Ranger Robotics part of winning alliance at World championships

Congratulations to the Spencerport Ranger Robotics, Team 3015, which competed as a member of the winning alliance of the Tesla division in the First Robotics world championships in St. Louis April 29 and 30.

Spencerport Ranger Robotics worked within an alliance made up of teams from Canada and Israel and the Charles Finney School in Penfield, Team 1405.

This is the fourth time in the last five years (and seven years of the team’s existence) that they have qualified and competed at the world championships. Since 2009, students have accumulated $702,000 in college scholarships.

More backgroundOnly 600 teams from across the world qualify for this event. Spencerport’s team is made up of 72 students and three teacher mentors, as well as 20 mentors from the community and industry.

How it worksStudents have six and a half weeks to design, build and test their robots. Teams start out in one of eight sub-divisions and play in qualification matches for the first two days. Then during the alliance selec-tions, Spencerport’s team was chosen to be a part of the number one alliance with a team from Canada, a team from Israel Scaling the castle at the First Robotics world championship. and another Rochester team - the Charles Finney School. The alliance then played in elimination rounds where they won their division.

Last year, Spencerport also made it to the finals in their division but lost, so this year they were very excited to win the Tesla division; the farthest their team has ever made it in their history. The winners of all eight sub-divisions play each other on a field called Einstein with 43,000 people watching and cheering in the Edward Jones stadium. These are the top 32 teams in the world.

Spencerport continued to win, making it to the world finals. Each elimination round goes by the best of three matches and the

finals proved to be the closest and most exciting in FRC’s 25 year history. Each alliance won a match and Spencerport’s team tied the third match 225-225. The alliance lost in a final tiebreaker because of penalty points accumulated earlier in the competition. Despite the loss, Spencerport is proud to be one of the top eight teams.

A film crew captured every moment and is working on a documentary. Major sponsors of the team include: Xerox, Harris, Baxter, United Technologies, Advantage Federal Credit Union and Spencerport Federal Credit Union.

Winners announced for annual Erie Canal Poster ContestThe annual Erie Canal Poster Contest was held in conjunc-

tion with Brockport’s Low Bridge High Water Festival. Under the supervision of the Hill School art teacher Rachel Jarmuzz and the fourth grade classroom teachers, students created posters depicting scenes of the Erie Canal as it was used in the past or as it is used today. Local artists Helen Smagorinsky, Alicia Fink and Lori Skoog judged the contest entries.

LaxFest raised funds for Golisano Children’s HospitalThe Spencerport Rangers Girls and Boys lacrosse pro-

grams held the 7th Annual Spencerport LaxFest on Sat-urday, May 7. The program worked with the “More Than a Game Foundation,” where each team raised pledges in the name of Alex Turnquist. Alex was a Spencerport student-athlete that lost his battle with cancer in February 2015.

The “LaxFest” event included all Spencerport Youth Lacrosse teams playing a game on the campus as well as being introduced at halftime during the Varsity game. This year the lacrosse program donated $4,140 to the Golisano Children’s Hospital through the event.

Tim Britton, Spencerport Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Coach said, “The Spencerport LaxFest is a day that brings together all Spencerport lacrosse teams, boys and girls, kindergarten through 12th grade. Our entire lacrosse community sprawls the district campus to celebrate our love for the game, raise money and bring awareness to the fight against cancer. It has been a huge success for everyone involved in planning and coordinating a great day of fundraising and lacrosse. We’re very proud to sup-port the Golisano Children’s Hospital and the More Than a Game Foundation.”

Patricia Condon, Spencerport Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse coach mentioned, “The best thing about LaxFest is the posi-

tive playing environment that is created by the teams and the community. The event allows players youth through varsity to enjoy the game of lacrosse played at all levels and support the continued growth of the sport. Playing the day for Alex made it even more special.”

Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration enters Phase Twoby Kristina Gabalski

EPA officials recently called Braddock Bay, “the crown jewel of New York’s coastal wetlands,” and the College at Brockport and Hilton Central School will be a part of studying how well the ongoing Ecosystem Restoration project is working.

During a news conference in late April, Town of Greece, local and state officials, NYS Department of Environmental Con-servation and U.S. Army Corps of Engi-neers Buffalo District officials celebrated the completion of the first phase of the project and detailed work, which will be completed in phase two.

“It’s a project we’ve been waiting for since the 1970’s,” Greece Town Supervisor William Reilich said. The project, “restores nature to what it was and keeps boats on the channel. It’s a win-win project.”

