This will be my very last issue here at the Student Eye and here in LCC, I would have to say that I’ve done well here, lost some friends, but made a whole lot more. I hope that these friendships will stay with me for a long time. And most of all I would like to thank Media Steve, Business Steve and English Steve for being good tutors. Thanks to all who helped me grow in the last two years to help me be the person I am today. I have loved my time here and am very sad to leave. I hope that all you new students have the same or better experience here at LCC that I did.

Rice Lane City Farm - The project successfully managed take 13 construction students from Vauxhall Rd to Rice Lane City Farm over 2 days. The students restored the front gates by wire brushing, priming and then painting them, they built an insecthabitat and also painted a garden shed. All activities were identified by the farm management and were activities that would help improve the farm.

Children in Need - A variety of events and activities were held in aid of Children in Need 2010 across the 5 main college centres. Activities included a table tennis tournament at Vauxhall Rd, a pool challenge tournament at Clarence St, a games stall at Duke St and cake stalls at the Arts Centre, Bankfield Rd and Clarence St. College Start also had a sponsored walk around Sefton Park. These helped to raise over £250 for Children in Need. Toy appeal - This annual event gives students the opportunity to help children and young people across Merseyside to have a better festive season. Students helped to sort toy donations into age categories so they can be donated to underprivileged children and young people.

Kicking the year off with Regenerate, a student environmental/community project - students from across the city from local colleges and universities got involved in a 2 day project helping to regenerate a rundown area in Liverpool. Students removed graffiti and litter in a park, made tree guards and bird boxes and

helped to create a community garden.

Comic Relief - A variety of events and activities were held in aid of Comic Relief 2011 across the 5 main college centres.Activities included red noses being sold at all centres, a 5-a-side football match held at Kensington Sports Centre, catering students atDuke St getting sponsored to have their legs waxed by beauty students in the centre foyer, a student getting sponsored to have his long hair cut off by a barbering student (also being sponsored) and pool tournaments taking place in Clarence St and Duke St student rooms. College Start students also organised their own fundraising activities including a penalty shootout, bingo, a raffle, guess-how-many-sweets-in-the-jar and selling bookmarks. All activities raised a total of over £800.

Vauxhall Rd railings project - Student volunteers from across the college joined forces to prepare and paint a section of railings for a local community centre. The railings were in a state of disrepair so students from the college’s Vauxhall Rd site used their skills acquired in lessons to prepare and wire brush the railings. Then studentsfrom across the college came together to paint the stretch of railings, it took a lot of time and effort but the end result is fantastic.

Talent show event management - Volunteers planned, managed and ran this years college charity talent show in aid of MNDA. The show raised over £400 for MNDA and volunteers got involved with auditioning acts, working backstage and running the

raffle.

E N R I C H M E N T WHAT WILL YOU CHOOSE? The Enrichment Team is here to help you get more out of college. You’ve come to college to get some good qualifications but we are here to help make your experience of college life as interesting, fun, exciting, rewarding and as useful as possible. When your class ends is when the experience begins! What will you choose? There are four ways for you to get more from college! Enrichment is… 1. ACTIVE / PLAY / EXPERIENCE 2. VOLUNTEER 3. REPRESENT 4. MEDIA

1. ‘ACTIVE’ / ‘PLAY’ / ‘EXPERIENCE’ ACTIVE - sports / relaxation / adventure Whether it be sport, relaxation or adventure you’re after, our range of physical activities is bound to satisfy your need to get ‘Active’! Our brand new centre, The Learning Exchange, has fantastic leisure facilities including a sports hall and an aerobics studio as well as a gym and fitness suite. You can make the most of these through us after your classes, in our evening sessions. But it doesn’t stop there… you can also get a taste of adventure. Come on one of our adventure weekends or try out rock climbing, mountain biking or water sports with us too!

PLAY - social areas / trips / events Make the most of the amazing social spaces at The Learning Exchange with our ‘Play’ programme. You can play games consoles, table tennis, and pool or air hockey. Or maybe just have a sit down, relax and an old fashioned chat between classes. Don’t forget to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi around the centre too. And if that isn’t enough, get yourself involved in any number of art and craft activities or even reward yourself to free pamper treatments in our social spaces. Oh, and look out for big events like our Freshers’ Fair and Talent Show through the year too! Enrichment ‘Play’ doesn’t stop at the doors of the building though. We have a programme of trips running all through the year. Whether it’s taking in a show, Christmas shopping, indoor skiing and snowboarding, the thrills & spills of a theme park or fancying yourself as a bit of a culture vulture exploring a new city. we›ve got it sorted!

Page 7: Student Eye Summer 2011

7

EXPERIENCE - workshops / taster sessions / first aid courses Throughout the year you will be able to try your hand and get some instruction at all sorts of different activities through our ‘Experience’ programme. You can get first aid trained, learn how to record and edit music and find out how to make your digital photos stand out. Or even try your hand at different cookery styles maybe even learn about bike and guitar maintenance. If you get involved in our workshops, taster sessions or first aid courses you are sure to widen your horizons and learn some new skills.

