    China Mobile Communications

Corporation (China Mobile) isone of the telecom operators

with the highest market value in the

world and listed by FORTUNE TOP500

for 6 consecutive years. As of the mid

of 2007, the number of users has

    exceeded 332 million. Through extended

    cooperation with Huawei, China Mobile

build a excellent network of high-quality,

    long-term competitive capability and

    smooth evolution to IP.

    High-quality network

    With new construction and capacity

    expansion, the network structure has

    become more and more complicated,

some equipment have aged and it is

    increasingly difcult to improve network

    Huaweis network adjustment solution

    successfully applied in Guangdong,

    Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang,

    Sichuan provinces.

For example, Chengdu is the capital of

    Sichuan Province, political and economical

center of southwest in China. Market

    features a large population dense,

a plenty of consumer quantity, high

increase of trafc. These bring very high

    requirements for network expansion and

    adjustment. So far, Chengdu network

adjustment project also is the largest

    network expansion and optimization

    project in the world.

    carried out construction and expansion

for 1476 BTSs and 9 softswitchs in three

months, and make a new record of

cutting over 91 BTSs in 3 hours. After

    the adjustments, network structure is

    simplied, enhance the capability of

    sustaining data service, improve network

performance, and support the network to

    evolve to IP smoothly.

    Long-term competitivecapability

Along with 2G network expansion, how

to combine with new technology to keep

long-term competitive capability is a key

problem that China Mobile have to face.

    Huawei innovatively introduce 3G and

IP technologies into 2G system design.

Abuntant 3G services are avaialble on the

GSM network by adopting the future-

    oriented ALL-IP platform.

So many 2G users can enjoy abundant

mobile-data services on the eve of 3G era.

Now, China Mobile network can support

many similar 3G services including Mobile

    Phone Newspaper, Wireless Music

    Download, Fetion, CBRT, WAP. Experience

of user and average revenue per user

    increased continually. The life-time of

    GSM network was prolonged greatly.

In the st half of 2007, the income that

China Mobile generated from its value-

added services reached RMB 42 billion,

which represents an increase of 35.5%

over the same period last year, and which

accounts for 25.2% of China Mobiles

    total operation income.

    Smooth evolution to IP

    In cooperation with Huawei, China

Mobile deployed the worlds largest IP-

based mobile softswitch core network in

2004, which makes China Mobile kick offthe most important step to transform to

    telecom-grade IP eld.

    In 2007, China Mobile selected

Huaweis innovative IP BSS solution to

    upgrade and expand countrywide GSM

network to ALL-IP network. Huaweis IP

BSS solution includes a new generation

    BSC (Base Station Controller) based

on ALL-IP PARC platform (Platform of

    Advanced Radio Controller) and IP-based

BTS (Base Transceiver Station) family. The BTS family supports unied 2G/3G

platform that can help operators replace

    old equipment and form future-oriented

networks so as to protect their long-

    term investments. Moreover, Huaweis

    IP-based mobile network solution solves

    three primary problems: synchronization,

QoS and security via radio access network

    which is going IP.

    Recently, China Mobile Shanxi branch

applied the Huaweis IP BSS solution, this solution fully used existing IP

    transformation resource of China

Mobile Shanxi to bear voice and data

service, not only save the cost of

    rebuilding TDM transformation, but

also became the rst IP BSS commercial

network in the world, taking the mobilenetwork transformation to IP.

    September 2007, China Mobile

selected Huawei to deploy GSM BTS

at Everest, the top of world.

    May 2007, China Mobile selected

    Huawei to deploy a 50-million-line

    mobile softswitch core network and

    137,400-TRX GSM BTSs.

    December 2006, the capability of

    Huawei's existing network reached

    124 thousand TRXs.

    June 2006, China Mobile selected

    Huawei to deploy a 50-million-line

    mobile softswitch core network and

    60,000-TRX GSM BTSs.

    April 2004, China Mobile exclusively

    selected Huawei to deploy the

    world's largest mobile softswitch

    core network with China-wide

Best performance ofUMTS & HSPA network

In May 2007, Vodafone Spain fullled a UMTS/

HSPA network throughput test when the test

area is still deployed by the former supplier.