The $8 million restoration returns Brad-dock Bay into a premier wildlife, conser-vation, recreation destination, said Chris Zeltmann, regional director for Senator Charles Schumer. Schumer worked to get EPA funding for the project.

Zeltmann explained work on phase one was completed over the winter and included clearing channels and digging potholes for wildlife. Invasive cattail monoculture was removed to encourage biodiversity, includ-ing the growth of native sedge grass.

The restoration facilitates an emergent marsh with habitat for fish, waterfowl and migratory birds. The marsh had become eroded over the years by wave action from the lake and was choked with cattail growth.

Phase two will include the construction of a barrier beach at the mouth of Braddock Bay to reduce erosion, lower wave action, and create habitat for shore birds.

“It’s good for the environment and good for people who want to enjoy the water,” State Senator Joseph Robach said.

Phase two additionally includes the cre-ation of an approximately 200 feet wide, 8 feet deep navigational channel, which will facilitate boaters entering Lake Ontario.

NYS DEC Region 8 Director Paul D’Amato said his agency is confident the project will work to significantly restore habitat. “I grew up on the west side of Rochester and this has a lot of meaning to me,” he said.

The College at Brockport will be involved in a two-year environmental monitoring effort, project manager Sheila Hint of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told the Sub-urban News/Hamlin-Clarkson Herald. “The college will help to track wildlife and how it is affected by the environmental improvements.”

Additionally, work is underway on an agreement with the Hilton Central School District, which involves learning opportu-nities for students in high school science classes. “Students can come and volunteer to do plantings and tour the channels in the summer as part of their earth science classes,” Hint said.

Greece Supervisor Reilich said during the news conference that the town is seek-ing a new operator for the Braddock Bay Marina. He explained that the town will accommodate boaters at the marina this season, and that it will remain open during construction.

“Let folks do the work (this year) and next year it will be behind us and (lake ac-cess) will be better than we have seen in 40 years,” Supervisor Reilich said. “It is what it has been and will get better.”

Phase two is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Local artist’s work on display at Parma Public LibraryElise Kull has always filled her life with the arts. She

has studied music and dance and has been involved in the-ater productions. With her interest and background, Elise now turns to painting as her own means of art expression. She brought her artwork to the Parma Public Library Gal-lery for her own show during the month of May.

The free spirit of Elise’s work might best be called ex-perimental. In her words, “Everything is an experiment. Nothing is ever totally set in stone. I think I will go to the grave like that - experimenting.”

Elise fills her pieces with color and light and she makes little use of black. Her subject matter is mainly abstract but when looking closely, one might find a child on the sand, reminiscent of Mary Cassatt’s Two Children at the Seashore. Her medium is mainly acrylic but her experi-menting has brought her to encompass watercolors and most recently the color depth of enamels.

Spencerport community supports 2016-17 budgetSpencerport School District voters approved the

$77,130,717 million budget proposal for 2016-17 with authorization to expend $95,000 of reserves to purchase classroom equipment.

Approximately 1,494 voters cast their ballots on May 17, with the following results: •Proposition 1: the budget and use of reserve funds for classroom equipment: 1,140 in favor (77.2 percent) and 337 opposed (22.8 percent).•The three candidates elected to the Board of Education were: Greg Kincaid (1,150); Gary Bracken (835); and Kath-erine Czarnecki (808). The remaining candidates received: Janet Tyler (615) and William Sweeney (529) votes.

GVAS begins free weekly blood pressure clinicThe Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) will

begin a free weekly blood pressure clinic on Tuesday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Spencerport Station, 116 Lyell Avenue. The clinic will be offered every Tuesday during the same hours.

“Your blood pressure is one of the most important indica-tors of your personal health,” said Chief Melissa Geffert. “Everyone should know what his or her ‘numbers’ are and what they mean. The Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service is pleased to begin this regular weekly service for the con-venience of those we serve in Spencerport.”

GVAS has been offering free weekly blood pressure clin-ics at its headquarters at 1001 Elmgrove Road and at the Gates Town Hall since 1993. Today, the clinics are staffed by current and past members including Elsie Glenden-ning, coordinator; and Cheddy Baker, Susan Galen, Mary Hartman, Nancy Mauro, David Quartley, Noel Schey, Judy Stone and Edward Verdouw.

“Although the blood pressure clinic is a regularly sched-uled event every Tuesday, Spencerport residents should always feel free to stop by our station on Lyell Avenue any time to have their blood pressure taken,” said Chief Geffert.

GVAS and the Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance Service consolidated operations in 2014 to benefit the residents of both communities through improved service and response times.

