Xavier HigH ScHool Prayer

Loving Father,

We ask you to protect the

students, faculty and staff

of Xavier High School.

Guide us to salvation by

following the example of

Jesus Christ, your Son.

Inspire us with your grace,

to seek both academic

success and spiritual

wisdom as we use our gifts

and talents in service to

others. Help us to find the

strength and passion to be

leaders and pioneers like

Theodore James Ryken,

the Xaverian Brothers and

those who founded our

school. May we, in turn,

accept the challenge to

spread the Word of God

and make the world a

better place for all people.

We ask this, through

Christ, our Lord.

— Amen.

St. Francis Xavier

— Pray for us.

Dear Members of the Xavier Community,

As I write this letter, another year at Xavier has drawn to a close. Our two hundred seniors have

graduated and our underclassmen have taken their final exams and anxiously look forward to a

welcome summer break.

As the building quiets down, I am reminded of the many good things that were accomplished

during the spirit-filled months of the school year. It is easy to look back with pride on our senior

college acceptances, our National Merit Commended students, athletic awards in football, wrestling

and ultimate Frisbee, our national championship engineering team, and the countless hours of

service performed by our faculty and students, including a service trip to New Orleans last April and

a service trip to Appalachia to be undertaken later in June. The list could go on, but underlying all of

this is the daily dedication of our committed faculty and staff whose efforts in the classroom, on the

field, and with our other activities strive to develop the young men entrusted to their care and help

them assimilate in their lives the meaning of our school motto “Be a Man.” We speak frequently in

school of the Xaverian values of humility, simplicity, compassion, trust and zeal, and we hope these

words are taken to heart as guiding principles for our young men as they continue on in their future

lives.

As always, all of us at Xavier are very grateful to all of you who support us in so many ways

through your contributions to our annual fund, your membership in the St. Francis Xavier

Society, and through volunteer efforts through our Alumni Association and our Home and School

Association. Your contributions help us maintain a quality Catholic educational program, provide

tuition assistance to over 260 of our students, and close the $1400 per student gap between our

tuition and our operating expenses.

I hope you enjoy reading in the pages that follow articles about some of the many aspects of

Xavier life that you make possible. God bless you each day for all you do for Xavier.

Sincerely in Christ,

Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X.

Headmaster

As some of you may know, two of our recent graduates,

Christopher Danko and Francis Rowland, composed a

Xavier High School Prayer which we recite at the end of

each school day. Please pray it along with us.

The Xavier High School Falcons, representing the State of Connecticut at the Third Annual Real World Design Challenge™ (RWDC) national

aviation design competition, took the top prize for designing a next-generation airplane wing that maximizes fuel efficiency and enhances performance. The award was presented Saturday, April 16 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. President Obama sent a letter congratulating all of the students who participated on their achievement in completing the Challenge. The Xavier team was mentored by Sikorsky Innovations and Pratt & Whitney. The Xavier High School team won the State Competition and represented Connecticut in the National Challenge for the second year in a row.

Xavier Mathematics/Science teacher Michael Humphreys, Xavier Class of ’04, who is also the moderator of Xavier’s Engineering Club, wrote to us in the early hours following the competition, “Just wanted to thank all of you who helped the team WIN the national competition down here in Washington DC (Saturday)!!! Your support at all levels did not go unnoticed and I appreciated the time you took to help.”

Engineering Club Wins National Real World Design Challenge

The winning team was coached by Mr. Humphreys and State Coordinator Christine Gemelli. The student team members are: Chris Muckle ’12 (Madison), Mike Leon ’11 (Portland), Miraj Rahematpura ’12 (Middletown), Mario Chris ’13 (Storrs), Giovanni Sabato ’12 (Middletown), Andrew Moeller ’12 (Northford) and John Voelker ’12 (Southington). The state of Washington came in 2nd and Kansas 3rd.

“The students are the real stars. They are going

to be the ones creating the exciting technological

advancements of the future, and the Real World

Design Challenge is giving them the tools to help

unleash that creative potential today.”

Ken Bowersox, VP of Mission Assurance and Astronaut Safety.

The Connecticut team was supported by the Office for Workforce Competitiveness, (OWC) under the leadership of Christine Gemelli. “In order for Connecticut and the nation to successfully compete in a 21st century economy, we must grow a new generation of highly skilled engineers and innovators,”

Gemelli said. “The Real World Design Challenge provides an important opportunity for high school students to better understand the challenges the best and brightest engineers face every day.” OWC has supported a Connecticut team in the Real World Design Challenge national competition since the program’s inception, three years ago. This was the second year Xavier won the state competition to go on to the nationals. “To have our state team win the national challenge after only its second appearance is phenomenal,” Gemelli added.

The team was praised for their National Championship by CT 1st District U.S. Congressman John Larson for their “tremendous accomplishment.” Congressman Larson was the guest speaker at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce monthly breakfast meeting. Chamber President Larry McHugh, who also serves as chairman of the board of trustees at the University of Connecticut and was Xavier High School’s first football coach from 1963 to 1983, and David P. Hess, President of Pratt & Whitney, joined in the praise for the team during their remarks to the hundreds in attendance at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell.

The Third Annual Real World Design Challenge is a national aviation design competition for high school students run by a public-private partnership with the goal of increasing the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. More than 450 Schools from 28 States and the District of Columbia competed in the challenge and the top three teams presented

Robert Dodenhoff ’12 American Legion Boys’ State Delegate

Ken McClellan, Scholarship Coordinator of American

Legion Post 75, Middletown, CT announced that Xavier junior Robert M. Dodenhoff, Jr of Middletown has been selected as a delegate to the American Legion Department of Connecticut Boys’ State Program this summer at Eastern Connecticut State University.