The result causes the dissatisfaction of

Vodafone Spain for the lower performance

    in HSDPA Benchmarking test. Absolutely,

Vodafone Spain hopes to provide the bestnetwork performance as soon as possible.

Following to Huaweis distributed Node Bs,

    after swapping and optimizing, Vodafone

Spain does the HSDPA Benchmarking test

again which lasts one and a half months,

and appoints the hot point areas to do

HSDPA test. As a result, the average UMTS

& HSPA network throughput of Vodafone

Spain deployed by Huawei is 30% higher

than that of other operator; the stability is

better as well. Vodafone Spain awarded thehigh recognition to Huaweis distributed

    RAN Sharing, TCO Saving

According to the industrial regulation, the

3G operators have to complete the 70%

coverage within claimed time in Spain. At

the beginning of 2007, the key issue also

facing Vodafone Spain is how to balance

    anticipated TCO savings and expanded

network coverage against an inevitable loss

    of independence. Vodafone Spain hopes

RAN Sharing solution fully supports partners

with Logic RNC functions which enable

them to optimize the balance between

    operational independence and TCO savings

    and network expansion. Vodafone Spain

has now joined forces with other telecom

giant, Orange, and signed a deal to share

    Huawei-deployed radio access networks

in Madrid, Valenciana and Bilbao region. It

brings greater exibility in the management

    of essential infrastructure, speedier network

deployment and TCO saving which is up to

30%. Easing the nancial burden of heavy

operator licensing fees, RAN sharing is fast

becoming a major trend among leading 3G

    networks worldwide.

    Launching HSUPA in Madrid

    In September 2007, Vodafone Spain

launched HSUPA service in its entire UMTS

network in Madrid. Resorts like plaza

    Madrid, plaza Columbus, European Door,

Plato museum are always popular to visitors.

Now with high speed of 1.92Mbps HSUPA

    and 7.2Mbps HSDPA networks provided

by Huawei, travelers really enjoy the HSPA

data service to share the beautiful scenery

with their friends at once. Taking photos

at these resorts and sending them to my

friends only take me little time. It is the rst

time that I feel great to enjoy the high speed

data service though Ive been to many cities

before. , a foreign traveler said.

    including Barcelona, Madrid and

other major cities in Spain with 70%

    market share to Vodafone Spain.

    March 2007, Huawei delivered the

Phase 1 of Vodafones HSPA network

    project in Spain.

    July 2006, Vodafone Spain chose

    Huawei to build its UMTS/HSPA

network in Madrid and other major

    cities in Spain.

    November 2005, Vodafone chose

As a leader of Information and

and a major player on the world

stage, TI (Telecom Italia) began seriously

seeking the HSPA vendor best suited to

    refreshing its existing networks efciently

and rapidly. In early 2007, TI entrusted

Huawei with the updating and expanding its

local HSPA network in two major regions of

southern Italy covering around 15% of TIs

    existing 3G subscriber base.

with having the intense demand of high

speed mobile data service. As TIs existing

network equipment is very old, its current

network can only support loads of less

than 3.6 Mbps HSDPA. A major hardware

update, then, is the only way to evolve the

existing network to HSUPA. In other words,

if TI wanted to increase its HSDPA speeds,

enhance service and achieve HSUPA in the

near future, it either had to upgrade its old

hardware or invest in new equipment. As

you probably already know, IP is a growing

    sites are on air.

    February 2007, Telecom Italia

    selected Huawei to provide HSPA

solutions as well as support the

future upgrades of its 3G mobilenetwork in Italy.

    December 2006, TI nished the

    Lab-test for Huaweis equipments

    and technologies through which TI

    further insights in Huawei's technical

    lead in UTRAN eld.

    Milestonestrend in mobile network development.

    Unfortunately, as TIs existing network

equipment was simply not capable of

supporting IP RAN, the company needed

to add extra pre-positive equipment to its

    existing network inventory.