2. ‘VOLUNTEERING’ micro volunteering / one-off events / ongoing projects We can help you get involved in some really worthwhile volunteering during your time at college. You can make a real difference as well as getting some great experience to make your CV or UCAS application sparkle that little bit more! No matter how much (or little!) spare time you have to offer we will have something for you. Our ‘micro volunteering’ opportunities may only take five or ten minutes of your time. Or you could choose to be involved in one of our one-off events or ongoing projects. Once you’ve decided how much time you want to give there’s lots for you choose from. It could be charity and fundraising events you’re into. Maybe conservation and eco projects interest you. It could be helping local communities or maybe you have a big idea of your own that we can support with guidance and training! And don’t forget that we will acknowledge every little bit of energy, time and initiative you give to our ‘Volunteering’ opportunities through our accreditation programme!

3. ‘REPRESENT’ student reps / student union committee / campaignsWe really care about your experience and your opinions of college life. It’s a student rep’s job to make students’ voices heard. So, every class has one and you have the chance to put yourself forward to be it! We will train you up and give you the opportunities, through regular meetings and focus groups, to put ideas and opinions of your class to college managers. You can make your voice heard and we will listen!

Page 8: Student Eye Summer 2011

8

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a leader, have a passion for or an interest in a certain Union Committee or even maybe become our Student Governor! You could become a part of the big decision making and shaping processes at college! You even get your own desk spaces to work from in the Enrichment Media Office! But even if you are not a student rep or on the Student Union Committee you can still get involved in shaping attitudes and decisions around college. The Student Union will run campaigns around issues and matters that you say are important to you. So tell them what they are! And then be involved in getting your messages out there.

4. MEDIAmagazine / radio station / interactive e-zine If you have an interest in journalism, design, production, photography, presenting or writing of any sort then we have the media opportunities for you! Why not contribute to the student magazine? You could see your words, photos or designs in print & published right across college! Our brand new, purpose built radio studio in The Learning Exchange is waiting for you to get broadcasting too. We will provide training and support in all aspects of making a radio show, both in front of and behind the microphone. And another exciting opportunity on offer is to get involved in the development of an interactive e-zine, getting your student news online in pictures, video, sound & words as it happens. You could be there from the very start!

Look out for our new student room at Vauxhall Road.

Recently I was asked to write an article about the college radio project, having previously been a part of the project when it was run in 2009/10. I enjoyed it so much. Writing an article, though, is totally not my thing.I met up with Kirsty Walker who runs the radio project to ask her some questions about the upcoming projects and new college centre in town:

M: So Kirsty, would you mind telling us about previous radio projects you’ve been a part of?K: We ran one at John Moores Student Union where students were able to do an hour show each. We ran the same thing at Icon Radio in the University of Liverpool.M: I came to one session in Duke Street, but nothing really materialised from it, what happened?K: We decided instead of using the old equipment that was very dated, we needed to get new equipment. Plus the fees involved for licences to play music would have been too expensive.M: What is going to be happening ‘radio wise’ in the new centre?K: The radio station will broadcast at the Learning Exchange, it will be run by students, and eventually it will be available online.M: What can students get involved with on the radio front?K: They can be a part of the management group, on air, technical operation, marketing and playlists. It will totally be run by students and will be fantastic to put down on a CV.M: What will be the opening times/days?K: Hopefully it will be open the entire opening times of college.M: What genres of music can we play?K: Anything, of course restrictions with bad/threatening language, but absolutely anything, rap, metal, folk, pop, rock.

If you’re interested in the radio project you can email [email protected] or pop in and see the Enrichment Team at the Learning Exchange in Room 1/41.

About 100,000 people in the UK die each year due to smoking.

About 17,000 children under five years old in England and Wales are admitted to hospital each year due to illnesses caused by their parents' smoking.

The number of persons living with HIV in the UK reached an estimated 86,500. A quarter of these persons were unaware of their infection. In the UK during 2009, a total of 6,630 persons were newly diagnosed as HIV-infected.

If you say that you're dying to get a good night's sleep, you could mean that literally. You can go without eating for weeks without succumbing, but eleven days is tops for going without sleep. After eleven days, you'll be asleep -- forever!

The air from a human sneeze can travel at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more.

Did you know.....

Page 13: Student Eye Summer 2011

13

Stopping smoking will be a great benefit for your health. For example, the sooner you stop smoking the more serious health risks you can avoid (e.g. cancer, high blood pressure, stroke).

If you are going to smoke, then take seven steps. This means taking seven steps away from non-smokers so that they are not passive smokers.

Get checked regularly to make sure you don’t have an STI and, if you have got one, that it is treated quickly.

Go to bed early! It is important that you get your 8 hours sleep to help your brain function. Any less than the recommended amount of sleep will disrupt your sleep pattern.

When sneezing, cover your nose and mouth, or duck when you hear one coming your way!!

How to prevent this.....