To be considered for the program, each young man must illustrate specific qualities such as leadership, loyalty, and community and school service, and he must have completed his high school junior year. Local Legion post select a candidate to attend Boys State, which currently exists in all Legion departments (except Hawaii). In the actual selection of boys as citizens of Boys State, merit and ability alone are the basis for selection. Boys’ State programs are designed to teach young men about the function of government, elected office and citizenship. Since it was first organized in 1935, more than a million high school boys have attended The American Legion Boys State program to experience a week that can change a lifetime. n

Victor Wu scored 2400 in his SAT testing, which is the maximum possible. The exam consists of three parts: Critical

Reading, Mathematics and Writing. The scores from each section can range from 200 to 800, so the best possible total score is 2400. The average score for each section is roughly 500, so the average total score is about 1500. Less than one-tenth of one percent of students achieve a perfect SAT score. Victor also scored an 800 on the SAT subject test in World History.

The SAT is one of the criteria that colleges and universities use when making their selection of new students. We offer our congratulations to Victor on his impressive accomplishments as a Governor’s Scholar and in his SAT testing.

Governor’s Scholar of Connecticut for 2011

Headmaster Brother Brian Davis and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue have announced that Victor Wu has been named a Governor’s Scholar of Connecticut for 2011.

In a letter to Victor from the Chair of the Governor’s Scholars Committee Mr. Robert Eberle said, “Congratulations!

Victor Wu ’12 Perfect score in saTThe Governor’s Scholars Committee of the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) has reviewed your application and essay and selected you as one of the thirty Governor’s Scholars of Connecticut for 2011. You were chosen from an entry pool of the top juniors in Connecticut’s high schools and you will be honored along with the other designees at the Governor’s Scholars Luncheon. The Governor’s Scholars Committee and Big Y World Class Markets, sponsor of the program, are pleased with your selection and look

forward to hosting you at the Aqua Turf Club on May 19th.”Victor says, “I intend to study philosophy and political

science in college.” He has been involved in a variety of student activities during his three years at Xavier. In an autobiographical statement, he continued, “I value intellectual discussion, which I am able to participate in as a member of my school’s debate team. Most importantly, though, I’m proud to say I am a student of truth. I enjoy asking questions and examining fundamental reasons for why things are, why people believe them. I enjoy finding answers. There is a certain indescribable satisfaction in understanding something more deeply.” n

CLASS OF 2011

May 22, 2011 — The 200 newest graduates and the faculty of Xavier High School processed into the Kohs gymnasium that

Sunday morning for the final official assembly of the members of the Class of 2011, their Commencement Exercises. Brother Thomas Ryan, C.F.X. was Master of Ceremonies for the event. He introduced Father Gregory Galvin, the Director of Vocations for the Norwich Diocese, who offered the Commencement Invocation.

His Excellency, Bishop Michael Cote, the spiritual leader of the Norwich Diocese, as well as the Class of 2011 and their parents, guardians, relatives, friends, special guests, teachers, counselors, and staff was once again an honored guest for this forty-fifth commencement exercise.

Brother Ryan said, “At yesterday’s Baccalaureate Mass Fr. Galvin read these words from St. John’s Gospel: “And Jesus said to his disciples, “Where I am going, you know the way.” But Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”

Since a commencement exercise represents both an ending and a new beginning, it’s natural for there to be a bit of Thomas in all of us, but especially the graduates – a natural anxiety about knowing the way that lies ahead. But for the past four years the members of the Class of

2011, with all their talents and gifts, their unique characteristics and personalities, their successes and at times disappointments, have been preparing for this day of new beginnings.

And if Xavier has done its job properly and prepared them well for the next stage of their lives, then, unlike Thomas, they do know the way. Then the words from the final sentence of last evening’s gospel are most appropriate: “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones.” I know it is the hope and prayer of all on this stage as well as all in this gathering that the lives of these young men, as they continue on their way to do these greater works, will be scripture-centered, filled with life and goodness, blessed and made holy.”

Brother Ryan introduced the Salutatorian for the Class of 2011, Oliver Neal, to formally welcome all to this forty-fifth commencement. (See the article on page 9.)

Mr. Brendan Donohue, Xavier’s Principal, then introduced the members of the Class of 2011 to receive their diplomas from Bishop Cote. (See pages 6-9 for the list of Graduates.)

Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. presented special awards to those students who

CLASS OF 2011

have distinguished themselves in academic and co-curricular areas. (See box below.)

A special award was presented to the twenty-three alumni fathers the graduating seniors who are themselves Xavier graduates. Brother Brian presented the younger of the two graduates with a ribbon on which hangs a medal of the Xavier seal which the son placed on the shoulders of his father. Engraved on the back of the medal are the names of both father and son as well as their years of graduation. (See photo on back cover.)

There was one award this year for a member of our faculty who at the close of this school year will complete twenty-five years of service to Xavier. The inscription reads “In appreciation for twenty-five years of dedicated service to Xavier High School.” Congratulations to Ms. Jayne Vitale (photo at right).

His Excellency, Bishop Michael Cote, shepherd of the Diocese of Norwich and Headmaster Brother Brian, each offered their best wishes to the graduates.

At the end of each commencement ceremony, it is customary to invite the highest-ranking member of the graduating class to give the valedictory address, the formal farewell to the school on behalf of his classmates. The Valedictorian for the Class of 2011 is Patrick J. Lenehan. (See article on page 9.)

