What can you recall?

Lymph nodes of face and body

• Who am I?

Ingredients of lymph

• Water• Protein molecules• White blood cells – leucocytes• Waste• Lymphocytes• Fat molecules• Bacteria and viruses

Connection between blood and lymph

• 1. Blood capillary• 2. Oxygen out• 3. Plasma comes out• 4. Absorbed into cells• 5. Tissue fluid bathes cells• 6. Passes into lymph vessels

Heart

• Size of fist• Cardiac muscle tissue• 4 chambers• Pulse• Heart beat• 4 valves

The structure of the Lymphatics

Structure Function

Lymph Fluid Transports excess fluids, waste and lymphocyte cells around the body

Lymph Capillaries

Drain away excess fluid & waste products from the tissue spaces in the body

Lymph Vessels

Carry the lymph towards the heart. Once lymph has passed through the vessels it drains into the lymph node

Lymph Nodes Acts as a filter of lymph to remove or trap any micro-organisms, cell debris or harmful substances

Right Lymphatic duct

To collect lymph from the whole body and return it to the blood stream- Right side

Thoracic duct To collect lymph from the whole body and return it to the blood stream- Left side

Thymus Promoting the development & maturation of lymphocytes in a newborn baby

Spleen Filtering out worn red blood cellDestroying micro-organisms Protection from diseaseImmune responseReleases small amounts of blood when needed

Cisterna Chyli Carries the lymph from the intestines, and the left and right lumbar trunk

Lymphoid Tissue-Tonsils

Appendix Peyer’s patches

•Help to destroy harmful invaders as we take air in the body•Protecting the lower digestive system from harmful substance•To help prevent infection

Functions of the Lymphatic

1. Filters bacteria, foreign materials, toxins and any harmful materials.

2. Drains away excess fluid to prevent water clogging of the tissues and cells.

3. Transports proteins back into the blood supply.

4. Produces lymphocytes which protect and defend the body against infection.

5. Produces antibodies to fight bacteria. 6. Absorbs fat from the intestine and

transport it to the liver.