Brockport overcame 3-0 and 6-5 deficits with three runs in their last two times at bat to defeat Churchville-Chili 10-7 in girls’ softball.

The Saints opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Danielle King reached on a two-base error and Melissa Prewasnicak singled and stole second. Pitcher Deanna Tinch drove both in with a single. Another single by Lizzy Beach and a wild pitch put runners at second and third before Jenna Prewasnicak drove in the third run with a single.

Brockport rebounded with five runs in their half of the first. Erynn Hogan plated Emily Parker with an RBI double and was sent home on a single by Olyvia Zinkiewich, Mara Santos one-hopped the wall on her RBI double and later scored on an error. Mandi Lucas scored on a wild pitch to complete the inning.

Churchville-Chili recaptured the lead in the third as both Tinch and Beach reached on errors. Tinch scored on an RBI single by Jess Ficarella and, after a single by Andrea Giuliano loaded the bases, Jenna Prewasnicak walked to drive in a run. After a pair of force outs, King drove in another run with an infield single.

The Saints made it 7-5 in the fourth as Tinch led off with a single and went to third on a double by Beach. Ficarella drove in Tinch on a groundout.

Brockport tied the game with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth. Parker reached on a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hogan sent her home with a single and later scored as Zinkiewich singled and the ball was thrown away as she went to third.

The Blue Devils added a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Bri Judd and Jasibel Claudio both singled with Judd later scoring on an error.

In the sixth Santos stroked a one-out single and advanced to second on a ground-out. Katie Overmeyer drove in Santos with a single and went to second on the throw. Judd then drove in the last run with a triple.

“We were outscoring 54-4 the first week of the season and most would hang their heads, but this group never quit,” Brock-port head coach Mary Karen What said.Brockport finished the season with a 5-14 record and seeded seventh with a first round game against Franklin.

Churchville-Chili was 3-17 and the tenth seed in Class AA. Their season ended with a loss to seventh-seed Hilton in the first round.

Combined no-hitter for Hiltonby Warren Kozireski

Six pitchers combined for a no-hitter as fifth seed Hilton defeated 12th-seed Edison 25-0 in the first round of the Class AA Sec-tion V playoffs.

Michael Murphy, Brent Turpyn, Justin Resseguie, Morgan Kunigan, Brian Wolf and Max Hendry limited the Inventors to just two base-runners who reached on er-rors. They struck out 13 batters in all.

Jack Annable, Chase Metzger and Resseguie each had three RBI’s while

The Major League Baseball® Jr. Home Run Derby™ is a free way for talented youngsters to showcase their hitting abili-ties, with the opportunity of competing at a National Finals during MLB® All-Star Week™.

Boys and girls are divided into two age divisions: 12U and 14U, and will have the chance to advance through three levels of

competition. The Local Champions from both age divisions will advance to the Re-gional Level and Regional Champions will advance to the National Finals, which will take place during the 2016 MLB® All-Star Week™ in San Diego, California.

Hauck, AlbertHilton: Passed away peace-fully on March 20, 2016. He was predeceased by Mary Ann, his wife of 67 years; his brother, Ronald G. Hauck; grandsons, Christopher Al-bert Hauck and Ryan Mi-chael Hauck. He is survived by his children, Mary (Ross) Sceusa, Albert E. (Kacey) Hauck, Laurie (George) Schwalb, Brian Hauck, Tri-sha (Bill) Scull & Ashley (Dave) Yantz; 12 grandchil-dren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, Bob (Cathy) Beer and sister, Shari (Jim) Panaro. Al retired from Kodak’s Employee Group Travel after working for the company for 36 years. He was an avid golfer and bowler who was in many leagues. Al had a “hole in one” and one perfect bowling game. Al and Mary Ann never trav-eled anywhere without their golf clubs either in their vehicle or a plane.

Twenty-one Stories for Scouts descends on Rochester for 7th year

Seneca Waterways Council Boy Scouts of America held their 7th annual 21 Stories For Scouts rappelling event on Friday, May 13 in downtown Rochester. The event took place at the First Federal Plaza Building with doz-ens of people rappelling 309 feet down the side of one of Rochester’s most iconic buildings.

The event raised over $81,000 to benefit disadvantaged at-risk youth in the Scouting program, especially in urban environments, by providing camperships and financial as-sistance with uniforms, books and more to support their Scouting experience. The local scouting program provides opportunities for personal growth, character development, and leadership training for nearly 11,000 youth in over 400 scouting programs across a five-county area includ-

ing 64 urban scouting programs serving 1,231 youth in the City of Rochester.