One impressive statistic about the Class of 2011, as of May 20th, its members have collectively received over $5.1 million in college grants and scholarships.

At the conclusion of the Commencement Exercises, Fr. Galvin led the assembly in the closing

Benediction and the Xavier High School prayer. The prayer is the product of a school-wide effort in each religion class in the fall. The prayer chosen to represent the school was composed by seniors Christopher Danko and Francis Rowland.

Brother Ryan closed with these words, “And finally – a few minutes ago you heard Brother Brian end his remarks to the graduates with a sentence he has used every Monday this year at the close of the school-wide morning prayer — “God bless your day.” To the graduates, and

speaking for everyone else on this stage, I would simply add — God bless your lives, each and every day.”

The Xavier Loyalty and Service Award is the most prestigious the school confers. Brother ryan said, “For passion and perseverance this young man has few equals. As the Student Activities Council Secretary, he worked tirelessly on behalf of the student body. he spearheaded the Black hole t-shirt campaign. his membership on the Peer Ministry team necessitated countless hours working on freshmen community days, Sophomore Saturdays, and liturgies and prayer services. he was one of the two senior speakers at this year’s junior retreat.

“i asked Mr. Cerreta to predict what this impressive young man might prioritize as his outstanding, positive memories of senior year. he wagered the list would be topped by his participation on Xavier’s state championship football team. Second and third place memories most likely could include cashing out

tina Charles, the former uCOnn star, at the Polo Outlet at Clinton Crossing or perhaps upgrading his parking spot on the final day of school to the administrative level, perhaps to be closer to the terminal. his genuine concern and dedication will be sorely missed. Our loss is Assumption College’s gain. it is my pleasure to announce the 2011 recipient of the Xavier loyalty and Service Award, the son of Sharon and James of Clinton, James F. Mcnamara, Jr.” n

Reverend Gregory Galvin, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Norwich celebrated the Graduation Liturgy on the evening before the

Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2011. As the Graduation Liturgy came to a close, Headmaster, Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue shared publicly some of the honors awarded to the members of our Graduating class.

This year, seven of our seniors have been named NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS. Michael R. Breault, Patrick J. Lenehan, Brendan G. Lewis, Devin L. McManus, John O. Neal, Mark L. Scalzo, and Ronald E. Weir, Jr.

The COLLEGE BOARD and 2010-2011 NATIONAL HISPANIC RECOGNITION PROGRAM has awarded a certificate for Excellence in Academic Achievement to Devin L. McManus.

The BROTHER CELESTINE MEDAL is awarded each year to students who, upon the completion of the academic year, have an overall final average of A with no final average grade less than an A- in their major subjects. This prestigious award, which a student can be given only once during his four years at Xavier, is the highest academic tribute that the school bestows. The award is named after Brother Celestine Killigrew who taught history and Religion at Xavier in the early 1960’s and died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. In the previous three years, 20 members of the class of 2011 have earned this honor. This year, Kenneth Kyle Bussmann, Michael G. Leon and Luke S. Strand are recognized for having earned this honor.

THE DAVID HANFORD BRANDT SCHOLARSHIP has been endowed by the family of David who was a member of the Xavier class of 1986 and is awarded to a student who is recognized as the most outstanding MYARC volunteer. The recipient this year is Joseph S. Garabedian.

THE BRYAN CHVISUK SCHOLARSHIP has been established by the family of Bryan, a member of the class of 1990. It is awarded to a senior who has distinguished himself as an outstanding student of science during his four years at Xavier. This year’s

THE MARK SCHAEFFER SCHOLARSHIP is given in memory of Mark Erwin Schaeffer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Otto E. Schaefer of North Branford, who was member of Xavier’s class of 1979. The intent of this scholarship is “to reward an all-around Xavier MAN, a scholar and an athlete who has actively demonstrated that he has realized that a Xavier education is a Christian education, one that requires service and dedication to one’s fellow human beings.” This year’s recipient is Paul B. Drabinski.

THE JAMES V. TILLONA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP has been established in loving memory of Jamie Tillona, a proud member of the Xavier High School Class of 1996. Jamie was a loving son and brother who through his loyal and sincere friendships brought happiness to those whom he encountered. This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who, through his academic success, and his commitment to the Xaverian community, best exemplifies the hopes and aspirations, which were held for Jamie. Alumni welcome new members at picnicin May the seniors gathered in the kohs gym for their first

rehearsal for graduation. Mr. Phil Franklin ’73, president of the Xavier Alumni Association, spoke to them as they would become members of the Alumni in less than a week. he pointed out that “you will become members of a fraternity that is made up of teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers

— just about every occupation you can think of. your class will bring the total number of men who have graduated from Xavier high School to over 8,000. We look forward to you bringing new ideas as well as your participation and support in keeping Xavier strong for years to come.”

the barbecue picnic following rehearsal has become an Alumni Association tradition. Pictured above are Alums Joe lane ’95, d.J. thompson ’75 and dan Pickett ’86 manning the grill. Several alumni fathers were able to join their sons for the picnic. n

Lenehan and Neal Lead Xavier Class of 2011valedictorian for the Class of

2011 is Patrick J. Lenehan, the son of Mary and kevin lenehan of Cheshire. ranked number one in a class of 200 seniors, Patrick received a perfect 4.33 grade point average – scoring an A+ in every course, freshmen through senior year, while taking Xavier’s most demanding curriculum, including nine AP classes. A member

of both the national and Spanish honor Societies, a Brother Celestine Award winner, and the 2010 recipient of the Connecticut Association of School’s governor’s Scholar Award, Patrick also excelled in sports. A four-year member of both the basketball and baseball teams, he served as a senior captain of each of these squads this year. his athletic prowess undoubtedly led to two outstanding distinctions – his reception of the 2011 Falcon Achievement Award at the graduation liturgy, his selection as a Scholar Athlete by the new haven tap-off Club and his mastery of “the dougie” at many of Xavier’s social functions.