In Sicily, for example, TI currently uses over

750 Node Bs. If the company wants to

upgrade its HSDPA speed from 3.6 Mbps

to 7.2 Mbps, it will have to invest in

    replacement boards costing 2,500 Euros

each. Assuming the TI engineer in charge

can change a maximum 3 boards daily

    because of debugging problems, the

project will take fully 250 days to complete!

As the daily cost of this engineer is 200

Euros, the total hardware and labor costs

for the project will be in excess of 2 million

Euros! For this reason, operators thinking of

upgrading to HSUPA and IP-RAN must thinklong and hard about the potentially heavy

    costs involved.

Huaweis new generation Node B solution

    incorporates hardware that enables

a maximum speed rate of 14.4 Mbps

    HSDPA. Migrating to HSUPA, meanwhile,

requires only a simple software upgrade,

which help operators avoid the potentially

    heavy costs above-mentioned. Ultimately,

    Huaweis clearly superior IP-RAN capability

and IP transmission solution greatly reducesoperators transmission expenses. As TI

found, Huaweis new generation Node Bs

also deliver sizeable savings when used to

    enhance existing network technology.

Beneting from smallmachine, Distributed Node B

    Sicily enjoys a typically Mediterranean

climate, with hot, dry summer days when

    the outdoor temperature often exceeds

40oC and sometimes soars to 50oC. TIs

existing elderly Node Bs require a great deal

of electricity to run. The typical traditional

macro Node Bs power consumption is

1,000W under normal work situations and

    heat dissipation is hugely problematic.

The fact that TIs machine room needs

    special, purpose-designed air conditioning

further adds to TIs running costs.

The key advantage of Huaweis DistributedNode B is that they divide traditional macro

Node B into two parts: the BBU (Base

Band Unit) and the RRU (Remote Radio

Unit). Huaweis BBU is a mini-base band

and its power consumption is just 60W.

Meanwhile, Huaweis RRU can be easily

mounted on walls or poles, and cooled

    naturally outdoors.

In Palermo, the capital of Sicily, Distributed

    Node B helps TI realize co-site, co-cabinet,

and co-antenna with TIs existing 2Gequipments. In fact, benets from its high

    efciency power amplier, Distributed

Node B obtains the same cover effect as a

GSM network under a lower power withoutincreasing the number of site so that

simultaneously it reduces the inuence to

    the environment and the inhabitant.

    Thanks to Huaweis successful smooth

    upgrade, the download data service

speed of TI's HSDPA network has grown

fourfold from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps. More

importantly, TIs network KPI all indicate

that network quality has been greatly

enhanced. With Huaweis support, TI really

has begun to realize its 3G goal on the y.

    Walk out from Hot Areas

When the bandwidth and the speed

are assured, the next question that

users care about is whether they can

    use the mobile broadband anywhere.

As we know, Wi-Fi is restricted within

hot spot and indoor signal of the

traditional 3G network is usually tooweak to support data application.

From the very rst beginning, EMOBILE

is taking up with building the integrated

    mobile broadband. For indoor area,

    EMOBILE also adopted the Huaweis

    indoor Distributed Node B System

(iDBS) to realize the fully coverage

in buildings, subway, and tunnels. In

    Tokyos YAKAMA business buildings,

there are many repeaters installed inside

by other operators with low capacity,

which is very hard for expansion and

    maintenance. But now, EMOBILE

deployed one iDBS system, which can

support 12 cells and can connect as

many as 768 antennas, brings high

    capacity and wide coverage. EMOBILE

can also offer VIP data transfers via

simple data conguration with no need

    for costly network rebuilding.

    IP technology enabledsizeable transmissionsavings

In addition to supplying a radio accessnetwork, EMOBILE needed to improve

its transmission efciency because of its

    new HSDPA services extra bandwidth

    and dissymmetrical trafc volume

    needs. Ultimately, only IP transmission

is capable of supplying such a strong

    data ability.

When it comes to advanced IP

technology, Huawei has built up an

enviable reputation for successfullycombining both data and mobile

    communication. Thanks to Huawei`s

    IP-RAN solution, EMOBILE was able

to combine RNC together with its

core network equipment in Tokyo. As

a result, EMOBILE was able to take

    advantage of easier maintenance

and also deploy Node Bs all over the

    country via IP transmission.

