“Less is more”…

Sumi-e Art is a representation of the ink wash painting or

Chinese brush painting developed in China during the Tang

Dynasty (618-907). This style of painting was to grasp

the spirit (“chi”, Chinese for “life spirit”) in the composi-

tion of the painting with simple and harmonic lines, shading

and minimal color. In achieving the liveliness and essence

of the spirit of the painting, fewer colors and decisive lines

are used, but enough to feel the subject. Each brush

stroke is completed with meaning and has a purpose with

no corrections or dabbing.

In original Sumi-e Art context, the shading means more

than just dark-light arrangements, it is the basis for the

beautiful nuance in the tonality uniqueness of East Asian

ink wash painting and brush-and-ink calligraphy. The

shades of color can be interpreted as generations in a

family. The lightest shade represents a grandparent that has

seen many days of light, while the predominant shade is

the newest addition to a family. Many artist in the Ameri-

can Modernists era felt Sumi-e Art helped to free and

creatively shape their artistic perspective, which included