Pat’s guidance counselor, Mrs. tomasiello, wrote: “it would be easy to be swept up in the wave of awards, accolades, honors and compliments Pat has received, but his greatest gift is his ability to remain humble, grounded, and focused on what he has to do rather than on what he has done. his intelligence helps him to be a better athlete. his strength and conditioning allow him to study for long hours. his leadership ability helps him make those around him better. he inspires other students to do their very best.”

Pat was accepted at dartmouth, Columbia, duke, Johns hopkins, georgetown, and Boston College’s honors program. this fall he will begin the BA, BS and Md combined eight-year

program in Medicine at the university of Connecticut at Storrs and the university of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Salutatorian for the Class of 2011 is John Oliver Neal, the son of Sarah and david neal of haddam, he ranked second in a class of 200 seniors. having taken the most rigorous and demanding academic schedule that a student can elect, he belonged to the national and latin honor Societies as well as that elite group of Brother Celestine Award winners for academic excellence, and participated in nine AP courses. his high school transcript contains more A+’s than many of us would see in a lifetime, including the Chinese course he took this year in lieu of a free period. And at the graduation liturgy he was the recipient of the Michael Schilke Award conferred on an outstanding senior mathematics student.

When not in a classroom, Oliver spends a great deal of time on the water. A four-year member of our sailing team, he led the squad as captain this year. in his college recommendation letter for him, Mr. richard Magner ’69 commented that “Oliver does little if anything to attract attention to himself. he is an outstanding sailor and since the sailing team practices miles from the school, few if any other students are aware of the team’s schedule and success. his coach feels he could compete at the collegiate level.”

Oliver was accepted at Boston College, Fordham university, and Providence College. he will attend Queen’s university in Ontario, Canada, one of the most well-known research-intensive institutions in north America. n

In March, Xavier hosted the Middlesex County Math League’s annual awards banquet. The math team had another excellent year on both the varsity and JV levels. The varsity team was

narrowly defeated by Hand this year to come in second place in the league for the year, while the JV team took first place in the JV league. The teams were led by seniors Ron Weir, Oliver Neal and Mike Breault, juniors Tyler Ceste, Sherif Eldirany, Miraj Rahematpura and Victor Wu, sophomores Mario Chris, Zachary Ziobrowski and Nate Clark, and freshmen Ruban Hussein, Jack Kessler and Brian Wilcox.

Mu Alpha ThetaXavier now has a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math

Honor Society. Prior to the league-wide banquet a brief induction ceremony and reception was held to honor the 18 students who were inducted into the international high school and two-year college society. To be eligible for membership, students must have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and be enrolled in a fifth semester (Pre-Calculus or above). In addition, the student must maintain at least an A- average in these courses throughout his time at Xavier.

The following students were inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta: Greg Brown, Jason Cain, Tyler Ceste, Mario Chris, Sherif Eldirany, Kristof Fogarasi, George Gilbert, Rowan Lucey, Samuel Magaziner, John Marriott, Emmett McConville, Andrew Moeller, Mason Passavant, Miraj Rahematpura, Michele SchianoDiCola, Peter Tomasiello, Akshay Vig, and Victor Wu. The recent whirlwind Xavier trip to Italy was filled with memorable sights and moments. One highlight was

captured in this picture of Pope Benedict XVI blessing the crowd as he travelled though St. Peter Square in the entrance procession for Mass on Easter Sunday. The photo was taken by Dean of Faculty Formation Peter Langevin. A few other photo memories are from the camera of our Fine Arts and Foreign Language Chair Ms Jayne Vitale who arranged the Xavier Italy trip in April. Ms Vitale and Mr. Langevin were the official chaperones on the excursion. Math and science teacher Mr. Michael Ricciuti also took part as a tourist on the trip.

The photos show that the weather cooperated; while the looks on faces and amazing sights give just a glimpse of the tremendous experience the trip afforded. n

Pilgrims land at Buncomb County, NC

This spring break I decided that instead of relaxing at home with my friends I would join Pilgrim Fellowship (PF)

on their annual mission trip. PF is a non-profit organization that focuses on their annual mission trip, and has meetings on Sunday nights which many shoreline high school students attend. This being my first PF experience, I was a little apprehensive about the trip but decided it was the right choice.

This year’s trip was in Buncomb County, North Carolina, which is in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. The mission trip is based on repairing homes for people that cannot do it themselves for whatever reason. My client, Chuck, was 51 and on disability. He had lost his ability to walk years ago, so the daily tasks of cleaning around the house and laundry were not being done sufficiently.

One of the things I found interesting about Chuck and the rest of the clients PF helped in Buncomb is they all had faith. Whether Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish they all had a very strong faith that they wanted to share with us kids. On my worksite Chuck led us in prayer every morning thanking God for our safety and generosity. Even with his bad circumstances, he still had faith in God. He told us never to give up on your relationship with God, and I think that advice hit some of us because we saw the horrendous living quarters of Chuck.

