Athousand years ago (actually somewherein the mid-1960s), there was a TV pro-gram called “That Was The Week That
Was” (or TWTWTW, or simply TW3), hosted byDavid Frost and based somewhat on the prem-ise that the week’s news could be entertaining(satirized, that is) as well as informative and/oreducational.
I don’t recall how long it ran – or any partic-ular episodes or issues covered, but I do recallthat it was indeed entertaining. Frost, for onething, had a great British sense of humor that
translated well withAmerican audiences andgave things an edge that youwouldn’t normally get with, say, Huntley & Brinkley orWalter Cronkite, the tenuredprofessors and dean, respec-tively, of American TV jour-nalism in those days.
Walter Cronkite, ofcourse, has gone the way ofLawrence Welk. David Frost, since interviewing RichardNixon, has gone the way ofGeraldo Rivera, which is tosay, in the parlance of youth-gone-by, to nowheresville. Now even Tom Brokaw hasretired, so, to drop the nameof another early TV classic,
“Who Do You Trust?”Nevertheless, there’s an innate need to sum
up not just a week, but any given year, no mat-ter how bland, how tumultuous, how horrific, how memorable or would-that-we-could-make-it forgettable, no matter how glorious or inglo-rious it may have been.
2012 was all those things – and less! As anyother year in recent or distant memory, it hadelements of good, bad, and indifference.Depending on where you lived, the weather wasrelatively uneventful or devastating; dependingon who you were (or, again, where you lived),things were quiet, uneventful, and peaceful or,again, devastating. There were shootings, wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, hurri-canes, tornadoes and typhoons, tsunamis anddroughts – something for everyone, if everyonewanted something to remember, and to com-plain about.
Because of the world-wide (even galaxy-wide) coverage now available via satellites, dishes, fiber optics, ESP, and “reality TV,”almost nothing can’t be known within secondsof its occurrence – whether real, imagined, orfabricated on the Internet for the sake of fraud, infotainment, or personal or political expedien-cy.
In the record books, then, in the overall his-torical scheme of things, where is 2012 likely tofall? If you or a loved one died in 2012, it wasimmaterial that the Mayan calendar failed todeliver its supposed wallop: for you, it WAS theend of days. If you were at war, or caught in themidst of war – be it officially declared or theunofficial-but-just-as-deadly war waged onAmerica’s streets or in Libyan neighborhoodsor Congolese jungles, then it was probablya(nother) year of fear and dread and heartache. For many, it was literally a year of living dan-gerously; for others a mere walk in the park.
If you took part in America’s recent elec-tions, it was a year of divisiveness, contention, inglorious victory or humbling defeat – withvery little bridge-building and as much wastedenergy and resources expended as in govern-mental spending in general.
If you spent your year battling illness or painor sadness or depression, you may not evenhave noted the passing from one year to thenext, but if you were involved in assisting peo-ple in dealing with such things, if you werebusy attempting to ease someone’s pain orheartache or dysfunction (even your own), thenyou may consider 2012 a year of great blessings. It’s in the trying, in the inviting, in the attempt-ing to improve the world that comfort and satis-faction are found. It’s in giving that true con-tentment is often gotten.
But just how different was 2012 from, say,1912? Consider the French maxim “plus cachange, plus ca meme chose” (literally “themore things change, the more donuts I chooseto eat!”). I inherited this Christmas a personaljournal for the year 1913 – not a family heir-loom, but the record of someone unknown wholived through that earlier year commenting on,celebrating, and agonizing over many of thesame things we’re dealing with today. (OK, sothe entry about Elsie’s barn being struck bylightning, resulting in the death of severalcows, is not likely to appear in my own journalfor 2013, but the major concerns, the innateyearnings for health, happiness, peace, andlove are all there.)
In fact everything’s right there in Maude’shandwriting (or is it Nina’s?). Though they didmore walking, horse-and-buggy riding, andtrain traveling then than we do today, trans-portation was still an issue. Though the costs ofthings were ridiculously smaller, so were per-sonal and family income. Though there was noTV, movies were in their infancy, andProhibition hadn’t yet come and gone, therewere issues involving family, wholesome pas-times, law enforcement, personal responsibili-ty, and national security.
“The more things change … (I still wantthose donuts!).” Do yourself and future genera-tions a favor. Quit Tweeting and break out a penand journal. Forget the world news when eval-uating 2012. Record your own world, the dailystruggles, the personal joys, the challenges, frustrations, and blessings you found in dailyliving.
And note a couple of things. Did you (at leasttry to) make a difference in somebody’s life?Did someone make a difference in yours? Put acheck on the plus side of the ledger.

Vintage posters discoveredinside wall sell for $500K
Collectors often prefer smaller items. They can display hundreds of coins orbaseball cards in a small area.
