Overview of StructuresThe property at 3510 S. NC Highway 119 in Haw River, North Carolina was purchased bySydney Pennix in 2005 with the hopes of helping provide a sanctuary for people recovering from

cancer treatment. Her vision is to provide gardens and areas to congregate for healthy healing.

This 10 acre property is currently divided into three parcels which are outlined separately. The

main home which is approximately 1,700 sq. feet and one outbuilding that is 2,000 sq.feet are

located on the front parcel. (The main home is not being included in this presentation.) Another

outbuilding and a small lake are on the second parcel. The third parcel is undeveloped and hasno outbuildings. Currently both outbuildings would require renovation in order to be used for

    anything other than storage.

Analysis of StructuresUpon first driving up to the property and seeing the lake, we envisioned a few paddle boats for kids to

use. There are many possibilities of how we can design this property to accomplish Sydneys vision. Shehad mentioned the desire to have large gardens along the left side of the property (along Scott Lane).

However, our first instinct would be to house these gardens along the right side of the property so that it is aquieter area for reflection, away from the side road. This would also allow the outbuilding closest to the

house to be used for gardening utilities and possible gathering space. We were initially surprised at how

close the main house was to the first outbuilding and would use some plantings for some privacy for theowner. Since the second outbuilding is near the water, renovating it into either a meditation space or boat

    house seems appropriate.

Both structures have visual interest and relate to theproperty. Restoration of certain sections, instead of

demolition, will incorporate the unique characteristics of

the buildings. Over the years, additions have beenmade that blend the old and new. The left and right side

of the first outbuilding as well as the overhang on the

second outbuilding are additions. We hope that the

changes to the structures are a statement of theirstructural integrity. This project is about life and we feel

that these structures can have life put back into them aswell. The story of Sydney, her land, and the possibilities

through design will make this sanctuary truly special.