Our job on our worksite was to repair the roof and siding and build a deck. I took the responsibility of working on the deck most of the week with the help from our contractor A.J Miller. Each worksite has a project manager or contractor that has experience in the carpentry field.

We soon realized that the physical labor of repairing the house was not important. It was necessary that we built these things with a long-term mindset and correctly, but the relationships and overall change in Chuck had more value to us.

What we did in North Carolina was not about the quality construction work, especially because high school students did it with little guidance from the adults. But it was about the hope we inspired in our clients to get up in the morning and try to change their current situations. Chuck told us on the last day that we gave him the hope to clean up around the house everyday and make a real effort to change his life positively.

Many of the reasons I went on the trip were not the same reasons I had when I left. I went because I had been told that it was a good experience from past PFers and to have a good time with friends. But as I was leaving I realized the selflessness and generosity involved in the trip. It was just as influential for me as it was for Chuck. I had a great experience on the trip this year and cannot wait to sacrifice my spring break again next year for this worthy cause. n

The team will be representing Connecticut in the National History Day competition during June 12-16 at the University of Maryland.

You may view their winning website at http://40487190.nhd.weebly.com. There is a tremendous amount of information in a very easy to read format including videos relevant to the Peace Conference.

From the http://ct.nhd.org website, History Day in Connecticut is part of the National History Day program. This annual competition engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of researching and interpreting a historical topic of their choice related to an annual theme. Working individually or in small groups, students are encouraged to find primary and secondary sources on their subject through research in libraries and museums, interviews, and visits to historic sites.

History Day gives students an opportunity to look outside of a textbook or classroom and step into the shoes of a historian. Students will gain experience with skills like creating an argument, conducting research, critical thinking, reading and writing, interpreting primary and secondary sources, using evidence to support a thesis, and relating to a theme. They explore the ideas of historical perspective as well as diplomatically working with others throughout their research.

Students use their research to create a project to share with the public at one of five district History Day competitions held across Connecticut in the spring. Local historians, educators, and other professionals judge the students’ entries, and winners are eligible to participate at the state competition held in late April or early May. State winners are invited to attend the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland with over 2,000 other students from across the country. n

Mrs. Charpentier Selected for Summer Biology Institute

The UConn Office of Early College Programs announced that Xavier Biology teacher Mrs. Linda

Charpentier is one of only seven CT faculty members invited to participate in ECE’s first ever Summer Biology Institute. Mrs. Charpentier will be joined by instructors from Sacred Heart Academy, Bridgeport Aquaculture, Sports and Medical Sciences Academy, RHAM High School, Waterford High, and Westhill High School who were chosen from a competitive range of applicants. Xavier High School has expanded its participation in UConn’s Early College Experience program and now has over 120 students enrolled in the program. The UConn credits earned are transferable to many other colleges and universities.

The institute will give ECE Biology instructors an opportunity to expand their understanding of structural biology by offering hands-on workshops with protein structure, x-ray crystallography, protein purification, and more. The program will be taught by Dr. Victoria L. Robinson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Co-Head of the Protein X-ray Facility. An expert in protein structure, she has received the National Science Foundation’s “Faculty Early Career Development Award.” The award honors those who integrate research and education, and is the foundation’s most prestigious award.

Thomas Abbott, UConn ECE Faculty Coordinator for Biology said, “Given the nature of the job, it can be difficult, if not impossible for high school science instructors to keep current with respect to their content areas and laboratory practices. Knowing this, the creation of short summer research modules, in the laboratories of scientists that actually generate the new content, in theory should make the learning more meaningful and useful to them back in their classrooms.” n

18 Xavier Today

This past February break, a group of Xavier juniors was lucky enough to spend our week in a place many probably wouldn’t particularly want to be: New Orleans. We in New

England know it mainly as that city hit by Hurricane Katrina, five or so years ago. We headed off on a service trip with no clear idea of what we’d encounter. We were told that this wasn’t a vacation, the area was bad, we might get robbed, and so on. But what we saw and experienced was rewarding and honestly hilarious beyond what any of us expected.

Our trip started off as pretty casual and upbeat. On our very first night, we met a friendly group of Canadians, also high school volunteers, who managed to convince us that Justin Bieber had gone to their high school. It wasn’t true, but they were pretty cool. Throughout the trip, from the rambling, incoherent security guard to the pick-up truck-driving nun, we continued to meet people who were more than happy to welcome us and share their stories with us (sometimes a little more than we perhaps wanted to know). There was definitely an aura of hospitality and talkativeness that we frankly might have been unused to.

Perhaps related to this general enthusiasm was the ubiquitous presence of excitement and music we found in urban New

A New (and Memorable) Experience in New OrleansXavier junior Victor Wu prepared this account of a service trip arranged through our Campus Ministry Office.

Orleans. Walking the streets at night (relatively safely), every bar and restaurant along the way boomed with live bands and loud jazz. Even on Sunday night, the roads of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter were packed with people, music, and bright neon lights. Even the prayer service where we stopped reflected this culture. Imagine the Xavier Masses or Prayer Services, except with incredibly lively singing and R&B music incorporated into literally every aspect, every reading.

But more on task, our real job in New Orleans was to help rebuild houses. Working with a non-profit called St. Bernard’s Project, we were assigned to work on homes for people who had lost theirs in Katrina. Named after a devastated parish, or basically a county in Louisiana, the organization matched us up with two superb young supervisors who explained how to do the basic construction work. We got to put these newly learned skills to the test on two different homes. Honestly, you might think it’s kind of sketchy that they would trust a group of random volunteers to build satisfactory houses, but hey, so did we. We like to think we did an excellent job insulating, putting up drywall, and mudding. However, even tasks so simple as layering mud over gaps or cutting out drywall are harder and more tedious than you’d expect.