Posters are an exception. Bigger is usuallybetter. Collectors typically like a larger piecethat will fill up a wall. These larger pieces aregreat for decorating restaurants and otherbusinesses or a home.
Along with the size, there are other factorsthat determine the value of a poster. The ageis important. Most of these posters weremeant to be thrown away after the event theywere promoting. The older the poster, the lesschance it has survived. Even the survivorstypically are ripped and frayed. The olderposters can be some of the rarest and havewonderful graphics. Collectors are often will-ing to pay for a conservator as they would hiresomeone to restore a great painting.
Old posters were printed for a wide varietyof purposes. They promoted many differenttypes of products. Townspeople knew whenthe circus was coming to town. They wereused to announce upcoming sporting events.Travelers were enticed by posters picturingexotic destinations.
I won’t keep you in suspense any longerabout the posters in this article’s title. Theseposters that sold for half a million dollarswere movie posters from the 1930’s. They werestuffed inside the walls of a home and used asinsulation. This kept them well preserved (asthey were) in a dry environment away fromsunlight. A Dracula poster brought the mostselling for $143,400.
Several years ago we sold a travel poster. Itwas circa 1940’s and pictured a plane flyingover Aspen, Colo., while people were skiingdown a mountain below. It was in great condi-tion and brought nearly $1,000.
I had a circa cardboard poster of MickeyMantle in a rare public service poster warn-ing pedestrians to be careful when crossingthe street. Being a Red Sox fan, I couldn’t hangthat on my wall and it sold in the $700 range.
A woman stopped by my auction hall theday of one of my auctions with a group of
posters. Shehad been toldthey were worth about $200 and asked if I’dsell them for her in the auction that night. Many had some damage but they were old andthe subject matter was interesting. I suggest-ed that she not sell them that night and let mepromote them for her and sell them in thenext auction. Several were from Harper’sWeekly during the late 1800’s. They pictured anumber of subjects — naval flags, theMexican War, tobacco, horses, cats, theHarvard versus Yale football game and golf. They drew a lot of interest with many localbidders, a bidder traveling over 3 hours to ourauction hall and people bidding by phone. Theconsignor was very pleased when I called herafter the sale and told her that they broughtover $17,000!

I’ve never been one to make New Year’sresolutions.
I always say I’m going to eat a little bet-ter (which I never do), and work out a littlemore (which I never do) — it just never
seems to … well, work out!So, I go into 2013 not nec-
essarily making a “NewYear’s resolution,” per se,but making cautiouslyoptimistic predictions asto my behavior during thenext 365 days. Fairenough?
Thinking about these“resolutions” statedabove, I have to admitmine are pretty boring, and fall into the categoryof “most popular resolu-tions ever made,” but Ican’t help it — it’s popular
for a reason.According to www.statisticbrain.com, in
a report published by the University ofScranton Journal of Clinical Psychologyon Dec. 13, losing weight and exercisingmore are in the top five most popular NewYear’s resolutions (numbers 1 and 5,respectively).
As the year changes, it brings about asense of renewal, a new beginning, a start-ing line to aim for. Perhaps that’s the rea-son people pick it as the “green flag” tostart their new ventures. It makes sense —after the gluttonous holiday season, factor-ing in a few days for leftovers and recoveryfrom multiple food comas (I feel like as if Ijust woke up from one), Jan. 1 makes a fora good “reset” button on life.
For me, on top of the usual exercise anddiet goals, I am hereby aiming to be moreorganized this year (number 2 on the top10 list, by the way). One thing I’ve learnedabout myself since I’ve moved out on myown and gotten married is that I have atendency to let things pile up and clutter.Sometimes, I get so busy (some of it myown fault, really), that I feel like I run outof time to do certain things, and let thingsget out of hand before I have no choice butto organize in massive chunks at a time.Don’t even get me started on those dish-es…
Most of problem it seems, is decidingwhich things to just throw away. One ofthese days, when I have at least 50 hours ofcontinuous free time, I’ll tackle that closet, too.
After checking out the aforementionedUniversity of Scranton report, I’m notencouraged that I’ll be successful!According to their study, only 8 percent oftheir study group actually achieved theirresolution in 2012. It doesn’t say how bigtheir sample group was, but it’s startlingto see such a low percentage actuallyattain their goals.
Nevertheless, this ain’t Scranton, and Iain’t no statistic (forgive the double nega-tive)! When it comes to my goals, I am theone who ultimately decides whether I suc-ceed or fail. So there!
So wish me luck as I embark on my goalsin 2013, and if any of you are resolving toimprove your lives in some way in theNew Year, I also wish you luck, andencourage you to stick with whatever youchoose to change.
