Every Easter Sunday we hear from three saints who bear witness to Christ’s resurrection: Peter, Paul and John. Peter testifies to

Jesus’ life and mission, Paul to the effect that his rising has on us, and John gives an account of what happened on hat first Easter morn. Listening to today’s scripture passages, let us reflect on

how we can witness to Jesus’ rising from the dead. Next week’s readings:

COVID-19: Curse or Blessing?

This year COVID-19 prevents us from gathering Sunday and all holy days for church services or around the table for Easter brunch or dinner. And if the Easter Bunny hopped into our backyard to join the family Easter egg hunt, she’d have to wear a mask. Easter 2020 will be like no other, but let’s count our blessings. Thanks to the internet, here are ways to make the most of our first ------ and, we hope, last ---- Easter in self-isolation.

The restrictions on assembling prevent us from celebrating Easter in the church. But we still proclaim with our lives our joy in the renewal of the world, our Easter joy. Many are suffering from the corona virus, and we keep them all in our prayers. No one is suffering from the loss of our Easter joy. No pandemic can destroy Easter.

The celebration of Easter stands in stark contrast to our commemoration of Good Friday. Think about the Good Fridays you have experi-enced. On Good Friday, there are no flowers or alleluias. There is solemn music. And there was the Cross.

In the mystery of the Redemptive Suffering of the Lord, we participate in the cross of Christ. St. Paul put it this way in his Letter to the Colossians: “in my body I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of His Body, which is the Church.” We all are. We all are making up for what is lacking. But how can there be a deficiency in Christ’s sacrifice? The answer is this: we are entrusted with the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. The only way we can do this is by living the Life of Christ. That is why we are called Christians. We make Christ real in the world. Our living His Life includes our embracing His Sacrifice. We unite our pains and sorrows to the Lord as our part in making the presence of the Suffering Savior real in the world.

I wish I could tell you that pain does not exist and that you can make it go away with your mind. The pandemic that is the corona virus has certainly reminded us of our human condition. Suffering is part of our lives. One of the great beauties of our faith is that there is value in every aspect of the Christian’s life, even those aspects of life that are full of pain. Therefore, we give it all to the Lord. We give Him our joy and our pain. If our health is poor or failing, if our lives are not going as we hoped, whatever pain we have, we give it to Him. We unite everything to the cross so others can experience the Sacrificial Love of Jesus in our lives.

We focus on the cross today, and throughout this Holy Week. We unite our pains to Jesus’ pains. We receive His healing through His Cross. We bring His healing to others by allowing them to experience the Power of the Cross at work in our lives. We are called to participate in Redemptive Suffering.

But remember after Good Friday there is Easter. Suffering is not the end of the story. There is one more chapter. This is the most important chapter because, as the saying goes, they who laugh last laugh best. And in the last chapter of the story of Jesus we see him rise from the dead in all glory and majesty. He is vindicated. His enemies are shamed and confused. Jesus regains his eternal glory with the Father. He is the Lord who will prevail over all humankind, his enemies included. For us his embattled followers this is good news.

It is good news to know that truth is immortal. We can suppress Truth, accuse it of being a lie, condemn it, torture it, kill it, and bury it in the grave but on the third day Truth will rise again. Remember this and do not give up on Truth even when everybody seems to give up on it. Do not give up on Truth; do not give up on Justice. Do not give up on doing what is right. Do not give up serving others. Do not give up loving others.

We must learn to believe in the Sun even when it is not shining, knowing that by and by it will shine again. It is the end of the story that counts. That is why the church asks us today to rejoice and be glad. Even when we are going through very difficult times, but I know, Man has lost control of the Coronavirus; God has not.