Despite the 9-to-5 work it was certainly a satisfying seven days for all of us, knowing we were helping Katrina victims. I for one also was happy that I gained some basic knowledge in construction. Hard work has its own rewards.

Work aside, though, this trip was simply fun. New Orleans was certainly not as rundown as we thought, and we were not in immediate danger of getting lost, mugged or harmed. There wasn’t exactly a lot of food, but we managed. We’ll never forget that Dollar General convenience store or our great appreciation for Church’s fried chicken. The $13-a-day accommodations were by no means luxurious. Sleeping on structurally-unsound triple bunk beds piled to the ceiling was certainly an interesting experience. We may not have had a concrete plan for where we were going or what we were doing, but we made the most of it. Some of the best laughs and conversations we had were shared over nightly games of cards (which Mr. Royce habitually failed to win). Even the daily serious reflections easily lasted over an hour, to everybody’s surprise. And I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t mind playing another game of improvised indoor soccer (maybe with a real ball next time?). There’s too much for me even to recount it all here in this brief article. But for the record, I must have laughed more in that one week than in any other time in recent memory.

Dylan Baker, Jon Brochinsky, Ryan Christian, Matt Craig, Ryan Craig, Matt Dekoeyer Mike Funaro, Mitch Kendrioski, Andrew Moeller, and I were the ten juniors who made this journey to New Orleans. We walked into this trip virtually strangers, with each of us knowing almost nothing about the other. As the week progressed and we spent time working, eating, and relaxing side-by-side, the character of our group changed. I got to know individuals who I would have never talked to in the hallway, or seen in my classes, or met in an outside activity. And yet, by the end of the week, there was a whole new bond of familiarity and friendship. Over a short time, we had learned and shared so much. We returned with a stronger sense of community, forged by

this common experience in New Orleans. It’s not a memory I will soon forget.

The need in New Orleans continuesMr. James Royce ’99, Social Studies teacher and co-chaperone

on the New Orleans trip with Math teacher Matthew Haywood ’01, said “The New Orleans Service Trip was an amazing experience for everyone from the Xavier community who participated. I was very proud to see how hard our students worked and how willingly they donated their time to the people of New Orleans and the response that we got from the people that we encountered made it clear that this was a community who appreciated our efforts. As it became clear to us that this is a community that will continue to need help for years to come, I hope that the great success of this trip can continue in the future and become a new Xavier tradition.”

The Campus Ministry Office is involved in another service trip this summer. This time the destination is Appalachia. n

The Athletic Director of any school is a person whose job it is to oversee not one team, but every team in their school. They take the final responsibility for everything

that happens both on and off the court and field of play. These are the people without whose encouragement, support, and leadership, the teams and programs simply would not function.

Tony Jaskot, Athletic Director at Xavier High School for the past fifteen years is a man who takes his credit in the knowledge that he has helped; in the feeling of accomplishment as he sees the students at Xavier performing at the highest level.

As a 1969 graduate of Xavier, Tony began teaching and coaching at Xavier in 1974. Tony was an assistant football coach under the legendary coach Larry McHugh from 1974 to 1984 and became a successful head coach in football himself from 1984 thru 1994. I am sure Tony is most proud of the football team as Xavier won the State Title this past fall. Tony became assistant athletic director in 1990 until be became the Athletic Director in 1997.

Micowski ’07 Stellar on Georgia Diamondearlier this year we reported on our website that Mark Micowski ’07 had been

named the Baseball Preseason Player of the year by the Colonial Athletic Association in his senior year at georgia State university.

Quoting from the article released on the georgia State website: “i’m so proud of Mark. this is truly a tremendous honor and he’s very deserving,” head coach greg Frady said. “i’m thrilled to have him anchoring our team as a senior leader.”

in May as the georgia State season was nearing its end, they said, “A native of haddam, Conn., Mark is on pace to finish his career as the georgia State leader in batting average, currently at .384. the Preseason CAA Player of the year, he ranks among the conference leaders in virtually every offensive category with a .375 average, 84 hits, 20 doubles, 48 rBis, and 51 runs scored. last season, he was a first-team all-conference selection as he set gSu single season records with 91 hits and 69 runs scored. including his two seasons at the university of vermont, Mark ranks among the nCAA’s top five active leaders in career hits. he was named georgia State’s Male Student-Athlete of the year in April.”

in 2007, Mark was named Most valuable Player for Xavier’s varsity baseball team in his senior year, was named to the new haven register’s All-Area baseball team and the hartford Courant’s All-State team. Education and Religion since 1974. His numerous awards and honors include: member of the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the Central Connecticut Association of football Officials “Friend of Football” Award. Tony has been a lifelong resident of Middletown and has been married for 32 years to his wife Donna. Tony and Donna are most proud of their three sons (all Xavier alumni) Dan ’98, Greg ’00, and Matt ’02.

Tony Jaskot has treated his position of Athletic Director not as a job but as a vocation, putting in long hours beyond those required to make certain that the Xavier Athletic program has the best chances to succeed. All the officials sitting in the audience tonight who have had the opportunity to work at Xavier, know what you get from Tony Jaskot is not only a hello and thank you, but the rare personal qualities of integrity, honesty and competence.

It has been my privilege to work with Tony for the past five years as assigning commissioner. Tony is a dedicated educator for his high school, who in my opinion has promoted fair play, sportsmanship and academic excellence. n

Incognito is defined as “in disguise, with the identity disguised or hidden.”