Hopefully, one year from now, I’ll lookback and know that I am in the minoritythat achieved my goals. If I’m luckyenough to still be your editor one yearfrom know, I’ll make sure to give you theupdate!
The starting line approaches!

These days, you can goonline and invest, for modestfees.
You can also visit variouswebsites for research andwatch numerous cable showsfor investment recommenda-tions. So, why shouldn’t you bea “do-it-yourself ” investorrather than work with a finan-cial professional?
Actually, there are at least five good reasonswhy a financial advisor can help make you abetter investor.
A financial advisor can:Ask the right questions — If you try to invest
on your own, you may find yourself asking thewrong questions, such as: “What’s the ‘hottest’investment out there?” A financial profession-al can help frame better questions, such as:“Given my individual risk tolerance and long-term goals, which investments should I consid-er to help me build a balanced portfolio?” Inother words, a financial professional can helpyou ask the questions that can lead to betterresults.
Look at your situation objectively — No mat-ter how hard you try, you won’t be able to takeall the emotion out of your investment choices. After all, your investment success will play alarge role in some key areas of your life, suchas your ability to enjoy a comfortable retire-ment. Consequently, if you think you’re notmaking the progress you should with yourinvestments, you may be tempted to make ahasty decision to give your portfolio a “jolt.”Frequently, though, such choices can backfire. When it comes to investing, it’s better to investwith your head, not your heart. A financialadvisor can analyze your situation, assess yourrisk tolerance and make appropriate recom-mendations.
Show a deeper understanding of investmentresearch — You can look up many types offinancial data on your own. But do you knowhow to put all these pieces together into a cohe-
sive picture? A financial pro-fessional, with years of expe-rience and training, is gener-ally more capable of findingthe research sources andmaking the most sense out ofthe results.
Put experience to work inmaking portfolio recommen-dations. Even if you’ve beeninvesting for many years, you
might be surprised at all the underlying influ-ences that should go into making investmentdecisions. But a financial professional under-stands market patterns, the nature of diversifi-cation and other factors necessary in helpingyou make the right choices for your situation.
Spend time looking for opportunities —Even if you enjoy the process of investing, thechances are quite good that you can’t spend asmuch time on it as a financial professional. That means, among other things, you aren’tconstantly on the lookout for new investmentopportunities. Nor are you always lookingwithin your own portfolio for opportunities torebalance or make other adjustments that canhelp you move forward toward your goals. Butwhen you work closely with a financial advi-sor, he or she is exploring the financial mar-kets for new investment prospects while regu-larly reviewing your portfolio for possibilitiesof upgrading quality, increasing diversifica-tion or making adjustments in response tochanges in your life.
The “do-it-yourself” route may be fine forhome repairs. But when it comes to managingyour investment situation, there are benefitsto working with a professional.

WARREN — The Quaboag varsityboys’ basketball team will take a vic-tory over Tantasqua whenever theycan, but their 62-40 win on Dec. 21must have felt extra special. TheCougars lost their battle with theWarriors last season 60-54, andTantasqua star guard Corey Gattahad a strong game againstQuaboag’s Thomas Jankins.
Jankins returned the favor in thiscontest, scoring a game-high 35points and playing tremendousdefense.
“I’ve been coaching a long timeand wins against Tantasqua are fewand far between,” Quaboag headcoach Chris Reilly said. “It’s a localrival, the guys know each other, theyplay against each other all growingup in the Suburban Leagues andwhatnot, so it’s always big, but moreimportantly right now it’s in the vic-tory column. We need to get everyvictory we can toward that recordtoward the end of the season.”
The Cougars are now 2-1.Jankins’ quarter scoring break-
downs were 8, 5, 12 and 10 points,helping Quaboag to victory.
“He is an absolute delight tocoach,” Reilly said. “He’s beencoached very well by his family, heworks at his game no matter whatsport it is and he has this innerdrive to not want to lose. He has aninner drive to step up against goodplayers like Corey Gatta.”
Ethan Lacaire (16 points) andJake Wisniewski (7 points) alsohelped the Cougars in the win.
Gatta led Tantasqua with 14points, but only four of those camein the second half. Trevor Robertcontributed seven points for theWarriors.
Tantasqua, now 1-3, has onlyplayed one game with their entirestarting five, which was their victo-ry over Southbridge High. All othergames have been without Gatta orJon Beaudry, an exceptional athletewith both offensive and defensivecapabilities.
Beaudry, battling an intense ill-ness, didn’t play and wasn’t even inthe building.
“It’s tough to get into a rhythmwithout your starting five, yes, butit’s also tough to get into a rhythmwhen you’re starting a senior thathas never played organized basket-ball, when you’re starting a fresh-man, when the first two guys offyour bench are sophomores, so it’stough enough to get into a rhythmwith that clientele,” Tantasqua headcoach Jeff Child said.