“The adrenaline rush of this event for an individual rap-pelling is very similar to that which our scouts experience at camp when they challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zone,” said Stephen Hoitt, Seneca Waterways Council CEO. “When an 11-year-old scout is standing at the top of a 30 foot climbing wall at camp, there is some nervousness and fear. But by challenging himself and with encouragement, he gains self-confidence from his achieve-ment. It’s no different for an adult preparing to rappel 309 feet - 21 stories. There is trepidation yet exhilaration at the accomplishment of overcoming barriers that may hold you back from being successful.”

What Are The Benefits of

Bead and Jewelry Guild finds a home in Spencerportby Kristina Gabalski

They admit they are addicted: members of the Upstate New York Glass Bead & Jewelry Guild say they can’t get enough of their craft, which includes beads, jewelry mak-ing and more. The Guild currently meets monthly at the Ogden Senior Center and their regular gatherings provide members with an opportunity to socialize, learn new tech-niques and explore the many facets of their craft.

Guild president Donna Rosenthal says the group cur-rently consists of 50-60 members who come from as far away as Pennsylvania and the Syracuse area, and who have varied interests when it comes to beads and jewelry making. “It ranges from the beads themselves to beaded objects, to jewelry designing,” Rosenthal explains.

Additionally, Guild members are lamp work bead mak-ers, wire workers, micro macrame artists, polymer clay enamelists, and precious metal clay workers, Rosenthal explains. Others have an interest in traditional ethnic stitches and art, or are eagerly awaiting the latest bead shape with which they can work.

The group was founded in the fall of 2002 and originally met in the Buffalo area, Rosenthal says. The Upstate New York Glass Bead & Jewelry Guild was officially organized three years later, in 2005, she explains. The Guild has met at various places in the Rochester area including the Ogden Farmers’ Library, Studio 34 and the Rochester Public Library before finding a home at the Ogden Senior Center.

“Once the (Rochester Public Library) announced they would be closed on Sundays, we looked for a new home,” member Karen Rakoski of Ogden says. “The Ogden Senior Center is proving to be a wonderful venue that allows for year round meetings. People are invited to come as a guest to a meeting to check us out. Those deciding to join can pay a membership fee, which is $25 for the year, and includes benefits like discounts on purchases made at the local bead stores.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” Donna Rosenthal observes. “It’s a nice collaborative group. There is always something to share.” During most monthly meetings, a Guild member will instruct on a given technique. “There’s almost always a member teaching,” Rosenthal says.

Some members have published workbooks in the craft or have been published in beading magazines. Additionally, members will travel “off campus” to learn related crafts like making glass bowls, Rosenthal adds.

Karen Rakoski says so far this year, the Guild has learned how to do chain maille, Viking knit and beaded beads.

The group meets on the last Sunday of the month - unless it is a holiday - and typically skips meeting in November, due to the holidays. For more information contact: [email protected].

Ogden Police to participate in National Click It or Ticket Campaign

Anyone that does not wear a seat belt is risking serious injury or death. That is why the Ogden Police Department will partici-pate in the Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign from May 23 through June 5. The Department will fund this campaign through a Police Traffic Services Grant that was awarded by the NYS Governor’s Highway Traffic Safety Committee.

During the enforcement period, officers will observe a “zero-tolerance” approach for all vehicle occupants who fail to comply with the State seat belt regulations. The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law

requires the use of seat belts by:•All front seat occupants regardless of age.•All rear seat passengers under age 16.•All children under four years old must be secured in a federally approved child safety seat.•Children ages four through their eighth birthday must be properly secured in an appropriate child-restraint system, one that meets the child’s height and weight recommendations according to the child restraint manufacturer.


Memorial Day events come to HiltonHiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion

Post 788 will once again pass out poppies in honor of Memorial Day on May 27 and 28. Legion members will be located in front of Tops Market on South Avenue and at the Hilton Family Diner on Hovey Street in the Village of Hilton.

On Monday, May 30, members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6105 and the Hilton-Parma Honor Guard will remember their comrades with a flag lowering ceremony at Parma-Union Cemetery, 260 Parma Center Road, Hilton, at 7 a.m. Immediately following, they will conduct a second ceremony at the flag me-morial in front of the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Parma Corners-Hilton Road.

Later that morning, the annual Memo-rial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. in the Village of Hilton, proceed down East Avenue from the High School onto Main Street, and end at the Hilton Community Center Gazebo on the corner of West Av-enue and Henry Street.

After a short flag-lowering ceremony and wreath placement in front of the Veterans’ Memorial, the Hilton-Parma Honor Guard will render a gun salute followed by the playing of Taps. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, local civic groups will pass out hot dogs and drinks to all in attendance.