Academic Dean Mr. David Sizemore (Xavier class of 1986) said “Our school community was very fortunate to have with us Mr. Michael Fosberg, a resident of Chicago, to perform his one-act play called Incognito.” The occasion was Xavier’s annual Cultural Diversity Day assembly in the Kohs gymnasium. Through Incognito, Michael Fosberg promotes discussion of race, diversity and identity.

The Assembly began and ended with presentations from the Cultural Diversity Club. “As was the case with last year’s assembly,” said Mr. Sizemore “I would like to thank members of the Cultural Diversity Club and its moderator Mr. William Mr. Garrity, as well as members of the Faculty Diversity Committee for their hard work and effort in making this assembly a reality.”

Actor-author Michael Fosberg has been helping American audiences confront the issues of race and identity head-on through his one-man, autobiographical play Incognito for nearly a decade.

Raised in a Chicago suburb by his biological mother and an adoptive stepfather, at 34 Fosberg began a search for his biological father. When his father revealed in their first phone conversation that he is black, Fosberg quickly discovered the quest for his long-lost father would result not only in the discovery of a new branch

of his family tree, but of a new heritage, and idea of self.

Fosberg has performed his thought-provoking and humorous show for captivated audiences around the country at hundreds of arts venues, educational institutions, corporations and government agencies and invited them to question and discuss their thoughts on race and identity at lively post-event discussions.

Recently the story came to book form with the release of Fosberg’s autobiography Incognito: An American Odyssey of Race and

Self-Discovery. Following the assembly, he donated a copy of the book to our library. For the complete synopsis of Incognito and a more in-depth look at Mr. Fosberg’s work, especially in his visits to high schools across the country, please visit his website: www.incognitotheplay.com. n

Stabach ’93 tracks wildebeest in Africa

Jared Stabach ’93 is a Ph.D. student, Graduate Degree Program in Ecology and the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University at Fort Collins. His work for his

thesis on the wildebeest has taken him to Kenya, Africa, where he is studying their migrations. In May, Jared arranged a visit to Xavier and addressed Mrs. Linda Charpentier’s Honors Biology classes. He brought in a radio-collar that they use to track the migrations of the wildebeest and he also showed students a slideshow on his work in Africa.

Describing his presentation, Jared said “I highlight our project and one of the pieces that I’m working on right now related to my own study objectives. Our project website is http://www.nrel.colostate.edu/projects/gnu/index.php and under the “Tracking” tab project images of the movements of the animals that we currently have collared. This project has recently a lot of attention and the segment that was on 60 minutes can be found under the “Products” tab. I then stress how important having a solid foundation in science, math, and writing are to be successful in this field over the long-term.”

Jared is also working to earn a National Geographic grant to complete his work for his thesis. He is leaving in mid-June for another trip to Kenya to collect more data for his study of the wildebeest.

Jared earned his B.S. in Environmental Biology from Providence College in 1997 and M.S. in Environmental Science from URI in 2005, where he studied the Matschie’s tree kangaroo in Papua New Guinea (Mrs Charpentier assures us “ yes, there really is such an animal”). Before starting at Colorado State University, Jared worked at the Woods Hole Research Center in Falmouth, MA, focusing on biodiversity and conservation in the forests of central and eastern Africa.

He is the son of Lois Stabach, remembered by many Xavier Alums as a long-time faculty member in our science department, and brother of Jonathan ’88, Jason ’89 and Jeffrey ’95. n

The Strategic Plan that follows is designed to be used as a “living document” to guide Xavier High School through the next five years. All information is based on the available data as the document was created in 2010. It is assumed that

all recommendations will be evaluated annually by the Board of Directors and the Administration as Xavier moves forward to educate the students in its care.

This Strategic Plan addresses the recommendations of the 2009 NEASC Reaccreditation, the 2008 XBSS Mission Effectiveness Survey, and suggestions gathered from our constituents at the outset of this process. We acknowledge the participation and offer thanks to all the administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Xavier who made this document possible.

Mission StatementAs a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers and the

Diocese of Norwich, Xavier High School fosters the spiritual, academic, and physical growth of its students and challenges them to use their God-given talents in service to others so that each Xavier graduate is fully prepared to respond to the Christian call of our school motto, “Be A Man.”

Vision StatementA Catholic community fostering excellence in scholarship, leadership and service

The following is a summary of the goals enumerated in each of the six key categories of the Strategic Plan. The complete report, including objectives and committee information, as approved by the Board of Directors in January 2011 is available for review at the Xavier website www.xavierhighschool.org under the Advancement & Alumni Tab.

FinanceGoal 1 – Reduce the mortgage by a minimum of $500,000 in the next 5 years with

ultimate goal to retire the mortgage obligation

Xavier High School Five Year Strategic Plan(Summary Version)

LEGACY…something that is handed down or remains from a previous generation or time

Whether you are an alumnus, parent, grandparent, faculty/staff or friend, you have a tremendous stake in the

future of this great school. Xavier High School would not be what it is today without the commitment and support of the Xavier Community. Our future is determined by those who, year after year, provide the necessary support that helps us maintain our level of excellence academically, spiritually, physically, and technologically.

Xavier continues to excel in preparing our students for college, for life work, and above all, for life itself. In May, 200 seniors graduated and 99% went on to institutions of higher learning, most of them to four year undergraduate universities and colleges.

