In the highly competitive business environment, budget-oriented planning or forecast-based

planning methods are insufficient for a large corporation to survive and prosper. The firm must

engage in strategic planning that clearly defines objectives and assesses both the internal

and external situation to formulate strategy, implement the strategy, evaluate the progress,

and make adjustments as necessary to stay on track

Goals A goal is a specific target, an end result or something to be desired. It is a major

step in achieving the vision of the organization. In the strategic planning context a goal is a place where the organization wants

to be, in other words a destination. For example, a goal for a sporting organization might be to have 50 qualified and active coaches. An organization may set several goals that will outline a path to achieving the vision. The goal of attaining 50 qualified and active coaches will be an important step in achieving the vision of becoming most dynamic, most respected and best achieved club in the district league.

Objectives A measure of change in order to bring about the achievement of the goal. The

attainment of each goal may require a number of objectives to be reached (see figure below). There is often much confusion between goals and objectives. Whereas as a goal is a description of a destination, an objective is a measure of the progress that is needed to get to the destination. The following table serves to illustrate the difference between goals and objectives.

Opportunities and threats of strategy process Opportunities Our business sector is expanding, with many future opportunities for success. Local government wants to encourage local businesses. Our competitors may be slow to adopt new technologies.Threats Developments in technology may change this market beyond our ability to adapt. A small change in the focus of a large competitor might wipe out any market

position we achieve.
