Gates resident Bruce Rychwalski receives Lifespan awardby Kristina Gabalski

Bruce Rychwalski of Gates was recognized during Lifespan’s 20th Cel-ebration of Aging on March 24 with the Eli Rudin Second Half Hero Award.

“The faces of aging who live and work among us.” She noted all exemplify the “new face of aging” - people who are growing older but who are taking advantage of options and choices.

“You continue to live as you have always lived,” Cook told recipients.

Rychwalski says he hopes to be an inspiration to those like himself who have heart problems and heart dis-ease, or who have undergone surgery to implant medical devices such as pacemakers, cardioverter defibrilla-tors, insulin pumps and coronary or thoracic stents.

He is currently in the process of be-coming a volunteer at Unity Hospital and hopes to function as a mentor for patients who are either getting a medi-cal device, or who have already had one implanted.

“I can answer their questions,” he says, “and let them know, I got this and I’m leading a normal life.”

He notes mentoring can help to put a patient’s “mind at ease.”

Rychwalski continues to run, al-though he has to watch his pace and not become winded. He still runs a

The March 24 luncheon was the larg-est in the history of the Lifespan event with 1,600 people in attendance. Lifes-pan provides information, guidance and multiple services to help older adults take on both the challenges and opportunities of a longer life.

State Senator Joe Robach, Assem-blyman Joe Morelle, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn and Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo were among the local dignitaries who at-tended. The event was hosted by Don Alhart of 13 WHAM News.

Guest speaker Henry Winkler de-scribed the ups and downs of his career in acting. He said he was, “inspired by the (Second Half Hero) honorees,” and encouraged those attending to, “discover the greatness in you, and give it to the world as a gift.”

That’s something Bruce Rychwalski has done and continues to do very well.

The 66-year old Rychwalski expects to run his 200th race this year since having Implantable Cardioverter Defi-brillator (ICD) implantation surgery in 2011. The device helps him to manage a genetic heart muscle disease.

In addition to running, Rychwalski keeps active with various volunteer activities and is working to reach out to others facing similar medical issues through the formation of “The Roch-ester Running Heroes,” a group he hopes will consist of others who have had medical devices implanted into their bodies and continue to run and be active.

Suss-out John Dunn’s crossword puzzle in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal

Though crossword puzzle constructor John Dunn says he has created fewer puzzles in recent months due to time con-straints, he’s excited that one of his newest will be published in the Wednesday, April 6, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal.

This will be the first of his puzzles printed in the WSJ and is theme-based, as are all crosswords in the publication. “You’ll just have to solve it to suss-out the theme!” he says.

Dunn has only submitted a handful of

puzzles to the Wall Street Journal but has had many of his word challenges printed in other prominent publications including eight published in the New York Times and two in the Los Angeles Times.

Dunn, owner of Dunn’s Home Fur-nishings in Brockport and a Spencerport resident, has created several puzzles for Westside News Inc. newspapers Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, the most recent one printed in March of this year.

GrandeVille Senior Living Community held its annual Easter Egg Hunt for children through 10 years of age on Saturday, March 26. They raffled off two Easter Baskets supporting Breast Cancer Research. Niko Scholand enjoyed meeting the Easter Bunny who made a special visit to GrandeVille for the egg hunt. Provided photo and information.

Easter egg huntersuncover plenty of prizes

On Saturday, March 19, the Town of Riga held its annu-al Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The weather was absolutely wonderful with the hunt taking place out-doors for the first time in four years.

The boys and girls hunted through the straw pile for over 1,000 eggs in pursuit of the Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze eggs. After the hunt, the children had the op-portunity to enjoy arts and crafts, facepainting, airbrush-ing tattoos and a jellybean-guessing contest.

Thanks go out to the following organizations and indi-viduals that made this event possible: Kohlman Farms, the Churchville “LEO” Club, the Riga Highway Depart-ment, Tina Bruton, Adrianna Wellin, Marty Molinari, Mary Pat Dewey, Arlene’s Costumes and Airbrushing, “Hoppity” The Easter Bunny and the hunters and their parents.

Districts are adapting well to Urban-Suburbanby Kristina Gabalski

When the Spencerport School Board of Education voted in February of 2015 in favor of the district joining the Ur-ban-Suburban program, some district residents applauded, while others threatened legal action. More than one year later, Spencerport School Superintendent Michael Crumb says despite initial concerns of many residents, the program is going well.

“It has been a wonderful experience for both Urban-Sub-urban students and our resident students,” Crumb observes. “Truly, the students are Spencerport Rangers now, with no differentiation.

The district welcomed it’s first Urban-Suburban students at the beginning of the 2015/2016 school year. The program brings both minority students and those living in poverty from the Rochester City School District to suburban districts. Currently, Spencerport has 17 Urban-Suburban students - six first graders; five second graders; and six sixth grad-ers.

“I met with the parents of the Urban-Suburban students in December and all were extremely appreciative of the

education their child was receiving and the nurturing envi-ronment found in our schools,” Superintendent Crumb says. “All the feedback from our school staff has been positive, including how wonderful the students are and how their parents are supportive and participating in the education of their child.”

The Spencerport district plans to continue its participation in Urban-Suburban, Crumb says. “Our teams of principals, teachers and counselors will be screening and interviewing this spring in order to select six first graders and six sixth graders to start in the fall of 2016.” District officials say that is exactly how the continuation of the program was communicated to the community last year.

Jeff Crane is the chairman of the Urban-Suburban Gov-ernance Committee. He says he is not surprised that the program is working in Spencerport.

“It worked out as we predicted,” he says. “Change is something that is very difficult, but once the school year starts and kids get into the classrooms, things work out beautifully.”

Crane says the diversity fostered by Urban-Suburban is the best way to prepare students for the future, where they will encounter diversity in the ever-growing global workplace.

He also notes that the debate over Spencerport joining the program helped to move Urban-Suburban forward. The pro-gram had previously only been open to minority students.

“The Governance Board focused more on poverty than race for entrance into the program,” Crane says of changes made in the last year. “It led to the review and renewal of our mission statement.”

In the future, Crane says more opportunities will be cre-ated for suburban students to take part in opportunities available in the Rochester City School District. “It’s a two-way street,” he says.

The Kendall Central School District is another of several local districts which joined Urban-Suburban in the 2015-2016 school year.

Superintendent Julie Christensen says Kendall has two students - a seventh grader and a third grader who have acclimated well. “The (Kendall) kids have embraced them and their parents are very involved,” she says.

Christensen says despite the distance to Kendall, in Or-leans County, the seventh grader is active in extracurricular activities including music and volleyball.

She says superintendents at other districts, which recently joined have said they all feel the first school year has gone well. She is especially impressed with the commitment of Urban-Suburban parents. “They feel they have a responsi-bility to attend the meetings,” she says.

Jeff Crane agrees. It’s a win-win, he says of the Urban-Suburban program. “Both sides find that to be true after working out the struggles. I’m so glad Julie (Christensen) at Kendall and Mike (Crumb) at Spencerport are reporting success. So are the other districts that recently joined.”
