STROM CENTER NEWS
Edition 318 September, 2016
Medicare D Programs Planned for September and October For persons who are interested in Medicare D (Prescription Drug Plans), and / or persons who have just recently or will soon turn 65, please plan to attend one of our Informational Meetings held on upcoming dates, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. We are gearing up for a VERY busy season educating and enrolling persons in the most cost effective plans. It is critical that persons choose the plan that is right for them. The prescriptions, dosage amount and how often a person takes the medications dictate which plan would be best for each individual. We will begin signing persons up for plans in mid October. However we will do 'pre-signups" as early as the first of October (depending on when we receive confirmation of the available plans. December 7th is the deadline....whichever plan you are in on December 7 th at midnight is the one you will be assigned for the ENTIRE year of 2017. It may sound like a broken record but I can't mention this enough: Plans change, and many dramatically from one year to the next. The plan in which you are enrolled this year (2016) may be the best THIS year but it could prove disastrous for next year (2017). EVERY January a number of persons come to Strom distressed over the changes in their medication costs just to realize that they could have chosen a different plan which would have saved them hundreds (and yes, depending on the medications, even thousands) of dollars if they had reviewed their options and switched plans for the new year. Some plans change their formularies, deductible amounts, and premiums. And....you
may be in a plan in 2016 which will not even be available in 2017; if that happens, Medicare will pick your replacement plan for you! (Yikes!!) Unfortunately, there is NO way to switch plans after December 7 th (unless there is a change in residence). Persons with Low Income Subsidy A.K.A. Extra Help (maybe you qualify??) are under a different set of rules than are those with just Medicare D. We will be hosting informational meetings for ALL PERSONS with Medicare and will also touch upon:
• Medicare D Plan changes in deductibles, premiums, and "donut hole" amounts
• Medicare Supplement (MediGap) plans
• Medicare Advantage Plans
• Preventative Services covered by Medicare
• Various Enrollment & Disenrollment Dates
• What programs are available beyond Medicare
• Turning 65? Steps to take ...
You are invited to attend either of the Medicare D Meetings, which will be held on:
TUESDAY, OCT. 4th 1:30 -3 PM
TUESDAY, OCT. 11t h AT 6:00- 7:30 PM
Of course both sessions are FREE to everyone. Although, registration is NOT required, it is recommended to ensure there are plenty of hand-outs available. Please call 734-5677 and mention which session you are attending.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO GET
READY FOR MEDICARE D.....
FOR PERSONS WHO HAVE ENROLLED IN MEDICARE D BY STROM STAFF in the past, you are aware of our particular enrollment routine. Yellow Medication Forms are available which require Name, Address, Phone #, Birthdate, etc. as well as Medication name(s), dosage amounts, how
often taken, and whether generics are acceptable. Once the form is completed, it can be returned to Strom; the date it is returned is critical...it is a first come first served
system, appointments will be made in the order in
which the form is returned. We will ONLY accept the Yellow Medication Forms...NO pharmacy printouts, typed or handwritten sheets, verbal lists, or nursing home printouts will be accepted..
If we review with you your information and enroll you in a plan and your medications change, we will do the best we can to re-review your information to ensure you are re-enrolled in the best plan possible.
Last year, we fortunately, were able to
accommodate all persons, but with the increasing numbers of requests we can't guarantee that late requests will receive appointments! Also, remember that Thanksgiving holidays mean that there are some days not available for appointments. Even though final enrollment date is December 7 th ,
Strom's cut-off date for enrollment is November 30th. This will allow for staff to ensure all enrollments have been confirmed and any problems resolved.
MEDICARE D TEAM...Giving Thanks BEFORE the RUSH!
As we enter again into the very busy Medicare D Season, I just have to share the confidence, appreciation, and great respect I have for our
`Team' here at Strom. It is impossible to share ALLLLL that goes into making such an important, time-sensitive, labor-intensive program a success. But the success certainly is due in great part to such dedicated staff members....Even though they each one wear mannnny hats during any given day I will share briefly what each's position is during Medicare D Season:
PAM ALLEN: Ship Counselor, Enrollment Specialist...Pam reviews clients' medication lists, and counsels on the most cost effective plans tailored to individual needs and completed enrollments into the chosen plan. She also provides information on government programs which are available to lower income individuals. She also provides these services to persons finding it difficult to come to the Center through Outreach visits.
KATHY FERRENBURG: Ship Counselor, Enrollment Specialist...Kathy will be providing services primarily in Henderson County, reviewing and enrolling clients according to individual needs. She also will inform persons who are lower income on ways to cover medication costs.
JON REYNOLDS: Jon will be in charge of incoming Medication Forms. He does much of the scheduling of appointments, medication 'look-ups', scanning of completed enrollments, and final filing of records for both Warren and Henderson Counties.