The fact that EMOBILE can utilize

    its exiting IP transmission resources

eliminates the companys need to build

    an additional transmission system or

rent E1 for its 3G equipment.

    August 2007, EMOBILE acquired

    100,000 subscriber a month ahead

    Rapid deployment is necessary

In India, mobile users are growing

rapidly, with an increase of 166%.

Under the high competitive pressure,Reliance must deploy the network

rapidly and put it into commercial

launch as soon as possible to ensure

    its dominant position. Huawei spent

only 10 days onsite to achieve the rst

connection and delivered at a highest

rate of 50 base stations per day. By

early June of 2007, all 7 core network

sites were online for operation. The

    rapid deployment was accomplished

due to speeding up the test schedule, engineering schedule, version control

    and feature analysis schedule.

multimedia, so it can make Reliances

integrated service dream to come true.

    Brand vision becomes a reality

    Huaweis solution relieved the pressure

that Reliance was facing from the

sudden increase in subscribers, and has

    enhanced Reliances brand by reducing

    churn rates. In addition, Reliances

    CAPEX and OPEX were reduced.

Huaweis series of base stations have

    expanded Reliances network coverage

from densely-populated urban areasto sparsely-populated mountainous

areas in India, while reducing network

    risks brought about by challenging

    environments. This has enabled Reliance

to realize high network availability and

gain increasing loyalty from their users.

    Furthermore, fast network deployment

    has allowed Reliance to successfully

attract more subscribers and gain a

    larger market share.

    Also, Huaweis mature solution was

    able to protect Reliances current

    investments and enhanced its

    capabilities in future-oriented service

    expansion. Reliance has constructed

an ALL-IP network capable of smooth

evolution into the future UMB, which

will provide its subscribers with better

    service and more reliable network

performance at no additional cost, thus

Ever since 2001, Leap has been confronted with the

serious bottleneck of fast network expansion-

malfunction in existsing equipment and huge

maintenance. In 2003, Leap selected Huawei

for the strict network tests. Having successivelypassed the rigid entry tests from NEBS, UL, FCC

and operators, Huawei was qualied as the "

    Leap Qualied Vendor".

Leap granted Huawei with 3 districts for network

During the rst phase of the project,

Huaweis IP-based BTS also endured the

all-round test. Reno in Nevada is near

to desert, and the outdoor temperature

    in summer always exceeds 40oC.

    Huaweis outdoor BTS still worked

while the BTS from the original vendors

was failure to work because of the hightemperature.

    Huaweis IP-based CDMA BTS features

large capacity, high reliability, low power

and upgrade to UMB smoothly. Thanks

to the distributed design of base band

unit and remote radio unit as well as

    the hotswitching technology, the power

consumption of BTS can be saved 60%.

The rst adoption of DPD and Doherty

technologies improves to 33% of thepower amplication. The all-in-one

design for transmission and power supply

reduce the difculty in choosing sites.

    The fast and economic deployment

help Leap to quicken the prot cycle.

    The coverage demand for

the most important telecommarket in U.S.A

The Lake Area is the most important

area in where Leap's recently acquired

AWS spectrum. The Lake Areas arethe economy and industrial center

in U.S.A which only inferior to New

    York. Featuring the matured urban

    development, the concentrated and

    crowded population, the swarm

    transportation, the high building

average height, it is the most difcult

area to be covered, and also the

    telecom fortress which the operators

    must to ght.

In such a signicant stage, Leap choseHuawei's 3G CDMA solution to cover

the Lake Area once again. In the

second phase, Huawei will deploy over

1300 BTS, and provides the service for

    16 million American people.

In February, 2007, the network quality

was promoted greatly after the rst

    phase of cutover project completed.

The problem area turns to the

    most Outstanding Area of Network

Performance. The Leap staff whois responsible for this area was also

    elected as the network maintenance

star of Leap. Call Drop Rate (CDR)

and Connection Failure Rate (IA) were

reduced from the original 1% to 0.5%.

It was reported by The "Lehman

    Brothers Analysis report" that Leap

boosts a reliable network quality and is

the one of best American operators in

    terms of Churn Rate.