First-graders at Chestnut Ridgeget ready to grow a great garden

The class of first-graders at Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge School divided them-selves into groups of “trees” and “bees.”

The happy student bees ran quickly from tree to tree, collecting and transferring pollen. However, when Instructional Coach Andrea Lynch explained that many bees throughout the country are now too sick to fly quickly, the young “sick” bees slowed the pace of their pollination to a crawl. Students quickly understood the important role healthy bees play in growing apples and peaches.

The exercise was just one part of a morning of learning about how things grow. Aided by volunteer sixth-grade gardeners from the Middle School and visiting com-munity experts, the CRS students prepared themselves for a big role in the future of the school’s Garden of the Saints.

They are setting up a vermicomposting system that will deliver much-needed nu-trients to the garden that was created by classes at the district’s Middle and High Schools last year. The composting project received its funding from an Earth Day Grant from the Genesee Finger Lakes Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association.

Master Gardener Linda Groves ex-plained to the students how red worms create castings that enrich the soil. Local farmer Kim Zuber spoke about the impor-tance of healthy soil in growing abundant feed for people and for animals like cows and sheep.

The Middle School gardeners shared their knowledge with hands-on demonstra-tions of preparing and planting vertical gardens, using alternative growing medi-ums and creating easy watering systems.

One CRS student questioned how they would get their completed compost from Chestnut Ridge to the garden on Fairbanks Road. “Great question,” said Lynch. “Part of your challenge is to be creative and to think of ways we can do that.”

The participating sixth-graders from the Middle School included: Sydney Bailey, Audrey Booth, Charlie Bromage, Megan Bromage, Ryann Calus, Elaina DeSantis, Allie Draper, Cole Faker, Drew Hambley, Blossom Ibezim, Noah Jenkins, Charley Kuhlkin, Dylan McFadden, Mason Moody, Jett Neglia, Caleb Pape, Zach Piper and Jesse Ward.

The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylva-nia” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Churchville-Chili releases budget, bus proposition and board election results

Proposition 1, the Churchville-Chili Central School District’s 2016-17 Budget of $82,563,092 was approved by the com-munity, with a total of 598 “yes” votes to 242 “no” votes.

Proposition 2, which authorizes the dis-trict to purchase eight 66-passenger school buses, two thirty-passenger buses, and one wheelchair bus at an estimated maximum cost of $1,330,000, was passed with 604 “yes” votes to 232 “no” votes.

Candidates Steve Hogan, Kathy Dillon and Gary Lawniczak have been re-elected to the Board of Education, effective July 1, 2016 for three-year terms. They received

639, 605 and 593 votes, respectively. With a total of 526 votes, Leon Tucker was elected to complete the two-year and 44 day term vacated last fall due to a resignation. Marty Belfield received 323 votes.

Spencerport honors community excellenceOn Tuesday, May 17 the Spencerport

community had the opportunity to show support for the school district by casting their vote for the 2016-17 school budget. As you may know, voters approved the school budget with a 77.2 percent margin of approval. Supporting the education of our children provides a strong sense of excellence in our community. The result of the budget vote is another example of how Spencerport supports quality educa-tion; it’s a community commitment.

I would also like to thank Spencerport voters for the support I received for my candidacy for the Board of Education. A strong school district is the founda-tion of a great community. Spencerport is a great community which supports its school system. As a board member, I will work diligently to see that this tradition continues and look forward to represent-ing our community.

The Moving Wall, a smaller version of The Vietnam Vet-erans Memorial in Washington, D.C., returns to Spen-cerport June 16-20 at The Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330, 691 Trimmer Road.The Moving Wall first visited Spencerport in July of 2000. Memorial Day Parademarches through Chili

The annual Chili Memorial Day Parade hosted by Chili American Legion Post 1830 will be held on Monday, May 30. The parade will start at 8:30 a.m. from Grenell Drive and continue west on Chili Avenue to the Veterans Monument in front of the Chili Senior Center.

There will be a ceremony at the memorial honoring departed veterans. Many local groups will partici-pate in the parade to show their support for this day of recognition. The rifle squad from Chili American Legion Post 1830 will present a gun salute at the Veterans Monument and will visit several town cemeteries to pay tribute to all departed veterans.

The event will also include a reading of Chili American Legion Post 1830 departed comrades at the Post at 11 p.m. Chili Post 1830 will host a com-munity picnic in the Post Pavilion from 1 to 5 p.m.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend all of these events. Bring the family and take a short time out of the weekend to come and support America’s fallen heroes.