BOB ANDERSON: Bob will also be in charge of incoming Medication Forms and scheduling of appointments as well as color coding and filing of completed enrollments...for both Warren and Henderson Counties.
CAROL McCRERY: As the SHIP Coordinator I will oversee the Medicare D program in both Warren and Henderson Counties, counsel clients on and review Medicare D plans according to individual needs and complete enrollments into chosen plans. I, too will provide additional options and /or alternatives to persons who face difficulty in meeting the needs of their medications.
I couldn't be more proud nor could I feel more blessed to be surrounded by each of these super team-members... So BEFORE the heavy demands hit Know You ALL are truly Appreciated!!! Carol
Reminder....Strom Center will be closed on
September 5th in recognition of Labor Day...
We will close at 3 PM on Wednesday,
September 7th to allow everyone to attend
the Warren County Prime Beef Festival
Parade....

CHURCH AND
MUSIC FILL HIS
LIFE
LEO RAMER'S life has been dedicated primarily to sacred music and church. "I see music as a gift from God and I always thought it the most important thing we can share," he said. Born and raised in Roseville, Ramer's parents were not musicians. However, his grandparents worked as a family dance band in their younger days in the early 1900s. "My grandparents - two brothers who married two sisters - had a portable dance floor that my great grandfather built," Ramer said. "They would haul that floor, a big upright piano and other instruments to Green Bush, Walnut Grove, Prairie City, Bushnell and other neighboring cities. As a young kid, I was always hearing about that. I also had an uncle, France Woodmansee, who was a concert pianist." While attending school in Roseville, Ramer was influenced by his music teachers, including Della Mae Doole, who taught music and English. "She was my very first organ teacher," Ramer said. "She was a grade school teacher who saw talent in a kid, and she saw to it that I became an organist in the Methodist Church in Roseville while I was in sixth grade." Ramer played piano for the high school chorus and tuba in the band. "Chorus teacher Kathryn Steele was very influential to me throughout high school," Ramer recalled. "My band teacher, Carroll Henderson was also very influential in making me want to practice and teach music. Both Mrs. Steele and Mr. Henderson were at Roseville for 30 years. To this day I put flowers on their graves, and that of
Dr. George Mulder." During his junior high and high school years, Ramer was able to have private organ lessons with Mulder, a native of Amsterdam, and professor of music at Western Illinois University, who included the young prodigy in classes with college students. "It was a blessed thing," Ramer said. Years later, in the mid 1980s - while Ramer was teaching - Mulder was again living in the Netherlands and notified Ramer that a single donor, age 101, was giving a huge organ made in Amsterdam to the Chicago Holy Name Cathedral. "The doctor - who knew the family that built the organ - returned to Illinois for the dedication concert," Ramer said. "Because the church in Chicago was given this incredible organ built in the Netherlands they flew it and the builder to Chicago. Dr. Mulder came with and he took some of my students and Ito Chicago Holy Name Cathedral to sit in on the dedication of that organ. It was quite remarkable." Ramer also studied organ under Lillian Meherle McCord, who was teaching emeritis at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. "She inspired me to always teach and never quit," he said. While doing post-grad work for the Diocese of Peoria in the early 1980s, Ramer was invited by Bishop O'Rourke to study music at the Vatican. "That was probably the pinnacle of my entire educational career, and being Catholic made it all the more significant to be at the Vatican," Ramer said. "It was a grand time. I studied with people from English and French-speaking countries. That included Africans, people from France and Germany, and my roommate from Ireland. It was really international, and we all spoke music. That was the best part." Ramer plays piano for the Monmouth-Roseville High School Chorus, which is under the direction of music teacher Kevin Ferry. Ramer has directed the Ecumenical Singers since the community chorus was founded in 1979. Comprised of adults, college and high school students, the Ecumenical Singers perform throughout the year, at venues locally and around the world - from Pearl Harbor

to New York City and Washington D.C. Their
Christmas and Easter concerts feature the Immaculate Conception School's Children Choir, directed by Alisa Ramer. She and Leo married 11 years ago. "In addition to teaching music at ICS, Alisa directs Choral Dynamics in Galesburg and has private
students here at home, too," Ramer said. "Our life together is entwined by people in music. We have supported, harbored, and fostered all kinds of young people over the years, so they have become our children. They are one of the most significant parts of our life in the community and we met them all through music." Asked if giving private music lessons to about 90 students of all ages, shapes and sizes at any given
time is ever tiring, Ramer answered, "I feel as though I never go to work. My grandparents were of German descent and they always believed your
work should be your life and your life should be your work. This is my 51st year of teaching and performing church music. My kids just sang at Roseville Methodist Church last weekend, so that was very nostalgic for me."
The above is one of our continuing "Cameo
Shots" series. Thank you to staff member
BOB ANDERSON for this interview and
writing...