    June 2007, Leap chose Huawei's

    CDMA2000 solutions to support Leap's

    recently acquired AWS spectrum.

March 2007, the rst phase of

    Western-Northern projct completed

    succefully and the netweok

    performance was improved greatly.

    June 2006, Leap awarded Huawei

    3G commericial network contract to

replace the old CDMA network in

    western and northern area.

    September 2004, Leap awarded

Hauwei the Qualied Vendor title and

    the strategic cooperation between

    Leap and Huawei was started.

    Milestones

Based on the understanding ofAmerican telecom market and rich

experience in the rst phase of Leap

project, Huawei will deliver the network

for the Lake Area the second half year

of 2008. The successful delivery of Lake

    Area's network means that Huawei's

capability has been accepted by the

whole U.S.A and Lake Area will become

    management process, and effective

    project management platform

provided TATA the rapid delivery of

high quality network. In phase 1 of

this project, it only took ve monthsthat Huawei helped TATA to deployed

    a comprehensive 3G-oriented

CDMA network in Delhi. It not only

    improved the network quality and

    increased the system capacity, but

    also simplied the network structure

and saved large numbers of operating

    costs. Through that, TATAs market

    competitive edge was strengthened.

    Moreover, TATAs 2 million original

    CDMA subscribers was migrated to

    the Huawei-deployed CDMA network

    successfully and smoothly.

    High-quality network andOPEX-saving

    Because of unusually erce competition

in Indias telecoms market, the only

way to keep continuously success for

operator is upgrading its quality of

    service and network. Huaweis IP-based

    CDMA softswitch core network and

    radio access network solutions helped

    TATA achieved that.

The rst is the substantial increase

    in network capacity. TATAs CDMA

subscribers increased at the rate of

1 million per month. The ceaseless

    increased subscirbers result in

    continuous requirements for improving

    network capabilty and services.

Network expansion of the existing will

spend a high cost. Huaweis advanced

    CDMA Softswitch network with high

integrated and strong ability in service

offering can smooth evolve to MMD

    with lower cost.

In Delhi, it takes only 4 Huaweis new

generation PARC BSCs to replace the

existing 44 BSCs of other vendors. The

cabinets have been saved more than 92%!

The second point is that 3G services

should be available at any time. TATA

has launched a new brand campaign

this year. Through building a high

quality network with clear voice, high security, and future-oriented

    technology, TATA enlarge further its

    brand value.

    Moreover, the network coverage is

more complicated in major large cities

with crowded users, which need large-

capacity networks. By contrast, in some

medium and small cities, users have

    rather scattered, the wide coverage

with lower cost should be concerned.

    Huaweis end-to-end future-oriented

    CDMA solution realized TATAs goal.

    Huaweis industry-leading BTS adopts

    multiplicate advanced technologies

    such as multi-carrier and A-Doherty,

    which make the Power Amplier

Efciency reaching up to 33%, the

    power consumption cost being reduced

by 40%. Huaweis IP over STM-1 and IP

over E1 solutions saved more than 50%

of the existing network transmissionresources with the QoS guarantee.

    telecommunication industry.

    Through continuous innovations, it

helps redene the industry to ensure

    that telecommunication will bring the

maximum benets to the people of

    Indonesia.

Bakrie set out to quickly winover end-users

When it set up operations back in

1993, Bakrie was one of the pioneers

    in Indonesia's burgeoning telecoms

industry. At its outset, the company

had two major aims. Firstly, it planned

    to attract subscribers by introducing

    genuinely ground-breaking innovations.

    Secondly and perhaps most importantly

of all, it wanted to redene the local

telecoms industry by ensuring thepeople of Indonesia derived maximum

    benets from the telecoms revolution.

In 2003 year, Bakrie chose Huawei as

    its network construction partner for

the Bandung launch of its new Esia-

    branded service.

    Telecoms history shows that attracting

    potential subscribers and seizing market

    opportunities demands not only fast

network deployment but also top ight

network performance. In order to achievethese goals, Bakrie paid a great deal

of attention to the EV-DO data service

which was the key to enhancing ARPU.

