell us about Betty and Butch, your dogs?Butch is, for want of a better word a “mutt” from the RSPCA and is the most gentle and friendliest dog, while Betty is a daxie from a breeder and is very posh

and not as sociable, but she’s still a real character.

How would you describe your personal sense of style?

Very casual, in fact too casual. I am very lazy and tend to wear clothes for comfort rather

than style - that’s why I make PJ’s.

who do you admire in a professional sense and why?

I love Alannah Hill’s style - as a brand and a person she has stuck to her guns and always designs clothes she would wear.

what was your latest splurge? An African Safari Adventure - It was 5 star luxury, but still getting back to mother nature.

australian pioneer of pretty PJ’s Peter alexander is a national and international success story. with a 20 plus year career in dressing

for bed, this self-made man of substance and style shares with us some thoughts on passions, pets and of course, PJ’s.

TIme To geT IN TouCHSummer is around the corner, there is no better time to get in touch

with your body, mind and spirit by listening to your body’s needs. Understanding these needs is the key to good health. Feeding you body with

foods and supplements that will energise and nourish us is vital for optimal well being. Accessing your needs doesn’t need to complicated or expensive.

There is no need for fancy, complicated exercise equipment or long term contracts with a gym to partake in simple, daily exercise activities.

There are many activities that we perform during the day that can become part of our exercise routine.

“Output must outweigh input”. This is the simple motto to assist in weight loss and improving health. We have to increase the activities performed daily to have an

impact on weight loss. Instead of taking the elevator up or down, walk. Make two or three trips to unpack the car after your grocery shopping trip, instead of one.

Walk to the local store and back instead of driving there. Increase activity - cost saving - burn more calories.

Assess what your diet consists of and look at the ongoing ailments that you may suffer from, visit a health food store or a natural health practitioner

and query how you can improve your health and feel great.

This holistic approach that we value at Healthy Life used in conjunction with our naturapath, massage therapy and reflexology options are the ideal way to create a better you.

are you reaLLy BeINg Served? The wonder of modern technology has transformed the way we shop and do business. Although the extra convenience and flexibility are a win for the consumer, it often means a decrease in personalised service. MBF understand that many customers still value face-to-face service. Some health funds are placing less emphasis on personal service but “We’re committed to giving customers access to a variety of service options, including a high level of personal service from each of our retail centres,” says Chris Smedley the Qld General Manager. “Our customers still have the opportunity to make over-the-counter claims, which isn’t always possible from other private health insurance providers.”MBF has been providing private health insurance services in the Indooroopilly area for over 20 years and understands the importance of having ‘people on the ground’.“The in’s and out’s of health insurance can sometimes be confusing, so having staff on hand who understand health insurance – and understand the local community – is highly valued by our customers. We’re able to explain to customers what they are and are not covered for, and how they can make the most out of their private health insurance,” Mr Gannon, MBF Indooroopilly’s Retail Manager says. “Our customers expect and deserve this level of service, and our staff are committed to helping them get through what can often be a difficult time.” Visit the MBF team at Indooroopilly for expert assistance with your health insurance needs.mBf, located on level 1.