Child also gave credit where cred-it was due, and that was withJankins.
“Jankins is a very good player andwe had no answer for him,” Childsaid. “All that team had to do was
shut down Myles [Gaudet, 5 points]and Corey [Gatta] and they did.”
Child hopes that Beaudry’s returnand the other players gaining expe-rience will help the team out in thelong run.
“We will not win until we startrunning plays. Unless we start run-ning some sets we’re going to have along year,” he said.
What could also help the Warriorsis that they don’t play again for a fulltwo weeks when they host AuburnHigh on Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
“Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s bad,but we don’t play for two weeks,”Child said.

AUTOMOTIVETaking The Scare Out Of Bad-Weather Driving
(NAPS)
When the weather outside isfrightful, a little ad?vance prepara-tion will take the scare out.
WHAT TO DO
A few preventive vehicle mainte-nance steps can help keep you frombeing stranded in severe weather:
• Check the battery and chargingsystem for optimum performance.Cold weather is hard on batteries.
• Clean, flush and put newantifreeze in the cooling system. Asa general rule of thumb, this shouldbe done every two years.
• Make sure heaters, defrostersand wipers work properly. Considerwinter wiper blades and use cold-weather washer fluid. Typically, wiper blades should be replacedevery six months.
• If you’re due for a tune-up, haveit done soon. Cold weather magni-fies existing problems such as pings,
hard starts, sluggish performanceand rough idling.
• Check the tire tread depth andtire pressure. If you’ll be driving insnow and ice, consider special tiresdesigned to grip slick roads. Duringcold weather, check tire pressureweekly.
• Check the brakes. The brakingsystem is the vehicle’s most impor-tant safety component.
• Inspect the exhaust system forcarbon monoxide leaks, which canbe especially dangerous if you’ll bedriving with the windows closed.
• Check to see that exterior andinterior lights work and headlightsare properly aimed.
• Be diligent about changing theoil at recommended intervals asdirty oil can spell trouble. Considerchanging to “winter weight” oil.Check the fuel, air and transmissionfilters at the same time.
• Keep the gas tank at least halffull at all times to decrease the
chances of moisture forming in thegas lines and possibly freezing.
• Check the tire pressure of thespare in the trunk.
•Stock an emergency kit with anice scraper and snow brush, jumpercables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles, matches, bot-tled water, dry food snacks and need-ed medication.
That’s the advice from the expertsat the Car Care Council, the sourceof information for the “Be Car CareAware” consumer education cam-paign promoting the benefits of reg-ular vehicle care, maintenance andrepair to consumers.
FREE GUIDE
For a free copy of the council’s“Car Care Guide” or for more infor-mation, visit www.carcare.org.
An investment of an hour or so to have your vehicle checked will pay off and help makesure your driving experience is less frightful and more delightful.
Better Phone Service Can Make For A Safer Trip(NAPS)
Americans spend a lot of time in their carsand even more over the holidays: One car insur-ance company survey found that almost half ofAmerican drivers say they plan on traveling twoor more hours during the holiday season.
With all that time on the road, it’s importantfor drivers and passengers to stay connected.Because most long-distance holiday travel—about 91 percent, according to the Bureau ofTransportation Statistics—is by personal vehi-cle, cell phones and smartphones are a travelnecessity.
A CALL FOR BETTER PHONE SERVICE
In fact, if you’re like 71 percent of cell phoneowners, you consider the device an essentialconnection tool. Yet, if you’re like 65 percent ofphone owners, you also have difficulties withyour service, such as dropped calls, poor signalreception or dead zones. Considering that the
average long-distance trip over the Decemberholidays is 275 miles, that can be a problem.
AN ANSWER
To reduce dropped or missed calls and datainterruption during travel, a leading provider ofconsumer and commercial cell phone signalboosters created an in-vehicle cell phone signalbooster.
It works with most phone carriers, is easy toinstall and includes a bidirectional amplifier in asturdy, lightweight cradle for hands-free opera-tion, a cigarette lighter adapter and an externalmagnetic-mount antenna.
Whether you’re using GPS to get to your desti-nation, distracting your kids during the trip, catching up on e-mail or staying up to date onnews and social media, this zBoost zForce by Wi-Ex can help your wireless gadgets perform likethe travel lifelines you expect them to be.
GIFT IDEA
This holiday season, you may want to get onefor yourself and give others as gifts so family, friends and co-workers can stay connected dur-ing their holiday travels and all year long as well.
LEARN MORE
Visit the www.Wi-Ex.com store and enterpromo code NAPS240 for a special price of $75 forzForce with gooseneck between now andDecember 31st.
To be in the know while on the go, you canget (or give) a device that boosts cell phonesignals on the road.