As a result of the Bandung regions

    high population density, Bakrie needed

    to offer in-depth communication

network coverage if it was to succeed

in its objectives. Before it could acquire

the private land it needed to construct

its BTS site, the company rst had

to obtain permission from both thegovernment and the landholder. This

" In Indonesia, Bakries CDMA brand obtains a good attention and the quantity

of our customers increases rapidly. We think Huaweis innovated industry-

leading BTS and great capability networking solutions can content our

requirement of network development, and help us realize maximum benet in

TCO saving and network operation. "

was not an easy process. The fact

    that transmission resources are very

    lacking in Indonesia was another

headache for Bakrie. In order to resolve

    these issues, the company seriously

    considered opting for a microwave

    transmission-based service. Ultimately,

the high cost of such a step meant that

Bakrie urgently needed a solution that

    would slash its potentially escalating

    deployment and operating costs. .

The multiplex solutionpaved the way to success

    After careful comparison of

several options, Bakrie uniedits development strategy with its

    projected demand and chose Huawei

as its partner in the continuous

    provision of solutions and services.

To satisfy the heavy trafc demand

    among Bandungs dense population,

    Huawei proposed an ultra-large

    capacity networking solution. As such

    large-capacity networking requires

    signicantly fewer BTSs, Bakrie was

able to make considerable savingson its site acquisition costs. Huaweis

    application of industry-leading DPD and

    Doherty technologies also increased

    Bakries power amplication efciency

to 33%. As a result, Bakrie was able to

    guarantee in-depth communications

    network coverage for subscribers

    across Bandung.

Supporting fully 240 voice channels per

E1, the BTS Abis interface even enabled

the company to make substantialresources savings on new transmission

    bandwidth needs by optimizing usage

    of existing resources.

    Bakries adoption of Huaweis ALL-IP

solution has enabled it to slash

transmission costs by more than 60%.

In other words, when measured against

    traditional networking technologies,

    Huaweis ALL-IP networking solution is

not only more convenient and exible,

it also fully utilizes the advantage ofCDMA2000 1xEV-DO.

Huawei offers Bakrie the advantages of

    a fully-edged 1X/DO mix networking

    solution. Huaweis 1X/DO technologies

    fully protects operators existing

    investment and reduces potential EV-DO

    deployment cost by sharing resources

such as the feeder, power supply and

    transmission and service equipment.

In 2006, Bakrie joined forces with

    Qualcomm to demonstrate the

superiority of EV-DO services based on

    existing networks at Bandungs IDB

    University, one of Indonesias best-

    known tertiary education institutes. The

event was a huge success, attracting

    many high-end users to subscribe.

    Bandungs culture of educational

    enterprise is already quite mature.

The success of the EV-DO demonstration

at IDB University further deepened the

strong trust that had been built up

    between Bakrie and Huawei.

    How Bakrie enhance its

    brand loyalty

As a result of adopting Huaweisolutions, Bakrie has been able to cut

    its construction and operating costs

by over 60%. Huawei completed the

vital rst phase of the recent Bandung

project in the astonishingly short time

frame of just three months, enabling

Bakrie to attract a large number of

users in the process. As a result, Bakrie

    May 2007, Bakrie chose Huawei

to construct CDMA networks in 20

    cities in Indonesia

    expanded by Huawei in Bandung

    May 2006, Bakrie joined forces

    with Qualcomm to demonstrate the

    superiority of EV-DO services based

    on existing networks at Bandung

    February 2004, Bakrie launched the

    CDMA network of Bandung

    December 2003, Bakrie chose

Huawei to deploy the network inBandung, Indonesia

    Milestones

    has become the fastest-growing

    telecoms operator in Indonesia, with

growth rates approaching 100% in the

    rst half of 2006 alone.

The excellence of Bakries network KPI

means the company continues to y

high in the Indonesian telecoms market.

    According to a respected Indonesian

    survey organization, Bakries user churn

rate of just 2% is just a quarter that of

the national average. At the same time,

a survey into brand and advertising

    effectiveness shows that Bakries 66%

CDMA user recommendation rate is the

    highest in Indonesia.