The positive impact of the total Xavier experience in developing the ideal graduate for college and beyond translates into….Legacy

There are many simple ways to leave a legacy. Besides a yearly donation to our Annual Fund, consider making a lasting contribution (Simple Will, Trusts, etc.) to Xavier and make your charitable work live on in the lives of Xavier students forever.

Call the Xavier Office of Advancement when you are ready. We will discuss ways to fulfill your wishes and personalize your plans.

After spending 28 years as the dean of Students at St. John’s high School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Brother Thomas M. Fahey, became a part of the Xavier high School Community in 1998 at a time in his life when many would consider retirement as a career choice. he was named as Xavier’s first director of Admissions and continues in that position today. he has been known as “the voice” of Xavier on radio, television and at numerous events. Since pronouncing his initial vows with the Xaverian Brothers in 1956, Brother Fahey has experienced many duties that allow him in his words “to have the best job in the school” spending his days recruiting new falcons.

Brian J. Hetherington graduated from Xavier high School in 1981. Brian has been generous to Xavier with his time, talent and treasure. he is a member the Xavier Board of directors and has also served on the Alumni executive Board. he and his wife Jane are responsible for the technological upgrade of one of our classrooms and are the first Xavier high School sponsors in the Shepherds Program helping to pay the four-year tuition for a student at Xavier. in 2010 Brian was inducted into the Middletown Sports hall of Fame as a football star at Xavier high School and Princeton university.

For over 20 years, ron and Cromwell Printing have helped Xavier with their

printing needs, including the programs you are reading tonight. his love of golf and Xavier helps explain why ron is regularly found in a foursome of Xavier’s 1970 graduates in the Annual Alumni golf tournament.

Our final is made posthumously to Rosemary Tomczak Strekel who became involved in Xavier high School through her sons, Matthew, class of 1999, and Alexander, class of 2000. rosemary served as treasurer of the Xavier home and School Association and chaired several fundraisers sponsored by the Association. An Alumnus Writes About a Former Teacher Connecting then and now…Let us journey back in time about 20 years.

Our vehicle is the 1990 Xavier High School Yearbook, The Don. Our cast of characters freshman J. Patrick Coolican and faculty members Richard Magner and Patrick Moynihan. The reason for the journey, a recent email correspondence between Patrick Coolican ’93, now a reporter with the Las Vegas Sun, and Director of Guidance Mr. Magner ’69; the subject: former English teacher Mr. Moynihan.

Hey Mr. Magner,Not sure if you remember me, Coolican clan, Class of ’93. A

former English department colleague of yours is doing good work in Haiti, and I wrote about it. Thought you might like to see it and pass it around to Xavier folks.

JPC

In his reply, Mr Magner said “I read your article about Patrick and I think you have captured the man. He had boundless energy and he has put that plus his plan to help people into use. It is quite a tribute to him. Thank you very much for remembering me and sending the article.”

Whether you knew Mr. Moynihan when he taught here or not, this article is one that you should enjoy. In his opening paragraphs, JPC writes…

“A recurrent theme of Mr. Moynihan’s freshman English class was destiny and how we discover our place in it. The petulant heroes, Achilles and Hamlet, avoided their fates. Oedipus believed he could overcome his own.

So perhaps it was fitting that Patrick Moynihan took years to discover his own destiny and also appropriate that once he found it, he would become so fully himself.

When he left Xavier High School in Middletown, Conn., in 1990, I was disappointed, even bitterly so. I hoped he would be my teacher at least once more. But — depending on your theology — God or the fates or something buried deep in his own psyche demanded something else of him, and the world is probably better for it.”

To: My Fellow AlumniSubject: Alumni Engagement and Involvement

“Alumni Helping Future Alumni;” we introduced this phrase in the last edition of Xavier Today. It captures our mission as Xavier alums in a short, meaningful statement. The Alumni Association Executive Committee and other alums are working to help bring life to this phrase. We continue to ask for your help, for you to be active contributors to Xavier and be involved in Xavier to support our “future alumni.” Consider a few easy ways to stay connected and make a positive difference:

CLASS CONTACTS: Class Contacts need to be our communication points to each class. Several alums have already volunteered. With over 8,000 graduates, we need key people from each class to keep us in contact with our alumni. You can do this no matter where you live.

MONETARy CONTRIBuTIONS: Xavier’s tuition is over $10,000 per student. In these difficult economic times, it is more important than ever that we demonstrate our commitment to Xavier’s Annual Fund Drive (AFD). All contributions, whether at the St. Francis Xavier level or smaller amounts are appreciated.

EVENT SPONSORShIPS: Sponsoring an alumni event or a portion of an event is great way to make a positive difference for Xavier. Events such as our Golf Classic need sponsorships to be successful. We have many other sponsorship opportunities available. All sponsorships, large and small, help us.

ALuMNI ENGAGEMENT WITh STuDENTS: We are exploring ways to increase alumni interactions with our students. For example alumni will: participate in a segment of XLI; sponsor the Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Class Nights; be involved in Junior Career Night, Xavier Open House and other school events.

As alumni, we share a unique bond — we have lived the Xavier experience. Now it is our responsibility to help our “future alumni” live that experience. I urge you to be involved by being a Class Contact, making a donation to the AFD, sponsoring an event and/or being a Xavier alumni volunteer. Please see the information we have on the Xavier web site, contact the Advancement Office or send me a note at [email protected]. The more we, as alumni, are involved and contributing to Xavier, the more we breathe life into our credo, “Alumni Helping Future Alumni.” Thank you for your support. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at Xavier.

Sincerely,

Phil Franklin, Class of 1973President, Xavier Alumni Association
